I recently came across my grandfather's ammo box and have been wanting to get it restored but everyone I know says I should just pay someone to because it'll be a lot of work but this video showed me it's more satisfying to do so yourself. Thank you!
I applaud your efforts to refurbish this ammo can. You know you can buy the flat olive green paint to give it that exact same factory look. But nice either way. Thumbs Up!
Check out my latest video on a Raleigh Chopper bike restoration! Maybe another inspiration for you to restore an old bicycle laying around your backyard? haha
I have been given a number of rusted ammo cans that were so bad I sand blasted them and then treated the metal by soaking them in a watered down naval jelly for 24 to 48 hours then washed the can and repainted them with Rustoleum paint.
Hi my friend, ya I'm malaysian😊 let me know if there is more malaysian maker like me..wanna join the community..and nice to know there is malaysian liking restoration and handy content😊
The can should be painted in flat olive drab which is the standard color for ammo cans, the seal after washing and degreasing should be sprayed with a good silicone spray to keep the seal pliable
Nice job! I like your philosophy about giving objects a second life, and the Zen of doing this work. Much more gratifying than just buying a new one. What are the brushes you used? Are they brass? Bronze? They seem to cut quite well. Personally, I would have done a weak acid dip to remove rust deep in the pits, and finished with a paint like Aervoe or Gillespie Coatings, since they have true mil-spec colors. Still, an outstanding job. Keep it up.
Yea.. it's a personal achievement for myself..satisfied and gained new skills.. those are brass wire brush. Thanks for suggestion for mil-spec colours, will try to look for it..as I'm some detailing on my bike.. plan to give it an army style look
I enjoyed this :) if I can make a request (and possibly you already do this in your later videos), please even out the audio levels between the quiet sections and the noisier power tools! Thanks.
Thanks my friend! Glad to hear that! And thanks for the constructive suggestion, and yes, i have noticed the audio imperfection and did some work on that in the later videos 😁 thanks for paying attention to the details! Feel free to leave any comment in future videos as well 😁
It will costs me more to buy a new one in my area. And I don't want to just throw a very good box away while I need one. It's given by my uncle, so i wanna keep the story and value 😊

Army Green Spray paint 8. Yellow Spray paint (for the stencil) I guess that's all..hope i didnt miss out any 😊 wish you good luck!

Thanks for the comment! I take this as a hands-on practice for my further project 😊 I'm still looking for the answer how old is this can, anyone can help? As per the video description, August 2015 is a guess, anyone can help to verify?
Looks awfully pitted for something that is only 4 years old. Maybe the number refers to august 15 1980. Be carefull when sanding old army equipment: the paint may contain chromium-6 components, which can be harmfull.

It’s good but it doesn’t look restored it looks like a replica, should’ve taken more time to match the paints and got the stencil to be the same size as the original writing, very good but it’s lost its wow
The Y Maker didn’t know it was your first time, it’s excellent in that case and is great in itself. But the same still stands if you wanted it to keep that original authenticity that will wow your friends when they see it 🙂
The Y Maker for sure there’s improvement, I liked the hammer especially, kept it looking rustic, and the shears looked like they were fresh out the factory in the 40s I’d imagine anyway, keep up the good work, definitely got a new subscriber 👍🏻
You lost me when you sped up and shortened the video for scrubbing. That's the "asmr" part! Then you kept the harsh motor noises. More hand work, less machines please.
Do you have a problem with dialogue or your going to be like every person who has a youtube channel that doesn't speak, I don't like subtitles, if your not deaf than talk, by the way nice job and use liquid wrench lubrication for rusty everything
Don't take it wrongly. I don't speak because i prefer 'Do the talk'.. i watched youtube a lot as well and sometimes people just talked too much instead of showing the work, and it annoys me sometimes when people purposely creates some memes..so that's just my preferences 😊 thanks for the comment😁

Paint your stencil with a coat of green first, to seal the edges from bleeding. Then spray with yellow. The letters and numbers will be much sharper.
Thanks for the advice! Will take note next time! Appreciate that! 😁
@@theymaker125 AND, spray with several very light coats rather than heavy coats when doing stencils.
In general, true. But have you ever seen an ammo box with perfect stenciling? Neatness was not their strong point.
@@theymaker125 I'm doing somthing similar same looking but the writing on mine is different
@@keithjackson1180 At first I thought sloppy until I read your comment and you are right it's more realistic with the bleeds. Fortunate mistake.

Will do this with my dad's two ammo cans. He left that in our home before he died. Old and rusty. Glad i viewed this video.

You need to get a sand blaster for doing these projects. They work great for removing rust and paint.

Its metal putty
