Thank you for posting this. In terms of Essentials I understand if you go to preferences on Ableton and select mpk49 instead of mpk249 this may fix the issue? Just wondering? So you have to manually map your pads to launch? What about the saving of the presets? Can you save them per project? I know you are not an Ableton user, but I was just wondering, how well this handles all your presets per project? As opposed to the Novation Impulse. They use a software called Automap. I was curious if this is comparable? Again thank you!
I'm trying to do something similar with FL Studio and a Novation Impulse controller. I can launch patterns(clips in your case) in performance mode in FL Studio from my laptop qwerty keyboard using the numbers. Have to press spacebar or play on the Novation to start but that's OK. I haven't figured out how to do with with pads on the Novation yet. The transport on the Novation works but only for play, stop, etc... There must be a way to do this in FL.
If you're using a USB hub it may not work. Has to have a direct USB cord from MPK to computer. Otherwise it may have something to do with MIDI settings in Ableton.

Control surface:MPK249 Input:none Output: Microsoft GS Wavetable synth. So that means i can't have an Input MIDI Port. I am a real newbie and i could use some help.

Just got my akai midi keyboard controller i named her kick of juice im going to create dance beats for my niece paris she just move to atl georgia she will rap and sing plus dance ill also create music for mayme & margo dream squad administrative inc need beats call kick of juice beats comming soon
I don't like essentials either.Building by sequence instead of tracks is bull shit!I can't believe that akai put essentials and ableton lite in the mpk bundle and ableton is more compatible!

I don't quite remember but i think i just unplugged all my USB stuff and plugged the MPK in first and then the others.
