After over four years of talking myself out of my KD:M fascination, (too expensive, too gory, too sexualized) I finally took the plunge last month. I’m so happy I did. The game is pure obsession in a box. This is probably the last board game I’ll ever need and honestly that’s probably why I avoided it, for fear it would take over my other games.
Nice! I am so glad you dove in and it was the right pick for you! XD - I think knowing how much it will suck you in is a good reason to avoid it for a time. I agree - this is a long video. I did not want to cut it down to much - we could tighten our format (and hope to do so) but KDM deserves the time we gave it.
Love this video. I know you said you wanted a shorter video but I think it's a perfect length. Love to see another in-depth analysis of other games as well. Though I know nothing is bigger than KDM. I haven't bought KDM yet, not because price, but time. I make good money and feel comfortable paying $400+. But sprus and painting just takes time away from actually playing the game
@crushing it Same, but I just caved and paid the $350 for core 1.6. I really don’t like making miniatures (I was annoyed when the latest Aliens game comes on sprues!) but I couldn’t keep reading about how this was the game of games without trying it myself.
I'm about 20 minutes in and I'm really impressed with this video. I'm watching as an established fan of the game already but it's really interesting hearing you guys discuss it in such a thoughtful manner.
Thank you so much - We had a grand time talking about the game and I am glad you enjoyed listening! We hope to bring some more - deeper content for the KDM core community soon!
Love this video. I honestly think KDM requires way too much of a commitment than my life would allow me, but I love hearing everything and anything about it. It’s truly an incredible game.
I thank thats a 100% fair stance to take (honestly it might be the case for me too - but I’m already in denial) there are a few games I can’t get into due to my commitment to KDM - thanks for checking out another video Scotty!
This game is an experience you cannot find anywhere else. It’s a piece of art. And there are moments my game group had with this game, that we will remember for years, because they were so tense or funny. My collection of over 100 other games is collecting dust since I got this 2 years ago, and I bought a lot less other games since I have KD:M. I’m so glad I got into this!
I’m completely with you on this - the stories I have had with my groups in kdm have been some of the best from my gaming life. My review sight has slowed down my kdm and forced me to play other games (I’m ok with that) but kdm will always be special for me.
I first played this about 2 years ago round a friend's who was a backer and got hooked and had to buy my own. I know own all the add-ons and run my own groups a few times a week. You guys have hit the nail on the head with what you say about the game and it's play style good job.
I literally bought the game because of its obscene art and mysterious atmosphere. It gripped me the minute I saw it. Great video. Keen for the hopefully many more strong KDM years to come !
This is the best board game ever made to date. What more, it's innovative in that it has actually spawned a new genre as evidenced by Wild Assent, Aeon Trespass: Odyssey, and Oathsworn. Great video, Quackalope.
@@Quackalope You don't live near pittsburgh do you? You and I have very similar taste in board games and finding a good KDM group is painfully difficult.
Well it has some amazing miniatures! If I’m honest I was sold on the game due ton the art and models before I ever realized what the gameplay was like. It’s a good thing I fell in love with that as well :)
Great video. I’m a huge fan of KDM and I enjoyed watching the two of you gush over it while highlighting the reasons why as unique and incredible as it is, it’s very much not for everyone. Some notes: while I’ve had good experiences with support, there are many who have had really bad interactions, which is unfortunate. Another negative is that buying from the store is a massive pain and is hugely stressful. They have several warehouses around the world that serve different areas and not all warehouses ship to all places and you have to make sure that any one order is only made to one warehouse or they could cancel your order. Really wish they had their store/logistics worked out to make that easier. This is compounded by the fact that whenever the store is updated, things can sell out in a matter of minutes. I actually went all in on the last Kickstarter so I wouldn’t have to worry about fighting for stuff. Positives you missed: I really love the puzzle element of gearing characters out. The spatial element you deal with to activate pieces of gear via affinities. You touched on it briefly but that you can create a unique model that is wearing the exact gear you have equipped with the armour kits. The fighting arts and disorders! The settlement events! This game really is something special, but it’s absolutely not for everyone. I love love love it, but people dropping 2k on an all-in pledge before they’ve even tried it always made me squirm. I wouldn’t really recommend that approach but I suppose the upside is that it seems pretty easy to find buyers if you decide you want out, especially if you bought in at Kickstarter prices. For the record there’s a ton of material to enjoy in the base box before jumping into expansions anyway, and you’re probably only going to use a couple of expansions at a time anyway; this isn’t something where you’ll be running all expansions at once, you’ll mix and match a couple for each campaign, so drip feeding those expacs is easy to do.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to respond so thoughtfully! Customer service can be a mixed bag - and selling across regions is a hard system for everyone in the industry. I understand why Poots is / had been controlling but I agree he could get a team to do better. The store updates are stressful for sure - I used to stay up all night waiting on them. Now I use the white speaker calling app on Patreon - it tracks and calls you when the store updates. Positives we missed - Yes, yes, and yes - Now I need to re-film it all XD Thank you!!
The thing that always really rustles my jimmies is the way Americans talk about KD:M and nudity (Americans in particular because you guy have a real unhealthy relationship with simple naked bodies). While the pinups and promos and such are indeed sexualized and that is their very reason for existing, the game content itself is for the most part not sexual even though it includes bare skin here and there. I would argue that it is quite the opposite, KD:M tries to NORMALIZE the naked body, not sexualize it. The starting survivors are semi-naked to emphasize that they're vulnerable, not "ooh so sexy". And at least with the armor sets it doesn't fall into the category of "higher lvl armor = least skin coverage", though some sets show bit more than others so it is by no means perfect in that regard. The White Lion, Gorm and Sunstalker have either testes or phallus like appendages because they're actual reproductive organs (Did you know that your petdog/cat might have a peepee? Ooh, naughty.) and the world is built by Adam to make sense so of course they have those, I sincerely doubt Adam's starting point for the Sunstalker was "I want to make a dickmonster", the lore just went in the direction of "this monster needs a long appendage for laying eggs". Stuff like the Gorms mouth on the other hand is just there for pure body horror and shock, nothing sexual. If someone considers the very existence of a breast, or phallus or vagina to be inherently sexual, that's your (and your cultures) problem. Guess what you have under your clothes? A naked body, time to get outraged. :P PS: Great review, great coverage, thoroughly enjoyed watching it. :)
Glad you enjoyed watching the coverage and thank you for such a through and thoughtful comment. We do have a strange relation with the naked body in America - fully willing to admit that. I was raised in a conservative christian home and so even nudity or implied nudity was and is taboo in some ways. I tried to address the topic from the side of the critics - making sure to indicate that is is not sexual - just sexualized in some regards. I would agree that nudity does not have to be sexual - however the developed proportions, skin, and outfits (white speaker, bone witch) clearly have some levels of sexualization to them. I don't think that is a bad thing - but it is a think - especially from a US world view. Combine that with the pinups and people get confused quickly - we did our best to address it fairly. Overall It is a topic I see people bashing or avoiding more often. Body horror is certainly a element of the creature design - the wet nurse, the forge god, the sun stalker (as you noted) - again not a bad thing - but something for new fans to be aware of early on.
I'm not entirely sure that I whole-heartedly agree. I think even in the game's artwork the way that survivors, especially female survivors, are presented is often sexualised, sometimes quite overtly. I don't regard that as a problem, because there's nothing wrong with sexuality. I'd certainly dispute any allegations of misogyny, because I don't think that women in KD:M's world are presented as inferior to men, but I do think that the argument that the nudity in KD:M is purely non-sexual is disingenuous and avoids engaging with the criticisms of the art that some people have.
Your excitement for the game mirrors how it has made me feel. I have purchased just about every gameplay expansion current and future that I can and still feel it was absolutely worth the price. Great review!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - I adore the game :) I wanted a review out in the world that was honest and fair, but still from the perspective of a fan.
I love the fact it has so many different art styles, yet each fits perfectly.. This world intrigues me a lot ! (Kinda makes me think of dark souls .. somehow even darker)
Excellent video! I love hobby/lifestyle games and I would definitely get this if I wasn't neck deep in other lifestyle games already. At some point in my life I would most likely get into this. I love KDM's world, concept and execution., it's just brilliant.
@@Quackalope Ha! I'm addicted to *X-Wing* miniatures games, the *Arkham Horror LCG, The Walking Dead: All Out War* miniatures games, … and I'm a sucker for all *Zombicide* games. 😵 What do they say… 'plastic crack' ? ;-) Last, but far from least… I'm a true lover of Heroes System games likes *Heroes of Normandie* and its most recent iteration, called Heroes of Stalingrad. These games are the pinnacle of sandbox tactical miniature war gaming - without the overhead, bulk and cost of the actual mini's (because it's all highly detailed cardboard). This game hits the sweet spot between streamlined modern board gaming and fast and fun miniature battles. As a WW2 buff and Hollywood war movie lover, Heroes of Normandie touches all the right buttons. Full-on action, semi-historical realism, customizable gameplay, a great sense of humor thanks to the movie references and cameos, endless tactical possibilities, stunning graphics, and illustrations, … it's all there. This really is a 'game of moments'. The stream of expansions is endless too… so I see no end in sight.
Probably the most sincere and thoughtful review I've ever watched. Glad I watched every second of it. Never touched a board game of this complexity but you make a really compelling argument. I'm hopeful to acquire the initial box set within a few weeks. Cheers guys.
My favorite game. A few others get close but this still stands above them. I've so much left to go through in KDM that Wave 2/3 can take as much time as they need as long as it results in polish. The stories that come from this game...
@@lordloki5663 A monster can't really "crit" a survivor. Unlike other games, where enemies might do damage within some range of values, in Monster, monsters always do the same amount of damage (e.g., one damage, two damage, etc.) based on which attack they are performing. I'm assuming what @Quackalope meant by "crit" here is that sometimes a monster attack can cause a severe injury to a survivor. This happens after the survivor's armor has been exhausted, and after the survivor has suffered light and heavy injuries, as well. Only then will the survivor suffer a severe injury. And severe injuries can kill a survivor. (This is an oversimplification, but it hopefully gets the idea across.)
This is such a good video! Been circling KDM for the past year or so and can’t quite pull the trigger on the $400 yet, but holy moly your enthusiasm and love for the game is almost tangible. Also, as general comment for all your videos: I’m not sure if you have a written script per se (I’m thinking you don’t). That being said, you are so very good at extemporaneously speaking on things. All the videos I’ve seen have been really professional and really informative and knowledgeable. Really great stuff overall my dude. Thanks for all you do!
Great video guys. Really good job of highlighting the highs and lows. I think most people are incredulous that it can possibly be worth the price, but I think you showed the value that is in the core box. I got into KDM in the 1.5 Kickstarter and have already started picking up expansions. This is a game that gets into your blood. If it sounds like your cup of tea, there really isn’t an alternative for the depth and quality on offer.
I love Kingdom Death Monster. The only thing that hurts about the game, is missing the Early Bird KS pledges. If you miss the bus, you will see a considerable increase in price trying to catch up with the KS. My biggest bug with the game is the lack of a player dashboard. There are too many tokens and markers involved in the game to not have a dashboard to help you organize your character during a game play session. I good example of a well designed dashboard would be the ones found in Zombicide by CMON, their dashboards keep getting better with every new version of the game.
Yea - the problem is with both KS because Poots puts way more into each product by the end of it the price goes up. He almost lost his house on the first KS to fulfill and I doubt he makes much off of each core game at this point - the game is just so big! The KS prices were sold at a loss every time. I get the player dashboard problem - the character sheets and gear grids try to solve this - it is more advanced in a lot of ways so a complete dashboard would be a task to develop. The apps like the Scribe and the updated character sheets are how the community has solved this issue.
I've had a copy of KDM sitting in the shrink wrap since Black Friday that I couldn't decide if I wanted to open or sell. I think this finally put me over the edge and I'm going to crack it open.
Watched a few of your videos, but this one made me subscribe. It's very easy to watch a review of a game as polarizing as this that's given by someone completely enamored with it so it ends up being biased. My real respect for this comes from the commentary from you both, giving the view of someone who this game isn't quite 100% for, as well as someone who went completely into the deep end for and developed a borderline obsession to. Thanks for this commentary, having two talking heads here really drove the main talking points about this game home.
Thanks for this. Great video. I still had a couple of questions at the end, if I might make so bold. How big of a playing area do you need for this? If you have to pack it all away in-between sessions, how long would you say it would take a solo player to set everything up and how long to pack it all away again? Cheers!
As someone who got in a Satan pledge at the last minute, the $1600 was a good price for everything you get/will get but I couldn't never in good conscious recommend getting into this game at this point since it'll easily cost $2000 just for the core game and the current expansions, which will probably double once the new expansions come out. From the very beginning what put me off was the need to have to build the figures, the only reason I decided to pull the trigger was that a friend of mine said he'd do it and of course, we still haven't finished putting together the core box figures and I've had to play with just the empty bases. The argument that prebuilt miniatures wouldn't be as good of quality is a crock of sh*t, there's plenty of recent games with quality, detailed miniatures that are just one piece of plastic. Like the Bloodborne board game. What's also been bothering me is the cult-like status that people have given KDM, with people claiming that they'll never play another board game again, that this is the board game to end all board games and all I can say to that is ease up on the kool-aid. It just seems like the KDM fanatics are so deep in that they willingly ignore some of the problems with the game mechanics and make up justifications for them.
I agree you about the need to research this game before you buy. Thank you for all you do to support the great Kingdom Death community. Your videos are a joy to watch and something to aspire to. This is sure to help those who are the fence make a well informed opinion. I hope my videos on Kingdom Death do the game justice as well.
Hello thanks for the video with lot's of great points. Kingdom Death is my favorite game of all time and is the reason I joined your channel. I'm looking forward to the gameplay videos. keep up the fantastic work.
I subscribed to your channel for Kingdom Death I really like the way handle it. In a world full of annoying UA-cam board game reviews I dig your style... I'll tune in for every video you make on KDM man so please make more...
Thanks so much :) glad you are here and you like our style! We have 3 KDM videos in the edit bay currently! I will have a wide range of media on the channel - but KDM will always be a feature!
This is a very good video so you earned a subscribe from me. I really liked the format. As to the game, I just got in on Black Friday and I am in love with it. It's such a unique experience and you captured that perfectly. Last night, I fought a L2 Lion and was not ready. I was full of dread that I was going to have a TPK and then two dice roles later, I had a lion with a crushed windpipe. The highs and lows are incredible. Nothing I've played before comes close. PS like to see the shout out to the cow nation... Another fun game imo.
Thank you for subscribing! I am glad you like the format - it is going to be a staple of the channel moving forward. Glad to have a member of the Cow Army here in the Paddle!
I love this game so much and this has to be the best review I have ever seen. I researched it massively before taking the plunge but this video sums up hours of other reviews,/ playthrough in one place. Great job guys
Thank you so much :) - I wanted to do a review that showed how much I loved the game - while still trying to be honest and covering the criticism it gets (or why people might not like it) Jan helped a lot with that - I’m glad you enjoyed it and found that it covered the things you were looking for. When I first got into kdm I had a similar experience - I found lots of coverage and lots of reasons why I should not get the game - but I felt like I would love it so I dove in.
@@Quackalope you are very welcome. I've not played for a while due to space and time constraints. I play solo and have just been waiting for a decent push to get me back into it. This video is that push. I think one thing that really surprised me is just how much gameplay is actually in the core box before you even need to begin thinking about adding in any expansions. I threw spidecules in on third run through and it really changed things up. I had dozens of hours invested by then but was nowhere near actually completing the game. Ive had the lion god assembled, painted and ready to go for ages but there is no way on earth I'm throwing that big beastie in anytime soon.
@@leebrown353 I have the same issue - the more I do Quackalope the harder it is for me to table KDM and other large games (part of the reason I am doing a gameplay / how to play series on them) it is a good excuse to play them! The core box has an amazing amount of content in it - way more than I need. I have every piece of gameplay ever made and it is too much . . . but I adore it! Get KDM back to the table :P and let me know how it goes!
Just ordered the 1.6 version this BF for 370$ including shipment to Germany. I will surely join the community! Already bought the Gi-gal-ion and some more white box miniatures for half price .. and some older ones from China .. I am really into the art and ..sexuality of it. lol If only I could get the damn Dung Beetle Knight for a fair price. 200..300€ is just too much. I got the whole Warcry system with many warbands for that kind of money. All the best and very comprehensive video.
I still have no idea whether I want this or not (this excellent and very informative video gave me a lot to think about though), but I love how you turned "coup de grace" into "coup de gras" ("hit by a lump of fat" or something like that). Weirdly appropriate.
I've had the store page open in a tab for around a week going back and forth on it. On the one hand I'm not sure I'll ever be able to convince people to play it with me and I already have a massive 40k painting backlog. Not to mention a huge amount of various games/shows/books etc. to get through. On the other hand I'm intrigued by the aesthetic, find the lore/background cool, the models look really fun to paint and I have the space to leave it out for a long time. Thanks for the video; I'll probably take the plunge for the core set. Even if I never finish a full game the hobby side looks fun enough to justify!
Dark Souls and Monster Hunter is such a good reference. Its exactly what I use to describe this game to friends! My main gripe with this game is the commitment involved if you play with a group. I absolutely love this game, though I feel it suffers from the same problems a game like Gloomhaven does. Ive played regular weekly/bi weekly sessions with groups over the last 2 years and we've never been able to have everyone commit to it - eventually fatigue sits in. Resulting in me never finishing a campaign.
it is the best way to tell someone about it XD - We do best with a committed two player group, solo, or a group of 5-6 people who don't mind missing a session. Keeping it running is the real trick.
Thanks for the video! I got the game earlier this year after debating the $400 for months, and I was amazed at how good of a game it is (and yes, I got 4 expansions on BF already :)).
Amazing review, thanks! Have you considered doing reviews for all of the expansions? I’m shocked how little content there is for this game on UA-cam in terms of expansion overviews/reviews, you seem like the perfect person to do it 👍
I watched this and the other video.when the came out and reaffirmed my belief KDM wasn't for me. I found a used copy last week and picked it up. I am hopelessly taken by all of it. It is interesting to go back and rewatch these videos now. Everything makes a bit more sense from the other side.
A few years late, but this is a great video! Maybe it's just me, but I always think of the Eclipse in Berserk when I see the main board / art that depict the world of faces Edit: I should finish the video. Because you make a direct comparison to Berserk. Lol.
Great video. Always amazing. I’ve been debating about buying KDM for a month now. I’d be playing only solo and don’t have space to keep it out. How long is set up? I’d be looking at Aeons Trespass a little harder If I could find more on the “settlement” phase. I really like the Monster Hunter kill/loot/upgrade armor and settlement cycle of KDM.
Set up can happen in about 10-15 max if you know what you are doing. But it takes a bit to get comfortable with it. I will be covering Aeons :) - excited to see how it plays! I also love the loot / armor system in kdm - if you like the style it might be great for you.
Same here! I already pledge for the core game of Aeons, but I want to play this so bad, the sexualized part of the game is the thing that makes me feel “weird” somehow, I defilement don’t want to make my wife uncomfortable, I’ve been thinking about painting on top of the exposed ones with sharpie lol! - but meh... maybe I am just overthinking it. We need more monster hunter kill/loot/upgrade your people cycle games!
Quackalope 10-15 sounds very manageable. Much better than Gloomhaven or even some Vital games. I’ll be looking forward to your aeons video. Hopefully I get to watch it before the late pledges end.
@@jb_boom The game is not Sexual - however depending on your world view there are elements that are sexy / sexualized (body shapes and clothing) along with Pinups (however you don't need any of them for the game)
Fantastic video with lot's of great points. Looking forward to the gamplay videos. I love the idea of the game and would happily join someone elses game, but the completionist in me won't allow me to even get started with it. That's the biggest factor for me (not to mention time and wrangling people to play regularly). When I buy a game i want to get all of it (even if i know i won't use all of it, which is kind of silly). If this had come out when I had more free time, spare cash and less comittments, I would of loved to get into this as it looks like a more grown-up/gruesome warhammer quest. I hope you guys do another similar video on the other two big games in the background, Gloomhaven and 7th Continent.
I’m interested in the game and there is a used copy available locally. Is a used copy of 1.0 a waste of money at this point with 1.6 being out shortly?
Regarding accessibility... One thing to keep in mind is that this is very much a US-only game. Officially Poots does have non-US warehouses, but he doesn't keep them stocked, so that's a moot point. So if you really want to play this game, and you're not from the US, you better be prepared to pay through the nose for shipping, VAT, fees and all the rest, making an already very expensive game ludicrously expensive. And lets not forget that Poots seems to be a huge fan of using FOMO and exclusivity to drive sales. A lot of what's getting released is sold out within minutes. And I do mean minutes... There are even people who have set up an automated system that will alert them whenever the store is updated. So unless you've got that system running, and you're sitting right in front of your computer, you're going to be missing out on a lot of stuff.
Hopefully the 2.0 version makes the gameplay more streamlined and more welcoming to newcomers. Or perhaps a smaller, "Jaws of the Lion" version of this game, then I would be sold.
Backed the 1.5 KS + a few expansions.. I have yet to open any of it was still waiting on the gamblers box to come in. I’ve considered selling it several times. I just haven’t had the time or energy for the game. I also have a 3 year old... so you can see based on timing why I really haven’t had time for such a big project. By biggest issue w/ selling it is I don’t want to regret the decision afterwards especially considering the steal I got the game for. I was drawn in by the hype and amazing artwork. I really had no idea how serious of a game I was getting into as my newer gaming hobby was really starting to ramp up at that time.
I know this video is about a month old but I just not only found this but your channel!. Already subscribed just off this video. Anyways I am ordering KDM 1.5 even before this video but this is a great video I am going to share with friends to see if they are interested. Unfortunately I am always the teacher in the group so I need to learn everything myself. Where should I go to get information things to buy for the game to make it more streamlined etc? Thanks
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment :) - I am glad you found the review useful and are going to share it with your friends! We will be doing a lot more KDM coverage so stay connected! I should make a video about the things you can do to make KDM easier to play . . . there is a great reddit and FB community that would be more than willing to help! By Lanterns Light is the name :)
I am not too into the art of the game, but I just got to try it for the first time and I really enjoy how it is played. Even with it being unforgiving. Because of that though I decided to late back Aeon Trespass: Odyssey and I am super excited for that and now I will be watching for Primal: The Awakening as well.
If I had the money and the space, I would buy it. Only because of your video. I don't think I would ever do it justice, but if I could afford it I would get it. I'm curious about what your opinion is on Gloomhaven and how it stacks up.
Hey No1 - you need to email me to get your prize from the giveaway video. Outside of that - I’m flattered :) thank you! The game is beautiful and well worth checking out even if it’s at a friends house for the experience. We will be officially covering Frosthaven - so stay prepared!
I got the core back in May for my birthday, and over the course of the year I snatched up all the expansions and all the various holiday swag. The bundle was inevitable. And now we play KDM while waiting for more KDM.
My intro into this game (prologue) was with a surviver named Heldracul landed the final wound (critical hit with Fist and Tooth from the White Lions blond spot) on its fuzzy groin! 😂
great vid, not right for my hobby group, and since i outsource my painting of minis for Warhammer, the price of this game is already up there lol. looking forward to coverage of FORT from Leder Games whens it out, love living vicariously through yall
I love how people always says "the game is hard". My group is so lucky that during the early years we got a 100 roll on a event and we got the hammer, so basically the Char who have it is a killer machine who carry us, dunno what we gonna after she retired, xD.
Hahah - that’s amazing XD one of the many stories that come from the game! Some events are not as hard - but the game as a whole (so when you survivor retires)
Honestly I just found out about this but may have to pick up. Being a big fan of berserk and miniature adventure games this feels right up my alley. That cost though may have to wait a bit. If anyone knows how to save money on this would be appreciated I live in Canada so with that price conversion it really hurts the wallet.
@@Quackalope well, to be honest I basically built a box and the put four legs and a lid on it and painted the whole thing:) but I must say it's so great to have a place to store everything (including all the expansions) except for the minis. And to be able to just put the lid on and "save" the game game between sessions is great when you live in a small apartment:)
Sold pretty much everything else. It's the only board game I play and often solo. It is without a doubt for the best boardgame i have ever played. On price when tour not playing anything else it is worth it plus it's like 5 nights out when you think about I have played this solidly since 1.5 delivered so early got my money's worth.
For me personally, as much as I love the game, the minis and everything in between the major issue that really grinds me are the oh so long delays with waves 3-4. And while I understand that no form of art should be rushed, it kind of makes me feel less eager to receive them. What do you guys think? Oh, and one more thing, although it's only the beginning of the year, I will make the claim that this video will probably be one of the best I'll see this year. Hence in terms of quality of your guys takes on the game and the quality of the video itself. Outstanding!! Cheers from Israel.
I am still excited for wave 3 and 4 - the delays are a bit painful but they are expected. They have kept producing content like the giga lion to keep me entertained - and they always deliver above and beyond my expectations. I am still excited :) Thank you so much for the comment :) - lets hope the stuff we put out in 6 months and a year from know is better than this :P
You're not the only one. I got the core game quite a while ago, but I haven't even gotten the first survivors and the lion assembled yet. Poots' behaviour has really soured my attitude towards this game, to the point where I don't want to play it.
@@Quackalope Based on what I see there already is a 2.0 coming out (essentially), in the Gambler's Box Between Wave 3 and Wave 4 there's a ton of content, and massive changes. Wave 3 is being delayed so long for the extensive playtesting needed, since those changes will later impact the Wave 4 stuff (which apparently will be built on it). Kinda crazy, I mean there's going to be over 40 bosses, and a bit over something like 200 (Core + Expansion only) Minis, for just Armor variations and whatnot? Lol
ok can someone tell me the comparison between breaking the entrance barrier for Warhammer compared to this? ive played warhammer fantasy (while it existed) for 12 years and 40k for the same time. how much harder or easier is it to get into KDM? because obviously warhammer is more expensive but warhammer seems way simpler at the core of the rules being single scenario battles. versus an entire RPG built into an expansive board game with miniature
what really bugs me is the bazillion modifiers you get, and want. it makes determining the outcome of a dice role tedious. you get + this and that but also - this ect ect. i used to play pen & paper rpgs, but i dont remember it that combersome. or maybe ifs because i was young.
Great video. I agree with you that this is a great game but it has some shadows... customer support for people outside USA is terrible. The UK shop is always out of stock and the only way to buy expansions is importing them from USA and paying double the price because of customs... for a game that already is ultra expensive.
I know some groups have struggled with CS outside of the states. I have always had a wonderful experience and I hope that improves for other regions. I do understand how complicated and expensive it can be to ship and sell a product overseas.
My only complaint about this game is the rulebook! Not that it is difficult to understand because it is extremely clear and well-written. My issue is the hard cover. With the constant flipping through for showdowns, hunts, severe damage, rules references, etc., I think a paperback version would have been better. My hardcover binding didn't last very long and now it is in pieces. Anyone else have this problem or is it just clumsy me?
I am very very carful with my book . . . but I can understand your concern / problem. For me - I like the hardcover book a lot - the soft cover 1.0 and the large ring binder in Middara make me value the nice hardcover more.
I love learning about KDM but I don't think it's the game for me. For one thing, the setup is going to be a killer. And I don't have the time to commit to it. Nor the table space. xD I would love to play it if given the chance though.
It’s actually really quick to set up, and for continuing campaigns takes only a few minutes before you’re playing. It’s a much quicker setup than Gloomhaven for example.
Hi, do the expansions add to the core campaign by adding more light-years and new final bosses or do they give a completely new campaign to playthrough?
Great video. It was suggested to me and it really helped me understand that this game is not for me, not by a longshot. Gloomhaven again and again instead of this, thank you.
Barriers to entry... Well... There's the fact that most things are nearly always out of print, with reprints getting sold out within seconds... And that fact that most of what's available is US-only, making this an eye watering expensive game for non-US players. It might be an amazing game, but it's incredibly hard to get into.
I am absolutely not interested in this game, but I love that it exists. The artwork and miniature quality is amazing. But the game's insane. I'd rather just play it as a videogame, but then I also dislike grinding because I find it boring, and I don't have time for it. Still watched the whole video.
Thats a cool view :) - thank you for taking the time to comment and watch! This game is on the line of . . . do I just go play a video game? It wont be right for everyone - but thank you for taking the time to watch!
Also, good video. Especially if the viewer knows little/nothing about KDM. Very informative and easy to watch despite being a bit long.
One of us, one of us, one.... 😈😁
The black holy grail of my collection, nothing more, nothing less. Try it, KD:M is a great piece of board game.
XD - I agree it is the one game I would be heartbroken to loose.
"It will pull you in" is all the insanity of this game!
100% it will :)
Nice! KDM needs someone like you who will host :) - Glad you liked the review!
I literally bought the game because of its obscene art and mysterious atmosphere. It gripped me the minute I saw it. Great video. Keen for the hopefully many more strong KDM years to come !
I did the same XD - We have more in the works!
This is the best board game ever made to date.
What more, it's innovative in that it has actually spawned a new genre as evidenced by Wild Assent, Aeon Trespass: Odyssey, and Oathsworn.
Great video, Quackalope.
I agree :P - it set the stage of all the games that followed it :)
Thank you for watching!
@@Quackalope You don't live near pittsburgh do you? You and I have very similar taste in board games and finding a good KDM group is painfully difficult.
@@JeffreyQProductions I am in the DC area :)
I bought this game solely on the minis, first board game ever too
Well it has some amazing miniatures! If I’m honest I was sold on the game due ton the art and models before I ever realized what the gameplay was like. It’s a good thing I fell in love with that as well :)
Holy shit! That’s like running a Marathon as your introduction into jogging.
Also me 2 years ago gencon: oh that looks neat !!
Positives we missed - Yes, yes, and yes - Now I need to re-film it all XD
Thank you!!
PS: Great review, great coverage, thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
Well-put comment and a well-put response. Props to both of you! Looking in to this game and this video (as well as most of the comments) helped a lot!
Enjoying your guys videos more and more and you are becoming one of my favorite board game channels. Keep it up!!!
So glad to have you here :) - we will keep producing content!
One day XD - thank you so much for watching and commenting! What other games are you consumed with?
@@Quackalope Ha!
I'm addicted to *X-Wing* miniatures games, the *Arkham Horror LCG, The Walking Dead: All Out War* miniatures games, … and I'm a sucker for all *Zombicide* games. 😵
What do they say… 'plastic crack' ? ;-)
Last, but far from least… I'm a true lover of Heroes System games likes *Heroes of Normandie* and its most recent iteration, called Heroes of Stalingrad.
Very thorough review, you raised some points that other reviewers clearly didn't even encounter, because they have not played the game as much.
The best stories . . . I still remember some like I played a RPG game.
KMD the Father of a new Era. I love it, next hope when i get Aeon Trespass: Odyssey it will be his Son!
I should have it on the way :) so we will see!
@@Quackalope can you pls tell me if a monster crits a survivor is he dead? i cant find that in the rules.
Haha - I take some notes :) no script though!
Quackalope My point exactly haha. You’re good at what you do, sir!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! There is a lot of value in that core box - but the number does scare people away!
I'm a long time wargamer and TTRPG player, never really board gamer. However despite that, D&D is my all time favourite game. It's a masterpiece.
I've had a copy of KDM sitting in the shrink wrap since Black Friday that I couldn't decide if I wanted to open or sell.
I think this finally put me over the edge and I'm going to crack it open.
XD oh - let me know what you think! It is such a cool game.
Thanks for this video, it helped me with my purchase of KDM, I would really like to see a play through campaign. Happy to have found your channel.
Thanks so much for being a part of the channel :) - more KDM is on the way! Gameplay should start to drop in January!
Love the high quality of your videos. I, like you and many others am a huge KDM fanboy
XD - Fan boys unite! We try to do things up a level :P
This is by far the best KD:M review out there. Thank you guys.
I subscribed to your channel for Kingdom Death
I really like the way handle it.
I am really into the art and ..sexuality of it. lol
If only I could get the damn Dung Beetle Knight for a fair price.
This is hands down the best review of this game. Your production values are awesome.
Just bought 1.6 preorder.. here starts the journey
I've never wanted to play a game more than this one. I wish I could have it shipped to Japan...
Thanks for the video! I got the game earlier this year after debating the $400 for months, and I was amazed at how good of a game it is (and yes, I got 4 expansions on BF already :)).
Hahah that’s how it works XD - I’m glad it was right for you!!!
Amazing review, thanks! Have you considered doing reviews for all of the expansions? I’m shocked how little content there is for this game on UA-cam in terms of expansion overviews/reviews, you seem like the perfect person to do it 👍
Awesome video about KDM!!
Thank you!
Maybe it's just me, but I always think of the Eclipse in Berserk when I see the main board / art that depict the world of faces
Edit: I should finish the video. Because you make a direct comparison to Berserk. Lol.
This video is like that scene in Dewey Cox “You don’t want it!” “I think I kind of want it.” Anyways put in for 1.6 and Gamblers Chest. Oh well…
57:49 I am a bit board-curious.
Could you share the paint and technique you use for the stone look of your minis?
The stone minis are from KDM at GenCon - I think they have some painting guides online.
@@NoahEMToys I don't think we will have a chance to cover Aeons until the production copy is on the way :\
@@jb_boom The game is not Sexual - however depending on your world view there are elements that are sexy / sexualized (body shapes and clothing) along with Pinups (however you don't need any of them for the game)
Thanks so much :) - Gameplay should show up in January
Yea - I don't face the international issues so it is harder for me to talk about them.
The phone system . . . we my idea :)
Thank you for the video guys. Love the production quality, enthusiasm and genuine love for this game. Watched the whole thing! Subbed :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment - really glad to have you as a part of the paddle!
Great video guys thank you for the in-depth review!
Can someone tell me where I could find the bronze castes of these models I cant find it anywhere
I can’t believe you didn’t show off that sweet ‘squit’ shirt once.
Sorry XD
3 years later, how is ATO compared to KDM in your experience?
If I had the money and the space, I would buy it. Only because of your video. I don't think I would ever do it justice, but if I could afford it I would get it. I'm curious about what your opinion is on Gloomhaven and how it stacks up.
Hey No1 - you need to email me to get your prize from the giveaway video. Outside of that - I’m flattered :) thank you! The game is beautiful and well worth checking out even if it’s at a friends house for the experience. We will be officially covering Frosthaven - so stay prepared!
I sure hope it's right for me, I just went in on the blackest bundle this past black friday after all!
Nice! Congratulations - and if you went that deep I think your are in for something special!
Glad we could point out that it is not right for you :) - thank you for watching! XD I would love to get these pro painted one day . . . one day.
Great video!!! what card sleeves do you use?
I use the American standard Ultra pro I think - check to confirm the size.
This game looks awesome. At this point I don’t have the space to get into this game but maybe later after moving.
One day! :)
Is that footage of the gambler and mega butcher kits from gencon?
Honestly I just found out about this but may have to pick up. Being a big fan of berserk and miniature adventure games this feels right up my alley. That cost though may have to wait a bit. If anyone knows how to save money on this would be appreciated I live in Canada so with that price conversion it really hurts the wallet.
Great video review. I’m ok with the $400 but space could be an issue. Also thanks for mentioning the Black Friday sale too.
Thanks so much for checking it out and commenting :) - space is a hard one with this game . . .
Great video. If someone that hasn’t done miniatures before or paint, would you recommend this game ?
It’s how I started :)
I better get a set of appliances for miniature builds! Any recommendations (again 0 experience)
@@cjpny1455 Most of the stuff I found when building was through the Reddit and BGG community - I know there is a great docuement for beginners!
This game made me build a new kitchen table:)
I just got in a custom wooden box XD
@@Quackalope well, to be honest I basically built a box and the put four legs and a lid on it and painted the whole thing:) but I must say it's so great to have a place to store everything (including all the expansions) except for the minis. And to be able to just put the lid on and "save" the game game between sessions is great when you live in a small apartment:)
The butcher's kick is intentional.
Some of the Ai glitches were found by the community - not sure what was designed and what was not.
I am still excited :)
Thank you so much for the comment :) - lets hope the stuff we put out in 6 months and a year from know is better than this :P
You're not the only one.
I got the core game quite a while ago, but I haven't even gotten the first survivors and the lion assembled yet. Poots' behaviour has really soured my attitude towards this game, to the point where I don't want to play it.
The moment that they release a 2.0 is the moment I go all in
Sounds like a plan . . . but, a long away one!
@@Quackalope Based on what I see there already is a 2.0 coming out (essentially), in the Gambler's Box
Between Wave 3 and Wave 4 there's a ton of content, and massive changes.
Lol
I think you may have just sold me on purchasing a 2nd hand copy of this...
If that’s the case - welcome to the family survivor!
ok can someone tell me the comparison between breaking the entrance barrier for Warhammer compared to this? ive played warhammer fantasy (while it existed) for 12 years and 40k for the same time. how much harder or easier is it to get into KDM? because obviously warhammer is more expensive but warhammer seems way simpler at the core of the rules being single scenario battles. versus an entire RPG built into an expansive board game with miniature
Great video. It helped convince me (with eyes wide open) to finally take the plunge. Thanks! (I think?) 😅
what really bugs me is the bazillion modifiers you get, and want. it makes determining the outcome of a dice role tedious. you get + this and that but also - this ect ect. i used to play pen & paper rpgs, but i dont remember it that combersome. or maybe ifs because i was young.
It can get cumbersome - the Scribe app helps a lot with the accounting work in the game.
How do you get a copy of KDM these days?
This is the kind of game you need a gaming table for xD
Great video. I agree with you that this is a great game but it has some shadows... customer support for people outside USA is terrible. The UK shop is always out of stock and the only way to buy expansions is importing them from USA and paying double the price because of customs... for a game that already is ultra expensive.
I know some groups have struggled with CS outside of the states. I have always had a wonderful experience and I hope that improves for other regions. I do understand how complicated and expensive it can be to ship and sell a product overseas.
Excellent video, gentlemen!
Best review of Kingdom Death on UA-cam 👍
+1 Quack
I love learning about KDM but I don't think it's the game for me. For one thing, the setup is going to be a killer. And I don't have the time to commit to it. Nor the table space. xD
I would love to play it if given the chance though.
I understand that for sure :) - maybe one day! You could always search the community for people to play with!
If you're interested, Tabletop Simulator has a version of the game available. I played it there first before making my purchase; very recommended.
Both in a way.
Great video. It was suggested to me and it really helped me understand that this game is not for me, not by a longshot. Gloomhaven again and again instead of this, thank you.
:P KDM is not right for a lot of people! I am glad we could show that off!
I appreciate that, keep up the good videos! Glad I found you!
Barriers to entry...
Well...
There's the fact that most things are nearly always out of print, with reprints getting sold out within seconds... And that fact that most of what's available is US-only, making this an eye watering expensive game for non-US players.
It might be an amazing game, but it's incredibly hard to get into.
Could you share the App with us?
The scribe
I love the Berserk vibe
100% inspired :) some . . . Directly
It wont be right for everyone - but thank you for taking the time to watch!
thanks
Quack!
Dark Souls the boardgame !
In some ways XD
@@Quackalope I would say more Darkest Dungeon, the boardgame. Dark Souls and KDM are equally offshoots of Berserk IMO.
That's a nice review, but I have to say the customer service (at least from this last black friday) is not outstanding; I'd say it's kind of bad
They are taking steps to fix it and often / always have. I know people have had mixed experiences with the CS - I have always had good ones.
I finished the whole video!!
