  • The new Harley-Davidson 2020 models are coming with the Reflex Defensive Rider System (RDRS) as a $995 option for the touring line-up except for the Electra Glide Standard. RDRS comes standard on the Livewire, Tri-Glide Ultra trike, and all CVO models.
    In this video, I explain what is included in the package and if it is worth adding it to your 2020 Harley touring model. The Reflex Defensive Rider System comes with cornering enhanced electronic linked braking, cornering enhanced antilock braking system, cornering enhanced traction control system, drag-torque slip control system, vehicle hold control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

    Just to make it clear I'm also a Motor Officer for my county Sheriff Office so I'm a very confident Rider with a decent amount of knowledge in handling a bike. That being said... Stuff happens while riding as far as gravel on the on-ramp. With my bike in a deep lean about 30mph my rear tire hit gravel and slipped out the RDRS responded immediately, much faster than I could have and I would say 20% was Knowledge and 80% was RDRS that saved the wife and I from a serious injury. That one incident with RDRS was worth every penny of it's value.

    I have a 2020 FLHTP which comes standard with RDRS ( for no extra charge on police bikes) Here's what I'v found so far. I didn't think I'd have a use for the hill hold feature however, my driveway is on a slight hill and when I have to dig around for my door opener, I used to have to shut the bike off in gear to keep it from rolling back while searching around for the opener. Now a squeeze on the brake and the bike won't roll. The tire pressure warning light is quite sensitive. The warning light came on with just two lbs low in the rear tire. I tried the traction control out by putting the bike in rain mode, pulling onto some grass and purposely giving a bit too much throttle. The tire spun for a split second then regained traction. As for the linked ABS, according to the manual, the brakes are now linked at 2mph instead of 20 to 25mph. While I haven't noticed this to be a problem as of yet, I have to wonder why H.D. felt this was necessary and wish they had a switch to shut off the linked system until 20mph and above. In closing, so far, so good.

      Well, the other brands don't have the HOG group members crying about how they don't need any new technology because they've been riding forever and never needed it before. They bitch about the $1000 price tag. While at the same time dropping $2500 on a set of aftermarket pipes because THAT is what saves lives!

    The only thing I always worry about with these types of systems is what happens if it fails or doesn’t operate as intended? Can it actually CAUSE a problem. Example, way back when, my friend bought a brand new 92 Thunderbird SuperCoupe. What a car!! It was gorgeous. One day he was driving in a parking garage, went to stop, and brakes went to the floor and didn’t stop the car. Quick thinking, he pulled the e brake. Turned out the ABS chip failed and wiped out his brakes entirely. As long as these systems can’t exert so much influence or are not integrated to the point they can CAUSE a problem, I agree...extra layers of safety beyond proper riding technique is a good thing. Don’t rely on them though.

    • @johnmadsen37
      @johnmadsen37 5 років тому

      Yes. Those old first gen systems sucked.
      The bikes still use force to apply the brakes either by wire or hydraulic. Then abs uses a very fast actuator to momentarily interrupt. Now days these systems are setup so if it fails, it would be stuck off rather than on. Do brakes work, no abs interruptions.
      Traction control uses abs plus sensors like lean angle and front read wheel speed differential. And can interrupt power output. Same deal, if it fails, it’s off.
      Really on bikes and cars. You can only cut power or cut braking. And sometimes adjust suspension but that takes more than milliseconds so it’s too slow. Then it’s all just sensors.
      The computers get smarter. But it’s still wheel speed control.

    I do not have RDS. I've learned the hard way not to let false bravado overcome my riding ability. I would rather take it easy rather than winding up roadkill. I don't care what someone will say. I have before witnessed someone raggin' on my ass that wound up with road rash. Yes, I have crashed before and I did not like it. However we all know no matter what, you can still die every time you plant your ass on a two wheeler.

    Until my 1972 FLH all my Harleys and original Indians had drum brakes front and rear. A front drump brake is anti stop not anything lock and are only good to hold you at a light or hill. They were also all tank shifts so I am not in the habit of using the front brake at all. When I got my 02 FLSTC I dropped it twice pushing it because of that grabby front did brake. I had to train myself to use it but I'm better now after a few years using disc brakes.

  • @austincolt3306
    @austincolt3306 5 років тому

    I think waiting a couple years for them to work bugs out would be wise. The tpms should have been standard on all of them. But instead you have to have a brand new touring bike taken to shop and have tires pulled and add the sensors and flashed to get that feature. Linked abs is still the most important. Hill start would be a nice convenience. I’m a fare weather rider so the traction control would be as obnoxious as my f150 start stop tech where I have to push a button every time I get in truck to deactivate it. You would have to be a pretty bad rider to need these features. Abs is Somthing most need for a panic when Somthing runs out or cuts u off out of nowhere. Natural to respond with an unintentional heavy braking in that spilt second.

    Keep the $1000. Learn to ride and practice practice practice. We do high speed emergency braking practice at least ten times a month. Do it on my 18ultra with abs and my 19FLHT without abs. Top speed for this is 50mph. If you lock it up or your abs kicks in you buy the beer

    I've been riding since 1975 most of my life on British Nortons and Triumph 750's and now on a 2018 Ultra Glide. I agree with you completely that riding skills and understanding are the key to safe riding. This kind of technology concerns me, surely the best safety tools are your own experience and gut feeling for the riding conditions? Adding another element into the roadcraft seems to be more of an obstacle and may introduce new reliance and risks into what is already a very dangerous activity if you are not fully attuned to the machine and road conditions.
