I lucked out on my first ever analog camera purchase a long time ago. Not knowing jack shit about vintage cameras, I somehow scored an admittedly shitty body - coupled to a very decent Helios. Only until I got my first roll developed did I realize on what I stumbled upon and I was in love. I haven't taken many photographs on film for the last decade and my cameras are all in storage but if memory serves me right it's a 44-2, 58mm F2. Absolutely lovely bokeh, as everyone on the internet seems to agree.
@@jonytube yeah that's really all you hear about the Helios to be fair, I forget which factory mine came from but it's a pretty bad copy sadly. I sadly just don't end up in situations to bring out the Bokeh sadly. The Minolta-Rokkor 58 1.4 is my go to that I got for free from a friend of mine since some of the blades were being wacky. It's also funny that i've ended up with pretty much 4 lenses around the 50mm range lol
IKR?? I only just clicked it was him “I recently had the opportunity to go to Japan” HANG ON A MINUTE then seeing the deer and the toilet in quick succession and I was WHAT THE HELL 😂😂
i swore id seen him before, but i wasnt sure if it was from CT and went to his ig and theres nothing related to that, so i just started believing he had some camera loving doppelganger out there lmao
I know very little about photography. Even less about film photography. But I will watch every one of these you put out 😆. The pacing, jokes, backdrop changes, tone of delivery are just perfect. Love it
Thank you for being the only youtuber I've found that is actually funny and entertaining while talking about photography, can't wait to see the next vid
Best film photography channel going at the moment, it makes ypu feel like your in the in crowd and doesn't bother trying to over explain everything kind of if you know you know, andits so refreshing. So many channels out there focusing on on beginners
Okay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kislux book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
I know nothing about cameras and the only camera related channel I follow is Camera Conspiracies. So, I have no idea why I clicked on yours, but I am glad I did. I love your humor and even more I love the daft places you choose to film in/on. Subbed.
Didn’t expect that Buyee plug. It’s such an ebay killer. Bagged myself a near mint Canon P for only $127 last month, with another lens on the way. The prices are 2-3 times cheaper than ebay’s. There was even an M3 for $600. You’re literally one of the two channels I’ve seen plugging it.
Buyee is actually a solid alternative to Ebay. Lots of ebay sellers sell products off buyee and make a profit because of how cheap buyee is. Even with shipping fees, they still make a huge profit per item, and barely anyone who uses ebay knows of buyee's existence too so its ez for them to get away with it
Absolute insane presentation and what a rush and a laugh. Hooked already and it’s now a must watch channel. I thought I was a bit of a camera freak, but man, you are in a world of your own. This is like a Twilight Zone for camera nerds!
I'm so glad I found this channel, it does something most camera youtubers nowadays consistently fail to do - surprise me. And I really respect your dedication to vary filming locations.
Absolutely incredible review and hilarious, witty and informative commentary. This made me inspired and hopeful, for the future life of film photography and other photographic mediums, that capture a similar aesthetic. Thank you, honestly awesome video.
This is the first Graindead video I've seen and I'm totally hooked. I was just wondering if you guys or Graindead himself could recommend any camera thrift stores around Tokyo (or Osaka)?
I really love your taste and style always so chic. My faves would be the kislux leather backpack and the Swarovski pave diamond ring so gorg. Thank you for your recommendations.
Seeing this channel is a dream come true, I just found this out. I have followed you and the old car throttle guys for many years and I saw you one time with what looked like a Nikon F or similar silver SLR film camera in a car challange and I wondered if you had a film channel! I am a car freak but I also love film photography. You really seem to know your stuff about shooting film. I'm also subbed to all the gear lol. lots of love from canada Jack, excited for the future of this channel!!
I can't believe UA-cam algorithm hasn't guided me to this channel until now! Good to see you Jack geeking over some obsolete consumer electronics. I'm pretty sure I have one of those Konicas somewhere and I can attest that it indeed is a camera and a mildly interesting one If you're interested on mildly interesting cameras. Were there any Texas Leicas in the discount boxes?
FINALLY a new (to me) channel that tugs on my... interest strings... or something. Funny and highly watchable. Subscribed. Thanks. Looking forward to seeing more. Cheers
Glad to see another photographer giving the Samurai some credit, you’ve definitely made me wonder if I overpaid for mine over a year ago but I absolutely love it and have gotten some great use from it. It’s my go-to point-and-shoot since the half-frame nature of it means you can just bang away random shots whenever & wherever, and as you mentioned they were not fucking around with the lens on that thing, on some emulsions you can’t even tell it’s half-frame! Also I find it quite easy to use with one hand, however I have quite large hands and long fingers so that probably makes the difference there
Excellent scriptwriting, narration and content Jack. cheers mate. note, it’s common for used compacts to gobble the first roll, especially if film was taken out of the camera without rewinding it properly, and the film transport / counter gets outta sync
I’ve now caught up with all your videos.. looking forward to the bargain bucket finds and to the obscure and unique finds. Hope you continue doing these videos 📷
for some reason, other people opening up new cameras make me so happy, I always think that if I was them i'd already dropped the camera from excitement
I grew up being shot by the Chunkboi Bigshots, and can testify to it's durability. That thing survived being dropped from considerable heights, sandy beaches, and Swedish winters. My mom put it away and forgot about it after she managed to spill a whole can of coke over it, probably 15 years ago. Earlier this year I found it, disassembled it into as many pieces as possible, painstakingly cleaned it, somehow willed all the pieces back together, and now it shoots beautifully. The only "issue" being that my furious scrubbing removed some paint from the lens cover and revealed a glossy coat under the matte top coat.
I did something similar to your olympus find recently, only with minolta weathermatics. Note to everyone else, when picking cameras to repair don't go for ones that are designed to go *underwater*. Also holy shit, you bought my robo ace. Sorry about that. I think I know what's broken in it now though. If you're ever in London and want to shoot some other stupid and weird cameras let me know.
What the hell???? I’ve just realised I follow you on two totally different channels on totally different subjects. Yes I have facial blindness and only recognise people in a given context, but for months have been going “I know that voice/cadence from somewhere else” both here and ATG 😂😂😂
Just come across this channel, big fan of your work on car throttle and all the gear. Also a shooter and have a Genba myself which is great. Mines a 28mm
i got so scared when u got to the kyocera samurai cause i just thrifted one for about $15 and have yet to shoot it because of the broken battery door… and the fact that i don’t have any film sounds like it’s worth it though, so i’ll hold onto it, fix the door, and grab some film
Jack, it's you! I've watched you on all the car channels and now you also do film photography? I came back to film recently, so I'm happy to find you have similar interests. Subscribed!
I'm honestly not surprised that Kyocera Samurai half frame camera has such a good lens, considering they also made the entire Contax line of cameras post 1983 under license from Carl Zeiss.
great video, awesome discovering this channel after watching you on CT for some time, especially considering im a photographer and cameras are a huge part of my life just like cars
I've just subscribed to you channel, mainly for the great humour and secondly for the cameras. I simply can't bring myself to buy film only for it be wasted on a dud, so my second hand camera purchases are limited to digital ones
Haha awesome clip man, was wondering from the All The Gear videos if you were going to go camera mad over there. I'm in Japan in a couple of months again. That GameBoy Camera seems awfully cheap, I would've picked that up for sure. I was waiting for you to bitch about the soldered in battery in those Fuji DL's but maybe you haven't experienced that mess yet haha. Samurai's are rad little units, have a couple doing the classic dust gathering somewhere. Oh and if you ever shoot and develop that APS film, I'm one of the few remaining weirdos who has a scanner for it, thanks to my parents having piss poor film choices during my childhood.
That was very interesting. I would be curious to see if it's possible to shoot APS film today. Sadly I have a few APS cameras - I kind of had to as the first camera I bought when I left home was an APS point and shoot that I never developed the roll from. I really love how I got into phtography in my 40's and was pretty much afraid of cameras until then.
Everyone loves when I point out Helios lenses in movies I swear
That clip killed me 💀
its even funnier cause thats the one lens that i literally NEVER USE

You could straight-up nullify the cost of your trip by smuggling thrift store cameras back to Europe.
🤫 shhhh don’t tell them!
stop don't encourage the resellers anymore 😭
Being a car and camera person, seeing jack in the CT/ AA / ATG / TDC videos , this channel is so cool

I only just clicked it was him

This was such a treat to watch. The Samurai part made me full on laugh out loud (lowfat cake).

"For parts bin" in Japan , aka " camera that works". I wish it would be the same in Europe 😅
