If someone asked for a sketch that summarized Fred Armisen as a writer/performer, it would have to be this. He absolutely adores characters who don't realise they are making others feel awkward, and he loves stretching a clichée to the breaking point.
Fun fact about this: it’s almost certainly based on these inescapable ads in NYC for a long-running one-man show off-off-Broadway. The show was called “My Mother’s Jewish, My Father’s Italian and I’m in Therapy.” I think there was even a billboard advertisement for it on one of the highways leading into Manhattan.
Yeah, when I lived in NYC there always seemed to be one of these "My dad's Italian, my mom's Jewish, mamma mia oy vey!" deals going on at small theaters.
In the 20 years I lived in NYC, I used to see flyers and posters for these sorts of shows, and they're all very much along the lines of "My Mom's Italian, My Dad's Jewish, Mamma Mia Oy Vey!"
This is one of my all-time favorites. I've always wondered if Fred's one man show skit was inspired by or related in anyway to John Leguizamos god awful one man show.
I can relate to this. I have performed on stages as bleak as this, with audience members going back and forth to the crapper. I have also been a suffering audience member in a bleak theater, watching someone die onstage. This is one of Armisen's best bits.
The real life analogue for this was Andy Kaufman reading the entirety of The Great Gatsby on stage until there was only one person left in the audience.
So I’m pretty sure this sketch is in part a spoof on a real one-man show called My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy! ua-cam.com/video/9MNl_34o0VQ/v-deo.html Haven’t seen anyone point this out
This has got to be one of the most underrated SNL sketches from this era. So fucking funny

"Characters who don't realize they're making others feel awkward" is the perfect description for Fred's characters! Lol. Portlandia is full of them.
I think Seth wrote it
Also clear he has no respect for this kind of self-important monologue based proto-art of neurotic theater. He apes it often
@@baraksteady1341 🙄
Omg you nailed it.

2020 here, I think I can speak for most in that we ALL need to see the four hour version of this!
2021 and I say damn straight to this comment
2023, still yes.
I'd totally watch Fred do this kind of thing.
Knowing him I wouldn’t be surprised if he did it at some random theater for one night only
I’d watch him do that bit where he reads the headlines and then “talks” but says nothing after each one.
came here cause will arnett said to in the smartless podcast with fred aminsen :D
same
Saaaaaaame!!
Same!
Same here hahahaha
Same 😂

"No, Tommy! I'm-a gonn-a die!" 😂
Lol
🤣 “There’s no paper”. Thanks for always making my laugh so hard Fred!
Bobby said that
And Seth Meyers wrote it.
Is it because I was bad grandma? Is it because I was bad? LOL
lol "can I see the text?" :D
This made me laugh out loud so many times, Fred Armisen is hilarious 😊
This is one of the funniest SNL skits of all time
This is one of my all-time favorites. I've always wondered if Fred's one man show skit was inspired by or related in anyway to John Leguizamos god awful one man show.
I didn’t know John Leguizamo had a one man show. Oh god.
I would watch it. The whole 4 hours.
You can't dismiss the amount of critics he managed to attract to opening night though...
"In a show that can only be described as four hours."
"The whole thing just stressed me out from beginning to end"
bill about to crack the whole time
This hidden gem needs more views
Here from Smartless podcast
2:04 There is no paper :D
he is so underrated. funny guy!
@fred amisen dude mabye learn to write the name right if you are going to impersonate someone?
Here on Will Arnett's rec. lol! he was totally right. Absolutely great bit by Fred.
Brilliant...

This sketch is perfect
Now I want to do a one man show!
it'd be like this minus the ironic wit
I’m a simple man, I see Fred armisen I click.

Came here after the Smartless episode and Will's plug at the end 🤣 but I remember this from when I saw it live!!
I think I saw this video through snl app more than 10 times lol
"Can I see the text?" 🤣🤣🤣
Fred is amazing.
Will Arnett (during the Smartless podcast) sent me here!!!
Here from Smartless!
Is it because I was bad?
Is it because I was bad?
Why does this have less than 3k likes… it’s perfect
"No, Tommy. I'm-a gonna die."
I would watch it :D
2:04 theres no paper
So good
The real life analogue for this was Andy Kaufman reading the entirety of The Great Gatsby on stage until there was only one person left in the audience.
I'd go to this
dude he is so funny
Wish it was 4 hours
Was totally surprised when Fred told me Seth Meyer wrote this whole thing 😂
This is John Leguizamo... Right??
2:09 lol
Wait his name is palmese and his mother is the Italian one? 🤔
my theory is Venessa Bayer was Chriti Brinkley
Dude, Christie Brinkley is a supermodel who was famously married to Jewish musician Billy Joel.
1:24 Is that the dancing pink woman from High Maintenance?
So I’m pretty sure this sketch is in part a spoof on a real one-man show called My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy!

Haven’t seen anyone point this out
Who else came here from SmartLess?
Already have my tix!!
Why the fuck is the view count so low...? ????
Fred Armisen is underrated af. People are stupid.

This sketch is basically BEAU IS AFRAID except funny.
2:34 drunk uncle?
Is it because I was bad
I'd love/hate to see it.
Always feel like they are making fun of John leguizamo. Maybe that's the only one man show type thing I've ever seen.
neurotic )))
Came here cuz Sidley Twins said it reminded them of Megan Markle giving a speech .... spot on!
Should we know who the Sidley Twins are? Or are they just another pile of irrelevance?
is it me or is that comedian zoltan kaszas sitting there in the front row
nested comedy ;)
🤣🤣🤣
fred armisen is fucking hilarious
HE IS!!!
😂
Armisen also did a one man show for an opening monologue: ua-cam.com/video/US7hym404bQ/v-deo.html
I’m here because
I heard this is how Meg Markle acts - pathetic!
CRINGE!
snl ---- still no laughs
What, the skit, or the live audience? Because the skit is hilarious.
