A little piece of advice. When loading ammunition into these steel U.S. Military ammo cans, don’t go bigger than the .50 caliber cans. Years ago, I bought 2 .50 caliber cans full of Norinco 7.62 X 39 mm ammunition. It was difficult to get them just a few hundred feet to my vehicle because they were so heavy. The bigger cans should be used for medical supplies or food or other lighter items. But definitely not for ammunition. Anything much larger than the .50 caliber cans will require 2 people to carry them.
Surplus cans are excellent for so much more than most folks realize. I use more of the larger cans than the smaller .30s and .50s. I use the PA 156 81 mm Mortar Cans for Cache boxes. You can store an AR 15 (in 2 pieces, 16 magazines ready to go. I sandblast the used boxes after checking the O-Ring, and the 3 coats inside and out of Epoxy Enamel. One box, has been in the ground now for 15 years. It still is completely intact, no rust and no moisture. I use the 20mm, 40mm, and 60mm Mortar Size Cans to. One 60 mm can has been converted for a complete Comms Base Station including 2 12 VDC Deep Cell Computer Batteries so I can run it without AC power through an inverter for 48 hours on the batteries alone. The ladder antenna is kept in a tall .50 can PA 19.
You missed the Fat Fifty /SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)... And the REALLY awesome big brothers , the 20mm and 30mm! Those are my two faves. Guys, all your tools can go in these. If you have a pneumatic nailer.... It goes in, with oil, all the various nails you need and a AirCel hose. You can make boxes out of 3/8 ply to fit and stack for smaller goods. I am in love with ammo cans.
The ammo cans for 120mm artillery shells are the perfect size for making a hard case for an ar15 pistol. Get a can of glue and a cheap yoga mat to pad the inside.
I use the aluminum rocket boxes for storing food and camp gear when I car camp. Great for organizing your kitchen department and keeping the outdoor critters out of your stuff.
We’lol see in the news... Entire company goes into active shooter lock down. Skittles finds himself the only one in the lunchroom, much like Jim Brewer at sears. A little tracked robot will record the confused look on his face right before he is shot by swat. The media and liberals will rejoice having yet another reason to ban any scary looking thing like a gun. ( but oddly nobody is concerned about dodge chargers) Pack something really good for your last meal, Skittles. 😋
I’ve never seen rods that go through the channels that are affixed to the sides of the larger cans before. I thought they were to keep the steel sides from flexing as their dimensions increase.
If you care about your ammo use the best cans but the cheap plastic ones are useful for other things. I personally have several of the cheap plastic, narrow ones (from Harbor Freight) full of heirloom seed packets as my seed bank. They do have a rubber gasket in the top to seal it well. All of the 'cans' are labeled so I know where to find which seeds. (Yes, I know this is about ammo but I often think outside the box and color outside the lines.)
These ammo cans are great. Very useful. Just beware of "anything", "Military Surplus" from MidWayUSA. My experience is not good on several items. Bought some surplus 7.62x51 ammo and had to use a hammer and screwdriver to get the can open. Ammo was fine, but the can was trashed.
Pete Argabright yeah me ether definitely is far from their fault there still finding ww2 ammo cans in Germany rusted shut and they pry them open without damaging it that’s on him plus that just means that it’s probably a very good seal
I made a little wood stove from one of my older, busted ammo cans. Removed the rubber gasket & got creative w/ fire resistant glue. Old thick rain gutter for pipe. It's fun on the back porch. Used it once when backpacking. Put it in the vestibule of my two man tent, worked out well. Downside is u have to feed it wood about ev hour... Works if u need heat though!
In a old war photo my grandpa had a strap to carry a ammo box think it was the .50 version. I think a .30 be good for a medkit small keep the bandages nice n dry.
When using these for storage, I clean out the inside rust, and paint them white inside. Makes finding stuff in the dark MUCH easier. Then maybe paint the outside a mission specific color.
That’s all I have my ammo stored in. I have a few of the plastic ones too but can’t put too many rounds in them without the handle flopping out. Will be buying more of the metal ammo cans!
I think the "rod holders" on the sides of the can are in place as stiffeners to make sides of the can more ridged so the sides don't buckle from the weight of being stacked so when fully loaded with ammo the bottom can isn't crushed when at the bottom of a stack of cans 5 or 10 cans high ....... and don't have anything to do with carrying options
Thanks for the in person size comparison. I was USN and the 556,50, and 25mm cans were common but I was thinking of picking up a 40 can and couldn't visualize the size. Just trying to better organize different calibers better without tripping over a huge bunch of 50 cans
Tactical Tupperware! When I was twelve, I made a first aid kit, a very substantial one, from a 50 caliber ammo can. My dad always carry to power drill, and a saber saw / jigsaw, in ammo cans he had painted.
i have boiled water in them (for shaving, not drinking), and have even seen them used as a crapper when we were in a long ambush position to avoid smells. (not a fan of that use). ammo cans are great. be aware there are "fakes" out there, i.e. not u.s. surplus. (china knockoffs) walmart and academy sell them as well as others. that being said, those seem pretty good too.
Those fakes are typically plastic, I've seen some great "re production" metal ones in "new" condition though from china. Only 30 and 50 Cal's though. I'd love a new mortar can.
I remember this guy selling these on the road just north of Baton Rouge on the way to Natchez. Would pick up a few of all different sizes. The only limitation besides the weight is that they are not effective as EMP proof containers unless you sand the edges around the lid and rim , seal with aluminum tape etc. But I will never buy another tupperware, sterilite, or rubbermaid plastic container again. The plastic deteriorates, cracks, not uv resistant etc. Buy ammo cans once, cry once. Wal Mart sells some Chinese made 50 cal cans which are “ok”, judged a little thinner than the mil surplus.
The military surplus store I go to sells the 40mm cans $15 each and 81mm cans $5 each. I have 15 40mm cans and 10 81mm cans filled to the rim with ammo. Have to use a dolly to move them when they are full.
Just picked up a 40mm can at the local fair for $20 Iv been accumulating a lot of knives and ammunition lately and its gonna fit perfectly in my gun cabinet so I can organize my knives and ammunition in a safer more efficient way.. been searching for one like this for a few years now. So I was happy with the price I’m hoping to find a few smaller ones for in my truck and for the wife’s car to do just as you said and make a bug out box.. and have everything ready in an emergency situation or whatever happens with this upcoming election.. and just as a preparation and precaution for any future situation.. right now I have two medium sized wooden boxes in our vehicles with a few items that will come in handy in a situation where I may have to sleep in my vehicle or anything that may arise.. great video.. these things are worth every penny if you can find them in the size you’re looking for. And even if you can’t the smaller ones are perfect for range boxes or tool boxes really anything..
When it comes to storing ammo in the cans, is it better to store the bullets lose (greater quantity) or in the boxes? Lose really boosts the weight, what are your thoughts?
Really comes down to if you’re just wanting to stack as much as you can or if you have different kinds that you’re worried about organizing or keeping separate. Isn’t one that’s better than the other, just depends what you’re trying to do.
i use the 30cal cans in my shop to keep my screws and nails. i've left them out in the weather and there's no rust on anything on the inside. i wanna get a few of the 50cal cans for more stuff.
Excellent video as always Don! My first obsession (besides firearms) has to be bags & packs. The second is easily ammo cans and hardened containers. They compliment each other so well. In fact, I even have a dedicated storage crate for multiple ammo cans and various containers. It takes two decently strong individuals or at least four petite women to _easily_ carry it. But I find that compartmentalizing is just as important and addictive as the rest of it. What's more fun that opening a milsurp storage crate full of pelican boxes that have even more goodies inside each of them!? Or finding an old missile crate full of ammo spam cans that was buried under some boxes and rubble, most likely stored away and forgotten until needed. Now _that_ was an immovable item and it's probably why it remained there until I discovered it last year while helping my Father clean his shop. He does remember that it used to house his medals, coins and precious metals until he bought another safe. He's very sharp when it comes to the 2A inventory but can't recall purchasing the spam cans. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant surprise for both of us indeed! Keep up the great work my friend. EDITED for double spacing.
Be careful ordering ammo cans from Sportsmans Guide! I ordered 5, and one was shot up full of holes, and had old faded red paint covering it. It was UNUSABLE. Looked like it was used as a range yardage marker...

I'm looking for one to put away some First Aid stuff. I have a US ARMY medical First Aid or trauma kit. Its plastic, it's about 9 X 9 X 7" tall. It filled pretty quickly. Looking for something larger. Hope you'll mention it here. You did. Yep. I'm gonna go with the 25mm link belt can. At about 13lbs, its already pretty heavy. Love .30 and .50 cal steel ammo cans for bulk ammo storage. The .30 cal can fits 1000 rounds of 9mm perfectly.
Or, 2,649 rounds of .22. Three boxes of 550 Winchester white box, and tf three of the 333 count of their golden bullets. Tuck in nicely.

bingo! Im still laughing at the thought of this guy putting tiny rods through there and asking a fellow idiot to port it like a stretcher.

Just bought 30 cal. One today. They are nice to store all kinds of things.
I have some .40 mm ammo cans. 1 of them is completely full of 5.56 green tip 62 grain ammunition for my AR15. I cannot carry this ammo can by myself.
There is also a pa 157 on sportsman site witch is also a 81mm but taller and then of you go up to the 120mm from there
Neeeding a 40mm can for sure. I'll check it out on the website. Thanks!
Sportsman's guide had the larger one for about $17 on sale last year.. bought 2 myself... great for longer items.
i use the 30cal cans in my shop to keep my screws and nails. i've left them out in the weather and there's no rust on anything on the inside. i wanna get a few of the 50cal cans for more stuff.
Don't they rust anymore? In my experience, they are not suitable for long term storage in places with high humidity. Has that changed?
Wipe it down with a silicone rag when you get them and they’ll last a super long time.
1:45 I have had one of these for almost 30 years and never knew the lid came off!
They are a must have for gun stuff an Ammo. I have a lot of them for all my ammo Sootch00. As always long live the republic my friend.
I just bought 5 of the biggest ones u got there the mm round that holds 3 shells 21mm or 81mm cant remember
40mm can soon to be my faraday cage. Just need to remove paint at the seal and fabricate a conductive gasket.
The smaller ones are great for holding gold and silver! Thats what I use em for lol
They make an excellent Faraday cage. Just replace the rubber seal with aluminium/aluminium tape to get a good seal.
40MM or 25mm-linked Cans can be made into a portable tent stove with minimal work.
I've seen that done, they do work great as well.
I love old army surplus cans
u should do a review of your battle tested sandles--lol--stay comfortable sootch

Keep them in the spam cans. They keep the air out more reliably since they don't have a rubber seal to fail.
What are those channels on the side of the cans used for?
They're there to help keep the sides of the cans from bowing outward when filled with heavy stuff.

would they be legal to ship outside the US?
