Sam Carter can deliver the melodies. And they're blended with open, free, yet relaxed screaming! Find out how get the screams and the range Sam Carter implements without hurting your voice. The keys? A full understanding of your head voice, a well-supported mixed approach and lots of introspection done with your VOCAL BREAK! I'll show you, unpacking Architects' studio recordings as examples, exactly how to get these sounds!
I haven't watched the video but there better be a "BLEGH" in there
Nice haha. Wish I could scream similar to Sam or just fry in general. I just can seem to create dirt the correct way. This sort of practice doesn't mesh well with old, poorly isolated apartment buildings :)
Hahaha it’s a staple
LM M'fn AO!!!
Haha. Oops:) will have to add it to “part 2”
@@chrisliepe YES PART 2
Now... how do I practice this without my neighbors thinking I'm torturing someone in my basement?
Asymmetrick do you have a car?
@@BroBruhBruv yup, that's actually what I've been using the last couple weeks lol although I have to hold back a little so I don't get so light headed screaming while driving.
Asymmetrick lol my problem with driving is I close my eyes on some parts so I’m swerving and shit hitting them high notes.
@@BroBruhBruv oh shit that's intense haha we both probably need to re-evaluate how we sing and drive
Ever considered parking the car before your screaming sessions? Just saying 😅
I actually went to a live architects concert. He sounded almost exactly like on his albums. Just an incredible singer all around
same, when I was 19 back in 2011. awesome b day gift, hopped on stage with same and screamed the hook to follow the water while we were hugging haha... front flipped into the crowd. god, I miss the 2010s...
@@a1d5proof or it didn’t happen
Sam Carter does sound almost the same Live as on the albums... However, the Live vocals aren't clean in most modern bands... They can still use a few of the same studio tricks live...
@@AEONGUERRILLERA If you're suggesting Sam is using live autotune and/or backing tracks then you clearly haven't been to an Architects show. If you're talking about stuff like compression and saturation, then that's hardly a new thing my guy.
@@AEONGUERRILLERAI mean that’s just normal for any concert, it’s done by the mixing engineer, but it doesn’t take away from the raw talent. It’s just to make sure the vocals cut through in the live mix and can be heard properly.
Thank you for being literally the only vocal coach with the balls to tell me that doing this correctly should, in fact, be a very similar feeling to trying to force out a shit.
I know now that if my back muscles are tired after singing, I've been supporting my voice right lol
“Sam Carter and the Architects” new lounge album coming soon.
Haha
I think Sam does a great job in capturing the pain and the aggression in his voice. Makes me shiver every time.
Being a tenor could help as well. XD
Greetings,
A Baritone
I'm also a baritone! So is Chris Cornell!
@@chrisliepe wow. Didn't expect that. That makes your range even more awesome!
my voice is sorta weird.
Chest voice spanning a bit more than two octaves from D2-F#4 and head voice reaching E5. Yet, multiple vocal coaches and choir teachers have come up to me assuming that I was a tenor (based on the "ease" of my high chest and the way my voice sounds).
Btw I would feel greatly honored if you'd tell me what you think about the screams in my video "What if Bad Guy was written by Architects". Hearing an expert's opinion would be incredible!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Greetings from Germany,
Dominik
@@chrisliepe you're a baritone???
I thought my life is over cuz I think I'm a baritone but I'm starting to think I'm even a baritone Bass, if there is such a thing
Cellar Studio Productions i feel like Sam Carter is a baritone
@@chrisliepe I find that hard to believe you sing pretty high most of the time lmao
Pls do a full cover for one of Architect's songs I need it in my life

Really respect your willingness to showcase the break stage of finding these sounds. It's essential to make the unflattering noises first, but I do not have the balls to post them even in tutorial form. Great approach as always, most insightful vocal channel on yt
Great video Chris! As a musician and vocalist I love your breakdown of every nuance in Sam's style of singing/screaming. I'd love to hear your take on Spencer from Periphery.
This would be amazing! Spencer is one of a kind
Yessss please do a video on Spencer Sotelo!

I love Sam's technique and voice in general.
At 4:17PM I FINALLY discovered my screaming voice, but that was only after a good strong year of experimenting & practicing with my own machinery! THANK YOU for showing me the way!!!!

This is the most thorough explanation of how to hit these vocals styles correctly that I've ever seen. So awesome.
This is the most comprehensive and professional scream vocal tutorial I've seen on here, great work
Well, I'm not a tenor and I'm not a baritone, I'm a bass, so I can't sing the way Sam does. After training my voice, I found that the highest note I can reach is A4. But I don't complain about that, because I really love my vocal type. Everybody can sing and develop a unique style. You just gotta apreciate your voice as it is, practice and give the best of you.
I LOVE your reply because it is very motivating. Thank you for taking the time. I grew up in a musical family, so being the cliche rebellious kid, I got into martial arts not music, and somehow became convinced that I didn’t have a singing voice anyways. But now, at nearly the age of 50, I’ve learned exactly what you just said, anyone can learn if they want to find their own unique voice! So so fun, and cathartic! Keep doing what you do man!
I have been waiting for this for so long! Thank you, Chris!
This is genuinely one of the most ambitious and well articulated vocal explanation videos I’ve ever seen.
Incredible the way you dissected it, just wow!
i've been wanting to learn and master this technique for a long time but never found someone who could explain it so thoroughly
thanks for your lessons!
Chris......I love you. Lol you always come out with these when I need them. I recently discovered Architects and have been mesmerized by them. Thank you

I love ur intro, it’s like... so warm.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Chris!!! I suggested it the other day on your UA-cam post and I'm so glad you made this video! I'm gonna watch it again and again!
The video i have been looking for! I was blown away the first time i heard Sam's voice and still am every time. I have become obsessed with learning how to scream/sing like that.
Mr. Liepe, I LOVE your explanations!!! Thank you so much for great content!
One of the best videos I've seen about vocal technique.
I've watched a lot of tutorials about screaming and stuff, and I think I've learned more from this single video than from all the other ones. Great work!
ive never seen any vocal lesson video that useful and helpful like yours before!!
Awesome video Chris. Sam Carter screams like many others in a way that I'd like to continue to decode to express myself vocally. Thanks again for being so generous with your knowledge and skill
Stopped looking for other tutorial video's when I found your channel. This video proves even more that it was a wise choice.
Thank you for what you do 👍🏻
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the absolute gold mine that this channel is?? Seriously Chris, I've been making leaps and bounds with my vocal progress and your videos have played a huge part in that. Thank you!
Great to hear and thank so much for commenting and consistently engaging with the videos!
Man! I really appreciate the time and effort Chris put's into this.
So insightful and so inspiring! Thank you for the effort and the insight!
Great prof! Sam Carter is actually incredible. Thank u.
so insightful, love the video Chris!
This is amazing. You explain things in a way that no other vocal coach ever has that I've ever seen and everything you say makes sense! I've been waiting to find someone who speaks my language for YEARS because I've always wanted to do these kinds of screams, but I've only ever been able to do False chord screams and perfectly clean cleans with no grit. I'm super excited to start trying some of what you say in this video because the "vocal break" idea you talk about is one of those things that finally makes sense to me just because of the way you worded it.

Fantastic explanations. Your descriptions work well for me. Thanks!
Yay! One of my favorite metalcore vocalists! I too requested this a while back. I've always admired the "pitched scream" technique. Not many people seem to sing with the intensity that Sam can! I've always struggled when trying to sing along to Architects songs. Not only due to the amount of compression and distortion, but he also it's some really high notes that always seem just barely out of reach for me. As for vocalists I'd love to see videos on: Jonny Craig, Tillian Pearson or Landon Tewers are all vocalists I admire that would be great to see a video on!!

Your voice is amazing Chris
Would be cool to see a video on Oli Sykes Sempiternal era singing/screaming
There is a podcast called "SWIM" (Someone who isn't me) where he talks about that he had practically no idea what he was doing and actually blew his voice out multiple times during the recording... So that would be maybe more of a "how to not do it" kinda video :D
Rabbits on Trees yup. Pretty much. If anything, doing the Sam Carter high scream/singing blend is probably the closest you can get to Oli without hitting yourself.
Either Sam or Chester Bennington. They both ACED that gritty blend which was what Oli was probably going for tbh.

Love this. Also love the note later you mention about dynamics and how it hits harder because of the light and dark in the songs. It's crazy how many metal bands I enjoy but they never hit quite as hard because it's constantly at full throttle. Architects know how to seperate, hit those feels. ❤️
Could you please do a part 2 to this video? Many fans will disagree with me but the latest 2 albums(that came out after this video) are probably Sam’s greatest work. Shows off his range and vocal uniqueness that have gotten so much better. Would love to learn the new style!!
This video really helps me a lot!!!😍
Once again, cool breakdown! I love, love, LOVE these videos, and the format! I like having the dry and wet comparisons, smart!
You’ve obviously got lots of videos like this lined up, but I’d like to request one done on Chino Moreno ( I love his use of dry and the way his voice breaks when he screams!)
Also Cedric Bixler-Zavala is another vocalist who does lots of cool things in his higher register, I imagine using mix, head and compression, that I’d like to see! Please and thank you!
Bro I legit looked for this on youtube two days ago and couldn't find a really good vid on it...THANK YOU!

I'm not a singer and never will be. But I somehow stumbled on your videos and have watched at least 20 since yesterday. I'm enthralled by your awesome personality, great singing voice and incredibly articulate teaching style. I've learned that the whole "screaming" aspect of this style of singing is a lot more about technique than brute force screaming. You've taught me a lot more about singing than I even realized there was to learn. Brilliant stuff!

I know this video is a little older, and I've heard you say this a few times, but I love the phrase "get your face out of the way." I'd totally forgotten about smiling while singing. My vocal coach when I was in my early 20s had a photo of herself with Placido Domingo and he had that perfect singing smile going, and she always pointed to it to remind us to get our cheeks up - thanks for reminding me about smile singing!

Hey Chris I’m new to your videos, but they’ve already helped me immensely. I’d love to see you do a video on the style of Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria, his range is incredible!
WOW!!!!!!!! You are the first I've ever seen to accurately describe this technique! So many other channels try describing this but get it wrong. The previous video you made on mixed voice + aggression was the closest thing to it, where you describe how there's a sort of "voice crack", "middle of the yodel" or voice break that gives the distorted sound but with this one you nailed it. Sam Carter, Spencer Sotelo, Chester Bennington, and you (and me :^]) are the only ones I've seen do this kind of vocals to any sort of extent. Shall we call it *Mixed Fry Vocals*? Not sure what to call it, but I haven't ever seen fry screams on top of mixed voice be characterized. It's not a power fry, it's not false chord, it's not a fry scream on its own. I am not sure how I would describe it perfectly but to its simplest, its mixed voice but fry scream on top in some sort of ratio, but as an independent sound. It is also possible to push these scream notes all the way up to the tip top of one's mixed voice (for my case, I do a Ab5 in this scream in my blood eagle cover uploaded to another channel not mine so it's not like i'm self-promoting :D). And what's best about this technique, which I haven't seen you discuss, is you can transition in and out of it at different gradients depending on how distorted you want your "clean" singing sound. I've described the scream/clean ratio as such: to sing bon jovi, 20% fry scream and 80% mixed voice, periphery 50% fry scream, architects 75% fry scream, and then screaming is ~90-95% fry scream. Another thing I notice is that I can't do this technique in chest voice, interestingly enough... only in mixed! If I wanna add grit in chest I do some sort of false chord / arytenoid mix, which I think I saw you describe as fry but I believe that's incorrect. I may be wrong though :)
Anyways, long paragraph done, great video!
Always so insightful! If you could do Tillian Pearson from Dance Gavin Dance, nobody has done this one.
