    You are correct. 😊 vanilla Ice was sued, by Queen, for using it without permission. The video you watched is an edit of two different performances. Although, Queen, and Bowie wrote the song, they never performed it together. What we see is Queen in 1986, at wembley stadium, and Bowie performing, with Queen, at a tribute concert, for Freddy in 1992. That was a great show. So many great musicians came to sing, with queen, to honor Freddy.

      According to VH1 documentary of Vanilla Ice story, he commented:
      "rather than have to pay royalties to Queen every time “Ice Ice Baby” was played or used for commercials, etc, it was cheaper for him to purchase the publishing rights to “Under Pressure” which he claims cost him $4 million at the time and was a great investment. "
      Digging online on legal matters, I found:
      Vanilla Ice (Robert Van Winkle) owns all the rights to 1981 hit by Queen and David Bowie “Under Pressure”, after buying it from Brian May to avoid a court case.
      This means every time someone reacts or clicks to this song, the Ice man gets paid - not Queen.

    Huge backstory behind this song, and how it evolved when Queen and David Bowie were sharing a recording studio. It became a game between Freddie and David - a back and forth for the lyrics. They never sang it together.. the clips in this compilation of David are from his performance (with Annie Lenox) for Freddie’s tribute concert after he died.. it was in 1992 (you should consider watching it.. it’s amazing)!! It’s a great song; you’re correct.. most of Freddie’s later songs had a deep meaning.. and much optimism. Great reaction!!

      @Velda Filzen I’m sure it was a misstatement, because you said they never sang it together. Yes, they recorded it at Montreaux Studio in Montreaux, Switzerland. They were “creating” some of the lyrics supposedly seperately, but the studio Engineer (Reinheld Mack) saw Bowie peeking and listening to Freddie when it was his turn singing/recording. So, they (Queen) and David Bowie recorded the song at the studio, but never sang it together LIVE. Freddie’s voice was also well rested after touring, plus he wanted to impress Bowie, so he was able to both hit and hold a looong high note, then go even higher!! Beautiful!! 😍

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 2 роки тому +6

      The case was settled out of court, which is why the general public does not know the full details (court cases are public record. private settlements are not). While VI claimed he bought "the song" (later saying he bought Under Pressure), Queen & Bowie camps have long said he did not. VI paid a 1 time, lump sum, for the right to use the bass line for Ice, Ice Baby (meaning VI gets the royalties for it), but he has absolutely no rights or claim to Under Pressure & can not use the bass line in any other song (meaning, Queen & Bowie receive the royalties for "UP").

    • @bigs1546

      @@wnsafford1854 he also had to acknowledge Queen and Bowie on the credits of the song - Ice lost big time because he never had real success after that he should never have STOLEN. You must always ask and pay if you want other people's work. This "sample" wording is very offensive when they are using another person's work............it isn't being given out in a supermarket!!

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 2 роки тому +2

      @@bigs1546 Oh yeah, Queen & Bowie got added to the writing credit for Ice, Ice, Baby (again, VI had to make that 1 time payment, so VI gets IIB royalties). While I’m not a fan of sampling, when it’s ok’d by the song owner in advance, it’s not stealing, but VI flat out stole, then lied (& lied & lied). In 2017, after years of claiming he already owned Under Pressure, on The Dan Patrick show VI claimed he'd recently bought UP from Brian May (who doesn’t even own the full rights). When Brian was asked about it, at 1st he thought the interviewer was dragging up VI’s old claim. When he realized it was a new claim, he shook his head, gave a bemused smile & said “He is mistaken.” I think VI’s career could have recovered, IF he'd just stopped lying, but by adding lie upon lie, he gave himself a reputation in the industry as a thief & liar. Not somebody most would do business with.

    Yes, the bass line was the. creation of Queen bassist, John Deacon. He thought of it early in the songwriting process and forgot it when they came back from a break, Fortunately drummer Roger Taylor was able to recall it.

    This was the best collaboration song with Queen & David Bowie. The vocals on here between Freddie and Bowie were awesome and it was almost a duel of the high notes with them. But the message in this song is usually overshadowed by the catchy beat and the instruments. Great reaction video!

    2 days ago, my wife was exiting Publix and encountered an older woman in her early 50's that had her small dog with her. She was looking through her purse and, from her expression, my wife could see the woman was upset and quietly crying. My wife asked the lady what was wrong, and she replied that she didn't have enough money to get her dog food and a couple essential items. My wife proceeded to hand her $40. The woman tried to refuse and, after realizing my wife would not allow her to do so, humbly accepted the money. She thanked my wife repeatedly and asked how she would ever be able to repay her. My wife simply replied, "If you'd like you can repay this by helping someone else in need one day when you're in a position to do so".
    We always try to help strangers in need when we're in a position to do so with the only exception being in cases where it would hurt us, not be just an inconvenience. A stranger likely saved my life over 25 years ago that was under no requirement to do so, and they also refused to take anything in return. Since that day I never look down on those in need and will happily sacrifice my own non-essential money, time or resources simply out of kindness and for the possibility that it may change or save someone's life one day.

    Ice tried to steal this bassline and claim it as his own. Queen and David Bowie sued him for about 10 million, allowing him to use that bassline for that song only. VI tried to say he now owned it but that was never true. Anyway, if you are going to try to steal a bassline, stay away from artists like Queen and David Bowie, they are iconic and you are totally going to get busted. John Deacon (bass) wrote the bassline while Queen was in Switzerland at their recording studio. Bowie lived nearby and stopped in to say hey. They started jamming and drinking and Bowie suggested that they write a song together. They started with John's bassline and this is the song that came out of that session. This is a fan made video. Sadly Queen and Bowie never managed to get into the studio to actually do a video. This is Queen at Wembley 1986 and Bowie at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992. They did a great job putting the two together. If you haven't listened to it yet, Queen: White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith is an incredible song with a long instrumental section that is unbelievable that it is live. Freddie's vocals in White Queen are so fantastic, I know you will love the performance. I checked your page but didn't see White Queen on your list so hopefully I did not miss it.

    (This particular audience interaction by Fred is so iconic, it's been used over the years since then... with Fred STILL conducting audiences from a GIGANTIC onstage video screen. My favorite was at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremonies... SO. COOL!)

      Too bad Johnny has become a somewhat miserable hermit. John and Roger will never acknowledge that out of respect, but the way he totally retracted from public is...well, it's his choice, but he's a total anti-social.

    He did more than sample it. He tried to claim it as his. Queen sued, he lost.
    The song was written after Queen and Bowie ran into each other at a recording studio they had both booked time at. They started talking, Bowie pulled out his most recent version of 'Under Pressure', and they all sat down and rewrote the song. The intro riff was actually written by John Deacon, Queen's bassist, at that meeting of great musical minds.They then went in together to record it, but sadly, never managed to find a time when they could all get together to perform it live.
    If I remember correctly, it cost the thief millions he paid to Queen, to get the rights to release the song he put the stolen intro in.

      The theith also destroyed his career because of his lies as a lot of people (producers, talk show hosts, and musicians) refuse to associate with him after what he did. Now that song is credited to Freddie and Bowie, and all royalty go to charity.
