Frugal tip, instead of buying labels, find some busted up metal window blinds. Cut those up into labels…you’ll get a ton and they last forever.
Great idea! Thank you for it.
I bought them new for $6 and still have some after 3 years
The blinds are a great idea! I've also been cutting my plastic milk jugs into strips for labels, and it works perfectly.
@@rebeccaperry007 The milk jugs are good as they are made of food-safe plastic. The window blinds may not be the best choice if you are aiming for organic gardening. The cut plastic releases chemical particle -micro-plastics.
@@lynnforrest3384 personally, yes. I try my best not to use plastic whenever possible. Plastic milk bottles are my personal line in the sand, it’s cartons or glass* or I go to another store. I just can’t with that much plastic. The blinds I was referring to are the metal ones. *cheapest glass dispensers are the $3-4 deposit on glass milk bottles. I can get nerdy organized at times and I love putting all my fridge liquids in matching glass 1/2 gallon bottles: milk, juice, iced tea, etc. plus the milk bottles line up perfectly in the door (if you go through it fast enough to keep in the door). So dang nerd purdy. 😀
I used to buy a cheap plastic table cloth to cover my table. When I finished potting I just pick it up and empty on the lawn. Not much mess to clean. Work smarter not harder.
Fantastic idea! I usually use old flyers.
I do the same thing.
I do that too, but I have a tarp. It is stronger and I can use it for transporting things. Shower liners work too, they are thicker than plastic table cloths, unless you just want to use a disposable table cloth. The shower liner can be washed and bleached by hand if you get a heavy duty one. Some are machine washable on the delicate cycle but you need to check the label.
So right..especially on a table that has so many places where dirt can get stuck, and it's an outdoor dining table. So much easier and tidier to use a cover. It would make more economic sense to get a cheaper, flat top plastic table for work and keep this one for dining.
And put the table close to where you will be sweeping the soil to. Using plastic tablecloths help keep tables clean 😊.
Hi Becky. I see you water the plants and also put water into the tray. That is not the way to water. This way, they end up with their feet in water, and that's what plants don't like. You either water on top or a little water in the trays, not both. Always check after an hour if there is still water in the trays. If so, empty them. That should solve the overwatering problem.
Nice that you show your troubles. It is a constant learning for all of us. Appreciate you
I would check out the channel Gardening in Canada. She is a soil scientist and does a great job describing problems with soil media. People are confused about the boiling method. We WANT our seeds to germinate in a sterile medium, because studies show that it is more likely that bad bacteria/organisms can cause dampening off. However, once germination is accomplished, we no longer want a sterile medium. It is then we want to add fertilizer and then up pot. Seed starting mixes from the store are sterile for a reason. However, plants do need soil nutrients once they start taking off. I would guess you are overwatering…overwatering prevents nutrient uptake. It is like we are drowning the roots. You will get it figured out. And however you choose to grow in the future, it is your call to make. Thanks for sharing! I am so glad to hear your tomatoes revived! ❤
When you bottom water you need to come back and drain the excess water so the plants won’t be sitting in water for long.
I just want to apologize for a not real nice comment I made quite a while back. I admire you so much! You do so much. I don’t know how you do it. You deserve everything you get. I do notice you have tons and tons of energy and need control you put a lot on yourself. But your food looks so good and you learn so much. I wish I could do a fraction of what you do Of corse I am a lot older than you, I admire you and am proud of everything you’ve accomplished. ❤
Red solo cups are great for your tomato seedlings. Look up videos on using the double solo cup method. The roots will reach into the lower cup finding water, instead of wrapping around in bottom of planting cup.
Start saving plastic containers for up potting, reperposing yogurt containers for instance, just drill some drainage holes.
I wish i had your yard! Your home is so beautiful!
When I repot my tomato seedlings I just go to the dollar store and buy some plastic cups. Melt a hole in the bottom or drill a hole thru a whole stack at once. You can write on the cups and dispose of them after. I reuse them for a few seasons before I need to dispose of them.
Becky, you might want to get a cheap plastic table cloth to cover your table with, then you could just fold it up and shack out in the grass for easy clean-up.
FYI: people are having trouble with Black Cow compost. Homestead Heart lost their entire pepper and eggplant garden.
I just came to say the same thing! I just watched their video and feel so badly for them. 😞
yes, chances are that the compost is not fully cooked...
I came to post the same comment.
😬😬😬 I just bought a whole pallet… I am mixing it in with two large bags of garden soil before putting it in my beds. I hope that helps. So far I’ve not seen any issues… 🫣🫣🫣
I was reading the comments on homestead heart post. And some people said she mixed to many products together when planting those crops.I don't know how true that is because I don't watch their channel that often.I have purchased black kow and see no problems YET! I will be on the lookout. I don't have. I don't have a way to get a load of compost for my little garden. I swear it's all ways something. Ugh
I wonder if the seedlings struggled because of the boiling water killing some of the good stuff in the compost, that would make send on why the dahlias and petunias did better once they were up-potted.
That was my first thought, also.
@@beth4059 finished the video and she said that the tomatoes perked up also, sounds like that might be the culprit
I think this is exactly the issue.
I was thinking the same thing. I was going back to see what she changed this year and one of the changes was the boiling water. Yes, it does kill bacteria but the plants need the good bacteria to grow and it kills that. I would compare the plats that you use boiling water and the ones you did not. I am not sure if you have that comparison. Once you up-pot, the good bacteria is in the new soil. Just a thought.
I use cinnamon in the seed starter soil, it works perfect as antifungal
I had this issue after I disinfected the soil with hot water. For some reason this throws the soil off. All my plants germinated and many of the life seemed to be sucked out of them till they died. I feel like the boiling water makes the disease in the soil exacerbate. I had dahlias as well and they died eventually too
Yeah, "sterilizing" soil makes no sense, you kill the good with the bad.
The Boiling water does nothing to the soil but sterilized it and if you are feeding it ,it's added back so nothing is killed. Over watering washes out nutrients and weakens plants ,soil blocks are tiny . Containers are fed more often for this reason as the food is washed out . Over watering is something that happens and takes time to learn and fungus knats are no joke . The soil you buy is shipped in on pallets sitting outside for all the critters to find there way to and lay eggs waiting for the warmth of your home .
absolutly got that right, Use light potting mix and water with mosquito bits to keep them fungus gnat free
You have a great green thumb. When I first grew my tomatoes sprouts I used to water them from the top and they turned yellow I talk with a tomato grower and she said with sprouts you never want to water them from the top. She said to plant the seedlings in a small container place them in the bigger container that you carry with others and put water in that bigger container and let the sprouts in the small one soak up the water then dump the water out when the soil is good and damp. I hope that helps next year.
Becky, when I run out of trays,I drill 3 holes in the stack of red solo cups,I get them at dollar tree easy n cheap n work perfectly plus you get a deep plant with tomatos.
I was having the same issues with some tomatoes and pepper plants. Upon researching, I read somewhere that mentioned, even if you get the tomato seedlings to bounce back, you may have issues during the growing season. Your plants may be more prone to diseases/blossom end rot ext. I am not sure how true that is. Take it with a grain of salt... but you may want to think about planting a few store bought seedlings for back up.
I’ve had tomato plants that looked like that before. When I up potted I made sure the stem was in deeper. Then I pinched off the bad leaves and they can back beautifully.
Hello!!
Txorizero peppers are a very popular variety in the north of Spain, specifically in the Basque Country. We usually wait until they are completely red before harvesting, then we dry them. It is very common to see them hanging in the outside of traditional basque houses.
You can enjoy them throughout the growing season: fry them when they are still very small and tender, use them in stews when they are green but bigger and enjoy them red.
Txorizero pepper paste is used to make, like the name says, chorizos. But we also use them in many other traditional recipes.
That’s so interesting! I live in the US in an area where there are many Basque people. Our larger town even has a Basque museum and a Basque festival. Of course, we have Basque chorizos in restaurants around here.
@@cynthiafisher9907Wow I love to hear that!!! :) hope you really enjoy Basque culture, I wonder how the festival is in the US and I didn’t know there was a Basque museum, it makes me really happy to hear about it. Have a great dayyy
@@nereaetxebarriaegiluz1868 Yes, the Basque festival is called Jaialdi and is held every 5 years. The next one will be in late July/early August of 2025. There is also a yearly festival called San Inazio, the same time of year. We have the largest Basque population outside the Basque region of Europe. We have a Basque restaurant as well.
Galician here (Spain) and I was thinking that it sounded like chorizo (txorizo tx=ch) and most probably was something related to making them. So thank you so much for your knowledge and sharing it because I didn't know for sure.
Que bueno compartir conocimiento y que nuestra cultura llegue tan lejos! 😊
Thanks for sharing & teaching so sweetly! Gardening in Canada’s YT channel says to not bury tomatoes deeply because they send their food roots down; the other roots that form are only for stabilizing the plant. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
The tomato seedlngs look like they were over watered. Accounts for the yellowing and the dampening off. Your soil blocks may be too heavy. It would work better in plug trays with a lighter soil. The stems are purple and that is a phosphorus deficiency. There is also nitrogen deficiency all probably related to damage to the roots from over watering. Spots on the leaves probably bacterial spot. Some varieties are resistant. Again indicating too much humidity. 3 eggplants are plenty, they are very productive. They actually need about a 30 inch circle of space. They can be over wintered . In frost free climates they get about 5 ft tall and live about 8 years, but I replace them after three because production drops. It is a common ingredient in Asian cuisines. The yellow pepper seedling may still be salvageable. If they get in good soil, it does not take long to recover. They are heavy feeders. If it is warm enough don't up pot, just put them out. They grow slow on top but the roots are growing faster.
that's what I said on the previous video too
Great information!
I think with your persistence, your garden will be beautiful! Don’t get discouraged. I just threw away a couple of tomatoes plants away too.
As well, always water tomato plants at root level- it prevents all sorts of bacterial/fungal/mold problems of the leaves.
As well , the sun can cure many problems . If you can take those tomato plants outside in the sunshine- away from all other plants - the plants might be able to overcome whatever is affecting them. The sunshine can kill off some bacteria/mold/fungi. If the plant has good nuritious soil -it may recover. Nature is remarkably resilient!
Iam not an expert gardener and really this is the first year I have grown from seed. One of my mentors told me to start my tomatoes in large solo cups with holes in the bottom. I don't have much money so it was what I could afford right now. They also told me to layer the soil as it grows so it will establish more roots. I have done all that they have said and my tomatoe plants look so beautiful and strong. I did however make the mistake of starting them way to early and I have beautiful large plants that I should be planting out but my Ohio weather is not allowing it. I pray your up potting works. Love your channel. God bless
Very nice explanation of what you doing to organize and start your garden .😊
You are doing an amazing job Becky! Thank you for sharing 🤗
5 seconds before you said the hose, I was like the HOSE! LOL What I do is instead of the spray nozzle I choose the mist for seedlings. I learned last year.
I'm proud of you,Becky for trying to be more involved with labeling your plants. I know it caused you dome frustration last growing season.
Becky you are a good gardener. Thank you, great inspiration.
Eggplant is a great substitute for noodles in your lasagna and also perfect for freezer meals. I intentionally grow extra eggplants for this reason! White sauce, cheese, and pressure canned chicken is Sooo good!
Bottom watering helped me a lot with over watering. And disease leaves
I hope you can save them!!! Hello from Spain 🇪🇸 😊
My Mom has been planting tomatoes for years. She said too much water, and they will most likely be fine once up potted with a little nutrients added to the soil.
My tomato starts looked and sound very much like yours. When I uppotted them from 2" pots to 4" X 5" pots, I added worm castings to my potting mix. I pre-moisten my potting mix. I then lightly watered them and the next day I lightly fertilized them with 3-3-5 fertilizer. I also moved them outside under dappled sun for 3 days and then moved them into the direct sun. My nights are now in the low 50s and my days in law 70s. They are now beautiful, green and putting on new growth!
If you have extra plants and pots maybe from the nursery that are recyclable that you do not want to keep.... perhaps there is a community center that would take your extras for families who deal with food insecurity who would welcome growing their own veggies even if they only take one plant(for apartment dwellers, a container garden on the balcony can be a game changer for folks in need or a shut in elderly person who would love a tomato plant).😊❤
Something I learned this year with purple leaves… it could be too much light. I shortened the number of hours my lights were on each day and that helped tremendously.
Another thought with the tomatoes is the soil blocks are too small to handle multiple plants in each. Either thin or up-pot sooner.
Becky, I know you said space was an issue, but this year I planted all of my tomato seeds right into four inch pots. Tomatoes are my largest crop and I didn't want to have to up-pot them. I planted two seeds in each pot and used Vermont Compost. My tomato seedlings are INCREDIBLE. They are huge plants and the healthiest I've ever had. They had plenty of room and nutrients from the start, and wow, what a difference. If you can make the space next year, maybe you can go ahead and try it. Or maybe just start a few that way.
I think you are spot on about over-watering. I almost killed my 60 tomato seedlings. I was using the water wicking trays and the soil was constantly wet. They were yellow and dropping leaves. I up-potted them, let then dry out somewhat and within a few days they looked 100 times better. Within a couple of weeks they looked fantastic. They need to be planted out in the garden so bad but it is too cold. My average last frost date is May 15. Good luck.
Maybe next year you could start them earlier with Wall-O-Water cloches or another name is Cosy Coat.
Up potting in the pots will help. I grow indoors under grow lights, and Tomatoes and Peppers I will only start in starting trays. I love soil blocks, and they are great for some plants, but for nightshades, I found that with the amount of water, and time, ( they can take a while to germinate, some tomatoes and peppers have taken 20 to 30 days to germinate for me, even with heat mats.) to keep them wet to germinate the seeds, the nutrients in good soil gets washed out before the seedling actually needs it. Even in seed starting trays I learned to fertilize once a week with a liquid fertilizer once the plant has 2 to 4 true leaves, this is an absolute must if using soil blocks.
I make my own compost here at our ranch. That soil on the tomatoes is burning them. Nitrogen will kill seedlings very quickly.😢 the petunia being purple is phosphorus deficiency or high nitrogen. Keep going Becky. I know many are learning from your adventures!!!
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦 😊. You're doing very well Becky, a constant inspiration!!
Becky you just said what I was thinking ... your hose to much water . Yes
You can & should take the seed leaves off your peppers and plant them deeper than you are planting them. They can make roots all along their stem also(like tomatoes) (professional bedding plant grower from Minnesota) love your channel & that you love to learn new things!!!😊
Thanks! I didn’t know that.
Peppers do not do that, but tomatoes do. You should plant peppers soil level that are growing
I was just wondering the date when you were working here and you said it. Made me smile! 😊
22:58 oh my i can relate to getting a new outdoor table because of using our original for gardening!❤
Hi Becky so enjoy all your videos. We use Captain Jacks tomato fertilizer, tomatoes need calcium. Up pot them in 4 in pots & feed them. You can research this of course. By the way, I love your dad, he nurtures my soul. Good luck honey
I love your grow room videos.🌱 You will have a very productive garden and I'm already looking forward to the harvest videos. 🤗❣️
Agreed love the harvest videos
When I run out of those kind of pots I use the large red drink cups from dollar store works great for tomatoes and peppers any large plant
Hey Becky, you should use a blower to move your dirt outside. Much easier and less wear and tear on your joints.
I'm so glad you up date us with the voice over and that your plants are doing better. I thought my tomatoes were a loss as well from over watering and you have given me hope to repot them and hopefully they recover. I love that you are transpaernt because it is so helpful. You are such an inspiration to not stop trying even with speed bumps.
You will save them! Have faith! I have done the same thing this year. Peppers are like tomatoes, plant deeper for strength. I need to start some flowers! No more room inside. It was 30 the other night!
Favorite part of my day is when you upload ❤️❤️
Up pot and take out for real sun. I have a similar grow light system. Mine were doing the same thing and the potting soil had too much bark robbing them of nitrogen. Switched soil, up potted and they’re looking good. Still have 1 more flat to up pot and then the peppers. They definitely can be saved.
I actually soak the pumpkin and zucchini. I lay them on a paper towwl for couple days. Then plant directly in soil.
Becky I love your channel.
last year I missed out on great deal on the green stalks. I am hoping your channel will have another special for Mother’s Day.
Thank you for always sharing.
Hello, i sure wish i had your growing room! I could use my dining room, i live in an apartment and do not use the dining table very often. Would work great for my container garden! Thanks Becky, i hope things work out for you!
Have you thought to up-pot in newspaper pots? It would take many steps out of your process with cleaning, storing, and not having enough:). And, you can write what is in it, right on the pot!
great idea!
Hi Becky, watching you sweep after potting was very therapeutic, but it will change your life if you were able to buy a battery powered blower! My Mother brought hers over to my house and I literally use it everyday now.
I agree. My husband bought one for our front porch. We have two Golden’s and between dirt they track up and their hair it’s such a help.
Homestead Heart had a video this morning, they lost a whole lot of their transplants they put into the garden. They figured out it was the Black Kow. Look for browning of the stems at the soil. She lost peppers, tomatoes, and tomatillos if I recall correctly. All of those are nightshades. Other than your dahlias, did you have any other plants that weren't nightshades have problems?
Becky, you have really inspired me to up my gardening game over the last couple of years. Thanks for you positive attitude and sharing what you do.
you are doing an excellent job, you are on the ball. i truly hope your garden flourishes this year. yhanks for sharing
I agree it could be overwatering. I was overwatering some of my seedlings too. I let them dry out and that helped. I also think using cell trays with a separate tray for bottom watering is helpful. Any water left after 5 minutes or so I dump out so the roots aren’t sitting in it. I use half strength fertilizer once a week as well while the seedlings are young. Fingers crossed you can save your tomatoes!
Just need to make it make!!! You're doing an awesome job Becky.
Becky did you noticed a difference between the things you germinated with the boiled water compost and the compost without boiling water? Im trying to remember and maybe the tomatoes were the one with the boiled water batch? Just trying to help, not criticize. I love your videos and you are amazing: súper hard working, inventive and dedicated. You.inspired me to start a garden of my.own, next week i Will be planting my first garlic (im un southern hemisphere) .
GOOD EVENING BECKY HAPPY SUNDAY ALL MY TOMATOES 🍅 PLANTS FAILED BOUGHT PLANTS IN LIDL SO EXPENSIVE COMPARE GROWING YOUR OWN HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEKEND
MARGARET LYNCH SOUTHERN IRELAND ❤️
I got burnt our last year with growing my plants from seed to table. It is A LOT of work. This year we just bought plants and going to build a small greenhouse for next year. It is all a learning experience!
Becky, you need a battery operated leaf blower to keep your patio free of soil/sand/dirt and in my case toads that use our cement as their out house. Hubby got me one last fall and it has been a game changer! You could store it and the charger in your seed room 😜
I use Happy Frog to start all veggies because ofthe drainage needed. It has lots of perlite
I've had happy frog and ocean forest burn seedlings, it's really hot! Be careful starting in that.
This from a website: "It’s worth mentioning that while boiling water can sterilize the soil, it can also affect the nutrients in the soil. The “cooked” soil may be sterile but devoid of usable nutrients, so it’s important to consider the impact on the soil’s fertility before using this method."
I would say that the seedlings have been weakened from this process and then the excess water has added to their problems, and they haven't had the strength to stand up to both.
Great job Becky!
My tomatoes are on life support right now. I don't think they are going to make it so I went to the local nursery and bought my San Manzanos.
Hi Becky! Don’t underestimate how effective a good spray bottle is!
Last year you grew Five Chinese peppers. My nursery told me they are only Fall plants and only ornamental. Are they truly ornamental? I'm intrigued with them. The colors are beautiful!
I purchased Purple Beauty Peppers which are an Eggplant color but the flesh is Lime Green. They are a Mild/ Sweet pepper along with my Chocolate Candy Striped pepper. I'm fascinated with them!
A few things I’ve learned with tomatoes,
I start seeds in solo cups with holes popped into the bottom
Water the soil before planting the seed, then only water the tray when dry (a few inches)
Only up-pot if absolutely necessary (a really cold spring)
Start fertilizer at 25% strength after true leaves appear, then slowly increase
Set plants outside to acclimate for 1 hour a day slowly increasing time
Transplant into garden when nighttime temps allow
I dig a hole and plant the entire block of soil keeping roots undisturbed as much as possible
I love watching your videos! Keep up the great work!❤
My tomatoes and peppers look the same as yours, and I am pretty sure I also overwatered mine. I hope and pray that they can be rescued for both of us!
Sometimes letting them dry out helps if you're sure that it's over watering causing the problem. If it's really bad you may be able to save the plant by replanting into dry soil.
As for trays...I go to Goodwill and
buy cookie sheets and cafeteria trays to use in the greenhouse
Thanks for sharing.
My tomatoes were like that last year and they kept growing but would lose their lower leaves. They looked pathetic when I planted them out and buried a lot of the stem since there were no leaves anyway. They bounced and grew amazingly in the garden, I am having similar issue this year but I think they will be fine this year too.
It’s funny how foods that are staples to some, some have never tried! Eggplants were something we always ate. My Italian grandma made eggplant Parmesan on special occasions as well as grilled eggplant in summer and roasted eggplant in winter. Just adding a little olive oil and garlic on a roasted eggplant makes a great topper for crusty Italian bread! We also had a Greek style eggplant dip for holidays, it was similar to Baba Ganush
So excited to see your Greenstalks! I have several of those vertical planters. Your channel is so motivating! Thanks for sharing your endeavors in everything 😊
I love and appreciate the little pictures in the corner of the verify you are up potting.
I think they are save able. Good luck. I hope your having a great weekend. Blessings
Yay! Extra videos from Becky!
I lost all my tomatillos last year, but all the volunteers were more than enough.
P.S. your new garden is totally amazing!
perfect timing! i’m taking a break from prepping the garden and becky posts. happy sunday!
2 things Becky. 1. there have been a lot of people having problems with black cow selling unfinished Manure. 2. You mixed hot water in your soil that you germinated your seeds in.
Video Source - Homestead Hart, & others ❤
I just watched a video and the family used Black Kow that smelled like ammonia.
Please check your Black Kow. I just watched a channel and they posted all of their crops. It smelled like ammonia.
Correction…. Their crop was lost because of the manure had not fully composted.
Yes! I heard about the black kow not being fully composted
@@pamelacook4080In case you were not aware .. you can tap on the 3 dots next to your comment and select "edit" if you didn't want to make them all separate posts.
Becky everything is going to be ok you got thisgirl
I think you are correct at thinking the water sprayer is the culprit. A lot more water comes out of those than you think. I got myself a hand held sprayer and it works so much better and I don’t drown my seedlings. I think once you up pot them, they will be fine. Happy gardening
I’ve tried growing in soil blocks made with 100% Fort Vee compost (sifted) and it didn’t work well for me. This year I went back to using Happy Frog in the 6 cells and a soil mix of compost and peat moss for soil blocks. Has been a much better seed starting year.
The hose was a new addition to make life easier and it did you will learn I have faith.
I started everything in 4 inch pots in the greenhouse. I put one seed in each corner to save space under the lights. It worked great and now all plants are in my garden growing well. I’m in north Georgia so it’s warmer here.
If your ever feeling experimental, if you cut the tops off the top of you pepper plants you will get a bushier plant vs a tall one. I did this last year and i got more peppers by doing this. I'm not sure if cutting the tops off had anything to do with it, but i was happy with the outcome.
I gave been gardening and starting seeds for over 50 yearx. I use potting soil to start my seeds. I have never poured boiling water on my potting mix. A local nursery where alot if us high school kids worked pitted seeds and they never stetiluzed their soil. I think the boiling water may have changed your soil
Judt a suggestion..but I make the same kind of mess with the Potting soil..an electric blower now saves soo much time and energy!!🙂
Thank you for sharing your struggles! I think seeing you just spray water with your hose may be part of it. Try just bottom watering and keep the foliage dry. Best of luck. I winter sow my tomatoes and they’re pretty tiny when I plant. They grow just fine and produce like crazy!
You need a little battery operated blower to clean off your potting area and patio. Makes the job fast and easy😊
Oh, eggplant is wonderful, so good. Try an egg plant parmesan. Delicious!
May God give you all peace
homestead heart used black kow compost and it turned out to be pure ammonia. Be careful with that stuff!
Becky uses Fort Vee Vermont compost!
That last "rainbow" tomato just got cast aside amongst the potting soil. Maybe you didn't see it. Sorry, was sad for me. We always planted the volunteers from our direct compost area, everyone! My folks grew up during the depression and the motto was, "waste not, want not". Think about setting the seedling on maybe a plate surface so you don't accidentally lose more plants. Just a thought. 😊❤
