@ Why might it be too expensive? The Ford Focus starts at £28k, and this will be a few thousands pounds cheaper. Plenty of Focuses seem to be sold, and people don't seem to feel they're way too expensive.....
I'm not a huge EV fan, but I do like this. Surely this is the way the industry needs to go instead of making huge 2.5 tonne SUVs and chasing crazy 0-60 times.
The "crazy" 0-60 times are a by-product of having a big enough battery to give medium-large family sized cars a decent range. Of course fast 0-60 also sells cars and has done since before the Renault 5 GT Turbo was around
Renault have absolutely nailed the design, it's so refreshing to see colourful paint jobs instead of the miserable black, white and silver palette we've become accustomed too in the UK. Also huge props to Renault for giving us PHYSICAL BUTTONS for heater controls! They really are on to a winner here. Excited to see what they do with the Twingo and R4
It looks fantastic, completely agree, the colours add to the design and we need more of this to avoid cars becoming like white goods in the EV era. It's good to have a bit of personality and creativity.
195-55 is a good tyre proportion for today’s horrible roads. However I would go for the steel wheels I might even fit aftermarket steels (with exact same spec of course). They can be trashed by potholes without breaking your wallet.

A baguette carrier! That is a tour de force of design. Not since the VW Beetle flower vase has there been a whimiscal touch in a car like this! Fantastique. Bravo, Renault.
It is a beautiful looking thing both inside and out. So want one. Thanks Jonny for all the interesting details. Looks like it could be really fun on the road too, which is my only real gripe about my Corsa E. 2 things made me question their choices 1) 80 to 100kw charging is on the slow side, especially if you had the smaller battery and wanted to go further. 2) Reno really reminded me of the Microsoft Paperclip, the most annoying ’helper’ ever!
Johnny I don’t normally sit through a whole new car review but I loved the original Renault five and this new R5 really looks fantastic. Just as with the mini and the Fiat 500, I know the ladies will love this car and with five doors, five seats and a decent boot who can’t love it? P.s. nicely presented by you. 🙏
This is an 11/10. It has a sense of history, the interior feels human and emotive, not like many of the otherer electric cars and both inside outside design is so pretty. The yellow interior is stunning, the use of natural fabrics makes the interior feel human, not robotic. Everything about this is spot on. I really wish this was an ice car tbh but it's so good I'm willing to forget it's an Ev. I would 1000% buy one, it's such an endearing design
Wow, the iconic Renault 5 is back! This was my first new car years ago that my parents bought me when I graduated from college. The best and finest suspension ever seen for its class along with the most comfortable and well designed seats, makes it fun to drive. It's when I fell in love with Renault and it continues to this day. It is nice to see it with a new modern uplift but maintaining its charming essence, its sporty interior and distinctive lines that make it unmistakable to say that the Renault 5 is here
This is the sort of stance I wanted the Honda E to have. I was gutted when they made it more vanilla when it went into production. This looks absolutely stunning.
The Honda E is now no longer on sale new. Maybe just as well now this Renault has arrived. I can't imagine many would choose a Honda E over this, with it's *way* more stylish design at £5k less.......
Wow, I have never wanted an electric car before, but I really want one of these! Jonny’s excellent presenting also make me want one even more! The Honda e looked good but didn’t quite tick all the boxes, this definitely does. Great job Renault… now, where do I order one?
I'd say that is probably the best modern , retro inspired designs so for on a modern EV. I do like the idea of the use of the heating system, something EV seems to fall down on, in my opinion. Well done Renault . Nice work.
I really love the colours, especially the green 👍🏻, to get people interested in electric cars, this is the way to do it ! Affordable funky cars, with an option on battery size and distance ! It looks like it should be great to drive also. We will have to see how you get on 👍🏻
Yup, I don't really see the attraction - it's a step in the right direction but it's not yet where I need a value EV to be. This fat green jellybean can't fit adults in the back seats and will probably have 150 mile "real world in countries where winter exists" range for 25k.. no thanks!
Another great video Jonny. Keep them coming! I chuckle everytime you start talking about the wheels because you know the black circles promo is coming up!!
Wow. Great video 👍😁. You are the most detailed reporter I know of. The note book thats so retro cool looking, I really feel the impression you for this car. Thanks for sharing❤
The upholstery depends on which model you choose, then you have different choices for the outside color, which are again slightly different for each model...
Can't help thinking they missed a trick.? Wouldn't it have been better to have had the cable storage up front. As it stands, you'd have to open the boot, lift the floor to get out the cable, then walk round the side to plug it in. In the pouring rain. (This is England)
If I'm going any great distance, I just put my charge cable in a plastic bag on top of the stuff in the boot......I never store it *under* stuff if I think I will need it.....
As a lifelong Reno-phile from when I had a Renault R8 for my first car, wow!…. Love it! Modern tech with the old style French flair and character that the original R5 had. Not for everyone but I love it. Great video👍
Jonny has unequaled enthusiasm for nearly all cars. Renault et al are super lucky to have dudes like him out there. If that wasn't the case, cars like this would pass by unnoticed- for sure..
I’m not usually a fan of Renault’s latest stuff over the past decade or more, but this looks beautifully done by Renault! Very reminiscent in so many ways of the original Renault 5, and incredible that they’ve kept the price point within reach.
Great video Johnny. Very informative and thank you for doing the research. I have a Megane RS which I track on track days and this looks like a great road car. Great to have the detail that you provided.
I quite quite like this, although it is a little small for me. My Megane E-Tech Techno+ arrives in two weeks! Renault killing it with their EV offering.
What a gorgeous car. Thought the Zoe was unique but this is masterpiece. Used to own a Renault 5 in the 90s. Jean-Michelle Jarre is a very popular French musician.
Oh, I want one SO much!! It's lovely - all the styling cues of the original R5 (tick), looks like it has column change (double tick, as former R16 owner) but there's one thing I'll imagine that will be missing, sadly: that lovely roly-poly ride from the all-torsion bar suspension of the original.
What an excellent preview. Love the styling but surprised that it doesn’t offer more range than the ZE50. Maybe like the Zoe, it will get battery upgrades with every future revision.
This will be the hit of 2025. They knocked it out of the park. 10:47 what Johnny said here really resonated with me, I truly believe that too. Wonderful presentation as always. REALLY want one of these 😭😭
I will never understand why these manufacturers don’t just build a retro car. The people love the old fashioned designs in and out but with a new and reliable technology it would be a success for sure. Just do it
Jonny, I have to say…the level of detail you go into with your car reviews puts you head and shoulders above anyone else and any other channel on UA-cam…Keep them coming 👍
This car is stunning and so happy that Renault design is back after so many years, even decades, in the wilderness. Also, it appears they have embedded the design with real tech advances in true French fashion. I hope this really is the real deal that it looks like.
Jonny great scoop and as ever superb production values. Really enjoy the detail in your vids and love the way you tell the story of this new 5. Just wondered can you not control where the adverts appear? They are breaking in mid word sometimes! Maybe UA-cam doesn’t let you set the break points? All the best, D
I own a Zoe currently and my first car was a Renault 5, so I’m very interested to see the new R5 in the metal. The idea of a twin motor RS is really exciting.
Just to add my pennys worth. We had a 1973 R5L in metallic green, brown vinyl interior and woven cane roof lining. I think this may be the baguette basket reference. My mother never liked it after driving a pre reg Mini since 1960. Steering too heavy and leaned too much in corners. Got a Golf 1.1 in 1976, happy.
Absolutely love it. Sections all around the r5 that remind me of my original gt5. I’m not in to ev’s not yet at least but this model is swaying me towards an ev. Think I’ll be booking a test drive when possible. Love the way it looks both outside and in side. Well done Renault
Great design, 110 KW motor, 52 kWh battery pack.. very practical size for urban driving/parking.. this is going to be such a great car for the daily commute and touring around in the weekend. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED FOR A CAR LAUNCH. I absolutely adore it. I ADORE IT. Renault, bravo.
I’ll be ordering uk asap.
Watched all R5 videos lately and this is the best one by far.
New subscriber👍🏻
Welcome aboard TLBS 👌🏾
I have had all 3 generations of ZOE so guess this will have to find it's way on my drive, been looking forward to this for years and i am not disappointed...
That yellow interior is immense.
Isn't it just?
@@TheLateBrakeShow Do you know fi you can get the green exterior with the yellow interior? That lemon-lime combo would be perfect.....sadly as an American it is off the menu though, so I will keep driving my 1998 Nissan Sentra until I move to Sweden in a few years.
A baguette carrier! That is a tour de force of design. Not since the VW Beetle flower vase has there been a whimiscal touch in a car like this! Fantastique. Bravo, Renault.
Renault are my favourite manufacturer. Great design and not afraid to be bold. Looks brilliant. Well done guys ✌🏻
Love it! The first EV I've seen that I would actually consider buying! I wish Renault every success with it.
Well done Jonny and Renault : a suitably characterful review, for a wonderfully characterful car.
I can't imagine many would choose a Honda E over this, with it's *way* more stylish design at £5k less.......
bloody love it reminds me of my first car purchase a second hand light metallic blue Renault 5 GT Turbo in my early 20s
Love the interior and seats. Takes me back to my days when I owned a Renault 5 GT Turbo.
I bought a new Renault 5 in 1981 and loved it, although it was a bit feeble in the engine department. This is just what I want, a compact hatchback.
Any day a new, compact hatch comes to market is a good day--wish we got these in the US!
This is the long awaited future of motoring, loving every detail 👍 great video Jonny look forward to the road test
imagine being killed by a baguette when the airbag goes off
Wow, I have never wanted an electric car before, but I really want one of these! Jonny’s excellent presenting also make me want one even more! The Honda e looked good but didn’t quite tick all the boxes, this definitely does. Great job Renault… now, where do I order one?
Yes, Jonny's relaxed but informative style of presentation makes you want to hear more. Unlike the other bloke, pushing sticks up exhaust pipes.
I'd say that is probably the best modern , retro inspired designs so for on a modern EV. I do like the idea of the use of the heating system, something EV seems to fall down on, in my opinion. Well done Renault . Nice work.
We love baguette's too in the US. And fun, sporty, beautiful, colorful little cars!
I really love the colours, especially the green 👍🏻, to get people interested in electric cars, this is the way to do it ! Affordable funky cars, with an option on battery size and distance ! It looks like it should be great to drive also.
We will have to see how you get on 👍🏻
Rather like those of us who were around when the original R5 came out, it has undergone a bit of expansion . . .
Yup, I don't really see the attraction - it's a step in the right direction but it's not yet where I need a value EV to be. This fat green jellybean can't fit adults in the back seats and will probably have 150 mile "real world in countries where winter exists" range for 25k.. no thanks!
Name a car that hasn't?
I also remember Renault 5 of old and they were pretty awful. Having to sell sub standard goods by using retro appeal is sad.
@@CaptainHoratioPugwash Remind me what a 50 year old Citroen Ami looked like
if a clio and a R5 had a baby... this is it.. Well done Renault.. Super french and super cool :) Great review as always!!
Another great video Jonny. Keep them coming! I chuckle everytime you start talking about the wheels because you know the black circles promo is coming up!!
That's the idea...
The last tyres I got, I got them via Asda Tyres. They were a bit cheaper than Black Circles.
Wow. Great video 👍😁. You are the most detailed reporter I know of. The note book thats so retro cool looking, I really feel the impression you for this car.
Thanks for sharing❤
Looks ace in green.
I wonder if you can spec body colour and interior colours separately or do they come as combined options.
The upholstery depends on which model you choose, then you have different choices for the outside color, which are again slightly different for each model...
This is so nice design and proper sized electric car for my use. There is already lot of hype brewing for this car.
And the hype will be matched by the waiting list.. At least Renault will be pleased with that..
@@jlzab6914 Fair enough. But it does rain a LOT, here, 😂
@@paulrak 😂
This design is automotive perfection ( in my eyes) it’s modern retro done perfectly inside and out.💚🖤💚🖤💚🖤
Just found your channel! Impressive and detailed review, Wow. Most detailed R5 introduction review.
We really are going somewhere with that car. Great product.
So cool. Renault have designed this beautifully.
As a lifelong Reno-phile from when I had a Renault R8 for my first car, wow!…. Love it! Modern tech with the old style French flair and character that the original R5 had. Not for everyone but I love it. Great video👍
Really good video, Jonny. Love this new Renault, at last a new car that isn’t “meh”!!
It's gorgeous. I wish it had both Electric and ICE available.
When's the 1108cc version coming out?
It isn't. Electric only.....
Got a ID Buzz in January....if I won the lottery I'd have this as my second car......brilliant review as always.....renault onto a winner with this
Yes, this is more like it! Will look forward to you having one on the road for us Jonny 👍
Very nice looking car shame it is not available in a petrol version I would suspect it would be in very high demand.
You won't see too many newly introduced petrol cars now......
A petrol version would be incredibly slow and also redundant. Like saying; wouldn't this car be so much better if it was pulled by a horse.
@darrens3 "incredibly slow" 😂
Yeah, just give every idiot on the road a car that does 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, that's going to end well
This will be in high demand as well. This will be a bestseller for sure.
Shame it's electric and therefore so bad for the environment
🤦🤦
Too bad it's an EV. Petrol would be a blast.
Great video Johnny. Very informative and thank you for doing the research.
I have a Megane RS which I track on track days and this looks like a great road car.
Great to have the detail that you provided.
Great video Jonny. If I had the money I'd be really keen on getting one of these in a bright colour!
30 secs in "it's fully electric..."
Groan...
😅
Oh I so want one. My first car was a 5 and it was … terrible. But I loved it. This looks like it has tons of character, a really lovable fun car.
A brilliant review Jonny. I like it.
Wow wow, a cool car, love the retro feel and the three spoke steering wheel.
Love the bright colour options.
Great review as always, also loving the new glasses! If you owned one, would you call it Johnny 5?
There was a Johnny 7 around 50 odd years ago, a fancy kids toy gun with lots of extra add ons......
I quite quite like this, although it is a little small for me. My Megane E-Tech Techno+ arrives in two weeks! Renault killing it with their EV offering.
This will never come to the states but it would be perfect for our house. Love the column shifter. I wish the Bolt was this well laid out.
Brilliant design and (on paper), brilliant execution.
That's no problem. Just buy an old Land Rover Discovery, then you'll scrape the door handles at every corner....
Just do it
Looks fab! Very exciting and a really well articulated walk around. Thx!
I loved my 5 with its roll back roof, bright yellow paint and fun attitude. Drove that car from Toronto to Vancouver twice. Too much fun
Just driving back from Paris at the moment and followed a camouflaged mule of the new Renault 5. What a shape!!Thanks for the awesome vids 👏 🙌 👌
This is going to sell like crazy in Europe.
Edit 1: and I forgot to mention the charging rates and even a heat pump!
Edit 2: I think I've fallen for this.. it has this very nice balance between classic design and feeling just so fresh and futuristic. "Concept car" vibes without becoming absurd.
Edit 3: V2L and V2G? Oh man take my money :D
You got me with baguette... take my money! :D What a lovely car. Childhood memories.
