  • A thorough explanation of the new 2020 Model year RDRS or Reflex Defensive Rider Systems that were applied to the Touring family of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This is a collection of Electronic Chassis Controls that are designed to match motorcycle performance with available traction during acceleration, deceleration, and braking. Matt Laidlaw goes into the details and demonstrates some of these features.

    Great video. I'm just upgrading from a 2012 Electra Glide Classic (FLHTC) to a 2020 Ultra Limited (FLHTK). I've ridden my 2012 cross-country extensively. When I bought it, ABS was a selling feature, and it probably saved my (and my wife's) life on a couple of occasions at least. Great feature. The 2020 FLHTK I just bought (with 9,000 mi.) has the RDRS system on it, and I am very grateful for the added safety technologies. I am 60 years old and have been riding my whole life. I have nothing left to prove to anyone, so bring on the new safety tech!

    Thanks Matt, I have been frustrated with Harley Davidson and other Motorcycle manufactures for spending too much time on flashy paint schemes, horsepower and slick advertising instead of looking out for their ridership and focusing on additional safety features. I am pleased to see Harley Davidson finally using these technical advances and incorporating them into their motorcycles. I hope Harley Davidson stays the course and keeps engineering new safety features for the sole purpose in keeping their customers alive, not to mention giving new riders more confidence and encouraging new riders to the sport. Good move Harley.. it’s about damn time!

    I have these features on my '17 R1200GS. Wildly different bikes, but very helpful features. I'm glad Harley is adding this. I went from an 04 Ultra Classic and will likely come back. My decision to go to a GS was based on the tech side of these features. While I'm not the young man I once was, it's really beneficial.
    I will say going back to other bikes without these features means you need to be careful. You start to realize those features clean up your riding, especially cornering ABS. Very hard to trust that feature for me at first but it'll really save your ass taking a curve to hot. None of this can defy the laws of physics but it makes for a safer ride. Traction control can also save your ass from a small patch of gravel in the most inconvenient spot.
    It's worth having on any bike. Great overview. Now I have to convince my wife I need a Harley again. She grunts and groans getting on the back of a very tall GS. She's admitted the Harley was more comfortable for a passenger.

      My 2009 K1300GT has ALL of these same functions and its 10 years old.
      This just proves that Harley Davidson is EASILY 10 years behind other manufacturers in technological advancements. Give em' another 10 years and MAYBE they'll get to figuring out how to get the windscreen to go up/down and figure out how to eliminate the chain drive primary. Also in another 10 years from now maybe they'll introduce a reverse feature much like one that comes factory equipped on ANY 90's era Honda Goldwing!

I came across sand tonight and with just A fraction amount of slip from the rear tire it kicked right in reduced the power and there was no slippage of the Rear wheel. Yes probably would have made it through but with that your chances increase by 99% the hill assist breaking is absolutely wonderful.

I just bought a 22 ultra after being on a 2008 for some time. and I liked the idea of the RDRS when he dealer told me about it, but your video really helped me understand it at a whole new level. Funny thing is, I actually had the RDRS engage on me riding home today. My engine shut down power to my rear wheel on a hard take off and I wasnt sure what had happened. Most likely started to loose traction to my rear wheel. This video just put me at ease, since I thought I had damaged something durring my break in. lol. thanks once again for the very informative video.

    Great job Matt for explaining the electronic chassis control. I have a Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE+ that has this same system, and it is amazing how often you note your rear wheel is spinning up. I can set it on three modes, and most intrusive I will hear the engine back off the power to prevent a power slide situation. It is GP inspired technology, Kawasaki came out with it on the 200 horsepower Ninja 1000 H2.
    I would highly recommend this system, even for the seasoned rider, as the technology using parameters of lean angle and inertia, coupled to the traction control system is amazing. When you find yourself riding in the rain unexpectedly, it's funny how you see the system engage to keep the bike upright, and you in control.

The rest of the features pays for them self’s. If I loose the bike in a curve in wet weather, the cost of the damages alone would far exceed the price of this option not to mention getting seriously hurt. It’s one of those option that if it comes into play just once in 100,000 miles, it will of paid for itself.

Personally the hill feature is of no use to me, just got accustomed to doing without, and I feel about the same way regarding traction control and etc. Will keep the bike simpler and save the $1000. If I was really worried about additional safety I probably shouldn't be riding a motorcycle.

    That hill hold is worth getting this system alone especially on bigger bikes. I don't need it but it sure is convenient and I would certainly appreciate having it. My only concern with the system altogether is it adding more possible fail points mechanically on the bike. More things that could break down and need servicing but I think it's worth having.

    The hill hold feature is nice except when you unload the bike from a trailer. When you're backing down a ramp if you squeeze the brake too hard, it'll activate the hill hold and you're stuck. You have to go forward (up the ramp) to deactivate it and then go back down. Kind of a pain. There should be a way to deactivate it.

    Matt Laidlaw can the RDRS be added to a 2020 Road Glide at a dealership? I bought my new bike without really understanding what this option does. After watching your video, I wish I had the RDRS feature.

    Very impressive. Was wondering when Harley would catch up with Honda, BMW, ETC. I can see these features helping new riders tremendously. Nice to have for skilled riders. I’d love to have the position hold feature. Normally, hills aren’t a problem but on my ride to work I have to hit a 75% corner that is also a steep incline. Oh, and there’s a damn stop sign. For this situatuon alone I’d pay the extra thousand. Great stuff Matt. I swear when I’m in the market again, I’m making the trek to your place from Jersey. Ride safe brother.

      I added "Hill Start Control" to my GS. I haven't used it that often. I live in a hilly area but rarely need it. I'd say it still takes getting used to. I'd still practice to get used to it.

    Well I also have a BMW R1200GS and nothing of this electronics is new but it’s very useful and lot of welcome in HD touring bikes This in fact should be optional for all the line up. In my beemer the brake to avoid the rolldown in uphill is also useful to avoid rolldown in downhill as well. One ask for you guys don’t you think it’s time to HD avoid us the humiliation to burn our hands when in the gas station we set up the tires pressure? Ok thanks for the videos for your time it’s a lot of interesting and good vibes to you all, from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

    Great review, as always. Thanks for the info. Definitely will be getting it on my next bike. Just bought a 19 RGU so it will be awhile. Curious who is building the system, Bosch was and is the foremost, as years ago KTM introduced it with much scepticism, however once it was proven then BMW and many others jumped on the band wagon. Glad to see Harley finally embrace the technology. Here in Florida the roads are like Ice when its raining and just pulling away very carefully I have spun the rear wheel. Going around corners you have to do everything slow and careful or the bike can slide out, even a 940 lb RGU. Thanks again Matt.

    I love the vehicle hold man- Here in SF Bay area especially in the city the constant braking on hills can just be a pin in the ass in a few area in heavy traffic. I live up on the Santa Cruz mtns and traffic gets nuts one weekend if it is really bad you can end up doing the brake on a fairly steep hill 20-30 times in 2 miles.

    The roll hold for stopping on a slop is a feature that is standard on the pan american deluxe adventure ....and i began to appreciate abs brakes on the 2017 dyna S as one day going into the parking lot kinda hot of our O'Reilly parts house and there is a lot of fine sand on their concrete parking lot and not visible and grabbed a handful of front and rear brake ..and in half second i felt and heard the front tire siding to the right while turning left into a parking space ..and i was about a half second slow on reaction time to save a high side washout and slamming the bike onto its left side as i was still doing at least 15 mph and probably not be able to buff out all the possible scratches ..the abs brake system let go of the front brake calipers allowing the front wheel to regain traction correcting my lean angle as i was already in the process of going down then when the front tire stopped sliding it grabbed better traction allowing me to roll into a parking space perfectly as the abs saved me a ton of embarrassment .. the kind of which if your buddies ever see the damage that would have been at least a small dent in the gas tank with a slightly greater pull back to the left handle bar more than the right side handle bar... Bent or broken clutch lever with a scratch up left fork leg and a front fender with bright wide areas of black paint ground down with the factory primer coat showing that your friends will never let you live it down ...

    Definitely a technological advancement for H-D instead of just a different color of paint or some other blingy cosmetic stuff so kudos to H-D for it. But the thing is there have been other motorcyle manufacturers that have been offering similar features for a few years now and the features have been included into the price of the bike, not an added expense. But anyway you look at it, it's a good thing.

    • @bloodymarvelous4790
      @bloodymarvelous4790 5 років тому

      That's not really a fair comparison though. These features are included by other manufacturers on sports and adventure bikes, and generally not on cruisers. It's a different kind of riding that's done with those bikes. And don't kid yourself, it may be standard and not an option you need to pay extra for to get, but you are paying for it. It's just included in the total. Even KTM has an additional riding modes software package for their bikes that you can purchase for a couple of hundred bucks.

    • @ozzie444
      @ozzie444 5 років тому

      @@bloodymarvelous4790 Understood these features are included in other manufacturers models and therefore you're paying for it. But H-D models are already pricey anyway and H-D is very much in a catch-up situation in regards to all "new" (new for H-D) features and technology they've introduced in the past few years. If it wasn't for other manufacturers introducing new improved and much more reliable motorcycles with improved performance and H-D seemingly reluctantly having to keep up, we'd all still be riding 4-speed Shovelheads....lol.

    Great video, thanks for sharing. I had been researching these items and found this one from a while ago. One thing to add on the newest versions of Hill Hold, you have to be in gear (of course clutch engaged) for it to work. It WILL NOT work in neutral so you DO NOT have use of both hands while engaged. Kinda silly to me to switch one hand for another, but maybe that restriction can be turned off in the system. Still waiting for that answer.
    I hope this helps, although a bit late to the comments, great stuff and thank you for all the useful videos.

    2012 stability control was mandated for all cars. It can save more lives than seatbelts. Helps prevent oversteer and understeer with TC/ABS/torque control. Stability control uses an IMU with ABS/TC/torque control. Algorithms computing traction sharing, brake sharing. Sometimes algorithms saves you before you get into trouble. Stability control in cars have made this available for motorcycles. Some brands are making standard all the way to 125 cc These driver assists are in the background at all times. They are never distracted. Tired, and give 100%. Most are non intrusive.
