I’m a bit late to this video but I just wanted to mention that I’ve not seen many “diet/exercise” related videos that don’t involve tons of bikini photos or focus on images of someone’s midsection. I think you’ve handled this topic in such a classy and modest way! Thanks ☀️

When I was a teen, IF was just the way I lived my life and I was always naturally very slim. In my 20s, we started hearing about blood sugar spikes, etc. and were told to eat 6 small meals a day to avoid that. For the first time in my life, I started GAINING weight, even though I was never satisfied. I’m so glad updated science has validated NOT eating if you’re NOT hungry. Also, in your 40s, your digestive system will thank you for giving it a break, ha.

My mother has a friend named Martha and her mother Clara lived to be 107!! Amazingly, Clara never lost her memory. They did the intermittent fasting while making the noon day their biggest meal and around 5:00 each day they kept it light with a salad or soup. They always lived this lifestyle along with walking everyday. Great video Jennifer ~ thank you for inspiring us!!!

@@GinaStanyerBooks that’s pretty typical in America. Not quite sure where it started this idea that we’re not supposed to feel hunger. I can remember even as a kid in the 60’s and 70’s that we weren’t allowed to eat between meals so it’s a fairly recent “trend”......maybe starting in the 90’s or early 2000’s.

Cultural FYI: Up until very recently, most farming regions of the U.S. Midwest called their large midday meal "dinner" and the lighter evening meal "supper." For example, "Sunday Dinner" is at noon (or as soon as it can be set out after church). Thanksgiving Dinner is midday or as early as can be arranged in the afternoon. Dinner is the big meal. But the snack meal you pack to carry to school is "lunch." Hardworking farmers expected a big meal--dinner--at noon. My mother and I still use the breakfast, dinner, supper terminology.
Thanks for a very interesting and intlligent discussion! I can attest to excellent success with IF (combined with low carb) myself.

This is more of a class difference than a regional difference. Working class families have always eaten earlier because they need more energy for hard labor, whereas wealthy families would eat later in the evening to socialize, with dinner set at 7pm or 8pm.

I’ve been 18 hour IF for a couple of years and I feel wonderful. I have cancer in three spots and I did it because of your body going into atophagy. Our bodies slough off the bad cells and rejuvenate during the time we are not eating. Becuz of the cancer, I also don’t eat sugar. Cancer loves sugar and when I stick to this way of eating, my cancer numbers remain low. I love not having to hold my stomach in and how I feel. I’m not advocating this for everyone but it surely has many many benefits that I think are a much better way of eating. Thank you for making people aware.

Dear Jennifer. I come from India where fasting is a part of the culture at large, unfortunately no one really explained the science of it. I always saw my grandmother practice this so strictly, and being so energetic till her last days. According to the yogic culture, fasting is performed based on the phases of the moon called 'Ekadasi' (Waxing/Waning of moon). Other types of fasting can be eating just once a day (usually late afternoon), abstinence of an item (usually rice), eating only fruits, etc. You explained Intermittent Fasting very well, thank you for that. I am motivated to go back to IF.

Great video. My advice to people would be to definitely see a nutritionist. It makes a big difference as everyone’s body is different. Yet, my nutritionist had me on a plan where I don’t eat after dinner. I have 2 full meals spaced 3-4 hours apart and healthy snack in the afternoon and then 3 hours layer, a healthy dinner and I don’t eat again probably for 13-14 hours, no night snacking. I never thought of this as intermittent fasting. But I guess it is. It definitely has helped me lose weight and keep it off.

Recently I had a conversation with a friend where I admitted I was just tired of thinking about it. I had already planned to quit dieting (i have been on WW for 3 years) and to accept where I am.
In my 20s I did IF without knowing it. I just never ate until 11 because I just wasn't hungry.

My great grandparents were from northern Italy & dinner was around 4pm. Years ago I struggled with my weight & tried so many diets. When I read that our bodies don’t recognize all of the chemicals in diet foods (I’m an RN), I gave them up for real butter & real foods (think 50 years ago when people ate “real” foods) I began to lose weight naturally. I felt satiated, so I ate less.
Since Covid, I’ve gained about 6 lbs. I’m just under 5’, so 6 pounds on me looks like 20 on others. From experience I know I begin to drop weight when I feel hunger pangs. I think as Americans we feel we should never feel hungry.
Intermittent fasting sounds like a smart way to let our body do what it is supposed to. I’m intrigued. I’m going to give it a try! I also just ordered your first book. It sounds like my type of book!

Yes, great video! I love using Intermittent Fasting as a tool myself, but also as a nutritionist, I've watched many of my clients have great success with it as well. I like that it's fairly easy for most people to implement, and as you mentioned, it doesn't cost a penny either - which is great. I also like how it adds structure to the day without having to be overly regimented about what you're eating, and if you're a nighttime snacker, it can be helpful to have a cut off period. It can also help you eat less overall without consciously trying to restrict your intake since it shortens your eating window. Even just fasting for a minimum of 12 hours can be beneficial and a great place for beginners to start before working up to 14 or 16 hours. And it's not even something that you have to do every single day to see benefits. I have to say that I'm also very much on board with your "snacking is so not chic" policy, particularly the mindless and grazing all day kind of snacking. It seems we live in a culture where at the slightest stomach rumble we have to go rescue it with a snack. Of course, all of the specially designated "healthy" snack foods marketed at us doesn't exactly help the situation, but I digress :)

I have been intermittent fasting daily (but also a 36 hour once a week fast too) since January 20 this year and have lost 35 pounds. Mine is very stubborn weight, so it takes more effort than what you are describing. As for forgoing the carbs, I have seen in my own life and with some others that there is a true carb addiction. One dessert leads to a whole week or month of binge eating. It's like being an alcoholic. It is much easier just to stay away from the sugar to start with. I'm glad you don't seem to struggle with this.

I love the idea of being self-controlled in eating, something I still struggle with and I hate that. Having a special "tea time" with a special decadent snack makes it fun. It helps you feel in control and sophisticated. I followed the concepts in this video in 2021. I lost 14 lbs in a month and my chronic joint pain disappeared. I don’t do intermittent fasting but I do fast the month of Ramadan since I’m Muslim. I believe last year I lost 10-15 lbs without changing the food that I eat (since losing weight isn’t the point of fasting Ramadan. It is a nice side effect though). What I noticed is that since we stop eating at dawn until the sun sets, by the time we get to our meal, we are not really hungry but thirsty (no food and no liquids, there are exceptions for people with medical needs) and I notice that I can’t even eat as much as I thought I could. I was even more productive and had lots of energy. Thinking about what you are going to eat all the time is exhausting mentally 😅
I also just finished reading The Jane Austen Diet and I enjoyed the authors sense of humor as well ☺️

During the school year though I find by the time I get home the last thing I want is a salad for dinner, whereas I love having my salad for lunch at school! I live in Southern Alberta and our winters are cold and long and so to have something that's not warm and comforting for dinner in the winter isn't a reality. When it comes down to it, it's all about listening to one's body and doing what fuels it.

Hi Jennifer, my acupuncturist recommended 3 days of intermittent fasting 14-16 hours each day and 1 day “off” to improve liver function. Have you heard of this option? She recommended sipping bone broth or coffee with coconut fat or ghee if you feel lightheaded during fasting (things that do not spike your insulin). And I think it works well. This, over a short period of time, combined with a “breath to motion” practice-for me, I chose yoga-cured some measurable health issues I was having related to stress. Thank you for making a video on this topic, your insights are inspiring as always.

Oh Jennifer, how I loved this video. I'm 78 years old and need to take off 10 to 15 lbs. At my age I do not want to deny myself of all fats and desserts. In my mind I feel like I have to give up the things I truly enjoy in order to loose weight. I feel guilty when I'm trying to diet and I eat something sweet and feel like a failure because I'm not doing the perfect diet. You have encouraged me so much with your thoughts about not depriving yourself of all those things you enjoy. Hey, at my age I want to enjoy my life and the things I do. I will try intermittent dieting and will let you know how it goes. You have given me the courage to try losing this extra weight and accept being a little naughty . Lol. By the way I'm healthy and take no prescription drugs. I'm thankful.

As a Muslim, I’m so glad to see people taking on fasting! We fast for 30-37 days straight in the month of Ramadan. However, Different from intermittent fasting we don’t drink liquids either. I’ve always wanted to extend my fasting by taking on intermittent fasting too at different parts of the year, but I haven’t done so yet. This is highly encouraging. Maybe I should ease myself into in? It really does change you and help you lose weight. We usually have our “big” meals at sunrise and sundown when fasting. It’s not that hard, the hardest part is no water if anything, but you do get tired and cold sometimes. Headaches also, and sometimes you really miss the morning coffee.
Jennifer, have you found your weight loss on specific areas on your body? I feel like I lose where I shouldn’t and hang on to what I want to lose.

For dinner, we often eat soup. This time of year, I’ll make a vegetarian soup of zucchini, carrots, garlic, onions, leeks, 1-2 potatoes for thickening, then use an immersion blender to purée it. Here, soup is never chunky, always puréed. I’ll serve a bowl or two of this with a side of banquette, and that’s our dinner many nights.

Thank you, for this comment. As someone who has fully recovered from a lifelong battle with disordered eating, I know it's critical to know your sources of information. There are many doctors with popular channels that cover the topic. Though I respect their education, are they experts in the area? What works for some does not work for all. Also, in a food & diet obsessed culture full of extremes, consider a moderate approach to all things. 12-16 hours fasting is moderate. The trend of 18 hrs-several days, I REALLY caution people to consider if this extreme is necessary, or just a desperate solution to an unhappy body image. Be. Careful. Yes!! Simply eating supper early & then not snacking all evening, followed by breakfast after, say 7a.m. is going to yield positive results. But, just know, these results are not proof that a more extreme approach is even better. 👏👏

@@AVega-rx4px Book purchases are always driven by budgets which may be funded by your local jurisdictions or the state. I would suggest getting another person to put in a request for the same title, and that might trigger a book purchase if there's more than one request. Your library may purchase online medical databases, and feel that they have everything covered with that information. Public libraries shy away from titles that they feel are too academic. Talk to the person in your city that is in charge of the health initiative, and partner with them to get the library to purchase more titles. Library budgets are hurting this year as revenues are down across the state due to the pandemic. I'm so glad to hear that you support your public library!!

Excellent video Jennifer, very well put together. I've been accidentally practicing intermittent fasting for several months. I've notice inch loss the most. I don't own a scale (numbers mess with my mind😝) I saw a dear friend last weekend in person for the first time in months and she said boy your face is not nearly as puffy. Omgosh what are you doing? I had not noticed any change in my face. I suffer from a chronic inflammation issue and I have to take prednisone several times a year so I'm not hurting. It dawned on me I've been doing I.F. the inflammation is leaving my body, hence the bloated, puffy look is not there. I haven't been on prednisone in 7 months just as long as I've been diligently practicing I.F. I haven't had to take and the pain is greatly reduced to almost nothing. I feel pretty darn good. I will use this method for the rest of my life. 😁🌷

I tried it for a short time, but then “fell off the wagon.” When I followed the plan, I was thrilled to find that even as a 63 y/o woman whose chronic migraines prevent her from exercising regularly, I was able to lose a few pounds when nothing else had worked. However, subsequent attempts to get back on the plan have failed b/c I get hungry late at night and can’t fall asleep with a growling stomach. I usually succumb by having warm skim milk with honey and a graham cracker (or two!) or sometimes just half of a banana. Then, when I wake up, I’m starving and can’t wait to eat. Did you encounter this problem? Of course, I imagine that with 4 children and running a beautiful house and a thriving business, you probably don’t have any trouble sleeping, no matter what! I think why not snacking is so helpful for weight control is that it's doesn't keep the stomach stretched, so when you actually have a meal your going to feel fuller without over eating. If you think about those hot dog contests those contestants actually train by stretching their stomach muscles before the competitions so they can fit more food in a short amount of time.

I was born and I grew up in Saudi Arabia. Lunch is our main meal of the day as well. For dinner, we usually have something lighter than lunch. Although, we have our dinner very late at 8-10 as night life is very important because of the heat during the day.

What a lovely perspective, Jennifer! I’ve been trying to reconcile my desire to shed the extra 30 lbs I’ve gained over the past year with my general disdain for the diets/weight loss programs I’ve encountered. This might be just the solution for me as I love your philosophy of savoring food (and life!). And, well, who can argue with Jane? 😉

I'm going through a time of high stress at work. My hair is thinning, my blood surgar went up, my blood pressure was higher. I have made a very hard decision to give up some of my job. But, I am slowly seeing a change in the blood pressure and blood sugar. They are slowly falling. I'm going to try this process. Thanks for sharing.

Almuerzo (2pm) is our biggest meal of the day here in Peru. We love it...the only problem is when we're in the US and everyone invites us over for big US dinners. 2 years ago I started fasting till lunch the next day when we had a big, later dinner. Then we could keep our big lunch tradition, and still enjoy those visits (with those wonderful dishes we hadn't had in a while). At 50 I;ve also experimented with lowering sugar intake...not to 0 but 25-20 gms a day....really keeps me on track, and I don't have to worry as much about everything else I eat. Did NOT know there was a Jane Austen diet! loved hearing about that too! GRACIAS!

The way I approach the word "diet" is that it's simply what you eat. Everyone has a diet, be it good, bad or somewhere in between.
For children, I think breakfast is so necessary because their metabolisms are so different from adults. When I was in primary school, we didn't have snack time, so breakfast was essential for the mental strain of school work

I love the idea of having structured eating patterns, well that and structured patterns to our days in general. My doctor recommended IF for my type 2 diabetes and keeping my blood sugars in check. I've been doing it for 18 months. Some days I snack a bit too much during my eating window, but I'm learning to eat more structured meals, at set times that work for me, so that I don't feel "snacky" and I can get by with one small, planned, snack each afternoon instead of eating everything in sight.

I love that you didn’t worry about this during your time getting pregnant and when you had your babies - I think that is so healthy, and also that you don’t cut out a food group like so many diets rave about today. It seems very sensible. I hope many people see this video 🙏 you looked stunning and healthy before but look gorgeous now and very chic. I will try this although I’m not trying to loose weight but have some IBS, I’ll have breakfast at 11 as I have supper at 7. I do like eating when I wake up though when I’m in my dressing gown 😬 thank you Jennifer xxx

I WONDERED how you ate like you do and stayed so small!! I thought you must have a FANTASTIC metabolism!! Now I know. I'm off to watch the TedTalk you referenced. I'm tired of having a bad relationship with food. Thanks!!

I thoroughly enjoyed your video! I was thin when I was young and my mother had our biggest meal about 1:00 PM. No snacks. The method you described really does work. Since you have now reminded me, I will return to that lifestyle. Thank you for this video!!

What an inspirational video to make it a lifestyle rather than a fad. As a mom who has just had her last baby I hope for similar results. Way to make the best of quarantine
