this is the one song i wish I could hear for the first time again
Me too
You put this into words so beautifully. I was so excited near the end of the song and I didn't want it to end. But then I felt this sadness after is was over and I didn't know why. I think it's absolutely what you said. So I'm going to do the next best thing and listen to it again.
facs... i remember it like it was yesterday. I was skipping through the "Ultimate Indie" playlist and BAMMM... it just gets better and better... and at that time I was a ghost in a haunted house so it won my heart
couldn't have said it better. That transition at the end made me stop everything I was doing, I had no choice but to give it my full attention. I just mentally noted: ''yeah ok, I'm sold''
I just did, and it was exactly as you imagined.
this is so dystopian. the fact that a song about the end of the world is performed in an empty theatre during a global pandemic 🤧
Yes queen 👑 slayy 🙄🙏
Listen to ‘ White Discussion’ by Live. Similar context.
Yeah i guess the end is here
This is the song that will be playing when the janitor finishes stacking the chairs, turns out the lights and locks up at closing time of the universe.
this was the most beautiful comment and i’m crying now :,)
I will think about this comment for the rest of my days.
Why did that make me cry a bit?
God damn that was a beautiful thing to say 😢
Best comment
My sexual orientation is: the scream at the end of this song.
i have never related to a comment this much before
@tyvek05 you must be fun at party's
@@Tinaaa_936 I reported that person for hate speech. We don’t police people’s sexuality or gender around here!
yesss wish the screaming part was longer, could have used a couple more good screams
@tyvek05 Fuck off. Intersex people exist, for one. Nonbinary gender orientations shouldn't be surprising.
someone give the camera man a raise
Yes. (from the description)

@@alex0589 oh I thought they used rails for this
@tyvek05 So is Phoebe. A lot of work goes into blocking and shooting something like this and they did it well, what wrong with a bit of positivity?
@tyvek05 That is a stupid and ignorant comment. If someone does there job to high standard why should they not get any praise or recognition for it. Everyone involved in this has done a fantastic job and they deserve praise for creating something so beutifull
@tyvek05 it’s a shame people like you pollute our planet.
That blue Phoebe against the gold theatre is so striking. To be honest the colours in this video are just insane.
i know right? the very first time i watched this version i had my attention on that, and then she turn golden too.
@@Queeentrasputo It's not often you get the synergy of camera work and colour. Just love it.
The whole thing is stunning: the colors, the lighting, the camera work, the way it moves through the theater. It's really perfect.
@@montysano yup passing by the pillars in time with the music, this is so sick and well done
The longest microphone cord I’ve ever seen
It actually has a wireless system strapped to her ass, she posted about it on instagram lmao
@@monke5052 LMFAO
Hahaha that was my first though as she rose from the elevator floor. Then I found my self struggling to believe this wasn’t lip-synced.
@@monke5052 “to her ass” 😭😭😭
cried some real tears watching her sing so earnestly to the empty seats
Her voice
This will be the song that plays whenever a movie flashes back to 2020.
2020 is the movie.
one of the best quarantine performances ive seen
It’s so funny that “quarantine performance” is now a category. You’re absolutely right though.
Sound similar to Taylor swift new album. Phoebe bridges deserve her Grammy nominations
@@fopeabah8962 yes, but this song came out before Taylor’s. Therefore folklore sounds like punisher
MGK takes that challenge and offered a big raise to the ante.
@@fopeabah8962 Taylor has been a fan of Phoebe for a while. When Folklore came out a number of songs on the album were credited for their Phoebe Bridgers influence. This was not Phoebe's first album.
The fact she posted a song about the end of the world on election night
Lmao...like it will be the end of the world. Nothing will change no matter who wins.
The fact that there are more than 100 countries in the world except USA. Yeah, truly "the end" of the world, not just election night.
Every end is a new beginning.
This song actually came out four months ago.
@@themadelinegrey yeah I know I’m a huge phoebe fan! I was talking about the performance
Witchy, macabre Phoebe is the only reason to keep existing.
honestly same tho
Way to set the bar low
I need “man I hate this part of Texas” on a t shirt
Same. Also. This aged well.
@@geenatron honestly
I live in Texas and I’d wear the shit out of that shirt!
Pretending you’re above a place instead of making it better is so lame
@@kevinjohnston4923 you’re missing so much context haha. She put that line in the song because her gig manager would say it no matter where they arrived.
phoebe has the most GORGEOUS VOICE i swear to god
Agreed. A gorgeous instrument in its own right.
And then...that SCREAM
she started singing to an empty theater and i started crying. god i miss my job.
Me too. Stay strong friend.
This is a big same
We'll beat it one day.
Going to a show tonight in Sydney, AUS, and Hamilton on Wednesday. Theatre is coming back: stay strong.
@@seanomatopoeia I'm so happy for you bro ♥️ the end is in sight
It’s so eerie how there’s no one in the audience
it's like she's a ghost haunting the theater

God this performance is so beautiful. The lighting, the way it’s shot, the vocals EVERYTHING
yes phoebe, this is the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina endorsement Netflix needed
Sabrina do not deserve Phoebe :D
And Netflix does not deserve Phoebe :D
I'm weirdly obsessed with the line after being on a swingset being "i keep pushing you away from me / but you come back with gravity" -- it's so literally about swings while being so easily applicable to a relationship
This is honestly just as good if not better than the music video for me. It fits the lyrics and their parallel to covid and everything much better.
I really liked how she connected to the audience
The best songwriter in the world right now. Just beware, when her and Taylor do a duet the world will implode a few minutes after it is released.
for real!
been waiting for them to collab since so long
it was just released today that they are doing a duet on taylor’s re-recording of red!
@@sav9871 AND I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING ABOUT IT ON TWITTER SINCE THREE HOURS BESTIE WE WON
Well the world will implode on november 19th then…
...so as it turns out, you *can* have feelings for strangers
Yes. And they aren't always positive.
woah thats what the song punisher is about
This makes a great alternative music video. If there's one good thing that quarantine has brought, it's this.
i have watched this an unhealthy amount of times
this for a live performance for a late night show is ground breakingly brilliant. I loved it.
The scream was so good! That must be really difficult to do live.
"Well... you just scream" - Oberst, probably
Maybe. Depends on the person, honestly.
What she does, to me, is kinda this "falsetto" scream. Like, take a growl, but push it allllll the way up into your head. Think of screamo and post punk bands doing the cry/scream-talk thing.
I found it by accident myself. I saw a raccoon and started doing growls at it. I was just belting out "Raccoooooooooooooooon" over and over. And then I decided to take the oooos as far towards the back of my mouth and towards my braincase, above the dangly thing I cant spell. It sounded a lot like what she did here, and Ive been doing it since with no pain.
Its a SUPER low resistance scream. In fact, you can feel that if you were to put any tension on it, you might swallow a rock.
I think shes doing something similar. My experience at least lets me think you can do what she did, keep performance poise, and not injure yourself. The question is if you can find the right muscles to move, or if your vocal system has the right geometry.
listening to this somewhere in Germany right now
but can you place it? lol. have a good day
I hate this part of Texas.
Listening to this somewhere
This song has somehow captured my spirit. I am 59 years old. The last song that had the same effect was ‘ Inside Job’ by Pearl Jam. I love new music and it’s originality.
That scream at the end and cut out has big twin peaks 2017 ending vibes
This was the single best performance encapsulating the experience of this pandemic, the government, and our own personal feelings in this trying time. And the fact that this dropped on election night? Wow, I could right an essay about the implications. Her performing to an empty theater while hundred of political gatherings occurred with or without masks, while everyone else was glued to the TV or their phones while uncertainty loomed. I could go on and on. Stunning.
I think it aired on the night of the first debate, but yes, everything you said applies here! It was the right song for the moment.
My god, this smile when she gets to the empty stage. It's hauntingly beautiful!
It's a gorgeous song and a wonderful performance. Add in the camera work (a single, unbroken shot!), the lighting, the direction. This one has it all.
Somewhere in Germany but I can't place it
Man, I hate this part of Texas
Close my eyes, fantasize
Three clicks and I'm home
When I get back I'll lay around
And I'll get up and lay back down
Romanticize the quiet life
There's no place like my room
But you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore
Not even the burnouts are out here anymore
And you had to go
I know, I know, I know
Out in the park we watch the sunset
Talking on a rusty swing set
After a while you went quiet and I got mean
Always pushing you away from me
But you come back with gravity
And when I call you come home
A bird in your teeth
So I gotta go
I know, I know, I know
When the sirens sound you'll hide under the floor
But I'm not gonna go down with my hometown in a tornado
I'm gonna chase it
I know, I know, I know
I gotta go now
I know, I know, I know
Driving out into the sun
Let the ultraviolet cover me up
Went looking for a creation myth
Ended up with a pair of cracked lips
Windows down, scream along
To some America first rap country song
A slaughterhouse, an outlet mall
Slot machines, fear of God
Windows down, heater on
Big bolts of lightning hanging low
Over the coast, everyone's convinced
It's a government drone or alien spaceship
Either way, we're not alone
I'll find a new place to be from
A haunted house with a picket fence
To float around and ghost my friends
No, I'm not afraid to disappear
The billboard said the end is near
I turned around, there was nothing there
Yeah, I guess the end is here
I missed the longer ending, it's so emotional, I feel like I forgot how to feel excited about life for quite a while, this song gave me that feeling back
I just keep coming back to this, everything about it just strikes a chord. Phoebe’s talent shining so bright it’s glaring, the videography, the outfit and the whole look, the song and it’s lyrics being just perfectly represented in the empty theatre. I think we will look back in however many years and this will be a defining performance of excellence from Phoebe, this will be forever the video I show someone when they say ‘I don’t know her’
i can’t get over it either.
This is art, and it takes you on an inner journey.
My god. I don't know how sounds can make me feel such strong emotions. This was one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing. I love her so much
her singing about “when the sirens sound” while i hear sirens outside as people riot
i feel like I’m going to hear 2:08 when I die, this song makes me so gut-wrenchingly sick to my stomach in the most beautiful way
I feel like I'm always going to remember the first time I saw this. It felt like sitting in a room and having a discussion with my own lingering melancholy. It's the same feeling I got watching "Inside" for the first time.
I love how her sweet and pure voice fits so well with the darkness of her songs
I cannot stop humming/singing/thinking about this song, and repeatedly watching this performance. Gotta love a song that starts w the feeling of lying in bed on a gray rainy day, and ends w the feeling of driving into a sun-kissed infinite horizon. Stunning
At some point, I’ll make it through her performance without crying.
phoebe spinning and singing is a mood
Perfect soundtrack for this time. Either way, the end is here.
Watching this again in 2024, this shit just looks utterly wild 🤯
This album has been on repeat for three days now. Ever since the SNL performance I've been hooked!
Her words "when the siren sounds, you're gonna hide under the floor" hit so badly.
The lighting changes so powerfully affect the overall mood and makeup so well - worth a watch for the lighting alone! Plus the amazing song!!
performing to no one is so 2020... Keep it up, all the amazing people that contributed and of course Pheobe. You are an inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere.
Did they take this down and repost it for some reason? Anyhow, that smirk that she gives at the first "the end is here" kills me. I love our beautiful terrifying queen.
was wondering the same
I think the original was on Seth Meyers’ channel, with his commentary. This is only the performance.
@@braedenneale845 Yeah, that's what happened. Confused me at first too.
The other upload on seths channel cut off and had commentary at the end I think
@@MrThecat1000 they definitely had a leadin that was fairly good, and a stinger at the end that wasn’t in the same tone of voice. I’m just curious if PB reclaimed the rights, or what actually happened. I’m still happy to see it, and maybe more without any context other than the performance itself.
Anyone else discover this song on SNL and been binging phoebe ever since ? What has my life been before this lol
Definitely the best version of the song, love the cinematography and the whole sing alone complex vibe.
Phoebe, you're a fucking gem! You're scream at the end KILLS ME!
Beautiful video while also being probably the most "2020" video I've watched. I knew that scream was coming, and it still punched me in the gut.
the feeling when it starts getting faster
The end is near, my friends. Prepare yourselves for good or ill.
Every time. Shivers over this version. Thank you.
This song gets better each time I listen to it. So good and so on point.
This may be my favorite performance on a late night show ever
