I am listening to Derek's series and it is fantastic! I am very encouraged by his commentary on the book. God bless this man and his passion for Bunyan's classic.
I had experiences similar to Pilgrim. I do not believe the burden coming off was the moment he was converted, but instead the moment he was assured of it which freed him from his guilt. But I may be wrong
Yes, I agree, my burden came off and my willingness to obey Him came about 17 years after I started believing, or maybe He hadn't saved me but He sure put me on the narrow road since then, although He allowed me to fall into gross sin, to break my pride I suppose, He has now taken all from me and has left me broken and willing to follow Him wherever He will take me, including suffering the consequences of my actions

@@dennisboyd1712 The only thing you can back up from that statement is that the KJV sounds like Shakespeare. The KJV authors put in their own preface that they didn’t want the kjv to be the final translation. It also doesn’t help that the majority of people who read the kjv don’t even understand the words and need translations to help them make sense of it.

I think Pilgrim's Progress is for Christians who move with God's voice rather than simply getting saved and waiting for Christ or death or whichever comes first...
Bunyan's "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners" is his real autobiography and describes his arduous conversion and subsequent doubts. He thought he'd committed the unpardonable sin. He thought he was Esau and could not repent. He thought all of the scary warnings in Hebrews applied to him. Turns out, he was suffering with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I'm sorry to say I've been through the same experience and it isn't one I'd wish on my worst enemy.
John actually wanted to be in jail to have peace to write his book … ( according what I read ) and yes John loved his wife … amazing relationship but she died and he was devastated ( he remembered his mother s death and his sister ) but eventually he married …
Does anyone have a source for the César Malan quote about "“Some of god's children are awakened like a mother awakens her children from their sleep with a kiss.” ? I'd love this and would really like to find it.
We are justified by faith, and with that faith comes obedience to God and our good works flow from that. It is only by faith that we then trust in God and he can use us for His glory.
Pilgrim's Progress, despite being an important work of Protestant literature, is fundamentally incompatible with "Faith Alone." Not only is Part 1 incompatible because of the heavy burden, but Part 2 is incompatible as well. The reason is because Christiana and her party are presented with many dangers and choices AFTER they are converted, which if they failed to overcome, they would not be saved. In which case, they do need more than faith alone -- they also need to endure to the end, which is more than faith alone. "Faith Alone" just does not work, because as James says, "Faith without works is dead, being alone."
He got in trouble for not teaching Faith alone but the only time in the entire Bible the phrase “Faith alone” is found is in James 2 when James Jesus’ brother let’s us know that it is never alone and if it is, IT IS DEAD and won’t save anyone. Without Holiness NO ONE WILL SEE THE LORD! REPENT! And believe the holy gospel

I’m not good enough for the love of Jesus. The things I’ve done cannot be forgiven
Brother, NO ONE is good enough for the love of Jesus. He loves us because of who He is, not because we are worthy.

No one is deserving … anyone can come to Christ We all come in humility and repent and baptized … become new in Christ. He died for all our sins

Its just so sad that evangelists isnt the evangelist of today
Sadly True, as History & Literature with any color of Christianity hold no interest of today's educators.
I have shared with brethren how little pastors speak about Bunyan … in this dark times is a number one book besides the Bible’s …GOSPEL MESSAGE …
The funny thing is that Jesus never taught justification by faith alone. Neither did John the Baptist. Neither did the Apostles.
We are justified by faith, and with that faith comes obedience to God and our good works flow from that. It is only by faith that we then trust in God and he can use us for His glory.
