  • A simple adjustment can get this problem solved if none of your wiring is damaged.

Hi Ray, I just wanted to thank you for this great video. I have the same car as you but with the smaller engine and my alarm started to go off randomly. Every time I went to the car, I saw that the boot light was on for some strange reason. I watched loads of videos but your video diagnosed my problem. These washer tabs on the boot/trunk lid were telling my car that the boot was opened even after I locked and alarmed the car and this was the cause of my alarm going off randomly. I was then driving and suddenly the boot light began to go on and off on my dash and so your video sprang to mind. I've tightened the washer after watching your video as they become lose over time and few people will know of this problem and how it trips the alarm and looks like an electrical issue. Everybody thought it was the sensors or the electric loom through the trunk/boor lid but I believe that you have identified a major issue for many people that often goes undiagnosed to great expense and frustration to the owners. Thank you for your video. You have saved me and many other people a lot of time and money with this fix. Time will tell but not enough of us owners understand that these washers can trip the car alarm when they become loose and give false trunk/ boot open warnings on our car dashboards..🙏🏾🙌🏾👍🏾

Brilliant. Will keep this in mind when I get round to looking at the boot wiring loom on my 2001 E46 M3. Got an intermittent boot open light popping up on the dash just like you had. My guess is the wiring, but would be worth looking at those adjusters first. Thanks!

One other thing you could look at is the striker plate that the boot hits while closing and locking shut. It is adjustable, mine has 2 Torx screws #25. Over time and constant closing can push the latch down slightly. Good luck.

Good point. I did notice that occasionally my boot wouldn't lock when closing the lid. All I had to do to sort that was re-open it, push the button on the latch handle which hit the microswitch to reset it and then close again. That happened intermittently up until a year ago but then it just stopped doing it. Makes sense that if the striker plate is off alignment then the microswitch may not detect that the boot is actually locked as all it takes is a mm or 2 to stop the catch from fully wrapping itself around the locking bar. That said, as my car is 17 years old, the wires inside the boot wiring loom will have likely rubbed through most of its' insulation so I've ordered a schmeidmann splicing harness at less than half the cost of a dealer replacement. Easy fix, just need to cut off the old harness, splice in the wires at each end, stick some fabric tapie on for extra protection and tuck it back through. One other thing that may just be coincidental - I fitted new LED licence plate lights a few months back. I wonder if I swapped them back for OEM type halogen ones the dash light would go out? As far as I knew, the bulbs on the left/right licence aren't monitored by the canbus system but I may be wrong..

Hi Ray, once you solved the trunk light did the electrics come back on for the convertible top?

I know this is an old question you asked mate, but I'm sure the roof would have worked as the process involves making sure that the boot remains closed during the open/close procedure. With the error light out, the convertible top module would see it as error free and therefore carry on with its' job.
