Sooo, here's the long explanation, lol! This song talks about someone who feels trapped in their relationship and wants to ‘break free’ of their lover. Although it was originally intended to be a male perspective of the women’s liberation movement, it was then taken on as somewhat of an anthem for one’s own personal freedom for person who finds his/herself in a situation where they feel repressed and want to ‘break free’ of their circumstances and show the real person that they are. The idea of dressing up in the video was suggested by Roger Taylor,featuring the band dressed up in drag-with Freddie as a housewife, Roger Taylor as a young school girl, Brain May as a housewife, and John Deacon as a grandmother. Echoing the song’s lyrics, all of them want to ‘break free’ of their lives. Roger Taylor said, “We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we’d have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that”. In an interview with Q magazine March 2011, Bryan May was asked whether each band member’s character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities? He answered:”Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie’s idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger’s girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women.” But in the US, it was a different story, the British humor didn’t go over well with the Americans, and some got offended by the band dressing as women, seeing the video as an empowerment to transvestites. Couple with Mercury’s bisexuality, the video proved too controversial and ended up being banned on MTV. Brian May said, “I think at that point we lost America, which is a shame, as it means there’s a whole chunk of Queen songs which never got played or heard there.”

Queen decided too dress up as females as a reference to a British soap called coronation street, the soap is on Television several times a week, and has been running for over 60 years now, it was a huge hit, but Americans hated the video mainly because they didn’t understand the concept and it was outrageously different for the times , let’s not forget Queen we’re at the forefront of musical videos in them times, great performance great reaction thanks 🙏

All the boys are in drag. It was all in good fun, though. Roger is a prettier girl than most biological females. Brian is the woman with the curlers in her hair and John is the old woman on the couch. I love the song and the video, thank you for your reaction. Retirement allowed me to finally live free. No more being controlled by other's expectations of me. Sad it took until I was 66 years old to actually get there, but I am really glad I did.

Actually - from all videos I’ve seen of them describing this.. it was actually John (the old lady) who suggested they dress up as women for this (he wrote this song). They all thought it was a great idea.. it was a total pun; fun for them. Sadly, it made this song banned in US on MTV at the time - as to ‘risque’ (yes.. it’s true, believe it or not)!! Wow I miss him! We have the recordings, and I never got to see him live, but I’m betting you that being in the same space with him physically is something no one will ever forget. Even as a group experience! I went to see Queen with Adam Lambert a few years ago.... it was great, and I love Adam, but it can only ever end up being a tribute to Fred with anyone else as front man. It was saddening to me. But Adam Lambert has pipes ya’ll.

Great reaction! I love your how long it took for you to realise that it was Roger haha. To be fair to you, back then he had a very beautiful, soft, kind of feminine look even without the wig, makeup and clothes haha. Kind of funny that this video is probably part of the reason why you hadn’t heard many Queen songs before doing the reactions. The video was banned by MTV in America and Freddie was furious and said he’d never tour America again unless they had another hit. Of course without touring and promoting their music people weren’t going to hear it so it was sort of the end of any major success for them in the US.

When they shot this video MTV at the time bandit! Because Queen is English, they had television programs back in the day one very famous one was called the “Benny Hill show“ and he would play female characters just think “Madea“. Anyway they did the video in the style of the English comedies of their time but Americans in the 80s had no clue about English humor, sitcoms ect.
All of the guys were in drag because that was what was funny on the sitcoms in Britain. MTV made a huge stink out of it and band the entire video!

Funny reaction lol And I don't think the song was about women's rights. By this time, John's marriage was in trouble and he was getting tired of the rock star life. Besides, the four of them thought Queen might be reaching their expiration date ( that's why they always said Live Aid was so important for them, a shot in the arm which made them realize the band still had something to offer). John said in an interview that the inspiration for the song had been "frustration".

If you're confident in your sexuality, you can admit that Taylor made a fine looking woman. It does not change your preference, so what does it matter? At the time, I was a bit young to have such thoughts, but even then I wasn't even slightly into guys, so I just saw it as awesome acting. Now, he does look good in that outfit, or did back then. Still not into guys, not even curious.
