A common pattern with my videos is that they ALWAYS perform better on UA-cam shorts than on Instagram. UA-cam pushes my content to a wider audience, and you can tell the algorithm is really testing different viewers throughout like a 1 week period from posting. While on Instagram, the first 24-48hrs are when the algorithm decides if it's promoting your content or not, and it just dies after that. But my content doesn't reach most of my followers on Instagram, which is very confusing and a common experience from what I've heard. @@LlamaSticksseems like everyone was hoping this podcast would be an absolute grilling of the CEO. It’s a ridiculous expectation, this podcast isn’t going to be the reason Instagram changed their ways
You guys should do a TikTok vs IG comparison video. TikTok Live is better than IG Live. TikTok comments section is better. Reposting and watermarking (crediting) is better. Then of course the recommendations algorithm is better. None of these things are new to IG but TikTok has somehow jumped way ahead and for some reason IG feels so stagnant. TikTok sucks at notifications though lol for some reason.
When Adam says IG prioritizes Creators over Publishers, does that mean a Creator shouldn't update their personal account to a business account? How does IG know who is a Publisher vs a Creator account? If I'm starting a new brand, should I keep my IG as a personal account instead of a business account?
Yes make it a creator account instead of business account when you switch to professional account, not just saying this in thin air, have tried and tested this for many accounts and found that creator account gets the maximum reach from the get go
Look Instagram is a platform for reach to grow your business model. This is why it’s important to have a business model and not do Instagram for revenue share, same with UA-cam it’s the business model. The upside to high engagement and reach is sponsorship & ad share. His made it clear, they are trying to create a sustained model. Knowing business I respect his answer.
Instagram is odd to me. I hear it mentioned so much more from friends my age than TikTok. But I have way more success with TikTok and UA-cam. I have videos will do millions of views on shorts and TikTok but they don’t get hardly any traction on insta. Great interview tho. He speaks a lot more freely about their weaknesses than I thought I would hear about.
If the demand from consumers was there, then IG would still be a see-photos-from-friends app. They’ve pivoted to remain relevant and because reel/story content is where the societal demand is.
Solution i found is having 2 accounts One where i follow friends/family only One where i follow all the rest Helps in a lot of ways (less screen time if you want to, less fatigue when checking the app...)
At 52:30 I completely agree that big names are overpaid and I think we are really seeing success from sponsoring smaller creators. Marc Jacob’s recent ad campaign is a perfect example of this where they are sponsoring smaller weird creators and the level of engagement I’ve seen is crazy
Even if creators with 2k followers may not be eligible for monetization, knowing that Instagram could have a revenue share like UA-cam, would help creators that have smaller following to keep creating original authentic content on the platform to shoot for monetization.
10:50 - Sends per Reach (Shares Per Reach) 13:15 - Shares (most important metric) 14:50 - Watchtime - matters a lot less than Sends (Shares) 15:00 - Connected vs Unconnected Reach ~~~ Percentage of Reach that Already follow V.S. NOT following 17:05 - What Metrics Matter In Each Section (Reels, Feed, Explore) 19:09 - How important are follower counts? 20:52 - IMMEDIATE Shares is a good indication for virality
Continuing to watch but I'm wondering (and am doubtful) if more challenging questions are brought up. The elephant in the room has to be engagement based on negativity though I suppose it is somewhat outside of the scope of a channel like this to explore. Rage bait and controversial topics for the sake of being controversial to illicit an emotional response and drive engagement that way. This is an enormous part of Instagram. I'd be very curious to see what the head of Instagram has to say about that.
Exactly! So because they do something wrong on purpose and thousands of teens and/or idiots comment on that, it gets pushed to all our feeds. They also don't talk about how negative comments are driving more views, so there is a whole new genre of reels that are just for the purpose of people opening the comments to confirm they are not crazy and this video is in fact absurd.
Adam kept mentioning “ connecting friends and short form videos”. I think there is a huge caveat in comparing long form videos, short form videos and connecting friends. For example, short form videos works fantastic for connecting friends if you have ones to begin with. If you have a great friend to share things with short form content works great because you both (ideally) are interested in the topic of the short video. That said, we might not have become a part of a thing or fans of it. It might be oh cool trick or whatever. However, for long form video, I feel it has a lot more potential for community building to your point. I know this has been brought up in your interviews before of people walking up to content creators like they personally know them! I don’t know if that would happen to a content on Instagram. I might follow someone on Instagram, absolutely. But I wouldn’t “know them” as well as I would if I am following them on UA-cam!
This is the puzzle that is haunting me about youtube. They have owned the long form space for over a decade, and yet not a single viable tool for community building around it. Why?...
“About 50% of content is viewed with sound off”. A lot of people crazily like like like like umpteen posts on accounts - and we see this in Stories when people will screenshot this like it’s something to be super proud of. I’m suggesting they’ve got the sound off while hyper doing this. Tell me I’m wrong Mr Mosseri?
would love if instagram gave more info on our audience and followers. On youtube we can see what subs are searching for, who they watch, what they like. On instagram its hard to know what your followers really want. even if you do a poll, you are only polling the small percent who watched that story.
Y’all need to push big names like this more, and respectfully don’t take the sidestepping. You’re big enough to do this, as well as good enough to. Next step after that is leading the conversation based on what creators are seeking (truly). You can see it in the comments. Instagram continues to take 100% of what’s available off creators backs. This didn’t help the community in any way, it didn’t hurt, but it was a pointless interview.
Was pleasantly surprised by this - I only knew Adam from quick update vids and wasn't a big fan. But this felt like a pretty good assessment of IG's strengths, weaknesses, and direction. Realizing now that he's kinda chill, and I probably was just hating on IG's direction. Also... if you're on the fence, this is probably the only convo you need to hear as a creator to realize that your time might be better spent growing on UA-cam right now lol
As of March 14th of this year I became an official UA-camr and as of April 27th I left Instagram. It is so hard to make money on both of them at the same time. And I don’t want to divide my energy. It’s great for selling products yet I am not selling any products or services.
half of the stories i see on Instagram are ads, i feel there is a possibility to share some of that with people. i kinda stopped uploading on youtube when they said you can't get paid because you are not good enough but we will show ads on your videos.
@@mystrmn4658 to be honest it is 13k on a video (i don't count a short that has 37k before youtube even though short memes could even exist). this channel was montized for a few months before youtube decided to put 1000k subs for monetization. i earned an incredible amount of 9$ in that period. it is still getting 7-8k views a year and i didn't upload for 4 years. it has around 200k views. never wanted to be a famous youtuber. but youtube sharing few cents every time they show an ad on my video would be nice of them (and they do show ads on them).

Adam is a breath of fresh air. I appreciate how honest he is about Instagram’s strengths and weaknesses, as well their competitors. Lotta insight packed in here
I think the insights this video provides about what instagram is looking for is valuable to creators/businesses using the platform. Creators who listen to what Adam is saying they are prioritizing and adapt their content will see better results. Thanks guys!
1:22:40 The next big thing in social media Why not add a collective feed in which I can share the same feed with friends, this way its easier to share because think about, it people only share a video if it is exceptional good. And with a feed I share with friends or family it gets "directly" shared which enables more people spending together on the app which will result in engaging about the videos perhaps through a form of dm/comments with friends. Now 98% of the videos I watch I never talk about with friends cause I do not know if they are interested and with a shared feed they automaticaly get the video seen and know it also interest them because they feed is also made for them. add thoughts/improvements about this in reactions
Great idea with one caveat - there is always that one friend or relative who over-shares annoying crap , be it not funny army of "jokes" or political fear mongering and etc. Kicking that person out of acustom.feed is as socially painful as deleting y Them from a group chat 😢
One day soon, there will be a real organic sharing platform, non profit, no expectations, that you can connect with other amazing souls around the world sharing your passions and supporting each other in a positive way. All the social media apps are businesses (is ok of course) but the energy real creators/artists need to put here to make some noise, is EXHAUSTING. All the energy and time you put in creating material and learning all this TECH nonses stuff, KILLS the creativity. Creativity and the art created heals the person and the people that connects, and we need this more than ever in this chaotic world. The addiction to short videos (I fall in this some times) is also a creativity and productivity KILLER. There is no guidance or training before diving into the hand tv and social media apps. Most of the new people now is in a devotion mode, give energy, time, put money, hope, dreams, to be heard/watched by the new "god" wishing to become famous, wealthy, or bring the message. Sounds like a new religion. Be wise and manage your energies. Best wishes to all positive creators here! Thank you Colin and Samir!
I'm fascinated by the disconnect of what seems like genuine passion and intelligent design from this guy who leads the company to the increasingly disappointing actual policy and features of the app
I always feel like Mosseri has no idea how much he's annoyed us all. My entire feed is just feature accounts of stolen content that I don't even follow. Instagram doesn't show me people I know, it just advertises strangers at me.
The answer to figuring out the “reach” Issue is pretty bloody simple. Start with showing content to people that choose to follow said account. Then use your recommendation algorithm depending on how the post is interacted with across every follower. But start with showing it to every one that chooses to follow that account. I think that’s a pretty simple starting spot.
The fact these boys talked about images for a total of 10 seconds in a discussion about the world's largest image sharing social media app, should tell you everything you need to know.

How is the program supposed to know or moderate between that if that’s different between individuals? Parents cannot offload complete responsibility to these platforms, especially when the platforms are limited from collecting that kind of information since it falls under health data.
Can’t help but think about how he looks like DAVID WALLACE FROM THE OFFICE
YES! THEY EVEN HAVE SIMILAR MANNIERISMS
😄
Colin and Samir dropping softballs to their guests so they can keep on rolling with this trend of podcasts becoming a platform for self-promotion
What kind of questions were you hoping they would ask out of curiosity?
@@LlamaSticks why have you turned your app into a flaming pile of garbage?
@@LlamaSticksseems like everyone was hoping this podcast would be an absolute grilling of the CEO. It’s a ridiculous expectation, this podcast isn’t going to be the reason Instagram changed their ways
I hate instagram customer service. All automated and you can’t get in contact with a real person to help you with hacked account.
Same applies to Linkedin. They just ask to fill a form. No direct conversation.
They used to have it but removed it early last year
he forgot to mention about how they turn off comments on their official yt videos, so that they aint exposed by people
You guys should do a TikTok vs IG comparison video.
This is a true masterclass in modern sociology, consumer behavior, and target audiences!
I appreciate the interview. Too bad the monetization question was answered with a big "we don't know yet".
Maybe you didn’t hear him say “yes we monetize, all the money goes in our pocket” 😂
I enjoyed this conversation. I think the insight about shares being one of the best points to look for in the analytics is gold.
Instagram has become a creator and marketing app vs the seeing what your friends are doing. Can they recover from this?
Agreed, but the question is: do they want to? I think they opened the door for advertising and they are now beholden to shareholders
If the demand from consumers was there, then IG would still be a see-photos-from-friends app. They’ve pivoted to remain relevant and because reel/story content is where the societal demand is.
Solution i found is having 2 accounts
One where i follow friends/family only
One where i follow all the rest
Helps in a lot of ways (less screen time if you want to, less fatigue when checking the app...)
Are you willing to pay a subscription fee though?
I made an app that tries to fill this void, could you please let me know what you think about it? It's called VibeStir
Great timing. I am just starting to focus more on Instagram cause UA-cam is going great but IG not so much haha. Incredible video tbh
Surprised Instagram doesn’t pay creators like UA-cam does.
Well it is their way to operate. They don't care and that's all
@@LuisGomes. yeah it seems creators keep creating so it’s not affecting bottom line yet
ig and fb dont care about creators just ads
ig is one of the most used apps, but also the most hated. idk why kids like it so much, its laggy when u chat
Que massa! Conteúdo de auto valor e traduzido! Obrigado 🤯
The funniest thing for me is the the head of Instagram calling X "Twitter" around the 22:50 min Mark. Everyone really just still calls it Twitter.
Glad to know the CEO of Instagram is an actual human being
10:50 - Sends per Reach (Shares Per Reach)
13:15 - Shares (most important metric)
14:50 - Watchtime - matters a lot less than Sends (Shares)
15:00 - Connected vs Unconnected Reach ~~~ Percentage of Reach that Already follow V.S. NOT following
17:05 - What Metrics Matter In Each Section (Reels, Feed, Explore)
19:09 - How important are follower counts?
20:52 - IMMEDIATE Shares is a good indication for virality
It was refreshing to hear someone say, let's come back to that because I don't want it to seem like I'm skirting the question. I respect that
37:30 The only reason I dropped Instagram like a hot rock is the lack of rev share.
Gotta give huge love to you guys and the team for the amazing intros. They always hook me 😂
Thanks!
Oh, this is going to be a good one.
What a great podcast! I'm glad UA-cam recommended your channel to me! Greetings from Mexico!
Exactly, such a negative outcome that could be easily avoided. ua-cam.com/video/y8reZyT25xA/v-deo.htmlsi=aZ8N_8ao5PyJDmIB
Genial contenido muchachos, excelente datos sobre Meta e IG, saludos des de el Sur de Chile ✌🏻😎🇨🇱 donde comienza la Patagonia.
Oh man, I love this format and this interview! Thanks guys!
This is why UA-cam is the most important platform for creators now. Especially after the monetization talk.
Thanks for sharing! This really resonates with the challenges we face in the industry.
10:33 u forgot the part where they shadow ban u from ur own followers?
As of March 14th of this year I became an official UA-camr and as of April 27th I left Instagram. It is so hard to make money on both of them at the same time. And I don’t want to divide my energy. It’s great for selling products yet I am not selling any products or services.
This is literally the most valuable creator conversation on YT rn-for real. Thanks C&S!
Exactly! There’s not really many interviews with the head of instagram!
What a great, info packed conversation. Love how this guy expresses his thoughts. Want to hear more!
half of the stories i see on Instagram are ads, i feel there is a possibility to share some of that with people. i kinda stopped uploading on youtube when they said you can't get paid because you are not good enough but we will show ads on your videos.
Your most viewed videos have 1k views do you honestly think its reasonable to get payed for that.
At first glance I thought the title was "The man who RUINS Instagram".
wouldn't have been wrong
I haven’t enjoyed a podcast like this one for so long!! Thanks 🎉❤
"The Rayban Meta video got 60M views"... You don't say 🔎
Creators don’t care about revenue. LOL
Instagram says that so that they can take all of the revenue 😂
I got my IG & Facebook accounts disabled because of their AI doing a mistake, so, Tik Tok & UA-cam is where its at
Enjoyed this a ton! I think it’s interesting we have moved to a more “interest based” online world than “Social based.”
मैं विश्वास नहीं कर सकता कि वे यहाँ क्या पढ़ाते हैं लेकिन आपका बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद!!!

All very fascinating! Thanks for it
You’d think we would be cheap if we sent you 12 dollars, so we don’t send you anything.
Yeah, that definitely makes me not think you’re cheap 😂😂😂
By reading the comments 100% of us CARE ABOUT THE MONEY 🤣
I wish Instagram would build a good system around monetization for creators, it seems they want to do that but haven’t cracked the code
Somehow this guys vibe and the current downfall / landscape of Instagram correlate
its crazy how they make the metric to grow casually the absolute hardest thing to get. Not everybody has friends that they can send their favorite content to... Doesnt make the content any less valid.
“The man runs Instagram “ i think we missed a “I” in “runs”
I love that he says Twitter still
I personally hate how addicted to the internet I am, but this was a really interesting listen!😁
Great video, I found it amazing!
New Sub From Kenya, Love the Content!
super cool you guys got him on your channel, this was a hella relevant convo
thanks for sharing an amazing episode!
this is a dope convo 🙌 thanks guys!
The comments did not disappoint. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
1:22:40 The next big thing in social media
Why not add a collective feed in which I can share the same feed with friends, this way its easier to share because think about, it people only share a video if it is exceptional good.
Kicking that person out of acustom.feed is as socially painful as deleting y

That was fun, thanks guys for bringing him on and having such an honest, open, and flowing conversation. pros at interviewing people
Parabéns pela dublagem! Ideia que parece óbvia, mas como é o ditado, o óbvio precisa ser dito. Ou 'feito'. Parabéns, ótimo conteúdo.
Tbh he looks more like a snapchat ceo because I feel like he actually has big eyes and they stick out I feel
This was absolutely excellent
Fabulous interview/chat!! I bet creators are tough to keep happy! Adam is awesome! So interesting!! Live your channel!! Thanks so much!!
Love this episode ❤
No te puedo creer lo que enseñan aquí!, pero muchisisimas gracias!!!
if a company wants my video to be an ad, i need to be paid for that as the content creator. just allowing that on IG is not ok through creator ads
Enjoyed the conversation
I'm fascinated by the disconnect of what seems like genuine passion and intelligent design from this guy who leads the company to the increasingly disappointing actual policy and features of the app
Good info. Alot easier to use the platform when you know how to use it
I love how he is just extremely chill with the criticism
I always feel like Mosseri has no idea how much he's annoyed us all. My entire feed is just feature accounts of stolen content that I don't even follow. Instagram doesn't show me people I know, it just advertises strangers at me.
I miss UA-cam’s DM feature, it was the best way to send videos to my friend 😢
Tell him to let us pause reels! Also, where is the activity center.
The answer to figuring out the “reach”
Issue is pretty bloody simple. Start with showing content to people that choose to follow said account. Then use your recommendation algorithm depending on how the post is interacted with across every follower. But start with showing it to every one that chooses to follow that account. I think that’s a pretty simple starting spot.
there couldn’t be a better guy than adam to lead insta. he’s really smart and well-spoken
9:45 if utube didnt removed dm chats back in the days, nobody would really use fb or ig or tiktok or anything
