Why Izzy Stradlin Left Guns N' Roses + Gilby Clarke Interview (GN’R, Classic Rock Mini-Documentary)

- Izzy Stradlin is the original rhythm guitarist from Guns N' Roses: An integral member of the band who wrote & co-wrote many of Guns N' Roses most iconic songs. On November 7th 1991, he left the band and was replaced by Gilby Clarke.
On July 2nd 1991, GN'R cut their concert in St. Louis short, leading to a riot. A similar incident almost happened in Mannheim Germany on August 24th 1991: Drama is something that followed Guns N' Roses wherever they went. The drama, the personality clashes and the excess all culminated in a newly sober Izzy Stradlin leaving the band in late 1991. After Izzy Stradlin's departure, the GN'R lineup consisted of: Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Dizzy Reed and Gilby Clarke.

Gilby's a real dude. That's exactly the attitude I have and have always felt like the odd one out in my local scene. He's right that the scene is ready for a new band to shake it up.

this guy is so underrated, imagine, he came into a band that had an absolutely amazing and talented guitar player and music writer, and filled his shoes very well.... the pressure had to be immense. great interview from a rocker that has seen how much rock and roll has changed and how it will never be the same

Many years ago I went and saw gilby play at a small club in KC,mo. They sounded great! I was right in front of gilby when he handed me a pick held his guitar out so I could strum his axe while he fretted the neck! Eric Singer was his drummer at the time and a very nice cat! Highly recommend checking Gilby out if and when he’s in your town!
I don't think that there is anyone who has aged as gracefully as Gilby Clark. Other that the facial hair, he still looks the same...if not better and healthier than he did back in the early 90s. Dude is great...and was the absolute perfect replacement for Izzy. It is cool that he got to be on the Spaghetti Incident, as well. Even though it wasn't their best seller and wasn't their songs, im sure the performance royalties were still nice.
especially since he was payed peanuts for his efforts. $2,500.00 a gig. better than working in a factory but ridiculous fer a band of that stature.

In the 90's, I owned 600 albums, mainly from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Some were works of art, I had them on my walls. Gilby has some strong points in this video, usually I get bored with interviews but he's got some points there. Personally, I think the "rock band" aspect of the music industry is dead as well as albums. Back then, there were literally hundreds of rock bands playing live all over the place. It's all gone now, I get it, times have changed.
that could have something to do with the fact the 50's, 60's and 70's were overall just plain BETTER than most anythang after that. MTV taking over the industry and music videos becoming mandatory was the beginning of the end. yer music could suck ass but you have a cool mini movie to accompany it and that sells yer units for you. amazing crutch. proud to say i am working on my third album and though i record digitally (must say i don't miss working with tape at all) i still do it the old fashioned way. as if i'm back in the 70's and i have a career depending on it. and the thought of any music video to go with it never enters my head.

It takes a lot to leave a huge band at the height of its success. I understand why Izzy quit. But that had to be a hard decision.

I saw the 1st Hollywood Rose show at The Roxy ( Not by choice-Thought they were AWFUL!) But a little while after Guns & Roses came out and they got signed. Izzy is what made the band, key songwriter.
One wonders why Gilby Clarke was not taken on as rhythm guitarist for the reunited band's tours. He was in the band during their heyday.

I always think of the clip with Chuck Berry on TV performing with John Lennon and Yoko, Yoko starts her noises and the expression on Chuck's face is too priceless. You can't understate Chucks influence on music, it's just massive and I'm sure there were a few people who came before Elvis in the Rock N Roll stakes including Chuck.

Hes partially right but also a little ignorant. You just simply cant get famous for being talented alone. It just doesnt work like that anymore and arguably almost never did. That being said, i think a lot of young artists these days are conditioned to consider outside opinion and what “sells” or gets engagement rather than what fulfills them creatively which has taken a toll on music quality. I find that streaming services and corporations being greedy are to blame for this. As always, late stage capitalism strikes again.

Rock is done for. As Gilby said there's only 12 notes you can use to create something. Music nowadays is what the record companies want especially the major labels. True artists will tell big companies where to go and go independent to do things their way.
Either that Gilby interview is really old, or he is really, really bad at math
Don't get me wrong I love Van Halen, Bad Co, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer but the newer bands are more extreme in their sound. Periphery and Massugah come to mind. Their heavy songs are brutal. Metal might not be mainstream but it's got a huge following.

So why was Steven Adler kicked out when the whole band was fuked up ?

He couldnt play.
His timing had been off in gigs previous to his sacking and he couldnt perform in the studio.
Gilby was so on point here. If you are a true artist you always need to satisfy yourself first . If you are trying to calculate what is popular, or what is fashionable with your music, you are really just pandering. It's called having Artistic Integrity

Poser hair metal was big. Then, some real ass rock and dudes dudes took over, then when they acted rock and roll we were surprised? You can't have one with out the other. Now, Izzy is the ROCK of Appetite. As a guitarist and recording engineer, I can tell you that IZZY is holding down the riffs while Slash has his "fun" with it. It's a formula that worked but his leaving changed the band so much, I lost interest. No Izzy, no GnR. As far as Steven goes, they replaced tomato sauce with ketchup in your pizza. Naahhhhhhh.

The vibe I get is that Izzy Stradlin left Gn'R because he didn't like Matt Sorum and that Axl Rose wouldn't let him perform more songs on the UYI albums.
In my opinion, those were the main reasons why he left.
Izzy didn't dislike Matt personally. But Izzy said Matt's drumming isn't suit for his taste
A song cannot be iconic - nor can any sound at all, for that matter; only Imagery is iconic - i.e., someone or something whose image is famous to the point of being symbolic (the word Icon - in original Greek - Means image).
Iconic is now the most overused word on UA-cam - and certainly the most MISused. Misusers seem to think the word means simply "widely known,: or "instantly recognizable," etc. Buts just as flavors, scents, ideas, emotions, bodily sensations, et al. can't be iconic, neither can Sounds (songs, bass lines, beats, etc.).
Misuse of Iconic has become rampant due to the UA-cam Feedback Loop - wherein errors are propagated as video-makers parrot one another's speech.

GnR were the last great rock band
its funny bc a great CLASSIC ROCK STATION MMM in Aus plays GUNS and NIRVANA/ALTERNATIVE. I do consider old Guns classic rock but not NIRVANA? I know its a dichotomy but i just felt a shift in the zeitgeist w Grunge/alternative. I do however see Guns as the 1 bridging band from the 80s to the 90s. by 90 Axl was evolving like we were. NWA NIN NIRVANA PEPPERS so i see them ALONE as the bridge. i like some 80s la metal still but not really only Guns bc they areunique
