"Willpower" and "moderation" are suggestions made by people who aren't addicted to food - they just don't get it.

there is no moderation with modern processed foods, they are too addictive. You have taken control of your nutrition, good on you. Love your videos, you will prove the sceptics and the ignorants wrong.

So agree. I have people tell me that all the time. Just buy a bag of Hershey's kisses and have one a day. If I could have one kiss a day, I would not be obese. I am so compulsive, addicted, to food that I would eat the entire bag the first day. Moderation doe not work in addiction. Well said, my friend. Good on you.

One reason I believe people love to use the word "moderation" in regards to their diet is to validate the fact that they just want to eat everything they like without regard to the ethical or physical consequences. Congrats on your progress to date and to all the media frenzy you have created about potatoes! I

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 7 місяців тому

I don't think the ethical consequences are necessarily a part of this, if it's animal rights you're referring to. There are plenty of vegans who don't have squeaky clean diets, or even call themselves junk food vegans. There is so much vegan junk food available these days.
I think the moderation argument is mostly brought up by people who could have a package of cookies (biscuits) and a bar of chocolate in their cupboard, and even a pint of ice cream in their freezer that they simply forget about if they don't open the cupboard and the freezer. They buy a value/family pack of chips (crisps), take out a handful, put it in a bowl, are satisfied and happy (and don't feel the urge/need to eat more), and the chips in the bag go stale before they can finish the bag.
1; these people are not addicts and 2; they don't eat junk food often so it doesn't affect them as severely as it does people who may also not be addicts but who eat a lot of junk because it's easy or they were brought up like that.
To them junk is only unhealthy in theory because they're not affected by it since they don't eat it often. My brother asked me why I didn't have any cookies in the house to have with tea when he visited unannounced. I told him that if I don't buy it I can't be tempted by it. He told "just buy it and just don't be a pig". They don't get it.

Yea I can't do moderation with food either. I get a dozen donuts thinking I'll just eat one a day, that wouldn't be too bad. Five minutes later all 12 donuts are inside my belly.

This is spot on. I followed a starch solution diet for two years. A few lapses in what I ate and suddenly I had gone a year without a good diet and was back to being fat and sick. I imagine the 'moderation' argument is either to try and persuade some to eat a little better than usual, and also to make people feel comfortable about their eating habits - despite the fact they eat what we would consider a poor diet!

Exactly! I came to this conclusion a few weeks ago and have been doing something very similar to your plan (but have other vegetables as well with potato as my main calorie source). I was so excited to find other people online doing this to too.
My idea was to simplify my diet so that it was easy to control and I came to potatoes as a way to do that. Love your insights.

Am so sick of people being down on spuds and starch too, like they are the main cause of over weight. All the best with your journey.

People do not understand how serious Food Addiction is. Drug, Alcohol, gambling addictions, just stopping cold turkey works. However, Food Addiction is like putting a lion in a cage and lock um up, and take it out for walk 3 times a day!!!! Those who does not understand this should not make silly commons. I am proud of you. Stay strong one day at a time. God bless you.

Man, I dig 'ya. You are such an inspiration for many of us. You give me hope I can beat this bugger. Support is so important....and your videos supply that audible support I can listen to over & over again. Funny how everyone thinks it's a weight loss 'bit', but when you say 'addictions', it's like they short-circuit & don't know how to respond.
I would love to see Dr. Doug Lisle accompany you w/ these interviews...maybe later on w/ in-depth interviews instead of the short-60second interview. Once this plays out, I could see you being an important part of the McDougall family. Well, I think we (McDougallers) are all family in a way! Hee.

Moderation is total bull! That's like the willpower bull. The only way to change the way your brain thinks about certain foods, is to stay away from them. Processed white flour and processed white sugar are the two most addictive drugs. Love this video!

Jillette acknowledges that his approach is probably not the most sensible way to lose weight. But it worked for him, he says, because he doesn’t like making small changes.“I’ve never in any way respected moderation. I don’t like it,” he says. “Once you go really, really intense and not like a grown-up, things get really fun. …You’re playing in the Sex Pistols, you’re not playing in the Eagles.”

I applaud you for this fantastic video. You said it spot on. I also have made the connection to moderation not being good for someone who is addicted to food. And have also been making the comment about you would not let an alcoholic drink just once in a while. In the past "extreme" diets had worked for me, however just about for 6 month or so, and the weight has always come back on. I do love your comparison about experts who do not live in moderation with what they excel in. I will have to use that. One other connection I have been making in the past year or two so is in regards to why people over eat. I truly believe the culprit being processed foods. They add a ton of chemical to either flavor enhance and/or to make you addictive. Have you noticed that some foods you can just not stop eating after you start? It is very rarely with whole foods. Only processed foods. So when you eat a whole food diet, as you are doing right now, you will have the chance to clear out build up junk from your body. Looking forward to your next video.

I have ruined my weight loss success by eating just that one brownie (chocolate cake), because I caved into temptation at the coffee shop near my office. That one brownie at a coffee break turned into a daily habit, which was an extra empty 400 or 500 calories, and caused me to regain the 20lbs I fought so hard to lose. I can't believe these nutrition "experts" know do little about human nature. Processed foods are highly addictive because our bodies are not designed to consume them. We are designed to consume whole foods, without added sugar salt, and oil.

    livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/lcc-episode-175-kerry-patrone-and-danielle-eaton-explain-weight-loss-struggles-eating-low-carb/25941

I just heard that from someone else a few minutes ago. Crazy that I'm being discussed on a low carb show! I just wrote to him actually to say I'd come on the show if he was interested... I'm not going to listen to this episode though, pretty sure I can guess what they'll say ;-)

Spud Fit They start talking about you at the 31 minute mark. It's comical! (Hint: there's talk of "bacon".)

+Spud Fit pretty much what I would've expected. Hilarious how people love to comment without knowing what they're talking about!

Spud Fit They have fixed, single-minded ideas, so you know they're going to demonize the carbs, and praise the bacon. They blame Ancel Keys for getting fat.

It's so strange the experts were more worried about you eating potatoes than they were about your previous diet. How much protein, iron, vit c and fibre is in processed food? But they were worried about potatoes.

    Hi Andrew
Are you taking any supplements? being on a plant based diet it is recommend to take B12 as it is the only vitamin that we can't get from plants. I use a spray it really easy to take. Maybe you should look into it! Love your work!!!
    Regards
    Natalie

Congratulation on your weight loss! Can I ask if you snore? And has the weight loss reduced the snoring if you did? Im at my heaviest and have really been suffering with snoring recently.

+Paul Edwards I sometimes snore but hardly ever so I'm sorry I can't really tell you if this might help. Good luck.

Moderation is fine for some, but for people who are moderate in what they do its not a thing they are doing its a natural personality trait based on their genetic make up. My wife is totally good at moderation, she has one glass of wine, a plate of rich food, doesn't gamble or have any real vices. Me I'm like what's the point of 1glass of wine, if I eat lasagne I'll eat the whole tray with garlic bread, i just can't do moderation because of my dopamine response. It's too intense when I eat food it's no different to when I sniffed coke, a huge rush of pleasure followed by negative consequences. The key to Andrews message in all of these videos isn't to eat potatoes, it's the recognition and acceptance of being an addict. I truly believe its no different at all to coke, booze, gambling, sex etc they all just press the pleasure button at the detriment to the person. I'm starting this today and I'm positive about it. I've quit drinking, drugs including caffeine and medication in the past, no this is my last vice. I know it can be done because I know from quitting everything else it's just a neurological program, the thought patterns, the cravings they are all just programmed response from practicing eating. They will continue and will lag behind due to the neurological pathways that will fire in the brain. But neuroplasticity will work over a few weeks and produce me a brain that will no longer continue to ask constantly for the food, just like it stopped asking for coke, booze, cigarettes and coffee. I know for a fact it will stop asking if I persist. But like any addict those neurological pathways become doormant, but they dont erase. They are there waiting they only need one or two shots and they will be fine and punishing you again. Even thoughts can begin to ignite them in the early days of quitting. Like an old truck in a barn for yrs a fresh battery an fuel and it can fire up like its never been off the road. The neurological pathways are still there even if they are leaving you alone so never fire them up, don't wake the beast. My mind after yrs clean from coke and cigarettes rarely asks for them now even at party's I can be around coke and not take any, Im still tempted by the knowledge of the feeling but I'm not compelled to do it. The brain will change. Drugs and booze etc really are Pandoras box. Food is possibly the hardest because you have to keep eating and I will still be cooking nice meals for my wife and kids so I'll be sat over a bubbling tray of lasagne, imagine quitting booze then having to continue working behind the bar! It doesn't worry me though as I know from quitting other things the brain will change, that saliva response will die down the thought process of requesting food will slow like a dog that gets tired of begging when it never gets fed.
