Jesus knows what's up
hi king
Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time...
you hear Chinese Satellite Mr. Christ?
i just love how she’s smiling sweetly through the entire performance before she starts screaming
Me watching the guitar knowing it’s fate the entire time: 👁👄👁
You could say that ...you knew the end...
@@zackapusto5586 omg that’s gold 😂
@@zackapusto5586 i liked your comment. now get out 😤
It probably survived, haha. Tough one.
The way your profile pic perfectly illustrates your comment is sending me
I wish I could listen to this song for the first time again
I am right now
I guess the end is here :)
same, the first time I heard it was in my car and it was raining so hard. it was an amazing experience
If u go out of your way to not listen to a song for months and listen to it again you can get the same feeling
I am, I shall give you the experience
I still find the fact that there were people genuinely angry about the guitar smash fucking hilarious.
y skelton woman smash gitar GRRR 😡
they weren't mad that it was a guitar they were mad that a girl did it simple as that.
@@luxbledstone Facts. Cobain did it on this show (although they did kind of cut him off)
@@simonwilliams8528
1) Why do we give "Cobain or other musicians" the benefit of the doubt that it was "genuine"?? Smashing a guitar is a well-tread rock star gimmick, and to believe that a musician is just spontaneously inspired to do this is probably a stretch. So the question of authenticity I think has more to do with our own beliefs in what an "authentic" rock star seems like than it does that musician's inner thought process. This is why gender comes into the picture for someone like Phoebe Bridgers who is constantly poking fun at the centrality of maleness in rock music.
2) For anyone familiar with Phoebe Bridgers, "ironic" and "silly" and "contrived" gestures are all central to her persona as an artist, and to some extent, even her songwriting. She is plays with rock music archetypes and cliches, to the point of being in an all-women band called "Boygenius" and creating merch full of heavy metal imagery. Which is why a lot of fans are rolling their eyes at people being sincerely upset about this stunt -- it sort of underscored the implied joke, that certain musicians and music fans have no sense of humor or absurdity when it came to their traditional musical heroes, and the fact that a woman was performing this ritual just made its absurdity apparent for the first time.
@@simonwilliams8528 I mean, I'm not assuming anything particular about you personally, and when I refer to people "sincerely upset", I am thinking more of boomer Eric Clapton fans than someone on UA-cam.
I disagree strongly with the idea that "maleness isn't central to music at all" -- with the correction that I am talking about rock music in particular, which is where this guitar-smashing archetypes is drawing from. You're right that women are "currently" at the fore of a lot of music across all genres, but a simple Wikipedia search of the best selling acts of all time are stacked with male rock acts and female artists who are more generally thought of as pop stars (Madonna, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, versus The Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Eagles, Rolling Stones, etc.).
Phoebe to her guitar: “The end is near”
i'm sorry but this outfit fucking KILLED me in the best way possible, only topped by the absolute banger open mic vibes to this
Absolutely! I've been so enamored by the embellished skeletons in her different dresses ❤️
She basically hijacked twenty one pilots style but made it 10x better
The Who wore skeleton suits in 1969-70. Between the suits and the guitar smashing, I’m guessing it was a nod. And I absolutely loved every second of it.
I would like to like this but its currently 2222 and I dont want to be the ass who destroyes that beauty
Can’t believe she screamed for a minute and didn’t get a Grammy smh
She doesn't need some institution to validate her talent, she has us.
Bestie the Grammys are a scam. As long as you get NOMINATED that's good enough
happy megan won though
THIS ONE
@@Cupofgo this.
This song is probably so much better when you listen to the entire album before it. So powerful.
Especially because the album opener, DVD Menu, is a short instrumental that echoes this song. So from the very beginning you “know the end”. So good.
Definitely! This was definitely my favorite song on the album, but I think it was largely thanks to the build-up.
It just works so well as a closer
🦁 🐯 roar
I wish I could relisten to this album for the first time again. I thankfully only heard Kyoto before I listened all the way through in order, the sheer bittersweet release of the end of this song had me sobbing after all of the somber restraint before it.
The scream at the end is so liberating
i smile SO big every time
people were so upset that this song wasn't *angry* enough to warrant a guitar smash, not realizing that it's not supposed to be *angry* but *cathartic*
I love screaming along with her when I listen to the song. It is so stress revealing
I also find it empowering, brave and full of wonderment.
I love the whole thing, her smile throughout, the shred, the scream, and yes, the preplanned smash. The end is here, why the fuck not? Smile into oblivion.
for anyone still mad about this: the guitar was 85 bucks, the crew knew she was doing it beforehand so they gave her a fake monitor to drive the guitar into, and guitar company was in full support of her smashing it as well
edit: please stop fucking replying to this
I believe it was also auctioned off for thousands of dollars with the proceeds going to GLAAD.
Men smashing guitar : cool!
Women smashing guitar : I think we have problem here.
Duh.
haha I don't get why people were mad anyways. the guitar couldn't feel anything
@@Daniel-ed9gn it sold at an auction at GLAAD for 101K.
A fake monitor 🤦♂️
The whole time I was watching this I was wondering if she would actually do the scream… I was not disappointed.
it's like the "woo" in Kyoto, she's never not gonna do it

THANK YOU
For truth
I live in a house where expressing anger is seen as inappropriate. I’m always being watched, always monitored, always judged. Every lyric, I relate to. I like to listen to this song and imagine the screams at the end are my own, out of frustration. It’s very cathartic. Thank you for your song.
How did you survive to this? I'm living the same and it feels like dying inside
@@veronicagiannetti266 same here 😔
can relate to this so much, even expressing your feelings and emotions, sharing your thoughts and dreams, it's all seem as a weakness or a waste of time :(
You could look at it another way- at least you live in a house 🤔
Rebel against the system, create anarchy in your society
I watched this thinking “maybe this isn’t the best song to do live” because (tho I absolutely LOVE it) it’s weird (it’s long, the scream, the breathing at the end) but then she started SHREDDING it on the guitar, did the scream and wrecked the guitar. I fucking loved it 😂
@Will Morgan I think it's the part where she is playing two beginner level power chords whilst strumming.
@@Gunn27 it’s in an open tuning, something she utilizes often and very well. also, music doesn’t have to be complex to be good, and even if she’s “just strumming”, she’s delivering an emotive performance backed by a full and competent band with classy instrumentation that fits her vision of what her music should be
*edit : spelling mistake LOL
@@That_DogDay sure, but it really can’t be described as “shredding”
@@relevo86 definitely not, i think the original comment meant shredding as in going hard and rocking out. You don’t have to shred to have a good and jamming time \m/
Just wanted to keep this script going 6 months later~so I'll say SHREDDING !!
Harrison's guitar solo is the unsung hero of this performance... on top of Phoebe headbutting him on the set

I refuse to believe that SNL having phoebe bridgers on the same show as dan levy isn't VERY deliberate-- they knew exactly the audience they were aiming for
The gay agenda is real and we LOVE to see it😁😁
@@thefreehealer792 oo
i was JUST thinking this
Are they both gay?
It’s almost as if they plan out the show ahead of time 😲
this song makes me cry. it feels like you choose the bad ending in a story mode game
ms. bridgers offers a magnificent point: people blow up cars for action movies all the time and nobody gives a damn
phoebe you may not have been able to break the guitar but we still love you
IM DEAD THIS COMMENT
Phoebe defeatedly hugging Emily at the end is the most wholesome part of the set. We're still proud of you Phoebs!
I think it would've worked if it wasn't a fake monitor.
@@idontevenhaveapla7224 Kurt Cobain would have been so proud. It is well known that 10% of Nirvana's touring budget went on building and installing fake monitors for him to smash with a guitar in a pre planned meticulous way, overseen by Fender and his record company. Nothing says "passion" like fully rehearsed displays of anger for the camera.
Please note I am being imomic.

This has got to be the best SNL performance in the decade
One of the best performances, Saint Vincent also did an incredible job!
I'd vote for Jack White in October 2020. Replaced Morgan Wallen on relatively short notice, no new material to promote, and tore it up. This Phoebe Bridgers performance is outstanding.
Nah, BTS was way better.

just knowing that Daniel Levy was somewhere in that room watching in person makes this 1000x better
It really does make it so much braver, encapsulating and wondrous #sobrave
I love how she got more and more confident with her vocals as it went on, a perfect performance.
I feel like the audience had no fucking idea what brilliance was in front of them. Phoebe just knows how to be in it once the first note comes out of her mouth. And her band. Come THRU VIOLIN. Come thru all of them shit
lol wut
I love how u can see in her face how excited she is for the end of the song to come
Wow, I love her ribcage jewelry thing. Whatever you’d call it. It’s pretty awesome.
that one dislike is from the guitar
there's 2 now and the other is from the missing verse

I love watching Phoebe’s facial expressions while she sings. For me, that’s the best part about watching her perform live. She’s amazing!

The guitar destruction was perfect, I gasped. The sheer rawness of the screaming near the end of the song really meshes well with smashing the guitar on stage. It looks like she had a lot of fun doing it too lol.
I guess if it's the first time you've ever seen that

It was a pretty weak smash honestly. She didn't even put her back into it
my favorite song of 2020
Best song, from best album, by best performer! I'm 74 and she's been blowing me away since "Stranger in the Alps" came out! Fuck the Grammies!
When I saw this live for the first time I instantly thought of Kurt Cobain, and I just thought how fucking epic it was.
I had never heard of this artist till then and I was instantly intrigued.
It's refreshing to see the operatic songwriting and arrangements coming back into mainstream youth music. Where a song arrangement goes off the rails at times but in a good way.
Reminds me of Court of The crimson King..and many other British bands that did this..
an eclectic tapestry of instrumentation.. well done 👏.
You have yet another new fan.
Kurt? Lol
in the future, this performance will be iconic in pop culture
it already is
🤣🤣🤣🤣😄
Haha no
Probably not but it was okay
What performance in what pop culture?
This is still calculated as five of the best minutes of my life and I’m so lucky to get to watch it over and over.
I’ve never seen someone look so cute while smashing a guitar
Can you point me to the bit in the video where the guitar smashed?
I CAN FINALLY BINGE WATCH THEM AGAIN YASSS
so we just not gonna talk about how flawlessly perfect that outfit is?
People are mad about her smashing a guitar? But men like Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain did this shit all the time and you loved it. Could it possibly just be the misogyny? I think it’s the misogyny.
🤣
@@noahdaugherty8413 dude, seriously? The only way you could ask the question “what world do you live in that you think men hate women so much” is if your head is in the sand and you refuse to acknowledge the many statistics, historical and current, that make it clear misogyny is a thing. I live in THIS world, dude. This one. But I’m not gonna bother explaining further bc I don’t feel like hearing one more dude invalidate those things or tell me “but men have problems too”. But just know that your comment is hilarious when there are places around the world where things aren’t as beautifully “equal” as you might have personally seen from your own myopic perspective.

YES YES YES I'M SO HAPPY THIS IS BACK... everything about this from her outfit to the guitar smash is just *perfection*
lol the violinist must be thinking
"hell nah I ain't smashing mine"
This song holds such a unique place in my heart. I’ve had to grapple with accepting that I have trauma. I used to go on drives to think and get away from my family, and on one of those drives this song came on as I turned around to go back home. I broke down sobbing and screamed along with her in the anxiety and frustration of going back home to the ones who gave me that trauma. It was therapeutic in a way. Thank you Phoebe.
still the most beautiful song to listen to all the way through
Finally!!! I prayed for this performance to be back on UA-cam, and our skeleton goddess finally answered that prayer 😩
I love how she angrily smashes the guitar and then proceeds to hug the back vocalist its adorable
My god her writing cuts so deep.

I loved this so much!
That symbolism at the end where Mrs Phoebe on her knees adorned in the gilded age attire rocking out! Head banging like a champ! back and forth servicing her fellow lead guitarist letting him take the spotlight. It was savage
The only reason to be mad about someone smashing a guitar is if they don't do it properly but honestly she really went for it. 11/10 will watch again
The only reason to be mad about someone smashing a guitar is if it's unearned. There is no way to smash a guitar improperly if it is earned and genuine.
