    Why was a 14 mm used to take off the drain plug, but a 15 mm used to torque it down?

  • @russlavalle
    @russlavalle Рік тому +4

    Tightening the drain plug "nice and tight", then checking it afterwards by looking for the click doesn't do much if the initial torqueing was too tight. An immediate click just means it's at least what the torque wrench setting is. Make sure that it clicks while turning the plug... once. So you may need to loosen it a bit, then retighten, looking for the click.

    Good video.
    You may be able to get the drain plug off the oil filter cap by simply using the oil filter cap wrench to deliberately over tighten the cap and then try taking off the drainplug again with the ⅜ inch extension. Don't tighten it more than you need to.
    Usually this problem occurs when the ⅜ inch extension is used to install both the drainplug and oil filter cap together in one step.

      Make sure you get a good socket for that oil housing or it can strip and break in half

    You did an awesome job, as always for 1A Auto; torque specs are the most important and most missed

    The metal plug on mine is also stuck to the housing cause whoever did the last oil change tightened it too much . How do I take it off the housing for my next oil change so I can change the smaller o ring ?

    There’s two o-rings there, what did you do with the smaller o-ring?

    When you had the oil filter cap off you should have loosened the oil filter drain plug so that next time you'll be able to remove the oil filter drain plug first and drain the filter oil with the adapter. Less messy that way.

    So, there’s an o-ring replacement that comes with the filter under that that piece you weren’t able to take off. How important is it that I replace that. What could possibly undo it. It’s on top tight!

  • @clay1883
    @clay1883 6 місяців тому

    So, did you just use a wrench and tighten the drain plug and "Double check" with a torque wrench? If so, how do you know it wasn't tighter, maybe much tighter than 30 ft'lb? Why bother with a torque wrench at all if doing it that way?

    I changed the oil in our 2009 RAV4 today and it was full on the dipstick with only 4.45 quarts of oil added. Yet the owner's manual says capacity is 4.7 quarts! Any thoughts on that? My car was 100% level when I checked it. I even used a level to make sure.

      @ianparkhill3746 4 роки тому +2

      Did you run the engine before checking the oil after you put it in? Usually I've got to run it for a minute or so, I believe so the new oil can circulate back into the filter. Then you'll get an accurate reading

      Obviously not all the old oil drained out but as long as you’re reading between the low and full mark (in the middle) of the oil dip stick you’re ok. Don’t over fill tho’

    • @Mr9Inchez3
      @Mr9Inchez3 3 роки тому

      It’s always like that. You’ll never get all the oil out. True it helps to have a warm pan but even then it’s very rare I put in the full amount. Always start at least a quarter quart low.

    So you should use a new washer in the sump plug, but you didn't bother. Glad it wasn't my car. 🤣
