- The Quiet Girl (Irish: An Cailín Ciúin [ənˠ ˈkalʲiːnʲ cuːnʲ]) is a 2022 Irish coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Colm Bairéad. Set in 1981, the film follows a withdrawn nine-year-old girl who experiences a loving home for the first time when she spends the summer on a farm with distant relatives in Rinn Gaeltacht, County Waterford. Thank you for reviewing this. It's so overlooked but such a beautiful and special film. As an Irish speaker it's so important to show that movies in Irish can touch people all over the world.
It was such an amazing film! I want as many people to see it as possible! I feel like as an American I see a lot of people overlook amazing films from other countries that are so beautiful and impactful! I try as often as possible to use my reviews to highlight those films!
I am from Argentina and when the movie ended I told my wife, if this movie was made in another country the parents would beat the girl and the girl would find out that the new family she went with actually killed their son, and she would also have superpowers.
I was deeply moved by this film. There is a quiet kindness seen on screen that feels so authentic and that is pretty rare these days, and while the story is simple… it resonated emotionality with me to the point where I was reduced to tears. We can’t choose our families, but we can choose who and what we love. Just beautiful and one that will stay with me.
Agree with everything you said. I've only grown fonder of it the more I think about it.
The Quiet Girl is one of my Top 4 favorite films of all time. I've seen it 6 times so far. Thank you for adding your voice to the conversation. I hope many more people will discover this beautiful film in the coming weeks.
I could see it making my top films of all time easily. Such a beautiful experience. I'm hoping the Oscar's get more people to check it out!
Same for me! One of my favourite movies.
Seen the film 6 times😊!! Have you read the book.. If not YOU MUST. Its an easy read, short and Well written
i love this film as well. I've seen it 3 times. What are your other top 4 films?
What are your other three?
I read the novella “Foster” by Claire Keegan upon which the film is based. I was overwhelmed with emotion several times though the book is so short. I plan to watch the film but have not yet done so. Thank you for posting about it.
I didn't even know it was based on a novella! I will definitely be reading it! Thank you for that info!
It’s a short read. But I suspect that like me, you’ll read it slowly savoring every phrase.
@@schwamar I just put a copy on hold through my library app! I'll let you know what I think as soon as I read it!
This movie was amazing. The director's tecnique was flawless. That final scene, still can't forget. It was so basic.
I completely ageee. It's a beautiful film!
Thank you for the great review of The Quiet Girl. I can't remember the last time I was effected so emotionally by a movie. Absolutely Top 10 as you say. As you alluded to, it also reaches down and pulls out memories of my youth, both good and bad. The story is so real and timeless. The director and characters are all excellent in their portrayals. I know this is a belated comment but I just discovered it, and so glad I did.
I really appreciate it. The movie profoundly impacted me in a way not a lot of other films have in my life. I'm glad you were able to find the film and that it made that level of impact.
If you havent seen it I would highly recommend watching the film Aftersun from last year. Very similar thematically and had a big impact on me emotionally as well.
Thanks again! I will watch Aftersun on your recommendation.
Thank you for your review. I found the scene where Cait's mother was brushing her hair and saying I would never leave you with strangers if you were mine beyond touching
That scene broke me. It was such an amazing movie!
A really good film. I cried at the end. Made me think of all the crappy parents who have kids who don't appreciate them versus the people without kids who would be great parents. The good parents lost their only son meanwhile the trashy parents had multiple and another one on the way. So sad how they had to give cait up at the end and then how she chases after them as they are leaving. That broke me.
It was so tough to watch, but sadly indictive of real life. So many good people don't get what they deserve. It was such a beautifully told story.
Do you think that she got to live with them, or the father took her back to the house?
@Charlie Osko I think the father took her back to the house. Unfortunately that's the harsh reality of life. But I'm glad it's open ended to look at it either way.
A lot of times kids can help a person as a new parent, get out of their self absorption. To be a good parent you pretty much have to and then some women just don't have "the mom" gene.. I was a single parent and my quality of life went way up when I began to raise my daughter.
@@charlieosko4151 At best, maybe a month in the summer
It should have also been nominated for best picture, period.
Completely agree!
A real shocker for me. Loved it and had no idea what I was going to see. Your review captures my feelings perfectly. The cinematography, choice of lenses, depth of field, camera movements and lighting are the best I’ve seen in ages. Reminded me of Terence Davies.
Absolutely brilliant. I havent stopped thinking about it since I watched it. Definitely one of my favorites of last year.
Oftentimes a movie or director will be compared to Terrence Malick. Here I think the comparison is merited. The use of light is phenomenal! A truly lovely and loving film!
Just discovered these reviews and have a lot of catching up. So many wonderful films that have been overlooked finally getting their due (The Quiet Girl, Nitram, Kill List). Thanks for your insightful passion. Much needed. More, please!
Thanks I appreciate it! I try to cover films of all genres and varieties, especially ones that don't get enough praise! Glad you're enjoying them!
This film was really quiet, elegant, beautiful. I shed some tears at the ending scene. It was incredible. Thank you Nate for you great review and words
The movie definitely moved me to tears multiple times. You're welcome! I just want more people to know it exists!
@@natesfilmreviews this was especially good to watch alone in the theaters. No distractions of any kind
Finally just watched it, today. Incredibly touching film...not ashamed to say I shed a tear (or two).
Oh for sure. I've cried every time I've rewatched it. It's a masterpiece.
Its amazing, I saw it a few months ago and still think about it. A very affecting movie that stays with you. And the acting performance from the young girl is exceptional.
Completely agree. I havent stopped thinking about it since I watched it and I feel like it's a movie that would be easy to get more out of with multiple revisits.
@@natesfilmreviews also, not sure if you know but the film is based on the acclaimed short story Foster by Claire Keegan. It's available to read for free in The New Yorker if you Google it. Its written from the perspective of Cait.
@@alzer6467 I am definitely going to check that out. Thanks for letting me know!
It should be seen by more people. Definitely,a top ten movie. Very subtle, but powerful.
Completely agree!
I read Foster this past weekend, saw there was a film adaptation and immediately watched it...bawled my eyes out at the ending and have watched the whole movie multiple times since - I got my wife to watch it with me last night and she loved it as well. Like you mentioned, despite it being a very understated movie in terms of the action taking place, every shot feels like it is packed with significance. Even knowing where the story was headed having read the book I was still just as rapt watching it play out. The casting was perfect, and I love Keegan and Bairead's decisions to keep the ending open for interpretation. I'm part of that group who have seen it jump into my personal Top 5 Films list.
Thanks for this review, you captured it well.
Totally agree with everything you said. I read Foster shortly after I watched it and I'm really impressed with how much they were able to expand on it. Truly one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.
You have done this superb film justice. The young actress is reminiscent of Mary Badham playing Scout in "To Kill A Mockingbird."
Thank you! I most definitely can see similarities in that comparison!
The style of this film reminds me of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Distant”
Little dialogue and long shots of normal day to day events that become poetic. The Quiet Girl definitely reminded me of Aftersun as well. Thanks for your review
Youre welcome! I need to see Distant!
Although I live in Buenos Aires, while I was watching the movieI felt I was living in that rural house with Cáit and the couple that helped her so, so much!!
Agreed! They made it so relatable in such a beautiful way.
The day after I saw The Quiet Girl I made it a point return to the theater to see it again. Of course. I have a still of the girl looking up to the woman in the dress shop who's handing her a new dress which I plan to print and hang in my home as representing awakening gratitude.
I've seen it a few times now and I love it more every time I see it. That is so cool!
That's exactly what I thought. Without the gimmicks you see in today's movies.
It was brilliant!
So far, The Quiet Girl is my favorite of the year next to Aftersun. Edit : I wrote that comment as I was only starting your video, and now I hear you praise Aftersun... ^^ These are two very different movies, in terms of directing, photography, editing, and even thematically. They're "just" both intimate dramas centered around a little girl played by a brilliant young actress. AND... they're both masterpieces. TQG may be even better because the last time I had teared up in a movie was seven years ago, with the equally masterful Manchester By The Sea (like in TQG's case, I was already emotionally super involved twenty minutes in ^^;). You summed up its strengths well. It's visually stunning, and while the dialogues are totally fine (the intrusions of the English language are pretty smart), many scenes would have worked without them because of how visually well-thought the film is. So in sync with the actress (how good was she again). Those shots of her running! So primal. Anyways. Good review. :D
Appreciate it! I agree! I enjoy films that can convey the authentic human experience in a non glamorized Hollywood way and both films do so tremendously!
You have to check out Florida project. That one is really good too. It is also centered around little girl. I have to see Aftersun. Its in the top of my watch list. But today i have tickets for Suzume:) such beautiful movies they make nowadays
I can highly recommend “the unloved” by samantha Morton. The film is about an abused and neglected girl who is taken to a children's home. Similar to Cait, she lives in her own world and hardly speaks. She seems indifferent and rarely uses facial expressions. Therefore everything is expressed in a subtle way. "The Unloved" is my all-time favorite film because it is personal in a way and reflects reality perfectly and beautifully in a more subtle way.
Less is more. Brilliant. If a close-up of a cookie can make one cry, it must be special. Instant classic!
That scene has made me cry every time I've watched it. It's brilliant!
I went to this and went back the next day. I have now purchased it. Best movie of the last few years.
I completely agree with you.
The ending of This movie made me cry
It gets me every time!
Definitely one of my top 10 favorites.
I agree with you, it is powerful. The argument, brilliant.
It's a movie I never stop thinking about.

@natesfilmreviews Alright, I hope you'll like it. Feel free to tell me what you think when you've watched it.
Two questions: Do you have a letterboxed account? And what are your all-time favorite top 5?
@naw-_- I do have a letterboxd account!
Doing a top 5 is almost impossible haha. I feel like my favorites change on a daily basis!

Thanks for the review. My favorite movie from the last year.
It was so wonderful! Such an amazing movie.
I wanted to see this movie, but unfortunately it never played at my local theater. I will have to check this out on digital.
Definitely do. It's marvelous.
Thank you for such a thoughtful review- I can't wait to watch it.
Thank you for watching! It's a beautiful film that a lot more people need to see!
Saw it. I loved it for all of the reasons that you mentioned. The ending broke me.
Completely agree. The ending destroyed me. Beautiful movie
I just saw it. Incredible! 😢
Deserved a best picture nom in my opinion!
Such a great recommendation. I haven't yet seen it, but I must.
@karinturkington2455 it's a phenomenal movie. I hope you love it!
It's a movie that helps our brains, that clarifies sth in our thoughts.
One of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen.
I 100 percent agree. It gets better with every rewatch.
@@natesfilmreviews Yes, it does. I love all the foreshadowing.
@SimplyCJ that's one of my favorite parts of the film. Also the last shot of the movie is probably one of my favorites in all of cinema. Have you seen Petite Maman from Celine Sciamma?
sublime film , très fin, les acteurs sont formidables !!
It is a wonderful movie! One of my favorites of the decade!
Loved this film. What do you think happens in the end?
I like that it's open ended because unfortunately with the way the world works she probably had to go back to her real parents, but my hopeful side wishes she could go with her new family.
@@natesfilmreviews
I agree with you but I soooo wanted her to ride off into the sunset with her new family.
Don’t usually cry but I wept during that scene…
Thanks for answering! ❤️❤️

Agree. Every time I rewatch it I love it more.
There is no need to talk at 3000 miles an hour. Otherwise, nice review to a great little movie!
Thats just how I talk haha. Thanks for watching!
