I am French women, living in Canada since 6 month. The food cultures and habits are opposite. I taught to my children: no snack, take meals together sitting down. Very low sugar, no sodas. Here I see people eating at any Time, snacks, fast food, eating while walking, working … It’s a big challenge for my kids because the want to do like there friends. There are so many food temptation here !

I just avoid extremes in diet, as in everything. As a Greek, I strongly believe in “everything in moderation”. I get hungry in the morning and at mid-day, so that’s when I eat. If I do get hungry later, which doesn’t happen often, I have something light and small, like a cup of soup. I know I don’t like sleeping on a stuffed tummy. When our time is unregulated by anything like work, commute, etc., my husband and I discovered that we prefer to eat dinner by about 5 pm. It’s cooking and eating those huge dinners that he wants after work, at 8 pm that put extra weight on me; if I make salad, lasagna, garlic bread, veggies and dessert, it’s hard to not eat any of it! Even eating tiny portions of each thing didn’t work. As a single woman, my dinner was always a cup of soup, and I was very skinny (after a moderate breakfast and lunch). I think eliminating sugar and strictly limiting carbohydrates are the most important things, along with daily exercise, for weight management. I lost 50 lbs. since giving up all grain products and starchy vegetables, I had already given up sugar completely.

My husband’s first reaction to the “study” was, “hmm….I wonder who was funding that one…”
I usually become very alarmed by bad news, and tend to err on the side of caution. But when I read that headline, and, like you, dug a little deeper, I didn’t end up giving it another thought. I KNOW that IF, when done properly, is doing my body a lot of good. No one can tell me otherwise.
I have to wonder, too, if some of the strings involved here are being pulled by good old Big Pharma. Perhaps they are a little antsy that so many people are deciding to take their health into their own hands rather than be failed yet again by our broken medical system?

My husband is a GP here in the UK, diabetic patients are having to go without their Ozempic medication BECAUSE celebrities are buying it up, a shortage of the medication here is putting patients lives at risk! Crazy world we live in don't you think? Sharon Osborne (a celebrity) has lost too much weight and now does not have control over her body, doctors do not know why this is! Having worked in Clinical Research for 15 years I do feel qualified to have a definitive opinion on this matter. Intermittent fasting is to me, as a slightly older person, another version of eating only when you are hungry ie. skipping breakfast but eating normally the rest of the day, I know many people who do this and are naturally slim. I do concur however with the positives of IF and the intricacies involved of eating the right nutrition etc. etc.

As far as the “study” in the reference article goes, I didn’t really put much stock into it because there was so little real data. Jennifer- thank you so much for this wonderful content. I read Mindy Peltz book “the menopause reset” And what I understood from that book is that women can always do 16/8 no matter what time in the cycle - but instead is not recommending longer fasts like OMAD or 36h fasts during the week prior to menstruation. Hope that helps!

Despite my recommendations, cooking and influence; she eats the standard western fast food/processed food diet, no veg at all and only an occasional apple. What should I do without making a big deal? I don't want to push her to an eating disorder or undermine her self esteem. I do worry about diabetes and hypertension because she is overweight. Essential hypertension is in our family history.

Go and look up Dr Stacy Sims, she specialized in women and also perimenopause and beyond. She does not recommend fasting in menopause, however, do your research and see what works for you. All doctors really emphasize a good amount of protein intake entering perimenopause and beyond as muscle loss in women after 40 is quick and hard to regain.

Thank you for this conversation and asking the good questions :) I've been doing IF for a couple of years now and for the first year I was on Trulicity (a dulaglutide) for a pre-diabetic condition. I lost almost 100 lbs. with this combination - no I did not die, no I did not have any adverse effects and no I did not have any personality changes ;) It did work, but it also helped my pre-diabetes and I am not considered at risk anymore, my A1C's have all been normal for over a year and I feel great - so much better than I did when I first began. My doctor and I decided to take me off the Trulicity because I was stable and the cost was incredible, even with insurance the copay was over $200 a month, and that is just not sustainable. I have gained a little back since going off even with continuing the IF - maybe about 10-12 lbs - it fluctuates. My doctor is happy with this but I feel kind of frustrated because I'd like to lose another 20 lbs., which would not be too much for my body type. It was good to hear you both talk about this issue and to talk about the intuitive nature of IF, and also about the supplementation. I learned a lot and I will be tweaking my routine - I like routines too like you do :) But I found this so helpful and supportive, thank you so much for continuing this conversation.

Dr. Mindy has said that the reason why we crave chocolate is because it has magnesium, which is calming, and helpful for the increase in progesterone, the calming hormone. Once progesterone peaks, that’s when we start to bleed. Therefore, it’s good to be mindful of the hormone-supporting minerals. So instead of binging on chocolate, maybe have a small piece and add a handful of almonds for more magnesium.

Someone asked the same question to a nutritionist I was following on UA-cam, and she dismissed it as basically women are hungry and need comfort food so they don’t have to fast if they don’t want.
All I want to know is does fasting throughout the entire cycle mess up my hormones.

This was such a nice interview. Thank you to Dr. Tae. I will add that it can be helpful to know that if you are even 5 lbs overweight when you feel that low blood sugar happen during a fast to tell yourself that within a few minutes your liver is going to donate fat to raise up your glucose and if you take juice or sugar water you will be stopping that from happening. We don't really want to stop that bc that is how we heal a fatty liver is by getting that fat donated. If we take sugar every time we feel a little uncomfortable we are teaching our brain there is something to fear from fasting and we won't get very far with it. Unless you are underweight and fasting then you can trust this is the process of how the body rids itself of excess fat. It's a good thing and the feeling will usually pass within 10-15 min. If you have a continuous glucose monitor you can watch this process in real time. It's quite fascinating and reassuring. Try and get your attention on something else and sit down if you feel a little dizzy and watch your amazing body do this amazing thing.

Dr Mindy Pelz recommendation of varying fasts has been so good for me. Due to shift work it is very hard if not impossible to establish a 16/8 routine. Ive watched some colleagues struggle with lining up meal breaks within their eating window and it can become disruptive in the workplace. Varying fasts takes all the stress out of it and the results have been just as good as a routine 16/8 method.

Jennifer thank you for doing this video. You touched on something so important in this video; intuition. The older I get the more I live my life this way. I am not currently Intermittent Fasting but when I was if I was hungry after my eating window had closed I would eat. It didn’t happen often and usually was during the week before my cycle. I learned to trust my body. If I am craving a particular food I would look up the vitamins or minerals in that food and sometimes would replace whatever sugary or salty snack with a better alternative that contained that vitamin/mineral. At the end of the day we are animals and our body will tell us what it needs. We just need to listen, understand and make the best decisions for us.

can IF help my type 1 diabetic husband who has a non-functional pancreas & is on an insulin pump?
#2 our 15 year old son has always struggled with weight & portion control. How can I best encourage him to limit the amount of food he consumes? (especially when out with friends)

Children learn by example. Provide a home culture that is focused on the positive reasons why you only bring in nutrious foods into the house, with a couple of exceptions, nothing is good in extremes. Balance is key. Definitely do allergy testing for everyone in your family, that is a good place to start since you seem to be mindful going forward.

Jennifer, haven’t you always eaten 4 times a day, including your teatime treat? I’m curious if you were really strict in the beginning eating only 3 times per day without a teatime treat or have you always included that particular snack? I know you are a big advocate for not depriving yourself. Thanks and have a great weekend?

A ridiculously unprofessional study that shouldn't have been published...

It wasn’t a study done by the American heart association. It was done by a participant at the conference. And the American heart association had disclaimers at the bottom. Not their study.

In the uk they would not entertain doing your bloods at all only privately

Oooh I’m curious! How would one do it privately? As far as I know here in Tennessee you have to go get your blood drawn at a lab and specifically tell them you want a certain kind of testing that goes deeper than normal and surface level. I forgot the name of it. 🫤 I haven’t done it yet but I sure would like to!

I am like you in that I like routine and have a difficult time varying my fast but I do just listen to my body and I notice that I’m often hungrier (not always) during the times of the month that Dr Pelz says to scale back on IF. If I’m hungrier at those times I’ll listen to my body and allow for an extra snack if I feel like I need it. I’m mindful about when and what I eat though. I disagree about the multivitamins and while I like a lot of what she has to say, I am hesitant to trust everything because she is still a medical doctor trained by medical schools in a country where they want us sick and on pharmaceuticals

We loose or gain weight by ingesting less or more calories than we use. The when does not matter.

That can work very well in one's twenties and perhaps thirties, but since we lose muscle as we age, we become increasingly unable to burn the same amount of calories. To follow "calories in / calories out" becomes metabolically unsustainable. Less and less calories would have to be consumed as the years go by in order to maintain the desired weight.

@@DiS5064 so, how do u maintain the desired weight?

@carolinajackson7621 I have found intermittent fasting to be very helpful. 16/8 is fantastic for me most of the time, and I really just make sure I count macros if I count anything at all. Lower carb meals taken three times a day and plenty of good filtered water and herbal teas outside of my eating window works for me. I do walk after lunch or dinner as well as try to weight train 2-3 times per week.

@@DiS5064 Many people lower their calorie intake with each passing decade, but the real helper is exercise. As we age we lose muscle, so aerobic and resistance exercise helps burn more calories and preserve the muscle, which in itself burns more calories than fat.

@wendygaonach3908 it sure does! And nothing replaces exercise either. Intermittent fasting can be an awesome tool but its many benefits are only compounded with exercise. I really love using both along with a healthy way of eating, whenever possible.

Great information from an actual physician- not a chiropractor or other health practitioner labeling themselves as a “dr” without even understanding biochemistry or pathophysiology.

IF is just a means to get to a calorie deficit. There is nothing magic in the fast that causes weight loss. But can be very effective!
