This video felt good to make as I hated ending the last one with the bike not running! This bike is going to be a blast to play with and mod! We still have a ways to go on the bike as the Vboost still isn't working and we now have a clogged pilot jet but, we will get there! Who has that Kerker I want?
I don't have the Kerker you need but I've got a question. What company do you get your brake caliper kits from. Have an 82 GS850GL that needs to be ridden but I want to be able to stop as well.
I was 14 at the time, and I lusted after one since then. Got one in 2005. Milestone! It is a 1999 and I am not selling that bike, full stop. Absolutely love it.
Vmaxs are so much fun. They may be long from the quickest anymore, but their visceral light-to-light enjoyment is hard to match. I rode and drag raced an 85 for many years and really delved into all the aftermarket fun. I would agree that the Kerker 4-1 produces a symphony that will make you just want to keep it in the shop to start and rev when your day is a little shit. Until that time you can greatly increase the sound by just putting the largest drill bit on an extension that will fit down that outlet and drilling through the baffle. Dynojet used to make a Stage 1 and Stage 3 jet kit. Stage 1 gave the best streetable machine, but the Stage 3 would produce great numbers for high revving drag racing. Both would allow you adjustable needles and assortment of jets. Stage 3 had you drill a larger hole in the carb pistons and it removed the Vboost replacing it with open connectors so that you always had the Vboost but mine never seemed to like lower street revs after that. Dale Walker did a ton of racing and aftermarket parts including belt driven superchargers or 4-barrel conversions. Kosman would machine a sick wider and larger circumference rear wheel so that some updated sticky rubber could be run on the rear while retaining the shaft drive. The UK and France had some great published Hooligan builds that went extreme Front ends were always spaghetti and my riding friends would tell me they could see the frame flexing when they rode behind. I would just carry my weight on the pegs and hover over the seat so that it could dance all it wanted. Jay Gleason did some amazing times on Vmaxs including the spread that Cycle World did back with an 85 with a Kerker and the Dynojet Stage3. He went high 9s I believe with some bolt on wheelie bars. thekneeslider.com/jay-gleason-rides-new-vmax-to-9513-at-14370/
I was a passenger on one once back in the in the 80's. My friend Steve Linch scared the living shit out of me, i was hold on to him for my life. Will never forget it!!!!!!
Back in 89 my lead and bought one new. Took it for a spin and it was unbelievable. Looked for one these past years UT prices were crazy. Forgot about it until this video. Now at 70 I've got the bug again. Always good content.
@@BrickHouseBuildsI have v max's. I fix, ride sell when I want to. When you are ready for the holley carb'd supercharger setup ( magnacharger) let me know. I have two superchargers with the necessary hardware.
A guy did a V-Max build back when.these were new. He called it "Bad Max." I saw it locally here in Phoenix, but it was also featured in a motorcycle magazine (forgot which one). It had the most incredible sound of any motorcycle I've ever heard. It sounded like a built V8 from idle to full twist. It would have been neat if more people built these bikes, but they were so complicated and expensive. Great job getting it running!
My uncle had one and he let me take it for a spin when I was 18 or so (I just freshly lost my license and was only allowed to ride 125cc anyway). Man, what a pig it was to ride. Slow speed maneuvering and turning takes the strength level of an olympic weightlifter, that thing seemed to have 100% weight on the front. Then came the moment I hit a long-ish straight and revved her out, from 50 km/h in 3rd all the way to 160 km/h or so, when I closed the throttle because my hands flew off the handlebars! Never have I ever been on a machine this fast; in fact that thing was faster from 50-160 than any other vehicle I have ever ridden from 0-50!
those style of electrolytic capacitors almost always need to be replaced when they get old. Might be worth opening one of the better looking ones and trying to replace
@@BrickHouseBuilds I've done it on old guitar amps and stuff like that. I'm no electronics expert - Easy if you have a solder sucker especially on these simple old boards.
I wish I was in the US of A or I would do it for you. In Australia. Should be pretty easy except I think it has conformal coating that makes it a bit more of a hassle. That it kinds sorta works after a bit does tend to indicate it is the caps. It would also be worth checking the mosfets on the completely failed ones. Another quite easy fix.
There is a simple mod you can do to the stock mufflers that will make it sound better. Drill out the rivets holding the end plates on, drill some holes in between the rivet holes then using M4 nuts glued on to the inside of the end plate as spacers and longer rivets, put the end plates back on (or leave them off).

Got a 1997 that I turned into a Mad Max naked streetfighter with a Hindle exhaust and open mufflers from a Harley. Every plastic body panel has been removed. Fake tank, side covers and fenders removed. Installed fork brace, frame braces, thigh plates, Goldwing battery, flipped the handlebars and installed adjustable risers. Can return it to stock configuration in a weekend. I have more fun riding that that my 2012 2nd Gen VMAX 1700.
Thanks for starting the bike with your shop door open! And using the big fan. I love this bike. The closest I got to riding one was sitting on one in someone's garage.
I am rebuilding my 85 Vmax as we speak! Just did the head bearing removal last night, just as much of a pain as yours was. This video series will really help me during my rebuild, thank you for that. I enjoy your channel, you have skills Sir.
There’s a guy in England called the “super bike doctor” that recently posted a couple of video repairing a V-Max. He found the electronic controllers were bad. There a bunch of electrolytic capacitors that went bad, mainly through age. When he replaced the capacitors everything engine related cleared up.
It is amazing how sensitive the CV carbs are to the airbox. I got my CB650 nighthawk running and kept testing it on open carbs to make sure it was right before putting it back together and it just ran like ass. I finally made a cardboard block off plate and it finally ran decent. Put the airbox all back together and it totally rips now. I’m officially a believer. The old guys know what the heck they are talking about.
Just wanted to share what i found out recently. I just rebuilt my honda valkyrie forks and also am too cheap to buy a seal driver. You can find seal driver stls (3d printer files) in any size you need. It doesnt take long to print. I used just regular old pla at 100% infill and they worked great!
Hay guys a trick thatcan sometimes fix the ecu or computer/cdi units is to put in the oven on like 500 degrees for like 5 minutes or so to heat up to dry out any moisture and reconnect any bad joints. It worked for me once.

I feel like I have to say "Great job" on your soldering job! I was saying as you were doing it "not too much,..." But you absolutely nailed it. I love soldering when it's done right.
Had a 2001. The S-Trapp dual sounds like a cammed 350. Brute power for sure but chassis/suspension 💩. If I remember correctly, the rear wheel is off track of the front wheel. Also frame/swingarm flex. 70 mph wobble was terrifying the 1st time it happened. Front steering damper and whatever you can do to stiffen the swingarm is my suggestion, especially once you get it dialed. Powerband hits hard around 4k as I remember. Everyone loves a V-Max!
The max is such a joy to work on that to pull the fuel tank to clean it out you need to drop the motor. Fun fact if you are bored enough to look down at the warning lights on the tank on a launch when it hooks good the oil level light will flicker on and off at the top of first.
What do you mean? The tank is easy to remove. Pull left shock, left frame section, unbolt and pull out. We changed it in the first video. Yeah it flickered on me once
For the outer races that fight u just run a bead of weld around the bearing surface(carefully).it will shrink the race and it will usually fall out. Works really well. Love the v Max's!
Great effort getting that moving ....... Kaplan has a nice vlog (1986 Yamaha VMAX!) with a 4 to 1 Kerker sounds amazing. Keep em coming please and thank you
You Guys are Awesome!!! Great Videos!!!! I have a 1998 and a 2014 VMAX. My 1998 just hit 33000 miles and has notchy steering so after seeing your helpful videos I am going to tackle the steering head bearings. I changed my stock exhaust on the 98 to Delkevic 8inch rounds off ebay for less than $500 and no jetting required and they are loud and make the 98 sound like a small block chevy. Thanks for all you guys do!!!
Great job, guys! (Great burnout, Seth!) B.J. -- the grin on your face when you proclaimed it "not the same bike" was priceless. And kudos on your Revival Cycles "Handbuilt" T-shirt.
Guys Guys Work smarter not harder. To remove the race that is in the frame all you need to do is run a bead of weld in the race and when it cools down it will contract the metal and the race will literally fall out. Works an absolute treat. Give it a try. Cheers.
The v boost controller goes bad. Upon opening up clean the sealant gel off of the circuit board, re flow ALL the solder points. Seal up with silicone caulk (replicating the factory gel). Works for some of us v max guys.
Damn. Always wanted one of these the first time I saw them! First bike was a Yamaha 60 enduro 4 stroke! Ran lots of motox and away from lots of county cops in the '70's! Looks like that VMax is a weeeener!
@@BrickHouseBuilds You guys are great bringing these older diamonds in the rough back from the dead. I miss my riding days and stopped in the mid-late '80's because of a particularly gruesome accident I came up on that involved a motorcycle and a semi tractor trailer. Now that I'm 61, I'm thinking of finding a cheap ride to blow off the dust! Kudos for the awesome work!
I'm sad you gave the end away at the beginning. Great job getting it going though! I did 70 miles this morning on mine and low an behold. I sit down and I'm getting more VMax. It's a good day!
Well some people were pissed off at the last video and said it was a waste of time so I wanted to make sure they knew this wasn't a let down. Most channels put highlights in the beginning anyway. It's like a movie trailer
Well unfortunately I can't cater to everyone. I don't want to put the ending up front but in today's world you get just 5 seconds to hook people or they leave. Not joking on 5 seconds
@@BrickHouseBuilds You don't need to be defensive. Though I would rather not see the end at the beginning I was pretty much joking about being saddened by it. Loved the video and loved the first video. Love what you do. VMax's are awesome. You are in for a wild time. Thanks for saving that bike.
Wow, you guys did an amazing job!! That was some painstaking work and you kept on it. I had a RX1 4 stroke 136" snowmobile that I rolled and it caught on fire. I restored it to running condition and replaced the wire harness. Had no spark for a long time but the voltage regulator had a grey and white wire on it, they got reversed somehow and I just found that out by a fluke of playing with the wires and it came out, then I was like shit, maybe these are backwards! It never ran the same but I did take it out a few times after. Had some issues with the carbs and ended up trading it for a 97 VMAX 700cc red head snowmobile, the 2 strokes never die! Looking forward to your next video, I am sure you will figure it out. Seems in the comments below, there is lots of tips. I like the one about take the exhaust apart and dumping out what might be down there! Cheese from Ontario Canada! If you have time, this guy takes apart the same engine you are working on, has a heck of a time with the flywheel. Part 2 he goes right into rebuilding it, but worn out and says even he can't get parts for it as Yamaha stopped making them for that model of VMAX! ua-cam.com/video/p-YkWu7SY5E/v-deo.htmlsi=4ul1karXYeDp1_mq
On the Vmax1200 you have to have a good solid and charged battery or it will wreak havoc or burn up the voltage regulator. I have owned 3 max's for about 25 years of riding on them.. great machines and lots of information out there to get them ripping up the asphalt. Open up that air box and see how that helps.. if you have not pulled the air mixture screws out and blew thru the carbs with cleaner and compressed air that will clean up that low end and you will me amazed how it helps on running.. but when you take out the air mixture screws take note that when you blow air thru the carb, there are parts that will go launching out if you don't catch them out of the mixture screws openings you will lose them. Hindle made a nice 4-1 and Marks exhaust is another hi quality stainless steel exhaust.
Totally enjoyed the 85 Yamaha VMax content. I still remember reading about it back in my motorcycle magazine days. Especially enjoyed reading about it being the fastest production bike of its time with the late Peewee Gleason aboard at the drag strip. As always, great content. Keep up the great work. How I long for my 1983 Kawasaki KZ1000R - Eddie Lawson race replica. I miss that bike tons. 🥲
Like I said last video, that thing had to have been dipped in a lake or river! Such a cool bike! And grab a 1 1/2 inch pvc fork seal driver! And the 4 into 1 is insane on those, they sound like a V8, love it!!
I cheered when that beast roared to life!!! Spitting who knows what kind of shit outta the pipes, but that beast wanted to growl again! You gentlemen have made an old man's heart happy... LOL!
Freeze it at 55:08. Dude is up in smokes 😆 Took one of these once for a short test ride with the Misses on the back. Twisted the throttle just a little bit and when I look down at the Speedo I was at 150kph. Insane machines
Totally cool and a tribute to your skills and patience and the company you keep to get the jobs done professionally. Again, that speaks volumes. Press on !
Great video, have a soft spot for yamaha bikes. pvc tubes make awesome fork seal drivers in a pinch. I put a bevel on both diameters and cut to length.
DId you get the vboost working? The servo motor should cycle the vboost open and closed when you first turn the key on and I never heard it cycle when you turn the key on. It made a huge difference to the power above 6000rpm. I installed a ignitech unit on my 1985 vmax when the TCI failed and the added bonus was that you can wire the vboost into the ignitech and program the vboost opening rpm with a laptop and usb cable.
V-Max's were pretty fast back in the day. Always had a tough time at the strip with my CBX against one of those bikes, they always had a wicked out-of-the-hole launch that would put the jump on my CBX and I'd have to use my wickedly higher RPM to try to reel it in, great racing! No, I didn't always win in situations like that! Glad to see you got this beast going, it won't disappoint once you get it sorted out! Ride it like ya stole it, just make sure it's pointed in a straight line!! Thanks for the cool content!
The corn field coming out of the exhausts!! 🤣 You guys are so good at fixing stuff you can repair a faulty computer just by having it in your presence 😂😂
An easy way to check the ignition coil trigger wire is to put a noid light on the wire if the light pulses the ecm is working I laughed when my manual said the ecm can't be tested
Had this model a few years back. Missed the rust in fuel tank and nicked a cylinder bore. Rebuilt engine at some cost and same thing happened. Scarey machine when running, especially when the V boost kicks in.
Seems to be a ‘common’ issue on these, Superbike Surgery in the UK had the same problem, his channel’s well worth watching and if you like the Bandit 12 he had one in recently, a hard tail of all things

Great effort getting that moving ....... Kaplan has a nice vlog (1986 Yamaha VMAX!) with a 4 to 1 Kerker sounds amazing. Keep em coming please and thank you
Glad you enjoyed!
The first thing to check on a Vmax is the plug cables, next the plug holders.
Guess you already did that.
But a tip about the Vmax.
Awesome videos!!
Definitely check out part 1 if you haven't already
@@BrickHouseBuilds I did see that first 😀👌
@@BrickHouseBuilds I will put the links on the Facebook of the Norwegian V-max club 😁
good work fellows' i had an 88. i put a steering stabilizer and a billet front fender brace and it tightened up the front and got rid of death wobble.
More top notch entertainment from the A - Team - thanks for all the effort !
Glad you enjoyed!
Glad you enjoyed!
Good call on the wire harness. The best option is to completely remove all the wires and redo it when its been that molested.
Yeah it's best to be able to confirm a connection point being good or bad rather than hope
One of the best ones I ever heard had Supertrapps on it ! And you already know you can tune those ! 😊
Those do sound good!
@@BrickHouseBuildsjoin v max forum. Supertrap slipons sound good but are restrictive losing hp.
Great job, guys! (Great burnout, Seth!) B.J. -- the grin on your face when you proclaimed it "not the same bike" was priceless. And kudos on your Revival Cycles "Handbuilt" T-shirt.
Glad you enjoyed! I was fortunate enough to show the white CX build at Handbuilt a couple years back
Good job guys . Everything will come together. Love you guys. 🤟👍👍👍👍
@@bluesky5542 🙏🙏
Major mouse house in the exhaust pipes. Good luck lads!
Great job guys, try using a straight larger diameter air hose from your compressor to your windy gun, you'll get a massive increase in power.
Guys Guys Work smarter not harder. To remove the race that is in the frame all you need to do is run a bead of weld in the race and when it cools down it will contract the metal and the race will literally fall out. Works an absolute treat. Give it a try. Cheers.
Yup, as i said in another comment the welder is in back but I couldn't move the bike
You haven't lived until you changed 2nd gear on a V Max. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing
Sounds thrilling lol
The v boost controller goes bad. Upon opening up clean the sealant gel off of the circuit board, re flow ALL the solder points. Seal up with silicone caulk (replicating the factory gel). Works for some of us v max guys.
Already tried it. You will see in pt3 this Friday
I have a 82 honda magna and I thought that bike was complicated . v-4's sound sweet. you guys have patience . Good job.
I think the Magna would be on the same level for complication. I need to find a Sabre
Amazing byke guys! And amazing job. Thank you.
🤘🤘
Damn. Always wanted one of these the first time I saw them!
First bike was a Yamaha 60 enduro 4 stroke! Ran lots of motox and away from lots of county cops in the '70's!
Looks like that VMax is a weeeener!
I've wanted to try one for a long time so I had to have this when it came up for sale
@@ddouglas3687 It's very hard to stay motivated to ride when you see that stuff. You took the time you needed which is good.
@@BrickHouseBuilds I'm one of those people who actually likes surprises. I have a 4 into 1 on mine. You won't be disappointed.
This is a beautiful bike. Its the next bike on my list.
🤘🤘
This is a fun bike to ride. I am looking forward to the future mods and getting things better. Best wishes.
🤘🤘
Definitely check out the first video as we did a ton of work to the bike to get it to this point 😁
Nice!! Great to come home from work to see the Vmax is up and running!!
🤘🤘
That was one of the most satisfying videos I've seen in a long time. Nicely done 👍
Glad you enjoyed!
I enjoy riding my 2000 VMAX. Look forward to the next installment on the V-MAX. RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
🤘🤘
Those bikes ran in the 9's from the factory. my roommate I the Navy had one.
It was the fastest production bike made at the time.
nice video
Glad you enjoyed!
Great Video glad you got her going. Mine was never as fast as my buddy's Bandit
It's always interesting how different bikes make power. This pulls hard but differently than my Bandit
I cheered when that beast roared to life!!! Spitting who knows what kind of shit outta the pipes, but that beast wanted to growl again! You gentlemen have made an old man's heart happy... LOL!
Glad you enjoyed!
Freeze it at 55:08. Dude is up in smokes 😆
Took one of these once for a short test ride with the Misses on the back. Twisted the throttle just a little bit and when I look down at the Speedo I was at 150kph. Insane machines
They are beasts!
Not sure how this vid got past me. But awsome video BJ You and Seth doing burnouts. Enjoyed the video and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
I think it snuck by everyone actually. This video is at 1/3 the views of the first one somehow!
We just drilled out the silencers from the pipes back in the day. That woke up the V65 Magna we had. Try that.
Totally cool and a tribute to your skills and patience and the company you keep to get the jobs done professionally. Again, that speaks volumes. Press on !
@johndonlon1611 thank you 🙏
This is awesome, my dream bike is the V65 Magna but really like the V-Max too.
I'm betting a V65 Sabre will find its way to the shop eventually!
had an 85, great bike, loved it.
Great video, have a soft spot for yamaha bikes. pvc tubes make awesome fork seal drivers in a pinch. I put a bevel on both diameters and cut to length.
Yeah didn't have any materials the right size right then
Did anyone expect it to not be knipex? Great video. Knipex strikes again
@@ltmonson glad you enjoyed
these guys pretty chill keep it up
@bokelund9176 Were just having fun with crusty bikes 🤘
Super traps are great
No, they sound ok but are restrictive and lose hp
DId you get the vboost working? The servo motor should cycle the vboost open and closed when you first turn the key on and I never heard it cycle when you turn the key on. It made a huge difference to the power above 6000rpm. I installed a ignitech unit on my 1985 vmax when the TCI failed and the added bonus was that you can wire the vboost into the ignitech and program the vboost opening rpm with a laptop and usb cable.
@@hh3130 Not working yet, trying to source some parts.
Your dedication to the spark make it happen is truly inspirational. Pedia didn’t work loving the dedication.
🤘🤘
So enjoyed that, guys, thanks for bringing us along. Dammmmmmnnn....how much time and sweat!!!?????? Well done, great stuff 👍👏👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed!
This bike definitely launches well so it would put up a great fight with about anything to 80mph I'd say
The corn field coming out of the exhausts!! 🤣
You guys are so good at fixing stuff you can repair a faulty computer just by having it in your presence 😂😂
It was nasty lol. No idea on the computers as I made one worse and the others fixed themselves lol
You're gonna have so much fun once it's running properly!
Try not to die 😬😬😬
@@BrickHouseBuildssome poor little mouse lost his home 😂😂😂
Glad to see the old beast up and running.

megajoult spark box is my go to solution to fix bad no spark issues .made in usa and microsquirt for efi and spark
You could hire that out for weddings, the amount of confetti that came out the exhausts 🎉
🤣🤣🤣
An easy way to check the ignition coil trigger wire is to put a noid light on the wire if the light pulses the ecm is working I laughed when my manual said the ecm can't be tested
Wow. I've been in Missouri barns, I recognize their handy work.
😂😂
Had this model a few years back.
Missed the rust in fuel tank and nicked a cylinder bore.
Rebuilt engine at some cost and same thing happened.
Scarey machine when running, especially when the V boost kicks in.
Thats unfortunate
Greate work guys. Vboost is running? I dont hear the sound (Makes a full cycle) when you turn contact on. Cheers from Argentina 🍻🍻🍻🍻
Vboost is not cycling yet. Today I am planning to inspect the controller for it. Still some kinks to work out
The walk of shame. We've all been there and done that.
At least it wasn't far!
It doesn't sound like it's running on all 4. Burnouts sounded better but it's still sickly
Yeah in the end of the video it had clogged a pilot on the front left. It didn't have much of an idle circuit but the mid/needle and main were good
Seems to be a ‘common’ issue on these, Superbike Surgery in the UK had the same problem, his channel’s well worth watching and if you like the Bandit 12 he had one in recently, a hard tail of all things
Yup, definitely saw it
