Thanks for the helpful step by step. To address some of the other comments, my 2007 Rav TAKES 6.4 quarts of oil. The oil pan drain plug needs a 14 mm socket. The Toyota dealership mechanics overtightened the oil port cover when they changed the oil last time, so I had the same problem as quikgt. I solved it by tightening the cartridge assembly a bit and then trying to remove the port cover. When reassembling, torque the cartridge assembly to 20 foot pounds, then torque the cover to 10 foot pounds. The next time I change the oil, I won't have that problem again. Good luck!
Here’s what I use: - Mobil 5W-30 full synthetic - Mobil 1 M1C-251 - PT W54076 Toyota oil filter wrench (I just got mine at Canadian Tire) - 14 mm socket for oil drain
I like the inclusion of the short hose attached to the drain piece for the oil filter. This is the only video I've seen that demonstrates how this indeed does eliminate the mess. There was one other video that used a beverage bottle instead of a hose that was also very effective. •No new crush washer (or o-ring as you called it)? •No helpful torque specs? •Used a pick to remove o-ring (Toyota says not to)? •Start up the engine and check for leaks?
@@mannarmylie4195 I will stick to the same position I had 3 years ago when I posted this comment. The 5 year factory warranty on my humble Corolla engine expired in 2010. For the last 11 years I have been doing once a year oil changes with Amsoil Signature Series and their long life EA oil filters. The engine still runs perfectly and I have saved substantial amounts of money and valuable time by using the best oil on the market. As a bonus, my waste oil production is a fraction of what it would have been with second rate oil. Toyota and Amsoil, a match made in automotive heaven.
Just got finished changing the oil and filter. Unfortunately Toyota dealership service pros over tightened the filter drain plug and I ended up unscrewing the whole assembly. I could not put the top small O-ring on because of that. I replaced the large O-ring and the new filter on and twisted the filter canister with new filter back into place.
This is how I been changing oil on my rav4 v6 the last 7 years as well. No special filter wrench is need and much more convenient. I never bother to mess with the filter drain plug and the small o ring.
Our Toyota dealer also tightens oil filters and oil filter housings to insane levels. Maybe it’s to keep DIYers from doing it? Self contained oil filters only need to be hand tight. I also don’t bother with the drain plug on these filter assembly designs.
Good morning, thank you for your video.I'd like to know what is the wrench you use for remove the first oil cap(the nut seems female square..).I tryied to use exagonal wrench, but the 10mm is too big,the 8mm is to little...
What size is the drain plug? What is the tool you used to remove the filter housing? What torque for installing the drain plug? What size of rubber drain hoes? How many litres/quarts of oil for re-fill? Having to ask these results in 'thumbs down'.
Sizes of the tools used would help...also, I think Toyota recommends 0W-20 oil...I got Mobil 1 0W-20 Synthetic and original Toyota filter as well, not the cheap garbage oil change business use...this vehicle is great and deserves good parts, not junk...it will be happy humming many more miles.....but thanks anyway.
Actually, although I agree with you, the earlier models may have allowed for 5W-30 conventional and New York City taxicabs years ago use to get 500,000 miles out of their engines on conventional oil. I would expect that they used 3,000 mile change intervals though.
Yeah not the best design if I'm honest but if you have the tool it makes it so easy. So I can kinda see what they were going for but, I do much prefer the standard oil filter design. Thank you for watching!
Around 4+ should do it. ,4 is safe. Enough oil to supply the engine. Safe for almost any car is 4 qts. Even a Mercedes. And Honda's? One Quart left. Burn it.
I've never changed an oil filter with a reusable housing before so this video really helped me understand what needs to be done

If the over tighten anything they can't be called mechanics. They are simply untrained lube techs.

Tyvm!! All this should have been covered in the video. It's nice to know what you need before you crawl under. 👍
14MM, thanks.

I finally found a great video showing the changing of an oil filter on a V6 RAV4 2006-2012.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
That is the first time I've seen a filter like that. Thanks for the video.
+Sophal Teav thanks I'm lad you liked it, please subscribe to our channel
We just bought a 2011 RAV4 V6
Thank you for sharing
Very nice!
PT W54076 Toyota Oil filter wrench 64mm 14 flute cut outs, Auto Zone
MyBlackBenz, thank you for that recommendation. I just bought one of those yesterday…doing an oil change on my Venza today. 😊👍🏼
Good video but you missed a step. It’s recommended the you pre-fill the oils filter assembly before re-installing the assembly back on the car
You dont prefill cannister style oil filters. You cant without making a mess
@ I was under the impression that if the canister attached like a normal filter, it was recommended that you did pre-fill
Excellent video! Thanks for showing us how to use the oil port drain tool.

pretty skimpy demo!
One of the best I've seen! Thanks for the very detailed procedure!
Wow, thanks!
keep looking
I just wish your videos would help us to watch out for the things people did to it before I get the mess.
Thanks for the very helpful video but I strenuously object to the cheap oil. This top spec V6 RAV4 deserves top spec synthetic!
Even cheap oil nowadays is decent oil. I use Walmart SuperTech for my Rav. Good oil at a good price and change 2x annually.

what size of hose did you use to drain the oil from the canister?
Oil capacity according to the OM IS 6.1 QTS
Sizes of everything would have been great
The pan screw is a 14mm hex socket. You need a special tool to remove the oil filter chasis.
yeah, why do a video if you don't say what size bolts they are... basic 101 info video stuff...
Have a decent socket set and you will figure it out.
How many qt of oil does engine take you did not say that in your video.
Best to check you owner's manual.
I came for the info..Stayed for the Rockin Jams
thanks for watching!
How about cleaning where the oil filter sits and using clean oil to lubricant the o rings.
You should start the car, and check for oil leaks at drain plug, oil filter housing.

They are just giving DIYers an added reason to do it.
Thanks so much it's been 10 years since I changed my wife oil in her RAV4
Thanks for watching Ben!
Omg 10ys...lol
And actually my oil port cover didn't come off just the whole assembly at once, makes for a bit of a mess 😖

Liked and subscribed, going to look at a V6 RAV4 today!
They are nice cars. Thanks for watching Dave!
What if u don't have the same 🔧 to take. Off the part to the oil filter off
What size is that hose you used on the oil drain?
This work for a V4 also?
Thanks for the vid; but frack I hate cartridge filters =thanks Toyota:((
Yeah they can be quite annoying. Thank you so much for watching!
Very helpful thanks 👍🏼
An oil filter part number would have been good lol...
Wix 57047 is what I use

What torque for installing the drain plug?
What size of rubber drain hoes?
How many litres/quarts of oil for re-fill?

Where did you get the tools or the stuff you use on the car
Tools came from the Snap-On truck and the parts come from various parts houses. Thanks for watching!
All I wanted was a socket size for the frain bolt!!! Lol
The drain port seems silly.
It's not going to spill that much oil without that.
Seems like more leak points!
What did you use to take the cap off the drain port
Brad, it looks like a 3/8” extension.
very helpfull
Glad to hear that!

can we use any 5W30 oil
Synthetic oil with at least a SN API rating. Thank you so much for watching!
2CarPros thank you
Great and informative video...but man this computer pseudo jazz is soul sucking!!
Thank you for watching! Our new videos contain no music.
You're off your Rockers, the music makes this video great 👍
What the hell was Toyota thinking? This is how oil was changed in the 1950"s! Did they know that we"ve had spin on cartridge filters, since the 1960"s?
Great vid except terrible music
Granted you only need to buy it once but you have to buy that special tool to change the filter. Lame toyota!
Yeah not the best design if I'm honest but if you have the tool it makes it so easy. So I can kinda see what they were going for but, I do much prefer the standard oil filter design. Thank you for watching!
I prefer this design. The spin-on filters are so simple, I get bored. Besides, what's the big deal? It only takes five more minutes.
You can still take it off with an old oil filter wrench without much trouble. Or big pliers honestly
Around 4+ should do it. ,4 is safe. Enough oil to supply the engine. Safe for almost any car is 4 qts. Even a Mercedes. And Honda's? One Quart left. Burn it.
Four quarts is NOT sufficient. That's below the add oil mark on the dip-stick which is already 1.6 quarts low. Well, not low but under full.
This V6 takes a lot more than 4.
4.5qt for the v4 and 6.5qt for the v6
