The thing I love about Fred is that he puts the right amount of sincerity & sarcasm into his characters. It's a perfect blend: not too flippant, not over the top, and never rushed/disingenuous.
7:24 That well-timed clap tho Fred sure knows how to control his comedic timing well I bet also being a drummer helps in someway I don't know if the two things are related but Fred is awesome!
+Michael Torrez Could be that the drummer was looking at his hands for the signal to start. But even if so, he knew the tempo at which to clap, which could be thanks to him being a drummer.
Underrated? He was on the show for 11 years. I don't think that would make someone "underrated". Hell, he had a lot of airtime on the show even after he left, much more than Season 39's featured players.
@@jessenathan9346 i agree but I also think that some people put him in the Bobby Moynihan category for that reason who I always thought was consistent but consistently just ok. But if you give Armisen the freedom to do what he wants he can spin some gold, and that wasnt always apparent in his time on SNL
The phone call bit is my favorite. I come back to this just to hear "or could be the wrong number" the timing in this is amazing because that's what makes it funny. Love it so much.
Fred and Kyle Mooney are the kings of VERY PRECISE awkward cringe comedy that's played completely "straight". References and riffs on very specific things but done very earnestly.
I love Kyle, but Fred is incomparable. Fred is the lynchpin of so many legendary skits, and while Kyle is funny, he never hit his stride like Fred did.
easily one of the best SNL monologues of all time--sincere, poignant, funny. "i'm gonna miss this place.." brought tears to my eyes. good or bad, we've all had those "is this a dream?" moments.
That is one of the best opening monologues I have ever been a part of. I have a one man show right now...off off off ...make a left than a right Broadway. I cried at the ending and laughed at the same time. I am floating right now as I type this. Fred, there is an opening at the Pizza Parlor - I know this, because I just quit.
this is so refreshing & distant compared to the other opening monologues and i absolute LOVE it!! Fred Armisen is incredible - so talented & funny! i love him !
I went to see him perform in Washington DC in 2011. This was after he had started filming Portlandia but before it aired. He ended up showing like 4 sketches from the first season to us. Some of the crowd was annoyed that he spent part of the show just showing us stuff, but little did any of them know that they were getting a sneak peak of what would become a massive hit show.
This is the best SNL monologue I have ever seen! Fred has a great gift for lampooning pretentious artistry. It's very good! I wish he'd had a stronger finish, but whatever.
Fred knows how craft his comedic timing based on unknowable audience reaction so well. He knows how to wait for his moment which takes a lot of confidence.
This was like. So subtly intricately awesome in so many ways I haven't even began to process yet. It's like, wow throughout. And then like, how was that so good? Also it was very funny throughout. We're prouda you, Funny Fred.
I keep returning to this, my feet dont even touch the ground. Y’know pa was always asking me to comment this. Love that Lorne sounds like Brian Doyle Murray lol
He's a genius on so many levels. Fred is maybe the most talented, and certainly the most intelligent entertainer of his generation. As far as range goes, he's gonna be tough to surpass. His Stand Up for Drummers special on Netflix is incredibly impressive. It seems like he can A+ anything from spit takes to mockumentary, so he might be in the top 50 best of all time and he seems to just be hitting his stride.
When the play at the local theater is so low budget, and the scenes really should be filmed than done live, and it becomes the stuff of genius anyway...😂😂😂. This man makes me spit out my popcorn, everytime!!!
@fred amisen I find it hard to believe that this is really Fred Amisen responding to my comment. But just in case . . . I will repeat that I've always admired your very diverse talents. How fortunate you are! How lucky for us!
@fred amisen Really? Who's going to "win some gift"? I've been a fan for over 25 years. Especially loved Portlandia. I'm originally from Ohio, but now live in California.
For all those who have bombed on that opening monologue stage take notice. That’s how you kill it. Owned it. And we all laughed very hard. Best monologue intro. Well...a good top 5, 15 or 20 anyways. Fred the master of live comedy.
The thing I love about Fred is that he puts the right amount of sincerity & sarcasm into his characters. It's a perfect blend: not too flippant, not over the top, and never rushed/disingenuous.
And never mean-spirited, rarely vulgar. More silliness in comedy!!!
Perfect blend is right, this is Tony level
I think this is probably one of the best opening monologues of all time
agree, Fred has great sense of comedy
And you've seen, how many? Five?
If you think that was funny then you need to see the Elton John one.
i think this is probably one of the worst comments of all time. the mono was OK, but nothing spectacular. IMHO
@@jk47now i think this is a pretty funny comment reply
"I take the train home, the wheels didn't even touch the tracks" i am deceased
R.I.P. mellow chameleon
it was a train wreck
Its such a profoundly weird joke i love it
That bit fucking sent me
uwu im super dumb can u plsss explain it to me lol i wana....kno...
this is the most perfect example of terrible one-man theater in the best way possible
It really is.
His mind works differently from us. I respect that. He's parodying so many different kinds of comedy at once here and it just works.
What’s so great about this is that he wrote this just for SNL and it’s so solidly good.
Best monologue of all time, there was layers of jokes beneath the jokes. His performances are some of the most nuanced SNL has ever casted.
His timing is everything, and this really is the best monologue of all time.
7:24 That well-timed clap tho
Fred sure knows how to control his comedic timing well
I bet also being a drummer helps in someway
I don't know if the two things are related but Fred is awesome!
+Michael Torrez Could be that the drummer was looking at his hands for the signal to start. But even if so, he knew the tempo at which to clap, which could be thanks to him being a drummer.
ya that was kinda cool
Fred is a good drummer. ua-cam.com/video/beqQNE8mWi4/v-deo.htmlm45s
That was a haiku!
Woah. Good catch.
This has been the funniest, most original monologue in a long time! I love it.
Yah, it's like he actually took a risk to do something interesting. +1
There's really no risk anymore... snl has sucked for a while now. It's only the good hosts like Fred that make it better.
Fred Armisen is hella underated.
Ur mom is underrated
By who.. you?
Underrated? lol this dude is comedy royalty
that was hilarious. I was laughing so hard my body floated off the ground
my body didn't even touch the ground
I was driving home while listening to this monologue…my wheels didn’t even touch the ground.
The phone call bit is my favorite. I come back to this just to hear "or could be the wrong number" the timing in this is amazing because that's what makes it funny. Love it so much.
"you know the funny thing about a phone call is, you never know who's going to answer it" killed me
'You're ruining it.' Genius.
He stole that bit from Mr. Show but it's still funny and well executed.
Joke thief
Can I use this chair?
@@babababad Maybe a tribute to Bob Odenkirk as Fred credits him to be one of the folks who helped him. It'd be touching if that's the case.
I could watch an hour of this
Have you seen his Tommy Palmese sketch (Half Jewish, Half Italian, Completely Neurotic!)? I'd watch a whole show of it.
Fred Armisen flew under the radar for years but he is one funny dude. I absolutely loved this piece. Very clever monologue.
I completely completely lost it at the "is this a dream?" part
I love seeing the audience member realize the bit and that there is no graceful role for her in it 🤣
"I'm just gonna change my jacket" *changes in to the exact same jacket* love it 😂
...thats the joke
@@pashadyne good point lol
One of the hillary clinton sketches did it too
My favorite part
I could really actually watch 2 hours and 40 mins of this
IKR?????!!!
"Love from New York I did Saturday's right" amazing
One of the best monologues I've ever seen, that was amazing
Fred "and not just that its the last one ever!"
Lady in audience "WHAT!"
Amazing monologue Fred's the best
One of my all time favorites. Very underrated
Fred and Kyle Mooney are the kings of VERY PRECISE awkward cringe comedy that's played completely "straight". References and riffs on very specific things but done very earnestly.
well put. It's that incredibly committed dead pan
How dare you compare Fred to Kyle
I like Kyle but Fred is a diff level
I love Kyle, but Fred is incomparable. Fred is the lynchpin of so many legendary skits, and while Kyle is funny, he never hit his stride like Fred did.
Kyle Mooney sucks
This is amazing. I always thought one man shows were absurd. Won't be able to see another one again without laughing.
+mikecantreed That's ridiculous. Joe Morton as Dick Gregory is amazing.
Finally a funny monologue. Fred is the best of the best.
that might be the greatest opening snl monologue of all time. Definitely top 10.
Best opening monologue ever. And one of the best SNLs I've seen in a long time. Hope Fred Hosts again. Or maybe co-hosts with Carrie Brownstein! :)
that would be worth watching
damn thats a good idea
I'm looking forward to seeing Bill Hader host again 😉
pure shite & on top of that ain't funny
He does have the talent.
He’s so perfectly awkward. His comedic timing is amazing. Most underrated comedian
OMG Fred is one of my favorite in SNL...
same
............Fred is definitely funny. But, somebody has to write him some funny shit to say or he'll end up with this garbage.
Or, you're just a freakin idiot whose main source of comedy is Benny Hill.
This monologue was exceptionally brilliant.
That was pure genious. I kept waiting on another feet not touching the ground joke and he got me with the train!
Of all the SNL monologues on UA-cam, this is the one I re watch the most!! Really makes me feel like I'm at a Broadway play
WOW that was such an incredible monologue. So deep and funny !you sir are a national treasure.
Your mom is a national treasure.
oHHHHHH get wrecked
easily one of the best SNL monologues of all time--sincere, poignant, funny. "i'm gonna miss this place.." brought tears to my eyes. good or bad, we've all had those "is this a dream?" moments.
“You’re not supposed to answer..... you’re ruining it”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of the best monologues in a while
Amazingly fun. Reminded me of the comedy experiments that SNL teased with when it started. That was good.
I love Fred. His humor is subtle and understated.
Fred Armisen is a legend
That is one of the best opening monologues I have ever been a part of. I have a one man show right now...off off off ...make a left than a right Broadway. I cried at the ending and laughed at the same time. I am floating right now as I type this. Fred, there is an opening at the Pizza Parlor - I know this, because I just quit.
Nick, brilliant commentary! And I wholeheartedly agree...
this is so refreshing & distant compared to the other opening monologues and i absolute LOVE it!! Fred Armisen is incredible - so talented & funny! i love him !
He's a genius. Period. Don't know many such comic actors left. I'm sold. The level of sophistication is just beyond.
I am obsessed with fred armisen 😂 his style of comedy is just gold
This is the best SNL monologue I have ever seen! Fred has a great gift for lampooning pretentious artistry. It's very good! I wish he'd had a stronger finish, but whatever.
A true classic definition of a monologue. It's very hard to pull this off. Fred is a comedic genius
Fred knows how craft his comedic timing based on unknowable audience reaction so well. He knows how to wait for his moment which takes a lot of confidence.
You can tell it's something good when it makes you laugh and cry at the same time!!!
DEVIN! WHOOAAT ARE UUUUU DOOOING HEERE?

He is so brilliant. Huge inspiration.
This is my favorite character of his. It’s so brilliant in so many ways😂
Fred is the best thing that ever happened to SNL.
So good dude, will always be one of my favorites. His work on portlandia is his prime absolutely and thats saying something.
And the description it has the name of this one man show and I lost it again upon reading it! Genius comedy!
This was SO Fred...I just love how much free-reign he got here. Incredible :-)
That was not just bizarre, but also extremely funny!! I love him! Such a clever talent, and seems effortless for him.
Just when I think Fred’s genius couldn’t possibly go any deeper, he throws “the wheels didn’t even touch the track” at me....
This was like. So subtly intricately awesome in so many ways I haven't even began to process yet. It's like, wow throughout. And then like, how was that so good? Also it was very funny throughout. We're prouda you, Funny Fred.
please this can't be the last show :*( ...you guys helped me so much through the years, thank you so much ♡
Fred Armisen is a National Treasure.
This was great, Fred! Hilarious yet strangely touching, I loved it!
I love Fred!!!! He is just hilarious and so cute!!!
This man has the best delivery of them all! amazing :)
"I take the train home, the wheels didn't even touch the track."

Pure genius, great theater.
I love how soft and warm his voice is.
Best snl intro ever. Very Deep.
I love Fred so much!
King of awkward comedy!

I thought Bill Hader was great but man, Fred Armisen is a talented man! (all of the members of SNL rock!)
When the play at the local theater is so low budget, and the scenes really should be filmed than done live, and it becomes the stuff of genius anyway...😂😂😂. This man makes me spit out my popcorn, everytime!!!
This is hilarious! I laughed so hard at this, I swear, my feet didn’t even touch the ground!

I would totally watch this one man show.
"Is this a dream?" = "Can I use this chair?" from Mr. Show.
one of the best fred armisen impressions ever!!
A master class on breaking the mold of what is comedy. Bravo.
I WILL always love Fred Armisen
Beautifully done, on so many levels.

This is so good. Fred Armisen is brilliant.
That was incredible, my favourite opening monologue I've seen yet
This monologue is just such comedic perfection
This is the best piece of theatre I have ever witnessed
The way his transitions are one beat too quick gets me every time
he is so well studied; his impressions and parodies are genius. I love everything he's in!
Best thing Fred has ever done. Molto Bene
The most real and intelligent comedian ever. Thank you Fred.

Every joke hit. Fred Armisen is one of the greatest.
Good job, sincerity ala "one man armi", new respect and appreciation.
Fred said on Fly on Wall podcast that Seth wrote this entire monologue. Brilliant x 2!
This is without a doubt the best monologue in SNL history. By far
Perfect! I love Fred's "one man show" plays. Reminiscent of the old SCTV sketches. I feel sorry for those who "don't get it".
Absolutely brilliant performance. Fred Armisen is a masterful comedian actor who deserves the lead in full featured comedy films.
That was the greatest thing I've ever seen
Lol that audience part reminds me of that old Mr. Show sketch with the chair
The Audition. So stolen
mbolduc at least they're stealing from one of the best sketches of all time. If you're gonna steal, aim high at least!
I was literally about to comment the same thing, but checked to see if anyone else noticed ;) i can't tell if it's an homage or theft.
