You should do a video on “how to scale your drag”. It’s basically setting the drag at a percentage of the line weights breaking strength using a hand held fishing scale, around 25%.You’d be surprised how tight your drag should be for 10-12 lb. braids.
Sup Senko, been fishing with conventional reels for some time I realize that taking off the line laying control increases your casting distance. Here in Hawaii we use the pen senators 4/0 and up for ulua fishing with 13 foot poles. I always wet the line before casting lessons the burn on the thumbs when casting a sinker. And yes still get that birds nest even after all these years. Keep doing what you, tight lines and Aloha from Hawaii.
Are these the 100-lb fish you hurl a sinker out, then use a second rod and slide a big bait out with a mechanism that travels over the the line from the first rod?
@@RonDevito it's one of the ways we fish called hang bait. In the mainland they call it trolley fishing. Other ways is to cast out a heavy sinker 6oz to 12oz to break away line. Bait is slid down fish sets the hook and the slide stops at a buckle. Lead line breaks and the figh begins.
Hi I have read quite a few comments about why you lost your fish! Fish do get away sometimes that's why it's called fishing and not even catching, it's all part of the game! 🎣👍
Last night I hooked up with what had to be a 20# flathead. Had it at the gunwhale on the boat. It had been spinning a lot. That's what they do. At the last second it flipped it's tail and spit the lure into the boat. Waved bye bye with it's right fin then splashed me with it's tail. Was using a pretty light rig with 20# test braided line. Rhino rod. El cheepo. At least I got to see mine. ;)
I bought my first bait caster rod and line for $ 2. 98 cents back in the 1950's guess I'm old anyway I do a lot of surf fishing here in Florida and using top gear like Shimano's spinning reels in the $ 200 range even though I rinse after each use I found bearings have a habit of seize up or something else breaks after a year or so I send them back to factory some times in a baggie since I can't seem to repair or fix myself Shimano charges $ 25 and normally sends me a new reel which takes 6 to 7 weeks to get back what a great service but a loss of fish time. I recently purchased a Seigler SM bait caster multipier reel lifetime warranty spooled with 20lb mono and a 12foot surf rod I can cast further than my surf spinning reel outfits with less sinker weight and the control of big brutes is much better and I actually out cast an air launch bait tube guy on the beach today. I can take a part a bait caster and do a deep clean and grease without any problems but my hands and those small screws defeat me every time especially the bailer. True it takes time to learn to throw the multiplier reel but once you do you will be using the spinner much less.
can't remember I used it for Carp fishing and would sell the Carp for $ 1- 2 then buy a Pepsi and cupcakes then get back $ . 02 cents foe refund on bottle things sure have changed.
Dude you guys are awesome. Both of you are extremely unorthodox but extremely informational for new fishermen/women. You remind me a lot of myself when I was learning to fish. Keep up the great work and keep the vids come. Blessings to you guys and the fam!! 👍🏻🐠🐟
Thanks for the kind words, alex! Haha we like to keep it a little unorthodox as long as we are helping people 👍🏼 we appreciate you watching and commenting. Thanks for being part of our community
Just a humble piece of advice you never keep reeling when the fish is running, hence why you lost the fish. Live and learn. Good video and tight lines.
Senko Skipper if you have the current they are nice to just drop and let drift. Issue here in Florida, as you explained is the wind. It’s rare that we have a fishing day without 5-15 mile an hour gusts and the backlash..... The thing is the gearing on the penn vs my van staals.. it’s actually pretty fair comparison but on the smaller reels you just don’t get the power..
Thanks for sharing. It was fun to watch! Notice that your line is twisted on your spinning reel? Every crank against the drag puts another twist on your line. You have to tighten down the drag a bit or pump the rod and take up the slack . Have fun!
Your uncle Bill must be loving it over there in the US. Over here that would be a lifetime catch. He say's it's alright lol, you guys are so lucky here at the other end of the Atlantic we are not so lucky.
For the big sharks and tarpon I like the conventional reels too. Might swap out my spinning reels for the smaller fish one of these days to see how it feels but for big guys a conventional setup is king.
Been using a Penn Int (also a gift from my dad) for many years, caught great fish off her. We use it at the beach for our own videos! Great content, thanks for posting man and happy fishing!
You forget to mention that handle of the spinning reel can be moved to the left or the right side of the reel so it is convenient for both left and right handers. Conventional reel is always rod in the ler ft hand, reel handle in the right.
I know that feeling and I've had that look on my face. Great job with the camera and the editing. Caught what fishing is all about, and the true moment. Spinning reel all the way.
Skipper.... what is your opinion on levelwind vs non-levelwind for salt water striped bass and blue fishing? Up in NYC metro, the few surf casters who even use conventional prefer non-levelwind, the rationale being a large, heavy fish can destroy the mechanism. There is a slight casting distance penalty with the levelwind as well. For pier fishing, I'm using Ugly Stik 6' pole with an ancient Penn Levelmatic 940 spooled with 20 lb Trilene Big Game mono. I would not put braid on a rod I'm dead-sticking and not on these older reels (unless with mono backing). For these species would you use a current production Abu Garcia C7000, an Avet 6/4 MC Raptor, or an equivalent sized Daiwa Saltist?
@@ertren6 Yes, of course, however essentially if you do that though, you are talking about the traditional multiplier reels which I grew up with (and still have), like the Penn 49, Penn 500L, up to modern day versions like the Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Thorium etc. These are not baitcasters though, have no magnetic (or even centrifugal) brakes, and mostly lack level winders as well, it's just you, your thumb and the open reel (though the spool tension knob is crucial using those reels). So why/when would I use a baitcaster instead of them ? When I'm casting and retrieving paddletail jigheads, spoons etc whilst standing chest deep in strong tide. Use the traditional multiplier you describe only makes sense if you want to cast a fresh bait in deep onto a sandbank without much wading, and then either stand with your rod, or put it into a rodholder for another rod cast. Different things have different uses, I still use both kinds for both uses, as described.
@@maaifoediedelarey4335 I'm only familiar with current baitcasters lol. I have no experience in the ones you're talking about. Definitely wanna look into them now. Thanks
Great fishing dude! Striper fishing is the best! My favorite along with Corvina. I think its amazing to be able to catch them from the bank like that! A lot less expensive than a boat for sure. But if I may, one thing I noticed that you are doing in the excitement is reeling against the drag while your fish is pulling line. This causes your line to twist up and its hard on your drag system. But your a great fisherman!
I was told to not reel against the drag. I always do it and I have "learned" several times the hard way to try and not do it. I end up having to respool every time.
Not sure if anyone has ever told you but you are never supposed to crank a spinning reel if the fish is going for a run and peeling your drag. Reason: you'll get line twist. Something that will equally ruin the hell out of your day as much as overrun will. The proper way is the pull up on the rod (not high sticking) then on the way down crank. If you're not getting line twist then maybe it doesn't matter. As far as conventional reels/baitcasters if you're fishing at night into the sunrise I prefer a spinning outfit since you can't see a damn thing at night to manage the overruns. Other than that I prefer a conventional because they cast smoother, less chance of line twist, and typically are more rugged and stronger, though spinning reels now are pretty strong. Keep up the good videos and I hope the best for your success with fishing and your business. Tight lines.
There's not a lot of documentation out there, and if you're interested in learning about cranking into the drag, this pro talks about it at 1:00 into his video about line twist. ua-cam.com/video/jbCMGSmAGs4/v-deo.html
You might consider using a true circle hook that turns in on itself. Was hard to see yours but it seemed it may not have been. Once hooked up on a circle it's rare the fish can shake it. Thanks for this video it gives me confidence to surf cast my penn 500
That particular conventional is pretty tough to cast for distance without a back-lash. The best conventionals on the market: Akios, Daiwa Millionaire and Abu Garcia Blue Yonder. Those are specifically designed for surf casting.
love my baitrunners. I got a few Shakespeare Beta 60FS reels for fast river trolling to lake float, I'm looking at loading one up with 30lb braid and using it for surfcasting.
Bad advice saying to use the free float tensioner to control the spool. It adds pressure to the spindle and cauae wear to the spindle. Get a reel with a braking system, either centrifugal or magnetic. The use of using the free float use to be the way untill reels were made with more effiecient systems to slow the spool down
Try a reel that is not a level wind. maybe a slosh 30. Its a GREAT surf fishing reel and will handle the fish you can catch from the surf! Great vids!!
I bought x Shimano Ultegra CI4+ 14000 XSC Reel - ULTCI414000XSC £219.99 just four weeks leg broken , I sent it back to shimano they told me this not their problem , the body is not steel was composite, I don’t recommended for any one
Love your channel man. Keep doing what you’re doing. Learning a lot from you. By the way, what’s your uncle smoking in the background back there? Lol. I saw him puffing on something right after you lost that fish.
looks like you culda had your drag a little tighter for that one that got away on the spinning reel. Fish only needs to pull drag on its hardest runs,.. nice video, great reel info, remember to mention the advantage of spinning reels for casting lighter rigs and lures, simce the conventional needs some weight to throw.
Avet reels make a great conventional lever drag reel with magnetic cast control. After using the SX model for a while I bought an Avet SX Raptor 2 speed that works ridiculously well for fishing bridge pilings and kayak.
hope ur giant stripe bass hunt goes well. for me its spinning reels any day. easy to maintain, look after n operate. overheads tbh requires too many attention its not exactly fun. usually wen i go light tackle i use 2500 and for surfcasting 6000 - 8000 sized reels
Basic_Fishing You're missing a lot of fun.See Asian angler Gong Lei's videos of what can be done with baitcasting reels in expert hands, you'll be floored.
Basic_Fishing i find the multiplier reels are the type of thing that are for people that want to look fancy when they fish like fly fishermen.lol i do all kinds of finishing and i do prefer a spinning reel in fresh water but i prefer round reels for strippers
Steve G i get out around 160yards with bate and 6oz but usually the old man that is not even standing to cast and using the same Bates as me catches more than anyone. Usually once you got a line in the water you got a chance and most of the action is 30ft to 60ft out so spinning reels are all good and some people don't think the added confusion is worth it. It's like driving stick is fun for some and not for others. Getting birds nestled with new line is like doing a burnout and sliding into a tree lol.
@@terrencewrigley8860 I use all three types of reels. When flyfishing fish will only take lures that can't be cast with either spinning or baitcasting, once some very large trout were feeding on insects that were as small as ground black pepper, if you didn't fly fish you just didn't catch any.As for baitcasting, it's no big deal to lay out long smooth casts and put a lure exactly where you want it.Spinning is the most versatile tackle there is,but it doesn't have the accuracy of baitcasting nor can it throw the nearly weightless flies to rising fish.No need to feel bad if you don't happen to baitcast or fly fish do what is most fun for you.
I just got a conventional reel and I went to a lake to practice how to cast. I don’t know why it goes into gear as soon as I swing the rod forward. Am I doing something wrong?
Aww was hoping you would land that striper, was going to be a good fish. The drag was a bit too loose, not enough tension. Also when the fish is running, stop reeling, you were twisting your line when the drag is spinning and you are reeling. I also fish with blood worms. When you put the blood worm on your hook, try to put the whole worm on the hook and go all the way up the hook and up the leader with the blood worm from the mouth end to the tail end with out poking out of the worm. This keeps all the juicy blood from coming out all over your hand and stays inside the worm. The worms blood will last longer in the water and have a stronger scent in the water. You can cast super far with out any of the worm breaking off as well. Sometimes I can land 2 Stripers with the same worm, as the worm will still be on the hook after it has been hit. Love the channel, love the videos. Fish On!! :D
Do not wind while he is taking line...you are putting twist in your line...love your vidios. You two make a nice couple and seems as though you two really are enjoying life!
I have the drag set to the tightest because I’m afraid if I use the drag, the fish is fighting in the water for too long and it will eventually break off. Am I right?
What size Shimano was it? What kind of rod? My son gave me a Shimano 1200 baitrunner but I can't figure out what would be a good rod for it. I prefer 2 piece .
Don't know if u know or not but on the spinner u shouldn't wind while you reel is screaming you'll wear out the bearings and put a twist in the line tighten it up and reel in when its stopped screaming
Beginner fishing learner here. He uses his finger before it hits the floor (I guess to stop it or slow it down), I tried that I the line burn/cut my thumb with my 'baitcasting'/'levelwind' reel and yes I get bird's nest too. They seem complicated to use. Is there a benefit vs a spinning reel worth learning? Do they do something that a spinning reel cannot do? Or can you do something with a bait casting reel that you cannot do with a spinning reel?
Never use your float spool tension knob to slow reel down. It puts extra pressure on the spindle and causes excess wear. That multiplier reel is a boat reel and not designed for casting. Use a multiplier (conventional) which comes with either mechanical centrifugal breaks or mag breaks and an open cage so you can grip.the spool when casting.
I don't know a thing about these reels, would you mind explaining what you mean a bit simpler? I'm going to get into surf fishing here (now that I live in Australia), and would like to be armed with some good knowledge before I start shopping. Thanks in advance!
@Daniel Hutton the float tension know is tye knob you turn that puts pressure on the spindle and makes it harder for the reel to spin freely. Reels designed for casting have either magnetic blocks or little plastic blocks in them that when you cast, the spinning of the spool either pushes the plastic blocks outwards so they rub against a metal ring in the side plate, or causes a small magnetic field that slows the spinning spool. As the spool slows down, the braking force of either the magnetic or plastic blocks reduces.
I'm a devout spinning reel user. Spinners over baitcasters at night, casting into the wind, fishing in the rain and braid makes them shine. As far as casting distance it's a wash I have thrown 24oz on a spinner you just need a leather finger guard and you can bomb it.
*Very convenient, not bulky has a good feel in the hand I did order a second one which is much shorter in length for short casting. If you’re not fishing for sharks it’s a great deal.*
We call those Multiplier reels over the pond though ideally we wouldn't use one with a guide (for casting we use those ones on boats) because it reduces the casting distance, saying that I still use my cheap NGT FRL-LS3000 reel for casting and that has a guide. Also if you want to get even more distance from it try learning to pendulum cast :)
Sorry I missed the live broadcast it’s crazy right now in Sarasota Florida we got the 88 Daniel tarpon tournament so that’s been a bit nuts got the CCA tagged red fish catch and release there’s all kind of fish you can enter in to that thing and the freshwater FWC has tournament year around so it’s crazy right now love the videos I have both conventional and spinning and I just depends on where I’m fishing and for what?😎

Never reel in when your drag is going you'll twist the line plus tighting your drag

You should do a video on “how to scale your drag”. It’s basically setting the drag at a percentage of the line weights breaking strength using a hand held fishing scale, around 25%.You’d be surprised how tight your drag should be for 10-12 lb. braids.

Try a reel that is not a level wind. maybe a slosh 30. Its a GREAT surf fishing reel and will handle the fish you can catch from the surf! Great vids!!
4 years later I'd bet you would fight that fish a little different?
Would love to see more baitcaster info
I bought x Shimano Ultegra CI4+ 14000 XSC Reel - ULTCI414000XSC £219.99 just four weeks leg broken , I sent it back to shimano they told me this not their problem , the body is not steel was composite, I don’t recommended for any one
For salt water I use mostly casting reels for the power a small casting reel will have more power than a large spinning reel
Nice vid guys! I get soo frustrated using conventional reels. After the 2nd or 3rd birds nest I end up back to the spinning reels lol.
Agree.waist of money
Can't wait to use the salted squid, thanks guys
But they cost alot
Your face at the end of video is priceless, every fishermen has had that face one time or another. Keep it up senko that 30 lbs. Will come soon
Haha thanks Juan. It will keep me coming back for sure lol
hope ur giant stripe bass hunt goes well. for me its spinning reels any day. easy to maintain, look after n operate. overheads tbh requires too many attention its not exactly fun. usually wen i go light tackle i use 2500 and for surfcasting 6000 - 8000 sized reels
Understandable! I use mostly spinning myself. Thanks for sharing!
What rod do you use with the penn
Now you know how your buddy Louie feels in your other video....The big one that go away ....so many fish! so so many, that feeling sticks with us all.
Broo i felt your pain 100% 😱😱😱🙈. That happened to me with a monster blue last season . Jumped twice on me and i ended up losing it by the rocks.
One day , we will see skipper teach his son how to fish, and the cycle of fishing will continue, i have spoken .
good evening po happy to watch your blog completely ..i learned alot God Bless po
11:00 to 11:12 is my favorite part of this video. What he was thinking to himself was that the drag was way to loose,,,,
I just got a conventional reel and I went to a lake to practice how to cast.
4:52 I can't tell when it hits the ground because once it hits the water I can't see it any more. I guess about ten seconds after it hits the water?
You should be able to feel it if you don’t let too much line out after the cast
I have the drag set to the tightest because I’m afraid if I use the drag, the fish is fighting in the water for too long and it will eventually break off. Am I right?
Your big strike your drag was a little loose.Good strike!!Good video
Great episode, we need to learn more about the conventional reels please
Great advice on your videos. Thanks for sharing!
Nice vid guys. And a waa waa wooo for the pulled hook
Ahaha waa waa woo!
A reason i like spinning reels with rear drag is the ease of ajustment playing big fish!
This was a great overview. I like that Penn. It's a real classic. Nice size too.
What kind of rod did u use? I couldnt find surf rods with enough guide rings to be used with Conventional Reels.
I just realized you were in Maryland. I am km Virginia beach!!! Great channel
hey skipper the 975 penn has a cast control on the left side inside slows the spool so no bird nest there is three settings 4, 2, 0,
Do you have a video on how to use your thumb for conventional reeling in? Please also cover how braid behaves vs mono on this setting.
I'm a devout spinning reel user. Spinners over baitcasters at night, casting into the wind, fishing in the rain and braid makes them shine. As far as casting distance it's a wash I have thrown 24oz on a spinner you just need a leather finger guard and you can bomb it.
Wow I just sliced my finger open recently casting too heavy on braid. I’m going to look into that leather guard! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful ending
I love the look of conventional reels especially late 1800s to mid 1950s, i wish someone would make a modern conventional reel with classic aesthetics
I felt your pain and anguish! The sad music was hilarious though.
😂😭😂😭
*Very convenient, not bulky has a good feel in the hand I did order a second one which is much shorter in length for short casting. If you’re not fishing for sharks it’s a great deal.*
Nice job thank you for sharing
We call those Multiplier reels over the pond though ideally we wouldn't use one with a guide (for casting we use those ones on boats) because it reduces the casting distance, saying that I still use my cheap NGT FRL-LS3000 reel for casting and that has a guide.
Also if you want to get even more distance from it try learning to pendulum cast :)
Sorry I missed the live broadcast it’s crazy right now in Sarasota Florida we got the 88 Daniel tarpon tournament so that’s been a bit nuts got the CCA tagged red fish catch and release there’s all kind of fish you can enter in to that thing and the freshwater FWC has tournament year around so it’s crazy right now love the videos I have both conventional and spinning and I just depends on where I’m fishing and for what?😎
Thank you this video is exactly what I needed
Nice video quality. What camera did you use? Was there a separate microphone?
Hey Skipper
How to tell the difference between a surf casting rod and a surf spinning rod. I'm a bit confused surf cating rod dont have trigger aswell.
Man that penn international is beautiful! I don’t really use conventional that often.
Same Jeremy! This is one of the only conventional I own and use. It’s a good change though!
