"Many's the person missed the opportunity to say nothing, and lost much because of it."
Fun Fact: Theatrical directorial debut of Colm Bairéad.
Honors And Awards Fact: The first-ever film in the Irish language to be shortlisted for an Oscar (Best International Feature Film).
Historical Fact: A radio commentator in the background can be heard mentioning the name of Michael O'Hehir. O'Hehir was a hurling, football, and horse racing commentator and journalist whose career spanned from 1938 - 1985.
Driving The Point Home Fact: The sound of a cuckoo can be heard during the beginning and end credits. The cuckoo is known for laying its eggs in the nests of other bird species and letting those birds raise the young, rather than raising the young itself. This mirrors the story line of the film.

I like that you threw in a trivia fact in relation to hurling. Really amped up the Irishness

@@IrishGuyReacts Colm Bairéad also wrote the screenplay, based on Claire Keegan’s long short story “Foster”. Colm’s wife, Cleona Ní Chrualaoi, produced the film under the title, “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”. I first saw this wonderfully beautiful and touching film a year ago when it was released here in Canada, and it’s lingered in my mind ever since. A few years ago, I retired after spending forty years working with children-at-risk and their families. “The Quiet Girl” brought back many bittersweet memories of the kids and parents I used to work with. One of the foster parent families I used to visit often even ran a dairy farm, just like the Kinsellas. I miss those days, which is why I recently started working with kids again as a volunteer at a local elementary school
I agree with you that Cáit comes to form a different, probably deeper bond with Seán than with Eibhlín as the film progresses. Partly it’s because Cáit already has some sort of positive relationship with her mother, Mary, tenuous though it may be. When Cáit first meets Seán, she gazes at him in wonderment; she’s never seen her own father-or possibly any man-help his wife set the table for lunch. And as time goes by, I think that Seán and Cáit come to realize they are kindred spirits. Both are quiet, essentially solitary, independent, and self-sufficient individuals. As scenes such as the one where they are silently eating lunch together illustrate, they can be together without feeling the need to talk. The lesson Cáit learns from Seán is that she is not alone in the world, that there are other people like her. Most importantly, she knows that she is loved.

“An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-should have won that Oscar for Best International Film last year. It was simply a much better, more memorable film than “All Quiet on the Western Front”. I saw “The Quiet Girl” four times at the local cinema. Once was enough for “All Quiet” etc.

Gorgeous film - watching this young girl and the couple find a sanctuary with each other was moving and made you feel a type of peace watching them build a family . I HIGHLY recommend Arracht to react to as well - that movie is sublime and the best film that depicts the famine in my opinion.

Yeah, the tranquil atmosphere of their dynamic was a real pleasant watch. Thanks for the film recommendation . I shall put it on my watchlist. Had never heard of Arracht but sounds like an interesting watch from reading the premise.

I saw this gorgeous movie live about a year ago when it hit the States. Everything is perfect about this film. Catherine Clinch is a natural. Side note… the title character is the daughter of one of the original Celtic Woman members- Meav mi Mhaolchatha. Talent must run in this family. Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful review.

Great reaction to a little masterpiece imo.
I've watched about 130 of the movies released in 2023 (in my country, France), and to my great surprise, The Quiet Girl remains number 1 (the rest of the top 5: Aftersun, La Montagne, Reality, Babylon). Everything about this films is quietly perfect, starting with the cinematography. And I cried like a little girl at the end, it hadn't happened to me since Manchester by the Sea, like six or seven years earlier.
"It's all about the little moments", as you said.

Glad you enjoyed the reaction. Nice to see the film get some appreciation. Unfortunately, it wasn't one of my more popular reactions.

This is an older movie (and you may have trouble getting ahold of it) but "When the Whales Came" is a really good tv? (unsure whether it's a tv movie)
film. Also "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" - another really good movie.

    Good choice of movies!
Are you familiar with a couple films that depict different cultures such as: Whale Rider & The Kite Runner?

The Kite Runner I've heard of but not seen yet. Whale Rider I haven't heard of I must admit.
