      @Brendan.sherman 5 років тому +341

@@muralmarshall5044 A combination of "burying the hatchet" e.g. making amends and "coming up roses" e.g. going well. Basically she tried to make up with/forgive somebody, but it didn't work out. I'm not 100% sure about the significance of lavender, but roses are typically known to symbolize love and affection, so changing the phrase fits the theme of the song.

Could also mean he's anonymous in that he's 1- left unidentified in the lyrics and/or 2- not a high-profile person (I believe the song is about a guy in her band). This song reminds me of Paro and Devdas' love story. "I went with you up to the place you grew up in" is probably referring to her visiting his childhood traumas with him. She did have a saviour complex and probably felt that she could save him but she also had self-respect and knew when and how to exert boundaries when he disrespected her. That's why I love her so much. Paro was a kind woman and she loved him but she loved and respected herself too. Except when at the end, she finds out that this is the last time she would get to see him and we see her at the weakest, most vulnerable. The way she yells "Devaaa" so chilling. Oh the thought of what could be is always so saddening. Wish he could have a moment of redemption but Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay is relentless in not giving him even a moment of respite in his downfall. Devdas' hamartia is his indecisiveness, his need to always escape.

I have listened to this song a million times simply from binging this album. But tonight it brought me to my knees in tears. Her music is so incredibly touching and heart wrenching. I appreciate this moment that I've had to experience it in such a different way than before.

If you want to see where the visual inspiration for this is from, watch "Carnival of Souls" 1962. It's an indie horror movie filmed in the outskirts of Salt Lake City, UT.

Such a poetic capture of youthful angst suddenly, maybe not so, maturing into the leaving it all behind and the cold heart we still live with deserting that other time where being out of place was our shared place. This song is the haunting regrets that discomfort might have gotten the best of us, but maybe not.

I went with you up to
The place you grew up in
We spent a week in the cold
    Just long enough to
    "Walden" it with you
Any longer, it would have got old
Singing "Ace of Spades" when Lemmy died
But nothing's changed, L.A.'s all right
Sleeping in my bed again, and getting in my head
And then walk around the reservoir
You, you must have been looking for me
    Sending smoke signals
    Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
    One of your eyes is
    Always half-shut
Something happened when you were a kid
    I didn't know you then
    And I'll never understand
Why it feels like I did
"How Soon Is Now" in an '80s sedan
You slept inside of it because your dad
Lived in a campground in the back of a van
You said that song will creep you out until you're dead
And you must have been looking for me
    Sending smoke signals
    Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
    I want to live at
    The Holiday Inn
Where somebody else makes the bed
    We'll watch TV while
    The lights on the street
Put all the stars to death
It's been on my mind since Bowie died
Just checking out to hide from life
And all of our problems, I'm gonna solve 'em
With you riding shot-gun, speeding, 'cause fuck the cops
And you, you must have been looking for me
    Sending smoke signals
    Pelicans circling
Burning trash out on the beach
    I buried a hatchet
    It's coming up lavender
    The future's unwritten
    The past is a corridor
I'm at the exit looking back through the hall
    You are anonymous
    I am a concrete wall

This music video is a direct homage to "Carnival of Souls", a 1962 low budget horror film that now has a cult status. The scene they're emulating is where the protagonist visits an abandoned amusement building called "The Saltair Palace" right outside of Salt Lake City, UT.
