Thx for your fast reply! Went to a store today and did a shootout of several midi keyboards. Seems that I was on the right way cause I went with the mpk 249 in the end ;) Tested it against Novation Remote SL 49 MKII, M-Audio Axiom Air 49, NI Komplete Kontrol S49, Korg Taktile 49. The Novation had the best keys for sure, but the MPK was really close. The pads of the MPK are smaller than on other Akai products but very responsive. Faders, knobs and buttons feeling very sturdy and have a nice click feel to it. The overall build quality of the unit is very good. For me it was the best compromise in functionality, build quality and design wise. I'm really looking forward to have a lot of fun with it :) Happy beatmaking!!!
Just got this machine and I'm going NUTS trying to figure out how to loop a simple drum kick in ableton live which came with it. As a pianist, I am not used to this complex computer stuff on the software, but this video should make my experience much easier. Thank you!
Very slick midi controller.. I want one, and im not sure if to buy MPK 249 or M-audio code 49, or both. They are both super slick and with ton on functions.
Joey. If you hold down the pad it will sustain. You can not set up an envelope for the pads like you could in a synth or a sampler that I'm aware of. Great question.
Hey Bob! Since I see a LPD8 in the background which i own, too: How do the pads on the MPK 249 compare to the LPD8 and the first generation of the MPK? I just use the LPD8 for controlling my cue points in Serato Scratch Live, cause to me they are horrible for playing drums on them or to lay down my sample chops ;)!!! THX!!!
Interesting...They are very similar...Fact is the pads on the LPD8 are slightly larger...More surface area...Id say about 10-15% larger. The feel and response is similar. The LPD8 Pads are a little bit spongier. I personally like them both. Just be forewarned that the pads on the MPK249 are just a little bit smaller. If you didn't like the pads on the LPD8 you probably will not like them on the MPK249. I do.....Compared to the original MPK? No freakin' comparison. The pads on the original MPK were stiff and had NO LIFE. I hated them. Hope this helps...Thanks for the question.
Man thanks for this, it helped a ton. I'm new to using this keyboard and I learn by watching so the manual that came with it only got me so far. You'd figure Akai would have put out some video tutorials on how to use it. lol Great tutorial!
Hey! Nice job yoyr video is more helpful than others.. I just want to ask you. Could i use it without laptop and software? Could i use it only like a keyboard and record my live sessions? Thanks!
Jack/Valour: I forgot to answer the original post. The answer is a resounding YES. The "Note Repeat" function stays in time in the beginning, middle and measure 200 of a song in both Logic X and Logic 9. How this answers your concerns.
Interesting... but how do the _keys_ feel? I mean like... in comparison to something like an Axiom 49. I read somewhere that these keys don't feel "piano"-ish, more like synth keys...
Thank you, and sorry that I didn't see your other message first before making a new one. Another question. The lights under the MPC pads, what controls that, is it hardware controlled, or do you have to be running their proprietary MPC Essentials software at the same time to get control over the lights. I would want to make all the pads dark and only light up when they're being pressed.
I was wondering if the pads were pressure sensative like on the MPC's. I think that's probably one of the most "hidden" features a lot of non-MPC users don't realize or know about.
THAT is a great question...Yes the pads do respond to Aftertouch and I consider that responding to pressure, so yes. Akai included most everything. Thanks for the comment.
thanks for the video. when you record with note repeat do you have quantize on? when i quantize it messes up the notes i played and when i leave it off it still sounds a little sloppy. what do you advise?
I do not have quantize on...It must though, be synced externally. Perhaps view my other vids to see how to set up sync, but you will want to use note repeat along with external sync. That should work for you.
When using the old MPK in Logic the note repeat only stayed on time with the beat if you use it at the beginning of the project. So for instance if you had a hook where you wanted to use the note repeat function in the middle of the project, it would not be on time. you would have to back to the beginning of the project, and use note repeat cuz it only works from the 1 or the very start of the project. (Hope that makes sense to you.) Has that changed with the new version? I'm about to buy this real soon
I want to buy this also man. Just seen it in guitar center a few minutes ago and its very nice. Pads are smaller but feel better and the keys feel a lil better too. I need a keyboard to use with LPX but i need to know if that note repeat issue you stated is fixed.
Jack Spade how did it go? I heard the non keyboard version of this had that problem and has been pulled from manufacture and release! Really want note repeat but not if I can only start at bar one!!!
I tried it but when I press the note repeat button, no sound comes out when I press the pads or the keys. When I turn off the note repeat button the sound comes back. What should I do? I want to use this function to record my drum beats for a song
Hey Bob thank you for the video except I’m still having an issue. When I click on note repeat I can no longer hear the pads and the keys are not affected by the no repeat option. Why is it that when I hit no repeat I cannot hear the pads.
Odnez....Got your question. Go To FILE menu/Project Settings/Syncronization and select the MIDI tab. Change the Destination from ALL to MPK249 port A. Make sure Clock is selected, actually you can have Clock, MTC and MMC check marked. Hope That helps.
Diesel Beast Productions As far as I know you can not.....The MPK will only control one sound source at a time. You CAN use both features at the same time say if you looped a four bar phrase or even in real time. You could set up a keyboard split of some kind, or experiment with having the pads and the keyboards send on the SAME midi channel. BTW you can engage the latch feature on the arpeggiator. Hope that helps.
Parigos...Sounds a little odd...Make sure you use the FL Studio Preset on the MPK 249 (Preset 11). I would suggest restarting the FL Studio software and/or your computer....Obviously make sure u don't have a delay on the track in question. Check for a preference inside FL Studio to make sure there's not some arbitrary delay set. Lastly you might try reinitializing the MPK 249 to factory defaults and start fresh from there. Remember if you reset the MPK to factory defaults, you will lose any user presets you saved... How do I reset my MPK2 controller to Factory Default settings? The MPK2 series controller allows the user to reset either or both the factory Presets and the factory Global settings. To do so: Press Preset to enter Preset Mode. Press the Left Cursor button so Factory Settings appears in the display. Turn the Value Dial and select Presets or Globals depending on the settings you want to restore. akai mpk2 faq factory default To restore the MPK2 series controller to it's factory default Presets or Globals settings (which overwrite those previously saved), press the Value Dial. How is it that you have that set up w it beings a controller that you have to program. Whenever I push note repeat nothings plays whether time division is on or off
@@boblazo1 I looked up on google and several articles and even the akai manual says to do this but still no luck. Also tap tempo doesn't blink or do anything when I push note repeat

S.S the roCkr ...you can or could program the sound/patch that way. Not aware that you can split the keyboard into separate zones. You CAN set up the keyboard and pads to send on DIFFERENT midi channels. Hope that helps.
Found this: community.akaipro.com/akai_professional/topics/mpk249-multiple-midi-channels. Looks like it can be done to some degree...You can split the keyboard into two zones over two different channels. You can set whatever channel/port you like for each zone, and transpose each zone. Sadly you can NOT make the MPK echo a zone or control over several different channels at the same time internally (Though you can with 99.9% of the DAWs out there, and the few that can't, you can add bits of free software that will). Aftertouch can be disabled on the keyboard if desired.
Hi guys i'm on fl studio and when i use note repeat on mpk 249 it dont repeat in the same time its always one hi hats more per beats can someone help me i thinks its from the configuration or something thanks
I'm quite sure that you don't need to deactivate the time division button in order to deactivate the Note Repeat (hold). Also, you mention that you use Live with the controller, and i´m working on a template here. Can i see yours? :D
I´ve used the included template, and its far from complete. Also achieved Selected Device Control via User Configuration. What i mean is, the ableton Setup/template you start with for creating (on the ableton side)
Franco...you'll be looking to have Ableton receive MMC and or MTC. Look around in the preferences for Midi sync or synchronization. Hope this helps. I am primarily a Logic user.

Thanx Bob for all the great videos. Do you have any advice for use with other DAWs, ie. Garage Band/ Mixcraft? It shows rewire for Ableton Live.
