It is ALL ABOUT INSULIN. Never count calories, THAT is what messes with your metabolism. It will lower your metabolism and make you put on weight in the long term as your body hits homeostasis. If you want an expert on fasting, check out Dr Fung, (author of The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, The Complete Guide to Fasting, The Cancer Code) a Nephrologist who uses it to help patients with metabolic syndromes, diabetes, obesity, fatty liver, etc, based on medical science and research on humans. Lots of videos on UA-cam and books on Audible.

It’s funny that many people (INCLUDING MANY DOCTORS) say intermittent fasting is extreme, but they don’t express the concern of our eating habits that are killing us as being extreme.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned but would be helpful, I think, to your listeners is that hunger doesn’t grow in intensity with time, that it actually just comes in waves. So if you’re hungry in the morning and drink water and ride that hunger out your hunger will subside for a while, it may come back in an hour or two, but if you ride that out, it will subside again, and so on.

    • @laurasexton8932

This is definitely a drawback currently. As my weight has gotten to a good place the hunger pangs from 530 am to 11 are getting more frequent and challenging. I do 11-7 due to our work schedules. Lots of morning hydration. May need a longer window.

That is so smart. Drinking water, or even coffee or tea, is a good substitute for a snack, and then you will be hungry enough to appreciate your next meal.

@@laurasexton8932 I'm currently fasting from about 6pm-Noon the next day. I have black coffee in the morning when I wake up which helps curb my appetite and then I also like to drink some sparkling water later in the morning. The carbonation really helps to fill me up until I reach my eating window. What also seems to help me is that I break my fast with a light meal (generally a turkey wrap) and I have a larger dinner heading into my fasting time. This way I'm not crazy hungry when I wake up. I hope you can find something that works for you!

Intermittent fasting also supports healthy teeth and gums by having to “wait for your meals,” as you both discussed. My dentist suggested that 3 hours between meals would allow a cycle to run to reset the pH in your saliva and fully process what you ate (it sounded kind of like a dishwasher cycle!). He told me he sees a lot of “Starbucks mouth,” tooth decay that results from sipping sweet drinks throughout day, which doesn’t allow that reset. Great info in this episode and lovely guest!

I found it easiest to "sneak up" on intermittent fasting. I started to eat off smaller plates, eliminated bad things like sugar, soft drinks and juices, crackers, cookies; then stopped snacking, went to three meals a day with nothing after dinner, and then started narrowing the eating window. It is now 9 am-6 pm (15/9) and now I am at target weight. It took a while but I was happier with incremental, rather than abrupt, changes.

I've been doing IF for almost 4 months now. For that time, I didn't lose any weight at all. Then, out if desperation more than anything I started paying attention to my daily calories. And oh my goodness, I was eating way too much in my eating window! I've since been keeping track and ensuring I'm within 1,300-1,200 calories per day and in the first 5 days I lost 3lbs. This is me still eating whatever I want but making sure my portions are the right size. So note to everyone out there: IF won't work if you're still eating too much food. Lol! 😅 IF has been the easiest change to my diet I've ever done.

I watched this interview with interest knowing very little about IF, but I did some research today and see some benefits. The comment was made that it is not easy in the beginning but I thought I would try this evening to stop eating after our early dinner. Well, the evening is hardly over (9:17pm) but I have learned 3 things in just these few short hours. 1) Most of my evening eating is mindless....eat to eat not b/c I'm hungry; 2) My normal nighttime bloat is not present; 3) When one decides to watch mindless television to keep from mindless eating one realizes that every commercial is food related and geared to encouraging mindless unhealthy eating! :) Thank you, Jennifer, for doing this interview and I look forward to continuing my exploration of the topic with a goal of a healthier me on the other side.

Loved this. IF has helped me in many areas of my life, not just my physical health. I've become much better at delaying gratification and being less impulsive and more self disciplined in general. The list of benefits keeps growing (no more food obsession, calmer, smaller grocery bill, more productive, mental clarity, increased energy for exercise and family, and more). I am also sailing through menopause without gaining weight or bloat. Hot flashes are gone. Seriously, my body loves this. I started off with 16:8, but I now prefer 20:4 and one meal a day (includes appetizer, main meal, and sometimes dessert -- a real dessert). I love it. I'm at my high school weight at age 54 and my clothes fit well again. I didn't have much weight to lose, but I was bloated, tired, and the weight was beginning to creep up when I hit my 50's. This has been a wonderful, joyful, peaceful, easy answer. I just wish I could go back and tell my younger self you don't have to do all those nutty, complicated, expensive diets that just wreck your metabolism and skew your view of food. Now nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is bad or forbidden, and my body has naturally started to crave real, whole foods. The food snobbery is real. Now I look at so many processed foods and think, "It's not good enough -- not window worthy." If I only eat one meal a day, then it needs to be amazingly good. I enjoy cooking again, and I love to try new things. I highly recommend it.

  • @mortigan

I think that we have been bombarded with so many different approaches to dieting, that we no longer trust our body's signals. And that's the worst we can do. I was there, too, i.e. forcing myself to eat every 2-3 hours because the approach was said to be healthy, even if it didn't make me feel good and healthy at all. Fortunately, I came to my senses and stopped this nonsense. And what exactly convinced me to IF, is what you mentioned, Jennifer, that it felt natural. Because it is not depriving or forcing yourself, but simply still enjoying your food, just eating in moderation and giving your body the chance to not only digest 24/7 but take full care of other internal processes, too.

I end my eating window earlier, but I'll sit with them and have a cup of herbal tea or green tea. We usually have someone over for dinner or eat with someone else at least once a week. With a few people, I will explain that I'm doing IF and stick to tea. Most of the time, I enjoy supper and conversation, and I'm back on track the next day. I started IF in March or April when I saw your video on weight loss. I have always had high cholesterol and very high triglycerides and I have to take thyroid medicine. I had blood work in December and everything was normally high. In the last few months I lost 10 lbs but the big surprise was my blood work this month. My triglycerides were way down into the normal rate. My cholesterol was still high but my good HDL had gone up to 84 which was about 10 points higher. My doctor was very happy with my numbers. I’m hoping in December they will be even better. I do 16/8 IF and usually that is eating only two meals with a snack in the middle and I quit at 4. I’m never really hungry on this schedule. I’m very thankful I started and Dr Tae had so many good ideas.

This is one of your best interviews. I learned so much. And my son has type 1 and everything Dr. Tae says about insulin in general is true. I hope you have her on again, this is the first interview that I watched the whole way through. I got a lot of tips for my own weight loss and bedtime tips for my (slim) teenage son who is going to bed too late and sleeping all day!

I enjoyed this immensely. I am 64 and thankfully have been pretty healthy all my life. However, I’ve found the older I get, it’s more difficult maintaining my weight. I began IF by accident actually. We were moving and I was so busy getting our house ready to sell, baby sitting, and other responsibilities that by the time I ate, it was around 11 or noon. Then I’d get right back to work and was so exhausted at the end of the day, that I went to bed fairly early. I noticed I was losing weight, then started hearing about IF. Now I’ve gotten back to practicing IF and it’s amazing how beneficial it is! Also, like you Jennifer, I sleep better and I feel so much better both physically and mentally. I love how I can still enjoy my sweet treats as well. I don’t overdo it but I’m also a big fan of all things in moderation. Thank you Jennifer and Dr. Tae! God bless you both!

This is super, just what I needed at just the right time! Jennifer, your questions and Dr. Tate’s answers were outstanding, really the best I’ve seen - for my particular purposes. I especially love Dr. Tae’s description of IF as a “mental discipline.” I’ll be doing the 16-8 IF with you and this lovely community.

This was such a fantastic interview! I started IF a week ago today and what I've immediately noticed is that my energy level has improved dramatically. I'm also feeling much less achy. For those reasons alone I want to continue! And if I lose weight too, then it will be a win-win-win situation for me!! Thank you so much for introducing me to this way of eating Jennifer! ❤️

I love all your videos Jennifer but Dr Tae really was a gem. Would love to see her again! It really is all about common sense, balance and moderation. I've been doing IF for about 4 years but, I'm in my mid 50s and, tbh it was how I was brought up - we never grazed throughout the day, and never ate after dinner - once you readjust to "normal eating" you are there ! ... Thank you both wonderful ladies and looking forward to all your future videos !! xx

Thank you, Jennifer, and Dr.Tae, for an amazing interview regarding IF.
As a 51 year old menopausal woman who has always been in the overweight category, never obese, I wish I had been exposed to this life changing information. As a homeschool mom of four kiddos ages 6-12, I need a plan that works well for this season of life and one that nourishes my family as well…and one that helps instill eating discipline into all or our lives while still enjoying life and special events.
The research based tips that Dr. Tae shared, ie., spacing meals 4.5-5 hours apart and fasting for 16 hours to help decrease insulin resistance are newly found for me. I’m beginning the implementation of these principles today and looking forward to success.
    Thank you again!!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful interview. There were many gems and lots of questions I had were answered. If I think back to my younger years, that is how I ate, but somehow in my early 20's it changed. I have started this journey this past Monday and so far it has been a bit difficult, but not impossible. I don't have much weight to lose, but I need to get down a reasonable amount to where I believe I would feel best, less bloated, and have more energy for my lifestyle and with two children.
