Thanks so much 😊
Love your artistic creativity Kim. What a beautiful platter!
Thank you so much, Tim 🤗
Again Kim another beautiful place that is really gorgeous I like the way you did that with the feathers very nice doing what you’re doing you’re teaching me a lot because this is what I wanna do God bless you
Wow. Awesom. It's fantastic how the shine comes out. Brilliant. Well done Kim. 😊🤗
This one came out really pretty.👍
Thank you 🤗🤗
Beautiful.
Thank you, Pamela!
Awesome awesome awesome!!!!!
This is very beautiful. You did great work.
Thank you!

Thank you, Doug! I don't mind 😁😉 Happy Valentine's day!
That is a stunning piece, Kim.
Thank you!🤗🤗
Fantastic bowl Kim very very beautiful and what a fantastic idea I have a bag of feathers probably about 6 months or more now and still haven't gotten around to doing this lol but after seeing this I must make a start thanks for the kick up the backside lol 👍👍👍
lol you are welcome, Gavin. Happy to help 😆🤗
That’s very nice great job
Thank you, Justin! 🤗
I just tried your frenchies polish, what a fantastic finish. I used it on a white oak bowl not only did the finish have a very high shine but was so smooth it felt soft. Thank you for the recipe
Oh good! I am so happy to hear that!! You are so very welcome! Thank you for watching 🤗
Beautiful plater keep it up !
super tare 😻😻💋💋👍👍👌
well done
Madame, Sie haben wieder einmal eine ausgezeichnete Arbeit geleistet!
Das Video sind prima! Alles Wesentliche ist gut zu sehen und nachvollziehbar. Man lernt davon.
Diese Schale ist wirklich gut geworden, obwohl ich mir den optischen Effekt mit den Federn intensiver vorgestellt hatte.
Aber vielleicht lagen diese einfach etwas zu tief in der Rinne?
Absolutely beautiful design. Wood has amazing grain and colors. Resin looks fantastic ❤️
Thank you, Maddie!
Very nice Kim. I read an article about someone course experience with David Ellsworth recently, and one of the things they learnt from him, was to stand beside what your turning with the tool rest out of the way, and simply bend over at the waist so you can view what your working on as though it's sitting on it's base. This way you can see better the shape your working on how it will look when in the position most people will see it.
Just had an epiphany. The finishing mix your using, is almost French Polishing, I wonder how the finish would look if you went the extra step to use cotton wrapped around sheep wool. I think due to the Lanolin in the wool it would look even shinier and keep it even longer.
Absolutely beautiful platter Kim. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Steve 🤗🤗
Hi Kim, I think it came out beautiful. Absolutely, beautiful. You did a wonderful job. You know, we're only human. If we were perfect we wouldn't be here. Please take care and God bless. Can't wait to see what's next.
Amen to that! Thank you so much, Jeanne! God bless!🤗🤗
Another stunning result Kim......looks great. The work really pays off on the resin when you get that level of shine.
That's Absolutely Beautiful Kim!!! The time you put in really shows👍
Thank you, Steve!
Beautiful platter, I really like the feathers and resin and was impressed with the contrast with the wood.
Kim; bitte den Ring abmachen! Tolle Arbeit!
Happy Sunday Kim. What a beautiful piece!! I'm sure you already know this but
just an FYI in case you do another piece with thin epoxy. If you apply heat with a heat gun to the epoxy it will get rid of your air bubbles so its nice and clear since you're not using a presure pot. You'll want to pour 1/4 inch, hit with the heat gun, wait for a minute or two and hit with the heat gun. Then pour your next 1/4 inch of epoxy and repeat the process with the heat gun. It's a tedious process but well worth the effort. If you have that stubborn bubble that just wont come all the way up, heat the tip of a sewing pin with a lighter and poke the air bubbles.
Even if you may already know this, Hopefully this comment will help anyone else using epoxy resin in this way.
Thank you for yoir videos and actually explaining your process. I just love watching what you come up with.
Yes, Thank you!! Great tips!
Don’t know how you can give that a thumbs down, thank you for sharing that.Good job!!
Thank you very much, Charles!
What a beauty! I even liked the pink feathers! ;-) Have a blessed week, too, TipKim!
Beautiful plate....
Beautiful Work Kim, New subscriber here. Great job.
Thank you!!
Regarding the bubbles...feathers hold moisture. They may FEEL dry...but they hold moisture.
Hey Kim, great video. I have been using mahogany walnut oil instead of b.l.o. and find it to give a better result. Just thought I’d share
That's a very cool idea with the feathers and the results were great! I assume that with Frenchie's just like OB's, you don't add DNA until you're ready to use it?
👍 nice looking platter thanks for posting
Excellent! Looks great. 😁
Wunderschöner Teller, gratuliere.
LOOKS FABULOUS KIM. Thanks for the tip on the Frenchies.
Looks like white oak to me.
Thanks for watching! I think so too!
Really Sharp looking bowl/platter! Nice job. Thanks for sharing! Beach, NC
Thanks for Watching, Bobby!! 🤗🤗
Beautiful. Wonder how that would look with gem stones or crystal beads. ??? Beader here always thinking of new projects. Lol. Love the feather idea. Thank you.
Thank you, Helen 🤗🤗 I am sure that would look awesome!
Great looking bowl. I like the plastic feather ring. Very unique and nicely done. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🤗🤗
It seems you explained in one of your videos a better formula for OB shine juice, is that correct and which video did you explain it in? Formula? Love your work, keep it up. Thanks
I think it is this one. The products and mixing instructions are in the video description. Thank you!
Kim, Another very beautiful platter really liked the idea of using feathers great content & thanks for sharing your knowledge, skills, talents, & video with us.!.!.!. God bless & have a great day
Thank you so much, Jerry 🤗 God bless!
Hi Kim, Nice platter with the feathers looking really nice. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw!!
Beautiful bowl as usual. You mentioned the problem with the age of shellac. Even though it takes a little time to mix thoroughly, I have found using shellac flakes prevents me from buying or keeping old shellac. I just make what I need for several weeks worth of turning and make more when the time comes. It has also allowed me to experiment with the different pound cuts. Making finish is an art. Everyone has their own preferences whether glossy or satin. The journey is always enjoyable. Again, wonderful bowl.
Thank you. Stephen 🤗🤗
Lush looking platter Kim looks bewtufool
Thank you, Steven!
Kim, I have found when "not" using a pressure pot a "light" spritz of denatured alcohol will bring all of the bubbles to the top....
Thanks for the tip!!
Thanks for another fabulous video!!!
Thank you, Chip!
Very unique and totally awesome. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Brown Suspenders! 🤗
Every piece you produce is awesome. I've been watching utube videos for several weeks and want to jump in. Any suggestions on how to get started?
Thank you so much 🤗
Well, I can't tell you what you should do but I can tell you what I did. In short, I watched woodturners on UA-cam for 2 years, bought a small Harbor Freight lathe, quickly upgraded to the 12" HF lathe and the rest is history. 😊 Depends on what you want to turn now and as you get better.
Stunning piece .. and your information is very helpful ..thank you ..
Thank you for watching! I am blessed to know this was helpful!
Very beautiful bol, may God bless more them You bless Him by tour projet To bonjour Kim.
Thank you! God Bless!
Segmenting Kim? You need a wedgie sledge then. Wish I could buy and send it to you. The wedgie sledge makes wedging easier and more exact.
I have a wedgie sled. I just do not like my table saw. 😬 It isn't the best anyway.
I am saving to get my band saw parts to cut segments with it. One day I will venture in the direction 😊
Nice job Kim. James does some awesome lidded boxes using feathers
Oh yes he does!! I have one of his feather lidded boxes on my shelf. I am blessed to have a few pieces of his work! He is an amazing artist.
Wow what a beautiful plater Kim nice going
Thank you, Glen!
Beautiful platter and the rim was exceptional, yes you need to put the effort in on resin but its worth the effort.
Thank you, Buster! 🤗🤗
I love your Channel I've been a subscriber for a long time and I've seen every one of your videos I know it's going to be tough but you have inspired me to start my own channel and wanted to say thank you for being you
Wooohoooo!! I am blessed to hear that!! You will do great. Just like turning, lots to learn but you can do it! Thank you so much 🤗🤗
A lovely bowl upload on valentine's day :)
Thank you!!
looking good kim keep up the good work that what Mack us arts is try new thinks
That is right! I hope I will always push myself outside of that comfort zone. Thank you!!
Very nice,, thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!!
Absolutely beautiful Kim awesome job👍😎👍 happy valentine day to you ♥️♥️🌹🌹♥️♥️
The more decorative duck, guinea fowl, pheasant feathers are all easy to get because all of those birds are farmed.
I appreciate the extra mile you go in editing and explaining the process in your videos.
Yes!! I hope to get some guinea fowl within the year, maybe I will have another project with the feathers when I do 😁 Thank you 🤗🤗🤗
👍🏻👍🏻
GREAT project and video. I especially like that you tell what tools/finishing products you are using! !! !!!
Một nghệ nhân giỏi.A good artisan
Thank you!
Great job, Kim. One wants to say that the plate is as light as a feather!
lol. Thank you!! 😁
Great looking platter Kim
Thank you!
Pretty piece, turned out nice 👊😎🤙🥂
Thank you, CJ!
Looks great like the feathers
Thank you, Thomas!
Kim. I use feathers too. I dip them in sanding sealer first, dry and put them in resin.
FYI out there....mineral oil does absorb through the skin and gives a laxative effect. Unfortunately learned that the hard way. Sorry if that was TMI. Wear gloves if sanding with it.
Careful. You get any better and Robust lathes will pick you up.
I like the finish and the ratios are informative. To be a bit nerdy and analytical about shine-juice proportions: OB Shine Juice (OBSJ) is generally 1/3 each Shellac, Denatured Alcohol (DNA) and Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO). Frenchie's is 60% Shellac, 30% DNA, 10% BLO--so just heavier Shellac, less BLO.
Shellac works more at the surface as it is a waxy/resin that forms a super thin barrier/coat when the DNA evaporates. For this reason shellac is often used in more diluted form as or in sanding sealer. It is very forgiving to apply and maintain but is also alcohol soluble so if the final product is something like a coaster for alcoholic drinks, or furniture that will get heavy exposure to abuse or touching/hand oils, the shellac won't be as durable as something like polyurethane because of the downsides of its positive attributes. But shellac is also easy to refinish if necessary.
BLO is an oil so it penetrates the wood more to bring out the grain. It takes forever to cure when applied on its own and doesn't create much of a seamless "coating" like shellac (or poly, resin, laquer, etc.). Also, BLO is supposedly susceptible to spontaneous combustion as it heats when curing. Hence throwing away BLO-soaked rags is always fun--(I let them dry out on concrete and hope they don't catch fire!).
The DNA in OBSJ/Frenchies is just the medium for the BLO and Shellac to mix so that application goes on smooth allowing the BLO to soak in and the shellac to spread evenly on the surface. Then the finish cures quickly as the DNA evaporates leaving a relatively quick-drying, glossy surface. Since Frenchie's is heavier on shellac, it builds a thicker shell/polishable layer with less BLO compared to OBSJ, but it still dries quickly b/c of the DNA component of the mix is the same. When applying on the lathe, the heavier/thicker portion of shellac will "build" more and provide a thicker/glossier (longer-lasting) finish than OBSJ. I'm sure Frenchie's is named after French Polish which is a super labor intensive application of MANY layers of shellac and very small amounts of oil via a cotton-stuffed wad of cheese-cloth resulting in an incredibly lustrous finish...
Anyway, that and $1 will buy you a pack of gum. :) Nice piece as always!
Very nice platter and thanks for the Frenchie's tip. You mentioned getting into segmented turning and your bandsaw. If you are going to be doing the type where you make dozens of same-sized pieces that you assemble into rings, I would urge you to do it on the table saw instead using a jig. Carl Jacobson has a UA-cam video of this. Your precision will be much higher and frustration much lower.
Jerry Bennett has a UA-cam video on making Carl's sled: ua-cam.com/video/hpFNE1CHsc4/v-deo.html
Awesome job Kim, enjoyed the video! very informative. I'm definitely going to give this a try!
Kim, you just keep getting better & better with your turns!
If I may suggest, I would love to see you turn a walking cane. It could be turned in 2 parts and then joined together. Please consider doing!!!!!
Hi Kim that plate is Ace
Just wanted you to know I did my first resin wood bowl thanks to your inspiration
i've linked your channel to my video so everyone in the UK can see your amazing stuff
Thank you again
Very nice great job Kim and thank you I hope you have a great week and weekend God bless
I think this is a beautiful piece. I am a new Turner and can't wait to try something like this. Thanks so much for the video. I have been following your work for a while and I am impressed with your work and your info is very useful to a newbie like me. Thanks again.
Very nice result. Am hitting Hobby Lobby tomorrow for a few things. Hoping to see stuff that will give me some ideas. Like this project .
Kim, you are a fearless turner. You continually surprise us with your approach and perspective. It’s a beautiful platter. Yes, love James Lee’s work. He’s a great turner and teacher.
Thank you!! James is the best! Amazing artist!
Very beautiful.....
Thank you!
Hi Kim, good project and I like the information insets, maybe you can add the speeds you are using, but great visual instruction. I'm only using negative rake carbide now on any acrylic and the scratches have really about gone away. Cheers …..Craig
Nice work! I have seen where wood was removed from under the pour to allow light thru translucent die which would really pop your feathers. I finish most of my pieces with clear epoxy so sanding to 220 over a colored pour or inlay is all that is needed for a hi gloss finished. I then buff or sand down to get a satin finish if desired. Love your videos. I use a bbq motor to turn the lathe for epoxy finish to cure.
Beautiful bowl.
Thank you, Harry!
Precioso trabajo . Bendiciones
It is beautiful wood. Shellac cans are dated. It can be used about 6 months after the use by date. Store in a cool dry place. If the can shows any rust toss it. Make sure you follow your city or state requirement as to how you should dispose of it. This female Lac Bugs work very hard to make it.
Where do you find the date, I looked on my can and can't find it?
That piece of wood is just beautiful thanks for the new video can't wait until the next one
Beautiful work as always, Kim!
Thank you, David! 🤗🤗
Very beautiful Kim, good job 👍
Kim, you don't know how nice the voice over is and no music basically most of the music they play is not my cup of tea and also awesome platter
Any of the ducks around orange park and Middleburg. Are considered a menace and have a year round season.
Very, very nice‼️😎
Thank you 🤗🤗
Hi my name is Donnie im trying to get something made for a girl in HR at Coca-Cola. .. instead of feathers could you put plastic bottle caps i cant find anyone that can do it thanks
I had better luck on the finish by not using the vein of the feathers.
Yours looks great.
Thank you!!
I like the reference to II Cor 5:17 keep reading to the end of the chapter, the news just gets better.
ii
Beautiful Kim
Thank you, Raymond!
That bowl looks great, and nice to see that some still use their starter kit chisels and not be put aside never to see the light of day again!! Gorgeous bowl👍
Wow.... Nice.....................................
Looks gorgeous.
Thank you so much 🤗
How would Peacock feathers work?
