    The stock tire size on my scooter is 120/70 - 12. I installed some bigger tires and they fit... kind of, not really. I'll need to trim the fenders a little bit. It's easier to work on the rear wheel and brake if you drain the gas first and lay the scooter down on its side.

    I use a cheap, junkyard scissor jack under the frame to raise and steady the scooter. Garage sale item for around $2. Between the center stand, the back tire and the jack, it has four contact points to the floor. I have lots of milk crates for other things but they are shaky for this. I can put the jack just ahead of the back wheel under trans case to steady it during rear tire pull.

    I restore old 2012-2014 Tao Tao's and the tires are always petrified. I leave them in the sun for a few minutes to temporarily soften the rubber, then use a large C-clamp or the bench vice to break the bead. Opps! Just noticed your "Stuck tire video".

    Excellent.
    Is there any advantage to using a tubed tire? Perhaps ease of fitting.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 роки тому

      Tubeless tires are much easier to install actually. Dirt bikes use tubes because the rims have a bunch of spoke holes, and tubes don't lose all their air if you bump the sidewall too hard.

      I haven't done that repair yet, but the best way is just to replace the cylinder head. www.partsforscooters.com/151-213-QMB139-Cylinder-Head
      You can buy just a head, but make sure its EXACTLY the same as the one you have (bolt spacing, valve size, etc...)

    You should get a new exhaust and muffler

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  8 місяців тому

      The muffler on this scooter is in excellent condition and is the really strong kind that doesn't fall apart. Aftermarket mufflers don't add power but they make the scooter extremely loud.

    This was Great But that's not what i need to know.. LOL I want to know what is the difference between a 12, 13 and 14 inch scooter tire. I can't find a video of that which is not in Hindu so I thought I'd ask you. LOL

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 роки тому +1

      If you have 12 inch tires on your scooter, you can't install 14 inch tires, because you still have 12 inch wheels. The bigger tires ride smoother on the road, but with scooters, you have to stay pretty close to the stock size. I installed tires slightly bigger than stock on mine, and they were rubbing on the fenders.

    • @DivergentDroid
      @DivergentDroid 3 роки тому

      @@LabCoatPaul I see. I'm looking to buy a scooter you see and notice most come with 12 but I have seen 13 and 14 also. I have read a larger tire help in turns. I'm looking at the TAO TAO150cc VITACCHI - SPARK 150 which has 14 inch tires. Thank you.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 роки тому +1

      @@DivergentDroid That scooter looks nice! Yes, the bigger tires will give you better handling and a smoother ride. You will probably have less storage under the seat.
      Also, it's a Chinese scooter, so the quality will be terrible. You'll have to constantly fix stuff on it.
      It looks like Wal-Mart sells them new for $1,400. I bought a used 2010 Honda Elite 110 for $1200 a couple years ago, and it's 1,000 times better than any Chinese scooter. 2 years from now when that Chinese scooter is hopelessly broken, my Honda will still be good as new.
      You should consider buying a used Honda or Yamaha instead of a Chinese scooter. They really aren't good at all.
      If you enjoy tinkering and aren't concerned with reliability or safety, buy a lightly used Chinese scooter for $500 or less.

    • @DivergentDroid
      @DivergentDroid 3 роки тому

      @@LabCoatPaul That's the problem.. I can't find any in my area for 500. I have seen a lot of videos on Chinese vs Japanese scooters and the majority of people seem to think Chinese scooters are getting better. SYM is actually in Taiwan and I've looked at some of their scooters too. They compete with Kymco in Taiwan who are considered giants in the scooter industry having once been part of Honda. The quality is said to be as good as Honda with prices cheaper but not as cheap as the Tao Tao. I'd love to get a used Honda or Suzuki Bergman 200 but used scooters from the Big 4 are scarce around my city.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 роки тому +1

      @@DivergentDroid You're right about SYM scooters. I had an eTon Sport 50 a couple years ago. It's a SYM scooter, made in China. That scooter had decent quality.
      It had a few problems on the SYM, like the stock airbox was super shitty and let almost no air through, messing up carburetor tuning.
      The transmission also needed a belt, variator, and rollers after only 3,000 miles. (My Honda has no roller wear after 5K miles).
      The list of problems was a few things. Most Chinese scooters it's EVERY thing. None of the screws stripped out on my SYM scooter, compared to ALL of them on a typical Chinese scooter. That's nice.
      Scooter prices are crazy now due to covid. A year ago you could get a non-running scooter for $100, but now people are selling scooters that are completely fucked for $600.
      You'll do well with a SYM or Kymco scooter, but you're in for a lot of work and repairs if you buy a Chinese scooter, even if it's new.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  3 місяці тому

      It's a lot easier with an impact wrench. Try jamming a pry bar through the wheel against the transmission, then using a long breaker bar if you don't have an impact wrench.

    Don't buy a Kymco Grand Vista 250 unless you are a fabricator.
    I did not know at first but the exhaust has a design flaw whereby it is constantly under tension.
    So once it's off for the first tire change it won't fit back in place.
    I had to cross thread the bolts for now and hope it holds until I can afford to use time serts.
    Seething with frustration over such a sh*t design.
    They do design work for BMW so it figures.
