  • . Honda e:Ny1 EV Review. Why this new Honda E electric sequel is the wrong car at the wrong timeIs this the best Honda could do? After breaking the internet 4+ years ago with their cartoonish Honda E city car, this is Honda's second new electric car - a more family friendly offering with HRV looks, WLTP EV range of 256 miles and price tag in the thick of brilliant, roomy 300-mile Teslas, Hyundais and Kias. But is it any good?
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show. Subscribed?
Sadly the E only came with one battery size, was expensive and had a miniscule boot, meaning instead of tech lifting the design masterpiece Honda has weirdly made the decision to discontinue it. And instead we have the more conventional, more expensive, terribly titled e:NY1. Jonny is far from elated.

Great real world assessment of this vehicle and the video was way less boring than the car is. No one should by this car and when they don’t Honda will just conclude that no one is interested and they’ll keep pushing out their ICE vehicles. It’s a real shame as many non enthusiast drivers do stick with the same manufacturer more and this will convince their many loyal customers to delay their transition.
Would definitely buy anything else instead of this! BYD Atto 3 or Volvo V30 instead.

I don't think Honda making an EV to rival Hyundai is as easy as you say. Honda are a *long* way behind Hyundai on EVs, they can't just magic the R&D of catching up overnight! That's at least five years of R&D by which Hyundai are ahead of Honda, if not more.

With the two new concepts, Honda 0 saloon and Honda 0 MPV, Honda announced a focus on "artistic design". So I think Honda realise that this ultra-conservative styling that they have rolled out over the past couple of model years is a mistake. As you would expect, the Honda 0 saloon's styling like a stretched Lamborghini Diablo or example of 1970's retro-futurism has been polarised between people who love it and people who hate it, but I guess this is better than everyone thinking your cars are too boring!

    • @The_Noticer.

Japanese car brands see EV as a lost cause. They all have token cars in their portfolio because they're obligated to, and that's it. Mazda, Honda and Toyota all simply dont care about them. And are happy to have all the UDM and EDM brands lose their shirts over it. They dont expect to make money on them, they dont expect to sell many of them. They make their money on Pilots, CRV's, HRV's and Civics. Because those are the cars people buy, and keep.
The current formula of EV cars just isn't a winning formula. Not for the environment and not for your wallet. When they solve the battery problem and replace it with something viable, im sure they will put in more of an effort to create a viable product. The whole idea about EV's being simpler and therefor more reliable is a joke. Look at how complicated the heating/cooling circuit is on a Tesla. And a good ICE outlasts a battery pack several times. I think with the recent cars Honda has been putting out, they know how to build one if they want to. But the truth is, in this case they just want a token vehicle.
The fact it is perplexing to a car journo why this is a throwaway car to Honda, is beyond me. I guess they really bought into the notion that EV's are a viable product that has mass appeal. They dont. They are too expensive, too complicated because of the batteries, require too many rare materials to produce and they are not long-time purchases. Noone buys an EV, they all lease them.
Well what happens to them when that period is over. Or what is someone realises that he would actually like to own his own vehicle?

It’s a seriously disappointing EV. Love your review, Jonny, but you’re definitely not the only reviewer to think this is a total lemon. Bjorn Nyland’s is worth a watch; terrible economy, useless charging speed. I don’t want to believe that Honda have made a car to try and prove that EVs aren’t ready for the mainstream yet and to keep on pushing ICE & soft hybrid, but this one really isn’t ready for the mainstream market. Maybe in 2017, but definitely not 2024. What a waste.

I get the feeling Honda and Toyota have developed deliberately poor EVs so they can say based on their sales figures that no one wants EVs. But what they’ve failed to recognise, like VW, is that if you develop a poor EV, buyers that want an EV will not stick to their brand and stick with an ICE car, they’ll just find a good one to buy from another manufacturer.
Buyers are not so stupid that they’ll buy substandard products at a higher price.

The one thing missing from the review is that Honda shipped this to Europe to have something there, but in reality it's a Chinese market vehicle designed and manufactured by Honda's Chinese subsidiaries, originally released two years ago. It wasn't designed for western markets, isn't new, and that fwd Bev platform is only going to be for Chinese made Hondas. As a product for Europe, it seems like more of a placeholder to say they're selling something instead of it being an actual sequel to the e.
Still, I very much agree with Jonny; it beats me why anyone would think it would be worth importing them to Europe at that price. At least they realized it wouldn't sell in the US (even though they played the same game with us by giving us a worse large Chinese model called an HRV instead of the latest HRV model sold in the rest of the world.)

No one is buying VW EV's. This company is cutting production of EVS. Honda does not see its future as a producer of EVS and see the short term future in hybrids (hence the excellent Civic. When it produces cars like the EY1 it is just paying lip service to the EV market and does not see itself as a serious contender.

I love my Honda e, even though it has terrible range (especially in the winter) and charges slowly. It took one test drive to totally sell me on the car - the brilliant chassis, gorgeous design, and obvious passion that went into the car sold me immediately. Everywhere you look, there's something that someone clearly thought about and put there to make it a better place to spend time in. For my daily commute into the city from a nearby village, I still can't think of a better car for me. It's the only car my partner has ever liked, and I don't think I would be able to ever sell it. As someone who prior to the Honda e hadn't ever considered an electric car (and still isn't interested in any other electric cars), this is immensely impactful.
I say this all to emphasize how depressing this review is to me. I knew the e wasn't going to be a success - it was too expensive, too small, and had too short a range - but to see a company like Honda retreat into such mediocre blandness so soon after making such an iconic car is really sad. I fear that these special "Honda moments" of brilliant eccentricity may disappear entirely, and the industry will be much worse for it.
Awesome work as always, wish you the best!

Sad to see Honda shooting themselves in the foot with the Euro version of the Dongfeng Honda e:NS1. Indeed a Jazz EV would be perfect. And same as the E, they don't seem to want to sell it at all - here in Portugal it starts at ~54k EUR and the highest trim level at ~58k EUR before some bits like rubber mats. (Edit: probably not including transportation and document fees, as the website mentions in very small type that one should check with the dealership for a definitive quote)
For ~54k EUR you can get... a Tesla Model Y Long Range with your color of choice, and if you go with the default (white) it'll be just under 50k EUR, including transportation and document fees (49990 EUR). And it has a heat pump! (Not a Tesla owner, BTW, just looking at prices and seeing many Model Y and Model 3 around the Lisbon area)

9:00 Current HR-V and Jazz aren't mild-hybrid, they are full-hybrid. The electric motor make the full power quoted in the car specs. Most of the time the traction is entirely electric, with the engine operating just as a generator. Yes. Typical risk adverse Japanese management mentality. Don't ask whi the e did not sell (one reason: substandard range), just throw the baby out with the bathwater like F'n idiots. Now Honda have convinced themselves EVs are really not the future, canceled their plans to partner with GM (probably a wise choice) and not partnering with their already existing Chinese partners that could deliver them a better powertrain in less than a year using most of the e platform and get them back in the game. F'n gutless, risk-adverse, self-defeating management. Honda has sone great engineers but it seems not even average managers any longer.,

I agree this car doesn't do anything for anyone you can see by the massive £8000 finance bonuses they are offering on it now on the website they have messed the price up. So many cars you could have instead. I like you are upset they have not made a great electric car this time round. They have made some strange choices recently the CR-V phev in FWD only and a ZR-V which is almost size of CR-V but slightly lower and shorter but again only FWD.
I also think the CR-V which has gone up in price by lots from when i got mine is getting to the point where you can buy a mid spec Lexus NX unless Honda applies lots of discounts. Hope they come back to form.

As a Honda e owner I was quite interested to see the next electric vehicle from Honda. When I saw this materialized boringness I gave up. What can you say about this vehicle... you are 100% correct with that one word: "Sad".

Thanks for the honest review. Three of five vehicles in the family are Honda products and we agree that it doesn't have what we expect from the brand. It kept making me think it was a VW.

I loved the dash on the Honda E. So frustrating that they have followed the crowd and stuck a "Tablet" on to the dash. Would all manufacturers stop doing this. It's a real deal breaker for me.

I saw recently at a fair and my first thought was 'Glad that Honda has finally shown up to the party!'. I found the proportions agreeable, however I didn't know about the price, the boot, the charging speed. That's disappointing then. Thanks for the review.

I do not mind "small-ish" batteries (190 mile - 260 mile range). Less headaches and they suit most people's commutes, at least those who dont live on the motorway.

When the e came out as a concept, they paired it with a little 2 seater sports car that was equally cute.
Such a shame that never saw the light of day...

I think this is an example of how cars of the future will be, boring boxes that no one can enjoy to drive , cars used to be cool and something to be proud of having, this model is as exiting as a washing machine , it does the job but nothing to be enjoyed.

I think you're spot on. The E is on my short list of dream cars. We love our Pilot here in the States, but an E would be an incredible urban vehicle.
