As a metal head and a big fan of this channel, it is so cool to see you covering this side of music. Would love to see more.
Same here. Also acknowledging that there's actual technique behind these kind of vocals. It ain't just noise or shouting, like many of my non-metalhead acquaintances do seem to think :)
We. Want. Opeth. Deliverance.
How about some ArchSpire??? Lol he might freak out.
Metalcore isn't metal
dude RIGHT?!
that's what I said.
honestly sam's vocals are some of the best i've ever heard live as far as metal is concerned
Have you seen A Day to Remember live?
@@davidlightfoot3217 unfortunately i didn't get the chance
@@davidlightfoot3217 Seen both live, Sam Carter is still better
Saw them headline in the US with while she sleeps and thy art is murder....amazing amazing live band, everything sounds so clear
My favorite vocalist that I've seen is either Tom Barber (Chelsea Grin, ex Lorna Shore) or Sean Harmanis from Make Them Suffer
Sam Carter, one of the best to ever do it. Dude is inhuman. BLEGHHHHHHHHHHH.
Yes, Architects is metalcore band. Hell yeah for knowing that! Bonus points for pointing out that they have djent elements as well. Architects sort of popularized that sort of metalcore djent style that so many bands play today.
Also, here's a video from a metal focused vocal teacher that analyzes his voice. You were right with the fry scream part though. ua-cam.com/video/y3oXdePYccE/v-deo.html
I really can't stand metalcore usually, but I kinda like Architect, I think it's the Djent vibe element that gets me a little bit
@@Abyzdecannes Have you checked out TesseracT or PeRIFFery?
@@BionicleSaurus Not really, I'm more into Black metal so I don't really search for metalcore bands ^^
@@Abyzdecannes Gotcha.
I have seen Architects live over 20 times over the last 9 years, and I can tell you with absolute certainty that he sounds EXACTLY like this live. There's definitely some minor editing for DVD purposes to polish things, but Sam is incredible live. And he has improved his technique SO much in recent years.
They've been together for 16 years, if I remember correctly, Sam joined in 2007, although they definitely sound a lot different today than they did back then.
god dammit! You are from the UK right? They mostly tour there and a poor lad from Eastern Europe can't get his rock's off to his fav band :'(
@@probg9779 bro... Tell that to asians. They never come here ;_;
@@probg9779 u can always go to uk tbh :) and fck yea back in the days my fav sonng was early grave :)))))) but yea it sounds def different but back in the day in 2007 that was the shit underground , now they popular is different always
I love the respect towards something that isn’t your preffered style
Sam carter has an incredibly high natrual singing voice, so whwn he distorts his voice he still maintains the scream element and still have a pitch.
Ye, getting that kinda pitch in a scream is just more to do with a person's natural voice, also helps that he does a mixed scream
This is the thing that drew me to Architects more than anything else when I first heard them
@@Blottski yea man Sam has such a unique voice.
Yeah he’s naturally a tenor, so his highs sound so effortless

Sam Carter is one of my favorite vocalists!! I'm primarily a metalhead, but I can appreciate good vocals from any genre. I'm glad that you occasionally do reactions to metal vocalists! Thank you for reacting to Architects! I'd love to see more metal/rock reactions. Your videos are always entertaining as well as educational!
Sam is one of the vocalists that popularized "pitched screaming" which, like you pointed out, is essentially screaming with an actual pitch as opposed to just screaming. Very difficult and he is one of the best at it.
Can you please do Sleep Token - The Offering?
Saw them live and Sam Carter is REALLY true to his studio performance in live
One of the few vocalist that is so good and consistent live
a lot of metal vocalists tend to be very consistent live. Spencer Sotelo of Periphery is incredible live. same with both of Erra’s vocalists.
love to see heavier music on this channel, so many people don't understand the intricacies of metal vocals and still think "it's just yelling". Love to see you shine some light on a misunderstood genre!
Metalcore isn't heavy
Ping Pong Cup Shots Of course there had to be that one guy
@@koenigseggagera8255 if you wanna droptune a guitar, play bass
@@Untoldanimations Spam reported.. ;D
@@LoveScreamTrue what do you think spam is
God yes🙏 I've been waiting for something on Architects/Sam Carter
And yea, Metalcore
more metal vocalists, you looked like you well enjoyed it !
Id love to see you're reaction to Phil Bozeman Unanswered haha
haha, would be funny.
i'd like to see that too, the guy is a monster
YES YES YES THIS HAS TO HAPPEN!
Fuck yeah! Bozeman on that track is better than the original imo
How about a little series of Sam learning new styles like a few variants of screaming/shouting and death metal grunts ?
I think it would be interesting to see you figure out how to do those styles correctly.
Mark from Kardavox Academy would be a perfect feature guest for this
Sam Carter really IS a wizard machine! He has a very strong vocal performance and is pretty consistent with his control of pitched screaming. I'm glad you reacted to this. Thank you for the great videos and knowledge you put out into the world!
The thing that many people seem to believe is that singing with no up to insane amounts of distortion is a linear function paralleled by the amount of airflow and push needed to create it.
But THAT is not the case.
I've found that adding grid to your chest voice is sustainable once you understand that you don't need to create more pressure and airflow to achieve it.
Here's how I like to think about it:
You have your base tone which is nice and relaxed for your larynx, well supported by the diaphragm and not or only slightly compressed (not "winy").
Now here's the trick:
If you want to get gritty you start compressing the "clean sound" which requires less airflow allowing you to lean into the sound engaging the tissue responsible for creating the desired effect of distortion, but without pushing your clean tone.
You could say you're changing the distribution of the power you have within your base tone to favor the gritty effect whilst compressing the clean tone underneath. You're blending between two tones.
That's at least how it feels for me.
It's definitely a blend of two tones, it is after all an overlay vocal effect, and there's multiple ways you can get it and get different sounding distortions, just make sure the compression and the grit itself comes from above the vocal folds, the actual vocal folds have even less pressure than a regular clean.

Thanks for taking the time to do reactions to heavier music even though it's not in your own realm of singing styles. You should try Rule of Nines by Spiritbox!!
Spiritbox, Spoil Engine and Infected Rain 👌🏻
Yes! This is something he could work with because of how well she switches styles.
@@Draculthered also her cleans are great to
Also Courtney's live recording of The Beauty of Suffering is very impressive and covers her range.
@@metalflower9543 infected rain would be a good band to do as the vocalist of that band is a student of Melissa Cross and uses fry screaming (which is the only type of distorted vocals Sam is familar with, so might be a good start)
Yes Architects! He did it! I absolutely love this, seen Architects a couple of times now and the singer is fantastic.
I’ve seen architects several times. Definitely no pitch correction since I could every once and a while hear tiny mess ups. Every show was at this level and one of the best live show experiences I’ve ever had. Sam is an absolute beast on vocals!!
Not a fan of this genre of music but mightily impressed with how you two broke down the techniques and described a lot of the sound they achieved.
I love this type of “pitched” screaming sound. It sounds interesting and you can actually hear the lyrics.
YES! Finally the style of music I listen to! I would love Periphery or ERRA next, but any reacts make me happy :)
Periphery would be great since they recently made those live videos
@@alisthesia I wasn't super impressed by Spencer in those videos and I'm saying that as a HUGE periphery fanboy. I've heard better from him live
@@SlackWi same my guy, in those videos he made my singing voice sound good lol
You guys hit the nail on the head with just about everything you said! This dude is just plain amazing and I’m pretty sure he uses an extremely developed fry scream by being able to build a lot of compression with his diaphragm! You pretty much nailed the basic sound too (although it’s placed more in the nasal cavity and towards the soft pallet)
Did you do a reaction to Doomsday, too? There's both a heavy version and calmer, acoustic reprise type of version, which Sam totally rules. That's also, actually the first track they released after their guitarist's death.
I always love that you try and spread your analysis all through out genres, even with some limited knowledge in other techniques beyond your formation you have a pretty good sense of whats going on. That being said I still want some more boundries lifted and see some commentary on the likes of amazing singers like Nina Hagen, Klaus Noni, Siouxsie Sioux, etc. I think I miss having some death rock, post-punk, etc, here as well since most of them had really peculiar styles and personas. The two of you together are hilarious btw, keep on bringing friends.
Please please PLEASE react to the “TesseracT Of Matter (Live at Sphere Studios)” performance!! It’s one of my favorite live performances ever...btw love your channel!!
Yess to that ☝️
The vocals in this performance are phenomenal!!! Please do a reaction to what @CelinaByHand said
Another vote for this plx!
They sound almost exactly the same live as they do on record. It's amazing how talented they all are.
Been watching your videos for a while. Never thought you'd be reacting to Architects. Pleasantly surprised!
I've been waiting this video for so long!! Love It!!
I've been following this channel for a while and it's so funny to suddenly see you reacting to a live video of a show I've actually been to :D Architects are my favourite band in the world and I stood in the second row when this video was filmed. The whole show was absolutely epic and since I've seen them so many times over the years I can just say that their performance simply never disappoints, they really are this good.
so stoked to see architects on here!! sam is one of the coolest dudes i've ever been able to meet. and yeah, tom, the guitarist who passed, is actually the twin of the drummer, dan. so they all lost their brother but one of them literally lost a brother. if you wanna hear more of sam's clean vocals check out the acoustic version of their song heartburn! (also: their first record with sam as a vocalist came out in 2007!)
Really love the whole sounding board aspect of these videos with the two of you.
Thank you so much, we needed this
I attended this exact Concert last year, it was phenomenal.. the energy you get from his dedication while he´s singing is just unimaginable.
and I can actually confirm that what you´re hearing in this video is pretty much what we heard at the Concert
his screams are something that no one can do in this music genre. i get goosebumps when he started screaming. it's something in between screaming and clean vocals, it sounds way more powerful than anything that any other artist can do. Sam Carter has been working hard on perfecting that over the years
Been waiting for this, thanks you! Also kinda can't believe my comment was on the request list of comments on screen! Keep up the awesome videos!
FUCK YEAH! Waited so long for this! Great video guys!
Yesss!!! Love these guys so much!!!
Instant like! I’m so glad you took the time to step out of your comfort zone and analyzed some of the finest metalcore ever! Sam Carter is such a legend... I found your thoughts were very accurate, open-minded and you showed such a genuine interest to the song and the band, though it might not be smth you would have listened on your own... thank you 🙏
Actually I was there (german here). It sounded exactly as you hear it in this video. Sam's vocals are just fucking amazing 😍
Dito. Es war unfassbar gut
I've seen them live quite a lot and I'm pretty confident to say that Sam has definitely this mad voice and he's still doing this like a boss
You have to check out Satellites by Periphery. I gurantee you will be blown away. It has mostly clean vocals but also some screaming and it's just a masterpiece
I literally just woke up and this is the best start to my day!
I really really enjoyed this 🤘🏽 Already a big fan of the band - really enjoyed this take on it all.
Best band live. Their energy is out of this world and I wish I could master Sams vocals
I was at that show! It was absolutely mindblowing. Just pure energy
You gained a lot of my respect from this video. Metal music has so much talent and it’s amazing to see live
Hey Sam!
Cool video. Learned some things about Sam and just my own voice singing in the shower! Haha. Thanks and always love your videos!
One of my favourite bands! Thank you for covering Architects ❤️ And Sam is the best
“Were almost 30 seconds into this, and....that’s how fair use works.”
He is just a wizard machine!
Sam sounds exactly like the recording, if not better. Every time I see architects, they blow my mind.
Also I’ve seen Architects live a few times, and they’re absolutely amazing. Sam’s voice is so on point. Definitely my favourite live band! Bleghh!
This is the quickest I’ve ever clicked on one of your videos hollyyy shit I’m excited
Its awesome seeing guys like you react to Sam's vocals. He is a different breed.
So cool to finally see your analysis of Sam Carter
Can we just keep Hiram always pls?
Hey thanks!

@@HiramSeason2 Love watching you listen to the recording and picking out production details. You interactions with Sam are also so fun

I was on their concert here in Australia last year and I have to say is a mad experience! So cool!
Yes, Architects! 🔥
Lol man this was such a cool video, to see a couple guys who know what they are talking about break down Sam Carter. Thanks for the vid boys
Thank you for covering this. Amazing live band.
I love your videos Sam!
Another metal head here who thinks this is super fun!
More analyzes of metal vocalists please!
I'm so glad you brought Melissa Cross to the conversation, 'cause I didn't see the previous video with Hiram and I was from the beginning thinking about the Zen of Screaming!
Sam is the best, bro!! Saw a lot of fancams along the years a know the band (12 years, i think?) and he sounds great, always!
Love this with two people .. keep him for good . Subbed
You should try getting in contact with Kardavox Academy. He’s been covering a lot of the newer metal scene vocalists and how to achieve certain sounds and techniques much like you do in your videos. Would be awesome to hear you guys discuss other kinds of music too as he’s also trained in classical singing too I believe
Hey, thanks a lot for pointing me to that channel! DIdn't know, looks awesome. Just subscribed.
Venâncio Filho No problem, have fun singing some metal!
Totally second this! I was thinking the same thing
his channel is awesome. alot of very interesting info. and i think he explains everything really well
His band Kardashev is amazing too and definitely worth checking out
it’s amazing to me how accurate sams pitch usually is while doing the heavy distorted singing style. the melodies are clear and catchy while still sounding like a scream
I'm am sooooo fxcking happy a vocal coach is reacting to metal. Thank you for being open to all genres of music :)
I was clicking off the video as you were saying about non fans already tuning out. 🤣 I'll be back for the next one!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO REVIEW SAM!!!
Yesss. One of my fav bands.
I was there live and this show was the fucking shit. The whole band is just spot on, love it.
Ps. Great video. Liked that you tried to think of how you‘d do it, even if you‘re not experienced in that style!
I highly recommend, if given the chance to see them live. They are literally mind blowing. Sam's voice is unrivalled for what it is.
I've had the privilege of seeing them live in a small venue and they are amazing, he sounds as good as the album's live. Sam Carter is the man.
It's cool that u r reacting to this type of singing and there r some bands that has singers will blow ur mind. Explore new worlds dude
That was alot of fun. Thanks guys!
I love the metal reactions, everything you did on Jinjer (Perennial, Pisces) was awesome. Also I loved the Devin Townsend one.
Sam Carter has an unreal ability to have distorted vox with melody on pitch. Its simply amazing and so many singers could never do this.
He IS A WIZARD MACHINE!
No way.
NO FREAKING WAY!
I needed this today!
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Wow! Nice video!
Hey Sam, you should check out Courtney LaPlante from the band Spiritbox! She was in a mathcore(?) metal band called "iwrestledabearonce" before she and Michael, her bandmate in IWABO both left to start Spiritbox (and they got married).
Since then, they've released some fantastic singles and Courtney's a very talented self-taught vocalist. Compared to her time in IWABO, Spiritbox has really let Courtney be more melodic, pop-oriented and drive the music with emotion and atmosphere, rather than pure chaos.
If you want to check out their live stuff, they don't have much, as they're going on their first real tour soon, but they have done some live studio sessions. Check out The Mara Effect Pt.1 through Pt. 3 here: ua-cam.com/video/JreCi4pQtII/v-deo.html
Dylan Chau iwrestledabearonce is fucking amazing
Honestly these guys sounded exactly like that when I saw them live, they were essentially flawless. Legends.
My favorite thing about architects is the ability to hear the lyrics clearly when he screams, its really freaking good!
Yes, more stuff like this. Metal and rock vocals are a very underappreciated style in today's culture. It's cool to see you do this
Loved it ! I was more of a metalhead when I was in highschool, but I still love it though. This band is fire !!!
Had the pleasure of seeing this band live and the most impressive part of Sam Carter's vocal repertoire is his ability to fully enunciate the lyrics while heavily distorting his voice. I've yet to listen to an Architects song where you can't follow the words nearly perfectly. Especially in the context of the genre they exist at the top of, Sam's a beast and their songs wouldn't hit nearly as hard without him.
You guys need your own podcast. Love videos with Hiram!
I was at that very gig and yes the guy is a damn wizard machine. The whole thing was so amazing and emotional.
Saw them live. Incredible voice and band!
Thank the lord you covered Architects finally i was wondering when you would review and react to Sam Carters Voice. personally in the Metal world he is my favorite vocalist.
Love to see it.
I saw Architects this past January, and they played Royal Beggars. From what I can tell, there's a slight smoothing if his pitch but other than That, He sounded pretty much like this video. It was amazing, and Sam has beautiful vocals
i understand this is the opposite end of your specialty but i really appreciate you doing it. its nice to hear a professional's perspective on screams(difficulty, talent, etc) and how good are a metal singers cleans. i hope you throw a metal song in every now and then for some of us
This was definitely one if not the best concert I ever went to, amazing croud too
i was at that show. what youre hearing in the live vid is pretty much the exact same of what we heard live. architects are imo the best live band in terms of sound i have ever heard and ive been to a lot of architects shows...
I´m blessed that i saw architects twice in last 2 years, and Sam is so fucking great at live that i couldnt believe its not prerecorded, none is even close to sound like that at live concerts from what i was able to see... maybe Lawrence from WSS?
"it was so good for me"
"shut up"
They've been active since 2004, and were such an influence through my teenage years. One of the tightest and hard working bands in the industry.
Yeah he’s a heck of a singer, almost has like a falsetto pitch under the screams.
I've seen Architects live 3 times now and I agree with other people commenting here: they are as awesome as they sound in the video. Idk how Sam does it, but he deliveres every.god.damn.time.! I remember the first time hearing Doomsday live (it's the first song they released after Tom passed) and bursting into tears while singing along, because the emotions conveyed just hit me so hard.
Haha I was on exactly that concert and it was crazy. There also played Beartooth and Polaris. All of those bands are really good.
It would be cool, if you reacted to Beartooth as well. I do think their voice is also kind of special.
