The uneducated son of a tinker, Bunyan survived the horrific English Civil War only to be jailed during an era of great religious persecution. From his jail cell Bunyan wrote his great allegory of the Christian life. when I was a child in junior school, we had this read to us. sadly, I don't think they do this any more. When i reached adulthood, I began to realize the importance of this work...Its not about a once and for all journey, but about the soul journey on the pathway of life...in other words, we get to the Celestial City. HOW EVER LONG IT TAKES...and over the many experiences of many life times...Well...Thats how I see it anyway....It would be nice to hear from anyone of you out there....

I have not yet read Pilgrims Progress, but I want to. I do not believe that we have many lifetimes, dear brother. The Word of God says in Hebrews 9 : 27, " It is appointed unto men once to die, and then the judgement."
Not many lifetimes, but your spiritual development certainly continues after you die.

Fifty one years ago as a child of ten my father introduced me to two books that outside of the Bible would impact my life. One was "Streams in the desert" and the other "Pilgrim's progress". He always pointed me in the right direction, Jesus Christ.
So wonderful to know that God uses all means to draw hearts to Him!
Those are two of my favorite books. I read Pilgrim's Progress yearly and Streams in the Desert every other year.

I'm sorry that you have had such experiences. Unfortunately, many who have the name of Christian are not truly born again and are not changed and made holy by God's own Spirit. Are you born again? Have you repented of your sins and trusted in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins? Christians are not perfect but they are being conformed to the image of Christ. There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we are saved. Only through Jesus Christ can you know God and have eternal life. Come to Christ today, friend.

I have found Bunions writings for the first time at the end of last year when this was posted, ironically. I had heard of him, but never knew anything about him other than he wrote religious stories. His writings are truly a strength of simplicity, to which all may understand. Praise the Lord and his servant Bunion. Amen

John Bunyan, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, George McDonald. These are the men I look up to the most. Im a woman and yet I feel a sort of kinship with these brave men who spoke truth through storytelling. I hope to carry on that legacy through my works and be a storyteller for Christ and Christ alone. May it be God's will. ❤

This is so timely! I am currently listening for to the Pilgrims progress! ❤️💕✝️🙏
They have a couple adaptations of it here on UA-cam. :) A church did a crazy rock version of it, but still keeps to the main theme. It is in rhyme. Then there is another a church that did one. Then the Hellywood version with Liam Neeson of all people. Still true to the book from what i remember. Lastly there is a cartoon version and the recent computer version(which i hated).
One of those books that look so dull on the bookshelf when you’re young, but all of a sudden you pick it up in adulthood as a Christian and you are astonished at its brilliance and can’t put it down

I first read the Christian Pilgrim thirty years ago as a teenager in the college.
It was a living story in my memory and has remained so that l introduced it to my Children.

It is wonderful to see that in seasons of despair, seclusion, aloneness in the wilderness, God’s Work continues with extraordinary outcomes. Just like John, the apostle, when he was imprisoned at Patmos Island, that was when he wrote the Book of Revelation. It is never in vain to suffer in this temporary world for the sake of Christ. There is eternal life and that’s the life that we want. That life has no end and our ultimate goal as Born-Again Christians.
England is such a beautiful country. So many God fearing men have been born out of this country, John Wesley, John Bunyon, William Tyndale are examples of true soldiers of Christ. Thanks be to God.

They make it sound almost dramatic but it would have been brutal and he would have well felt tormented spiritually during the imprisonment

My parents read Pilgrim’s Progress to myself and siblings when we were young. When I first visited the UK in 2008 I visited the JB museum and church. It made such an impression; was wonderful seeing Bedford again in this film.

The video of Pilgrim's Progress from England done in the 1960s or 70s in my UA-cam channel collection that begins with Christian's wife and friend in her house, deciding if they would join Christian on his journey, has been deleted. A cool documentary and very timely for today
John Bunyan followed Christ to the letter. Christ first last and always and everyone else second and third etc. He is resting in peace awaiting our Lord Jesus Christ's second coming. There will be joy in the morning indeed for him and many of God's children.

John Bunyan was influential to Louisa May Alcott and her sisters, thus influencing the novel Little Women, that was, in its day, a better seller than any book except the Bible. And how did Louisa May Alcott, second daughter of a transcendentalist, come by her writing talent? Her dad was best buddies with Ralph Waldo Emerson, so likely there was some influence.

Laws concerning prison sure have changed a lot since John Bunyan was in one, talk about prison reform in our time we pay for confinement with our taxes where in their time they paid to be in jail.
Maybe this idea to make people convicted of crimes to pay for incarceration would curb crime if you could be sure they had actually did it.

I have not read the book in a long time but the movie version is incorrect and also the Pilgrim was not baptized in the water and therefore his heavy burden would still be there and he would not have reached his destination. See Acts 2 38. Hebrews 10 22. John 3 5. Acts 22 16. Mark 16 16. Acts 8 12. And about 100 other scripture pertaining to the importance of Baptism. And by the way do not just choose one or two scripture to interpret separately as you wish as an excuse when 100 other scripture say to be baptized in the water into the love of Jesus as only he can lift the heavy load and guilt off of you.
David not Solomon...What an interesting young man...!...The number of 'lifetimes' really depends on us, and our earthly circumstances, and of course 'free will' as to how many life experiences we must endure to learn the lessons of tolerance, kindness, love, etc.....Developing souls of course, 'bring back' with them wonderful gifts...The ability for new discoveries in Physics, chemistry, music, medicine astronomy and engineering...etc....Perhaps we might understand more from the biography of people like Edgar Cayce and the soul journey....This virus we are having to deal with at the moment, a hundred years ago would have 'wiped out' millions more that it has, but for modern discoveries. In any event, this soul journey, however long for me, is the pathway to the 'Celestial City Bunyan wrote so eloquently about. Timothy Noble, I'm afraid that interpretation goes against the biblical teaching concerning mankind's existence. Physically, humans live once, and die once. To live spiritually, one must choose to receive Christ as Saviour and Lord of the life. This begins with conversion, "being born again." That is what Jesus was sharing with Nicodemus. Without that born again, transforming experience we cannot see God because it would be totally impossible to make it to heaven. John 3:3 " Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto Thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
2 Corinthians 5: 17 says: If any man (woman) be in Christ, he/she is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new."
So that's conversion, the new birth. Afterwards we grow as a Christian by prayer, Bible Study, and sharing our faith with others. We live the life of a follower of Christ, a holy, sanctified, life, for we are to "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." Hebrews 12:14
If a man chooses not to become a born again Christian, then he is by default choosing to follow Satan, and die a second time. He dies physically, then he will die spiritually also by being burned up in the fire which is prepared for Satan and his angels. Because he did not believe God's word enough to prepare for heaven he will not be able to go to heaven. The God news is that he won't burn forever and ever as is commonly taught. He will burn untill he is consumed, just as a log in a woodstove burns and is consumed leaving only ashes.
Isaiah 1:28 "And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed."
And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them." Verse 31. (Tow is the coarse part of flax, separated from the finer part)
"For behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts. Malachi 4:1,3
The righteous will go to heaven. The wicked will be burned up by the same fire that cleanses and purifies the earth where the saved will eventually live forever and ever, amen. I hope this helps to clarify things for you. Blessings!

The way I understand it the one called Faithful is the true Christian in the book Pilgrim s Progress and the one called Christian in this book is the deceiver and a wolf in sheep s clothing. By the way John Bunyan was baptized by full immersion as an adult in the water as scripture commands. As a pastor he was thrown in jail numerous times for refusing to practice or preach any Catholic or Ecumenical beliefs at his church.
The pilgrims progress book is for every Christian. The character named " Christian " is you and me yes all who believe in Christ and desire to be godly. The characters named " Faithful " and "Hope" are the characters of Christ His Holy Spirit. There is no one faithful and no one who gives Hope other than the Lord. So what you are actually missing to understand in the story is that Christ is faithful and He gives us the glorious Hope and will never leave us nor forsake even if we fall down , He lifts us up.

I b elieve I've read all the works of Bunyan available, and the Pilgrims Progress maybe 50 times, I'm reading it now, AND STILL FINDING NEW THINGS to meditate on, O, that our planet had many Bunyans doing our Lords' bidding.

Sin is not a problem to the believer. Its the difficulty to surrender every area of ones life to follow Jesus Christ. To forsake dreams, worldly success, financial freedom, personal comforts, things we wish to obtain for the sake of our kids which we never had and etc. None of these things are evil, but good, yet somehow setting our minds on these things and following after them hinders our spiritual walk, weighs heavy on us and it eventually ends up in discouragement, doubtful delusions of whether its worth it, over the top feelings to return to the thrown of ones own life and so on. This causes the weakness responsible for us giving in to sin for the sense of gratification. Jesus talks about forsaking, and i think i understand why. Grace and peace be all who love our Lord.
Genesis 3:15

Those words he said about decades of religious and political tensions sound a like a fulfilling of what is written in Genesis 3:15 about God putting enmity between the devil and Eve the woman. Of course that verse has been happening in the world before and after the Old Covenant of the ten commandments began along with the New Covenant of God's Grace something that has abounded since the fall of mankind happened in the garden of Eden.
