Largemouth and smallmouth will eat almost anything you put In front of them especially during prespawn.. I’ve caught largemouth on bear hooks, leaves, pieces of sticks, even on raw chicken.. bass are pretty optimistic when it comes to prey variety..
I have a backyard pond with 5-6 small mouth that are always waiting to be fed and they absolutely destroy frogs when I throw them in to them . This summer I plan on catching a small garter snake for them .
Yes. I found this out once fishing in a rock quarry pond as a kid. I found a toad hopping around on the bank, threw him out on the surface for shits and gigs and a smallmouth shot up from about 15 fow to inhale the thing off the surface. I was about 12-13 and didn’t know much about fishing at the time and this always stuck with me. They definitely are opportunists when need be.
Leopard frogs are the best live bait for all kinds of fish hands down. You can just cut a leg off and the smell gets them every time. Catching the little sockets is another trick because they're FAST.
Had to be a pet frog that got released in a pond full of monster smallmouth. Otherwise this would not ever happen. But of course a smallmouth will eat anything that swims. They usually do g ever come across frogs in the wild tho. Toads but they won’t eat toads because the first time they try to eat one, the toad releases poison into the fishes mouth.
I was fishing a debt in the rain a few weeks ago and a couple ton of toad were swimming off of a sand beach on the Mississippi and the Amalie’s were gorging themselves on them
As a froglover 5hat hurt to watch lik dude was a good size and he looked like he was a just having a great day enjoying life taking q swim so sad. I love frog they're so cute. Crying yall I really am lols
