Where I live ammo cans are $15 at the military surplus store and $14 at Walmart. It’s obvious I buy them at the military surplus store because they are made in America. And I support that small business.
I'm sticking with the US made surplus. The problem with the Wal Mart cans to me is the seals. They are much softer than the US made ones and I really don't think they'll last as long. Plus you can't beat the stenciling on the US cans- Gives em' character.
Oh yeah the US surplus has character all over it. Also the seal on the US can is much better on sealing. I did a video on testing it out if you want to check it out.
The USA is harder seal because it sat longer in the warehouse. Both were designed and tested by US company. If you want to support US labor then just call it. There is no quality difference on the two ammo box. It not the reason anymore. I certify tested a lot of product on both civil and military grade for many years and I can tell you the quality difference over the last ten years were minimal to none and many times US made product, essentially includes electronics, failed more than made in China.
I bought a dozen of the genuine U.S. Military ammo cans from Clean Ammo Cans 3 or 4 years ago. Paid about $175 for 12 of them. They are some of the nicest military ammo cans I have seen. I haven’t used any of them yet because I have other ammo cans from the U.S. Military that I have been using. I also have a bunch of the 40 gram silica gel packs encased in aluminum containers to go inside of each can for moisture control. The seals can be protected by applying a silicone lubricant to the seals. I will absolutely not keep my ammunition in a plastic ammo can. I don’t trust the seals on the plastic cans. The plastic cans don’t clamp down tight enough.
The Walmart ammo cans are only spot welds on the bottom with a little bit of sealer. If you turn it upside down and push on it with a screwdriver it will break the seal loose
Just bought five of them for $8.87 at Walmart last weekend and I cant tell the difference I was going to check the wall thickness but haven't yet I don't think there is much difference. Years ago I used to buy military surplus cans for five bucks now they want 20.00 I can buy 2 cans from Walmart and have change left over. I buy U.S. made when I can but I wont pay over 100 percent more for a used surplus can over new can.
Steve Stonacek oh yeah I agree. There is a slight difference in the thickness. Hey be sure to check out my other videos on the ammo cans. Thanks for watching
Have one chinese one and the spot welds on the hinge came off of the can. Had to go reweld it so I could use it. Never had any problems with USGI surplus.
Yep I know what you mean. If you check out the water test you will see why that is the best choice for an ammo can. Yeah I’m starting to hate Walmart myself lol. Thank you for watching.
Great video! I have a US can and a harbor freight one that surprisingly was made in Vietnam as of 2024 and I also cannot tell the difference in them functionally other than the HF one was brand new and on sale for $10.
I have many USGI ammo cans. I repainted them to get rid of the stencil marks and hide the minor flaws. USGI tends to be a little taller however they stack and inter lock with the box from Walmart and hold the same amount of rounds/boxes. Walmart's new ammo cans are about half the price of used/rusty/bent USGI cans.
Yeah you are right. Like I said the main reason people buy the USA surplus cans is the cool factor of them. But to hold ammo the ones at Walmart or academy or basspro will be less money and do the same thing. I did some more videos on testing the cans out like a water dunk and stuff like that.
Any container that holds air whether a submarine or an ammo can, subject to condensation over time. (water vapor coming through the metal shell) What's important is the barrier/seal not being compromised. Plastic cans deform and break seal just from the weight of the contence. (have done the testing myself 50 years ago) I still have Federal Premium 270 150 gr BTSP stored in metal cans that is just as shiny as it was 40 years ago and it still shoots as if it was new.
1001!!! Good job and well deserved! Hope ya'll get well soon. One of my job qualifications in the army was 55B...ammo handler. Cheap boxes are not something we used, but government dont do anything on the cheaps.
We tossed around and discarded too many of these ammo cans while I was in the military, for me to pay money for them now as a civilian. Like MREs, I didn't realize they were so sought after.
Nice review. I've bought way more boxes from big box stores but I do have several military surplus cans too. I prefer the new ones since rubber seals degrade over time.
Yes i got to admit !! There is not much difference between the 50cal ammo box made in us and the china made aside from the china made box has a lighter green color ...I saw the exact same one in your video at Harbor Freight black friday sale on metal 50cal green ammo boxes on sale for $9.99 !!! WOW , so i bought 10 ammo boxes bcs a it was such a great deal 😊
I only buy mil surplus Ammo cans. To ensure a tight seal, I take an empty Ammo can and light a candle inside, lock it down and let it burn the air out. When you go to open it, if the can is hard to open and sucks air in on opening - indicating an airtight seal - it’s a keeper. If any surface rust, I scrub the rust off with a wire brush and spray paint the can with black hammer tone, which is a nice look. Of course, I personally would never buy anything from China.
Rock -N- Ruin haha definitely not for someone OCD lol there is about a half inch deference in the two cans. Thanks for watching and commenting. Sick around I'll be doing an experiment with the two cans to further the comparison.
I buy usa when i can but i also dont like buying used items and finding a good deal on newer ammo cans isnt the easiest harbor freight has some that have also been tested but still 15$. I got lucky one day at my locate walmart they miss priced these for 8.00$ i bought all 4 they had on the shelf and for the price i can get over the fact they are not usa made they pretty sound in my opinion and hold plenty of my reloads.
A coworker told me to try this test. But maybe you should try it and make a video of it. Fill the walmart chinese made ammo can with rocks, lock it, and submerge it in a tub/tank of water for 24 hrs. After 24 hours, remove the ammo can out of the tub of water. If you have dry rocks out of that can, GREAT! If your rocks are wet, then you know that chinese made can is garbage. I bought one a few days ago, but I'm on the fence about returning it. On the other hand, they have like 9 more of them sitting behind a locked glass shelf there in their sporting goods department, and I was tempted to buy them all, or buy more than just one.
The usa made ones are better, the chinese one might Seem like a better deal but you notice the quality diffrence when you load them full of ammo and throw them around! USA all the way baby!
I know you just said you have trouble with your carpal tunnel nerve people who have had carpal tunnel surgery in the past. Keep on doing what they kept on doing. It’s going to flare up again. You’ve got a change the way your movements of your wrist.
Love ammo boxes! Have 8 so far 😎. They are mixed brands, and I have noticed some are easier to drill than others. So there is definitely a difference in metal on some. Still not enough to out me off of them 👍👍
I got a dozen .50 caliber cans from Clean Ammo Cans a couple of years ago. They are some of the best USGI ammo cans that you can buy. Everybody says “buy American”, but almost everything is made somewhere else. The pharmaceutical drugs for American consumption are made in China. Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart, used to advertise “proudly made in America”. If Sam knew what Wal-Mart has become, with all of their Chinese crap, he would be rolling over in his grave. It’s hard to buy American when almost nothing is made in America anymore.
Great video Spicy. I have 2 .50 cal cans and a .30 cal can. all 3 are surplus deals. Love them. thinking of getting another .50 can to make a small portable stove possibly later this year some time. I agree on the Wal Mart cans though. Not enthused that they are made in China, but for the quality and price, they are hard to beat. China stepped up their game in the quality department for many items. I still would rather by USA goods, but in this instance, either one would be a great buy.
I love the us ammo cans. I get one just about every month if not every 3 weeks. Make sure you see the other ammo can videos I put them through some test.
China ones I have had the lid just fall off every time I open the lid. Never have that with the US Army ammo cans. Farm and fleet has military cans cheaper than that.
Good to see someone give an honest opinion and not just trash talk on another product solely because it’s out of another country. I’ve seen better things come out of China than “Murica” all the time.
Over the years i've bought 3 walmart 50 cal ammo cans, all made in china, all different brands. 2 of them the lids will swap, the 3rd one is different, the 2 that match fit ON a US can but will not latch, the clamp is in a different spot. But they are still $5 cheaper than US cans... Hows your arm ?
The proof comes from a submersion test. Load it with enough dry material to make it sink. Let it stay a week and see if it stays dry. If it does it is ok. I believe the heavier surplus cans are better. That said the cheaper china stuff may be ok.
If china can make iphones ipads macbook pro milwaukee power tools. All the best top of the line computers and electronics and tools and products. They can make a damn metal box.
Oh yeah they are great. I just got 6 more. My walmart had them on sell for $6. And of course I had to order 5 more of the military ammo cans. Never can go wrong with those. Thanks for watching.
Im so glad you did this video cause my oldest son wants one for Christmas and I wasn't sure which to get. Wal Mart is lol Hope your surgery goes well and that your wife feels better soon
Mojo thank you very much. My wife is doing much better. I had surgery on my hand in October. 4 on the back of my hand, 1 on my palm of my hand and 1 one on my elbow. Still doing therapy but able to do a little more now. Thank you for your prayers.
Hey Spicy and friends,Just passing along what a lot of WW2 Vets told me. They would put duct tape around the outside of the lip of the box for an even better seal. Folks can do it or not Im just tossing it out there.Take care all.
From a prepping standpoint, some of the things preppers are concerned with, economic collapse, attacks from other countries, I see no reason to buy Chinese when an American version is available. No one likes paying more, but look what retailer you're supporting, and which workers you're supporting. I buy US made towels....they're double the cost of the others on the shelf. If we don't support our American workers and factories, we'll have no one to blame but ourselves for more unemployment and.more businesses closing.
You are absolutely correct and you make a great point. Thank you for that comment. Plus US made is way better quality, what ever it is. You have a great day.
How was the Chinese box painted? Is there lead in the paint? Bet you don't know, I do know the USA box has no lead. You are comparing a surplus box to a brand new box, come back in a few years and see what one is still working.
Philip Adams I'm sorry I sent you a message but didn't see what video it was. If you will please watch my video of the water dunk on the two boxes. Thank you for your thoughts on the situation and comment. Please feel free to let me know what you think on the others.
I've noticed a metal gauge difference between the Chinesium Cans and US Made Cans. The US made Cans measure 0.8 - 1.2 mm the Chinese cans mic out at 0.6mm. Chinese cans may be painted OD Green, but they do not have the Phosphated finish under that paint that US Cans have. Mil-Spec US Cans are designed for a 30 Year Stored Shelf Life. Chinese Cans have no such testing. You get what you pay for is what it all comes down to. I've a couple of Cans that are WW II era manufacture ~80 years and they still seal. I'm not saying the Chinese Cans won't serve you for years, but I prefer to buy American Made products. Joe Biden probably gets a kickback on every Chinese Can sold.
I was sure hoping you would say that the china copy used lead paint or the rubber gasket caused cancer in lab rats. i hate hearing anything good about chinastan but I just went through the same thing concerning a belt sander. There is no American made belt sander and if you want one, it has to be chinese made.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose hahaha you are so right. The only bad thing I could think of was it was not built for military use lol. I've put it to the test and for the money you can't beat the damn thing.
I used to go through Chinese made "Gerber" knifes. They lasted about a year each, broke 4 then went American, Benchmade..... 3 years of hard use and still going. You just can't beat American tools!
Sorry I forgot to add, you MUST inspect these cans before you buy. Make sure you're getting a good one, there are crap ones sitting on the shelf next to the good ones. Be warned!
I bought a Walmart can to compare to the military ones that I have and I noticed the same thing. The walls look bowed on the Chinese can. I believe the steal is inferior to the U.S. steal .
Soravia yes the China can are cheaply made. I have a few more videos where I put them to the test like the water dunk test. That video show just how awesome the USA ammo can is.
The made in china is not durable compared to US made. I accidentally dropped an empty can in the floor and it won't close properly since then. The material they used with china made ammo can is not strong enough.
John Miller hahahaha I live in south Arkansas from south Louisiana I’ve said that my whole entire life. I’m as countryman it gets. But it does matter that I’m white or black or yellow or green. I will never be something that I’m not. What you see in my videos is how I am 24-7. Thanks for the chat.
I have some chinesium cans and they dont fit into MTM trays as they are larger at the base, will be trying the HF box but probably comes from same plant. Here is the mtm 50 cal tray. www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/np/metal-ammo-can-tray-50.php
China dog food killed my dog! And many others dogs. My mom's house in Florida has Chinese drywall in it and the acidic gasses ate all the wiring. China....good luck with that! NO THANKS!
Daniel, God is my judge holy crap sorry about the dog. Where did you get China made dog food from? And I have never heard of China made drywall but if I ever build a house I will stay away from that stuff thanks for that info.
Backwoods Raised , most of the dog food you find in Walmart and other commercial stores come from China. Thee drywall, contractors purchased it in bulk and I know at least quite a few new developments in Florida, the houses all had to be gutted and rewired because the acidic gases that came off the drywall just destroyed the wiring.
Yeah I do apologize. This was one of my first videos. I have learned and been told my intros was to long. My videos today are shorter. It would be great if you seen one of my last videos. Thank you for your opinion.
What would you like me to do with a ammo can. I can make something with one or see what it takes to tear one up. Let me know.

@@BackwoodsRaised thank you. Looking at tractor the. But 24 $ for 50 cal is to HIGH.
Ask Commiefornia Congressman Eric Swalwell...
I'm buying America made period.
The china made stout stuff cans are $9.77 at walmart right now, amazing deal.
Oh yeah really good deal. I need to see if they have any here.
The Ammo Can - What's the difference - China vs USA, I will look for the other one.
we play with lead in ammo all day long, but this guy is worried about lead in the paint,,LOL
US one's abitty bigger looks nicer too with it's more rounder edges year rather have an original than a knock off
Terry, you & your wife are in my prayers. Hang in there!
Glenokla thank you 😊
You're very welcome! Anytime.
A good Spokesman for Walmart. Very nice comparison, Price vs durability always a factor in my purchases .Thanks for sharing.
Oldies&Goodies thanks for watching. I will buy both but the USA army ammo can is still my favorite lol
Hope your hand's going to be alright!
Tube Attack - UA-cam Tips thank you I hope they can get things back to the way it was. I've been dealing with this injury for 3 months lol
Just found 2 a walmart 9.99 each
Different steel, the other if you look is bowed USA isnt!
yes diffidently different steel. Hey I hope you check out the other videos I have on these two ammo cans.
Yeah but if you're carful you can bend them into shape, and for $8.49 you really can't beat them.
Sorry I forgot to add, you MUST inspect these cans before you buy. Make sure you're getting a good one, there are crap ones sitting on the shelf next to the good ones. Be warned!
John Miller yeah you are right but if take care of your equipment you want bend nothing. Thanks for watching
I bought a Walmart can to compare to the military ones that I have and I noticed the same thing. The walls look bowed on the Chinese can. I believe the steal is inferior to the U.S. steal .
The difference is that one is Chinese and one is American….and that’s ALL I need to know.
LOL Chinese can tin is already twisted. I buy plastic or I buy made in USA steel.
Soravia yes the China can are cheaply made. I have a few more videos where I put them to the test like the water dunk test. That video show just how awesome the USA ammo can is.
I buy my ammo cans for $9.97 when ever I can.
Oh yeah. I’ve got several of them now.
Yeah, The harbor freight ones go for 9.97 pretty often when they send out coupons
The made in china is not durable compared to US made. I accidentally dropped an empty can in the floor and it won't close properly since then. The material they used with china made ammo can is not strong enough.
Make sure you check my other ammo can videos. I put these cans to a few test. We all know which one passes the test.
You should apologize for saying "what's crackalackin" that was sad.... Still, I wish you and your wife good health God bless.
John Miller hahaha why is that sad
John Miller hahahaha I live in south Arkansas from south Louisiana I’ve said that my whole entire life. I’m as countryman it gets. But it does matter that I’m white or black or yellow or green. I will never be something that I’m not. What you see in my videos is how I am 24-7. Thanks for the chat.
John Miller You PARINOID RACIST FUCK, you, not welfare is the reason the immigrants are turned off to the REPUBLICAN WAY. Greetings from CALI.
Obviously not a avid patriot.
I have some chinesium cans and they dont fit into MTM trays as they are larger at the base, will be trying the HF box but probably comes from same plant. Here is the mtm 50 cal tray.
www.mtmcase-gard.com/products/np/metal-ammo-can-tray-50.php
Would you recommend the HF box?
excellent video friend shout bak & welcome to my channel
The reason its not shit is probably because the chinese military uses them as well anything they dont really want send it over seas
Keep it American
Just buy USA. I rather pay a bit more than to give a guy a dollar on the street cause he has no job.
Buy American 🇺🇸
You paid for this boxes once (taxes) now you pay for them agian but from your own poket... ha ha
Haha yeah never thought about it that way but you are right.
Thought this video was about ammo cans and not your surgeries.
Some things yes, but you can still find some good stuff if you look a little. Very sorry to hear about you dog.
Chinese ammo cans are crap. Spend your money for the real deal
Yep
Intro is way too long and the music is way too loud... Will not watch another video from you. Have enough hearing damage already thanks.
Yeah I do apologize. This was one of my first videos. I have learned and been told my intros was to long. My videos today are shorter. It would be great if you seen one of my last videos. Thank you for your opinion.
Your opinions not worth much
Sorry you feel that way. I do appreciate you stopping by and watching. Have a good one.
