    This is so true. I was translating a novel from English to arabic.
    And there was a scene where two enemies were cursing each other. The swearing when translated to arabic was so weak and just hilarious, the readers said they sounds like two innocent children fighting over something simple and not grown men hating each other.

    In Yoruba, a common curse is oloriburuki, which can be translated to “Your head is rotten”

    • @mobolajigbadegesin441
      @mobolajigbadegesin441 2 роки тому +26

    • @sodaa2489
      @sodaa2489 2 роки тому +14

      @@mobolajigbadegesin441 You are correct here.
      I interpreted it literally, as it is often used among A2 speakers. Native speakers will soften it by saying "Unfortunate person" as they would use Alagabagebe to mean "Hypocrite". However, among A2 speakers, we often break the word literally in which case it will mean "Your head is rotten/bad/spoilt."
      With the Alagabagebe example, it will literally mean "One who uses a ladder to climb ridges".
      I hope this made sense, and thanks for sharing this insight with me. I only understood the word from the other meaning.

    Best moment was when Arabs gasped at Koss Omm Illi Nafadak 😂😂😂 I internally cringed! Bro the degree of anger and disdain you gotta have towards someone to say that!
    Fantastic performance in graphic translations and demonstrations!
    But also for educational purposes, I must clarify that the magnitude of meaning in Arabic curse words does not necessarily correlate with the amount of anger and disdain that we mean in saying them. Generally, maximal anger and disdain are delivered with curse words explicitly targeted at one's parents, sisters, and God, not towards one's self. So "damn your entire history" is pretty inconsequential if you're trying to aggravate someone.
