I rarely engage online, but this interview was incredibly insightful, full of great advice, offered new perspective - a truly fantastic episode. I'll be rewatching this for years to come.
This was brilliant. One point I will challenge from personal experience is the prediction by these 2 guys that don’t have kids that being a parent makes you less likely to succeed. I found the opposite to be true. All of my success happened after my first kid was born, when I was 28. The experience of fatherhood boosted my focus, motivation, resilience and stamina levels more than I could have imagined. Don’t resist having kids because you think it will make you less productive. That’s a fallacy.
Agreed-with an asterisk. There will be trade-offs, compromises, and lots of juggling. Multiplied, if you are a single parent, or if you do not have an equitable parenting-partnership with your spouse/partner, and/or if you are in financial need. It can work, if you are driven, totally on board for the 24/7 responsibilities, and have help. The “networking” for the startup translates to “family/community” for the children. You will need a team as a founder and another team as a parent, with a lot of support and help from both teams.
@susanjames4226came to say this! If he's working hard, who has the child? It's seems much easier to focus on work when you're out of the house and away from a child who requires care. Having a child impacts the success of the primary carer
He should have prefaced the "work nonstop except for dinner" argument with, "they get shares in the company for their work"... its a CEOs job to work like a slave IF they are the ones who receive the profit. I think most people would happily work super hard if they have a decent investment in the company.
@@Kroll-2 there would be no more nursing shortages if overtime wasn't taxed. people would be lining up to fill in holes in the schedule. If strong enough to do 18hrs every day, a family would need only one income provider, instead of two. But, then they'll do away with PTO time : corporations strongly disapprove of employees who actually seek to use it.
These people don’t know that we already have the answer that Trump only took his plane once from New York to West Palm, and then disassociated himself with him when he found out what he was up to. I can’t believe they don’t know. TDS is very real and very scary.
@@pb25193 The most hilarious part Trump is also on the Diddy List. You got to remember they both peaking around the early to mid 2000s. They wanted to endorse each other for the claut.
I was also born in Palo Alto and grew up in deliriously happy company with other gifted kids. We did not know we were different and the commercial world of adults outside was a bit of a shock during coming of age years. He is right about networking . Our 50th High School reunion was two months ago. We are still connected, share ideas and help each other. Some made billions, some raised super star kids, many of us started businesses, wrote books, got PhDs, law degrees. or MDs. It did not hurt that 60% of the kids were identified as gifted. The culture of exploration, curiosity, problem solving ,creativity and mutual respect was a great launch pad. Greatest moment, when my teen applied for three patents in underwater instrumentation engineering and they were granted.
@@cristina8868 You are quite right about America's neglect of most of its school children. I spent 30 years (my second career) as a resource specialist in rural school districts . In terms of my history ,in fact , I was dead center for the bunch of kids I went K-12 with. Many had IQs of 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100,000 range. That kind of brain power is mostly genetic (It was the Stanford faculty ghetto) . A case in point, my long term partner ,who grew up dirt poor in a cow town, then against predictions , he rose to the top of the world in computer science and chemical engineering. He got an education by cutting wood and sleeping on relatives couches at the University of TN. By grad school major universities were fighting over who got to pay his way. Most kids need the foundation of a good home environment ,nutrition, an absence of major trauma and a supportive school/community environment. He had none of these things. Most of the gifted kids I worked with in poor rural schools tended to, post high school ,disappear into the general population. This including the one with the highest IQ scores I have ever seen. His parents were junkies and there is no chance he got an enriched environment there. High achievement is all about the mix of environment, genetics and the opportunity to develop .It is a great tragedy that we waste the potential of kids across all abilities ranges by underfunding schools and social safety nets for their families.
Stephen, Your interviews on The Diary of a CEO are nothing short of brilliant-insightful questions, expertly chosen guests, and topics that truly resonate. However, as a devoted listener over 55, I’ve noticed that many of the questions you ask your guests seem to be geared toward younger audiences. What about those of us entrepreneurs who are older and still hungry for growth, inspiration, and impact? We, too, are navigating pivotal moments in our lives and careers and would love to be considered in the narratives you explore. Your content is already exceptional, but adding perspectives that speak to a wider age range could make it even more powerful. Just a thought from one of your biggest fans! Cheers, Bozzie from Bastrop, Louisiana
those of you who are older enterprenuers, don't really need the adivce. You already have everything you basically set your sights on. Young people meanwhile have nothing
@@impostorsyndrome1350 not necessarily. Some people seek out new ventures when they're older. Colonel Sanders was...67(?) when he started his rise. Harrison Ford was 37 when he starred in his first major role in Hollywood. Many hit it big only when they get older. We're all in this together brothers and sisters.
As an entrepreneur and a strategist who advises startups and grownup brands, this interview was such a delight! That’s not a word I would’ve expected to use, but I definitely experienced delightful moments that surprised me in this interview. And I now plan to check out Reid‘s new books and revisit 2 older ones. Thank you as always for facilitating such a great interview!
I have listened to You Tube almost all day for years. This was one of the top three interviews i've ever heard about how to honor oneself and life. Reed's wisdom and warmth are invaluable.
She never said anything about how much money she has. Maybe she’s a millionaire and had a minor surgery and is recovering. You people need to quit judging people!
You are part of the system you’re imprisoned in. We have so much information available to us nowadays to get us wherever we want to get in life. The missing part is not someone else’s fault but our own. Use what’s available to build you up not break you down. Most people with money got there by relentlessly pursuing it until it happened, not by complaining about it.
His partner can be volunteering because he is a billionaire. Also, your friends are important if you have time that you would otherwise spend on raising children. It's a trade-off, give your children quality time or work. The working class do not have that privilege but if you can be a caring parent, that's better than just being at the dinner table. Who is making the dinner and cleaning up? Since Steven has so many guests on health, I am surprised that he did not push back more on eating badly in your twenties and being a workaholic. Of course, you do have to work hard to be at the top but it is not everything in life. The guest can fly on his private plane and then talk about climate change and not think we, the audience, will not think this is hypocrisy, is fooling themself.
This! Of course, she had no problem switching the wedding. 😂 However, I think even the working class must make tough decisions on what’s important in life. Unfortunately, almost everyone in at least America typically gets this wrong. Most Americans are awful at balancing life.
Watching these shows, I sometimes feel sad that I was born on a farm in a third-world communist country torn by war. I first heard about the internet around 2004-2005, and I managed to buy my first PC in 2008. Now I live in the West, and life is good. I'm a civil engineer, working as a consultant for a global company, and I also run my own design office. I probably live better than 80% of people in Norway. But it makes me sad that I fell behind in my early years when it comes to technological development-especially during the time when people are at their most creative. That’s why I’m determined to provide my children with the best possible education in the field of economics, so they can understand money and the world around them. They don’t have to work in economics or technology, but having knowledge in these areas is invaluable. As someone who was bombarded with communist propaganda in my early years, I still struggle to fully understand the economic system I now live in.
❤ feeling you. Only us, who lived in communism can understand that. You should be proud of yourself for giving your children a better start in life ! ❤ Teach your children the concept and tools of investing from very early stage. That will set them up for success !
You are the best option to educate your children. I was born and raised in the US. I grew up in the school system. I am just now learning this entire system for what it is and I am married, with a teenage child given birth by my wife of 15 years. Growing up in the inner cities of America never provided me with the exposure and education you and I feel like we've missed out on. We've been homeschooling our son ever since kindergarten and we're teaching him everything that the school system in America failed to teach us about this government and economics. Responsible GrassRoot & Normal Parents need to replace this failed system as a whole.

Linkedin is a total disaster. Nothing but scammers, narcissists and liar profiles with phony skillsets validated by mere fact the befriend someone else in the same game, clawing for fake jobs.
As an entrepreneur and a Centrist (Left & Right-Wing Politics), Reid Hoffman your take on matters in politics and entrepreneurship has to be applauded.
Techno nerds have no idea how many lives have been more stressful due to their competitive gaming attitudes of lives. Good be scared, you have put many in that precise predicament. One good thing about linkedin is reading the b.s. of the egos.
Well said, competitive gaming attitude, which we are right now seeing destructive examples of. Idolising that because it made a group of these people billionaires, is limiting.
Very true. Yet still needs that regulated caption disclaimer, these are the proven truths and untruths about what you said and here are those references. Belief is a terrible thing when it's lies that get repeated enough to cause millions of onlookers to believe and act on it. Open mindedness means that it doesn't matter what I believe or dislike, I'm always seeking the most truth possible. Ai could help humanity in the way of not so much of claiming truth, rather tools for finding truth at exponential speed.
And you get to live with the consequences of what you say. If some one punches you in the mouth because you insult them and you lose a tooth then your speech cost you a tooth even if the person goes to jail. It's the potential for actual losses that help moderate speech between individuals. You can't say what ever without consequences. Now we have decided (rightly so) that the government and it's police powers cannot be used to regulate speech. I as an individual can regulate the speech of those around me by being formidable in my person, intellect, strength, influence and power I also watch what I say depending on the circumstances so my speech is also regulated by individuals

Hearing him talk about his chances at succeeding being at 25% is really interesting when it comes to Linkedin. Really as you are working on whatever your idea is, over time the more you show up and put the work in and collaborate with the right people you bring that number up. So when you are first starting out your chances are probably at 0%. It's really your job to show up consistently and bring that number up.
I strongly disagree with his point on the importance of references. Relying on references this much is not fair. They're often biased, only show one side of the story, and might favour well-connected candidates over truly skilled ones.
Cool-videos! My five-year relationship came to an end a month ago. The love of my life chose to leave, and I can't stop thinking about him; I love him so deeply. I've done everything I can to win him back, but nothing seems to work. I'm feeling frustrated and can't imagine my life with anyone else. Despite my efforts to move on, I just can't shake the thoughts of him. I don’t know why I’m sharing this, (but I really miss him)
Saying goodbye to someone you love is difficult; I know this from my 12-year relationship ending. But I was unable to simply let him go, so I made every effort to get him back. I eventually sought aid from a spiritual counselor, who was able to help me regain his affection.

Great comment about the importance of luck. The entrepreneurs on "How I Built This" also commonly refer to the importance of luck, in addition to hard work, etc.
For all the regular folk out there like me.. you don't have to be an inventive entrepreneur who creates a billion dollar company to get rich. If you get a good education and use that to get a good paying job. Then all you have to do is spend less than you make and invest the difference. If you start doing that in your 20s you will be ready to retire at 50 with millions.
Also what’re ur thoughts on having gaps on ur resume due to dealing with toxic people at ur job (didn’t do research on company before joining) There is only so much you can take even in a bad economy when it comes to toxic people. I’m the type that believes health supersedes everything including a nice cushy salary. But unfortunately this belief is a double edged swords. It protects and hurts. More benefits than costs. But how can I soften the blows? How does one justify a gap in a resume?
It’s fine working all hours if you’re the owner, but for employees to do that, that’s bad form unless they’re being reasonably compensated for it. Simply saying this is how we work is bullshit.
LMAO, I was just going to comment this! He has the physiognomy for it down to a T! Allegedly there's an AI system that can detect them, but I can too because I've been locked up around enough of them to be able to pick up on commonalities, including across racial lines. "They" are deathly afraid of Trump for some reason, too!
@RunForPeace-hk1cu 😂 I can't believe people don't know that yet. He is one of the few people who is on the list, have been photographed with epstein hundreds of times (which means it wasn't a fluke), and has hundreds of SA accusations against him including some from known epstein minors PRE PRESIDENTIAL RUN. There is no person on earth with as much evidence against him. 😂 At least the other people on the list who have only been on his plane or island once have plausible deniability. Epstein would trick people into going to his parties in exchange for investment into their company in order to blackmail them later. Trump has been to Epsteins island, in his private jet, and even to his apartments.
Reid Hoffman provided great insights. I wish I was 20 again to take more chances on the things I felt were BIG ideas and partnered with people who could bring my idea to life.
The work life balance discussion is interesting. I worked at a startup for years and I was happy to work all hours. I lead at a start up today and the newer generation are different in wish to work long hours, also UK law means there is no way I can ask staff to open laptop after dinner, I'll be sued for constructive dismissal. The answer feels dated looking at the UK workplace today, which may explain competitive and productivity issues we have compared to other countries. We can encourage a culture of innovation and hard team work, we cannot ask for or expect long hours beyond what is contracted or lawful.
This is a comment of astonishing ignorance. If you are targeted due to ur support of a candidate's opponent, obvi, you ve done NOTHING wrong. You are guilty of nothing but any person, at his level can be maligned and put in the SM grinder. The disgusting irony is that Trump is ALREADY proven to have the dirtiest hands.

Not a big Trump fan but (mis)using a communication platform in order to get about the dumbest person in the universe elected SHOULD have consequences. I am on LI and the amount of pre-selected / twisted information in their news-feed is mind-boggling and the reason why I am trying to use it as little as possible.
Are you saying that Trump is the dumbest person in the universe or Harris? I think both are smart. I think Trump has a mandate to rework the US gov and hopefully that means getting costs down and lowering red tape, not making it super partisan because that could cause decades of problems for America. Thinking that either candidate was dumb suggests you are stuck in an information bubble.
You're right, in 20 years following politics i dont think ive seen someone lie on commande like that and act like the dumbest person in the room. Ohh well, thankfull biden is out of office now!

The "Right now! Long term" reference he mentions correlates perfectly with Gary Vaynerchuck's 'Clouds & Dirt' philosophy - You gotta move fast on your day-to-day but be patient long-term, play the long game
Interesting that the comments here are all rather circling around what I’m feeling as I’m watching. “I cannot relate to this guy at all.” (And I used to work in silicon valley at a certain college many with a multicolor fruit logo) He’s talking about VC money and strategies that I think have very little to do with most of us who don’t have to worry about antitrust laws. I’m rewatching Steven’s videos interview with Daniel Priestly. Amazing guy. Feels very down-to-earth, and real. He mentions one idea in particular that I’m going to use as I’m starting a new business.
Look at him and his health. Not to mention he is a Harris supporter. So done with LinkedIn. I’m not listening to ANYONE about work life balance and what is important when they are clearly not the master of their own body. Just because he’s successful doesn’t mean it’s all him. He has people that help him in his success.
most startups do not IPO, let alone have the right founder. Not worth it. I’d much rather be a founder myself than work for one if I were to return to the startup space. It’s only worth it for new grads who have zero experience, couldn’t land a role at a top tier company and are aware they will be taken advantage of all for the sake of “building professional experience”. The one good thing is that I learned a lot of skills very quickly. But as one of the founding/early engineers, I definitely got screwed and unfortunately more than once
I hear you, however, you should not join a start up for experience if you have none. You should probably intern for an established business so you can get some base skills. Or try for an entry level position in a company that has brilliant people working. Again, so you can learn and watch how it’s done. People coming right out of school really don’t know much and are not typically valuable. They think they are - mostly. That’s why they think they are getting burned. The time to join a start up is when you have some skills/understanding of what “team” means, and you want to be a part of an idea - not a product. This way you are not on the outside of the winning team ( should they win) You are a valued indispensable participant working with a (hopefully) visionary founder’s journey. By the by, this answer is more for someone that might be reading our conversation. Sounds like you’ve made the journey- good luck to you.
But as you move to your founder position- don’t think for one moment that you won’t have to hurt some people on your way. It is inevitable. The tides shift and you WILL have to choose.
@@FluidLifeWays personally, I think that if you’re targeting people that already have experience, they need to be compensated above market with tangible cash not pretend Monopoly money. Or if you believe on the potential of the Monopoly money and you’re one of the founding members but not a co-founder yourself, you need a similar/high % amount of equity as the founders themselves. If not, again, if you want to be part of an idea and understand a team, better to be the founder yourself and execute on your own idea and build your own team. I might return to the startup space… as a founder myself
It's not wrong to insult people (excluding their associates) if they are willing to be insulted themselves. However, I dislike platforms that permit one-sided insults and allow them to be expressed openly, like Twitter did.
Exactly. And now Twitter (X) is 1000 times better, allowing people to speak their minds for the most part. Free speech is (should be) very nearly absolute in my opinion.
I was able to step back from this and reflect, as it left me conflicted about supporting a business like LinkedIn. Watching your recent podcast with Martha Beck was a breath of fresh air and gave me hope. I sincerely hope that the traditional Silicon Valley leadership style, which prioritizes rapid growth at all costs, is becoming a thing of the past. Reid Hoffman doesn’t seem like a bad person, just someone whose approach aligns more with an older, more conventional mindset in the tech world. It’s encouraging to see new models of leadership emerging that focus on deeper values and long-term impact.

A Master is never going to reveal his secrets. Let me give you a hint. There's no such thing as luck. You plan your 'luck'. But it's good that simpletons like you can be convinced that luck indeed exists because then you won't be competition, which realistically you could. It can work, if you are driven, totally on board for the 24/7 responsibilities, and have help. The “networking” for the startup translates to “family/community” for the children. You will need a team as a founder and another team as a parent, with a lot of support and help from both teams.
What about your wife's success?
@susanjames4226came to say this! If he's working hard, who has the child? It's seems much easier to focus on work when you're out of the house and away from a child who requires care. Having a child impacts the success of the primary carer
He should have prefaced the "work nonstop except for dinner" argument with, "they get shares in the company for their work"... its a CEOs job to work like a slave IF they are the ones who receive the profit.

Stephen,
Your interviews on The Diary of a CEO are nothing short of brilliant-insightful questions, expertly chosen guests, and topics that truly resonate.

@@impostorsyndrome1350 not necessarily. Some people seek out new ventures when they're older. Colonel Sanders was...67(?) when he started his rise.

Ya right, he's a billionaire, hahahahah.
This! Of course, she had no problem switching the wedding. 😂
However, I think even the working class must make tough decisions on what’s important in life.

Teach your children the concept and tools of investing from very early stage.

Free speech is my ability to say without restraint something other people don’t like!
@@ltwig476 agreed. However, who is the Final Arbiter of Truth? I trust Polymark way before the ADL or X
The tech scum like to block free speech.
I as an individual can regulate the speech of those around me by being formidable in my person, intellect, strength, influence and power
I also watch what I say depending on the circumstances so my speech is also regulated by individuals

You might be a real Christian and understand this, but in this age, thanks to the shameless way that so many Christians condoned and even spread MAGAism, it now needs to be pointed out to the world that pro-Trumpism and Christianity are NOT the same, nor do they even overlap. Now Christian nationalism, sure.
Not a big Trump fan but (mis)using a communication platform in order to get about the dumbest person in the universe elected SHOULD have consequences. I am on LI and the amount of pre-selected / twisted information in their news-feed is mind-boggling and the reason why I am trying to use it as little as possible.
So true!!
I don't think you actually read comments or feedback. Your intros induce headaches! The screen "flashing" and swiping so fast is the equivalent to flashing lights. So I automatically skip to past the first 2-3 minutes. I send your podcasts to older friends and they always think I'm sending them an INFOMERCIAL because of the cheesy/cheap intros.
Big channels don’t read comments.
“I cannot relate to this guy at all.”
(And I used to work in silicon valley at a certain college many with a multicolor fruit logo)
He’s talking about VC money and strategies that I think have very little to do with most of us who don’t have to worry about antitrust laws.
I worked at startup and it’s just not worth it. You get screwed as far as comp. Founders have it made, not everyone else
You’re with the wrong founder.
most startups do not IPO, let alone have the right founder.
This was a fantastic interview.
'I like going through life with amazing people' - so humble
Brilliant, so much clarity with some of my ideas.
@1:23:12 Some have suggested the definition of a vaccine was changed for mRNA vaccines, is that true?
yes you might check the 2 versions before and after 2019/2020 (depending on your country, source of information ex WHO ou national authority... but anyway you will see the difference : the first couldnt include MRNA techno wich rather fall under genet herapy, the later is enlarged to include the MRNA plateform
Yes, it was done to capitalize on the generally widely accepted concept of vaccines to introduce an extremely dangerous gene therapy.
I would highly suggest you research into this Sir to get the answers, there is so much out there.
If life only means making money, these talks are valuable. But our relationship with family members, friends and the true GOD is much more valuable which money can never buy. A heard that is content has inner peace and that peace comes with a strong connection to the true GOD.
I Agree 💯
I don’t agree with everything you said but money shouldn’t be the focus for sure
Amen!!💯🎯
amen
So how many gods are there? If your god is the true god then the lesser not true gods are what? Lemme guess, the devil and his allies?
oh dear, it was quite interesting until you got on the subject of politics and vaccines. I mean Robert Malone's LinkedIn account was closed simply because he quesstioned 'the established view'. You might have at least pressed Reid on that.
@@Neurk yes Steve didn’t question what really should’ve been questioned. Typical = he’s scared.
Well, I think we know why he didn't press him on that. I'll not be looking to watch any of this garbage going forward.
Can you interview a plant-based doctor? Like Dr. Michael Klapper, Dr. Michael Gregor, Dr. Neil Barnard.
Trump is good to lower tax and create an eco friendly environment for new startup and small business .
also good for encouraging sexual assault
enjoyed the interview !!!
I appreciate his humility and his recognition that luck played a big part in his success
A Master is never going to reveal his secrets. Let me give you a hint. There's no such thing as luck. You plan your 'luck'. But it's good that simpletons like you can be convinced that luck indeed exists because then you won't be competition, which realistically you could. Yes, realistically you could be his competitor, and he knows that very well, but of course you'll never allow yourself to believe that. Because you don't have the internal power to exercise faith, which is backed up by persistent relentless action towards ones goals.
@@SVN62534 honestly? get over yourself. you could have been born to laborers in rural Bangladesh and being clever & working your butt off could only get you so far in life due to the constraints of the impoverished, dysfunctional context in which you were raised. Widen your lens, you ignorant fool, and own up to your luck & privileges like he does. I am tired of CEOs born into contexts in which their hard work and cleverness leads to being rich/successful (lucky for them!) and then sucking themselves over it because they're sooo amazing. Gimme a break. At least this guy hasn't fallen prey.
@@SVN62534agree 1000% believing in luck is your first mistake.
Point of Fact: a verbal threat that creates a reasonable fear of imminent harm (which if your saying they should be banned, you must be causing reasonable fear of harm) in the victim can be considered assault, even if no physical contact is made.a threat + the apparent ability to carry it out can constitute assault
Congratulations DOAC, you made it on BBC news. They claim you don't challenge guest claims enough, I think you balance challenging and moving conversations along fairly well
They are just jealous I’ll bet BBC has a lot less viewers than Steven
I wholeheartedly agree with your comment.
That fiver ad was defo AI 😂
