Phase One of my Vintage Step Van Conversion: Will it Move Again After 17 Years of Sitting?!

  • This video covers the basic work behind getting this beast of a van rolling under her own power again. It's a 1973 International 1210MSC with a 345 V8 gas engine. The running gear is mostly from another model of International truck, designated "1210." It's a pretty rare van from what I've been able to find and getting my hands on parts has been a challenge. But I know that once this project is complete, this van was built to last! It'll make a great adventure home and I can't wait to see what the future holds!
    It was a ton of work to get it to this point and I know that I still have a long road ahead, but I owe you viewers a debt of gratitude. UA-cam earnings have funded this project. It literally would not be happening so quickly, or maybe at all, without the support that you wonderful viewers have shown me and this channel.
    THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!
    I hope to get updates and other project videos rolling out much faster in the near future because of some changes that I'll be making, so stay tuned!
    I hope you all enjoyed this video and know that your continued support means so much to me. Really, thank you guys.
    Best regards,
    -Tate

    i dont know how far along you are in this build, but i highly recommend cleaning and spraying the entire inside with truck bed liner. it will stop condensation from forming after you put insulation in and walls if you do so.

      I have a 1980 van and plan on using 1inch 4x8 ft sheets of alum foil covered insulation R 7 per inch and will layer it and foam the edges .will be put 3 inch thick for a R 21 wall and the floor going to do the same except I will put it under the original floor and covering with flat aluminum roofing to stop road damage .for the ceiling I plan on adding 4 inches on top of existing roof and also covering with aluminum .which can be supported with 3/ 8 thearded rod and fender washer and at the same time support my una stur for my solar 😀

    I noticed a couple of late 50s/ early 60s Metro delivery vans (pretty sure they were milk trucks) on a ranch a few days ago. I was immediately inspired to do this very same thing. Maybe not for me, but my 13yo son was interested in restoring one. We're following your progress

    If you really plan to use that van, get a Holley Sniper EFI carb replacement for it, the old carburetors are a PITA to deal with and suck when changing altitudes. The EFI will pay for itself in fuel savings, that I'm certain of.

    Your videos never cease to amaze me, not only because you're constantly bringing out a new skill I didn't know you had (or learning one), but also, I think, because of their scarcity.
    JoergSprave is a great creator of inventions and content alike, but I can't keep up with his videos because they're so numerous. They're like presidential gold coins. You can get them all, sure, and they're valuable, but they're all the same save the face, and the mint makes them to be collected.
    When I see one of your videos, it's like a gemstone: rare, though sometimes rough cut, with its own character or color.
    Keep on being genuine.

    This has to be one of your very best videos I’ve seen yet. I got exited hearing your story in the beginning then getting to see you put the work in step by step in something that could be very beneficial to you down the road. In a way I felt like I was working on it with you, ready to get to the next step lol. Just subbed your channel today. Congratulations on your channel and your New ( Ole International). Those things are tuff as nails. And the work you put into it today, could possibly last 20 - 50 years down the road. I’ll be watching out for the update to the exterior and interior work. Remember these two things about body work/paint - you can’t rush a fine work of art. And that 85% of painting a vehicle is actually PREPPING. Take your time prepping, taping, sanding, priming and so on, then when you paint, it will not take as long and it will look way better.
    May the Most High Bless you well young man.

    Back in the mid 70s, I bought a small, 15ft international right hand drive mail truck. Made a camper out of it. The best thi ng I did was to re arc the leaf springs and add an extra leaf spring. The difference in stability was a godsend. You might want to install some metal rollers on the bottom of your back bumper because of scraping on hills.

    We have a fully outfitted Frito Lays van tht has a work bench compressor and welder/generator for maintenance. I think if I went downthe road to replace the engine, I would opt for an LS and just be ahead of the game and modernize the drivetrain. Nice work, awesome to see the hard you have done.

    Hey, so on your invisibility shield video… what if you used a clear epoxy to bond lens and the shield together. Then use several straps horizontal to the lenses to clamp the lens/resin/shield sandwich with the wooden template board (the one you used to bend the acrylic).
    You’ll want to use some paper or something to make sure the shield doesn’t end up glued to the template board.
    But I would love to see you make it again!

    I would get two gallons and use the rollers they come with a use bed liner paint Hercules brand that will make it so quiet inside when your driving it then add your interior. I used it on my four door ram and you can barely hear my dual exhaust and zero wind. Cost $200. It’s so easy to apply you will be done in a couple of hours ! I used to drive that truck the noise they can’t pay you enough to drive it and it’s going to be about fun so it’s a must do.

    I drove one of those vans to make deliveries for 2 yrs. Because of the way the suspension is, after a long day, it's "very" easy to get lulled to sleep. Especially if there happens to be a small exhaust leak getting inside the truck :P
    Very nice start overall, especially with initial investment of $50. Can't beat that.
    Will you be upgrading the intake/carb later on down the road?
    To be honest, that van would make a "great" EV conversion. There's tons of space under the decking for battery and electronics bays, and plenty of space for a huge forklift motor (or something equally as powerful) in the engine bay. And all that roof space, for solar panels! Could even make a fold out 3 panel array set for when you're parked.

    • @randomn6473
      @randomn6473  2 роки тому +1

      Always good to see your comments, man!
      Oh interesting! I'll keep that in mind. 🤣 Yeah, the price was definitely right. I couldn't really say no to an offer like that! I probably won't upgrade the carb for a number of reasons, but I did upgrade to a Pertronix electronic ignition module. So it isn't EMP hardened, but I plan on keeping a set of points around just for the occasion of getting her running again. I definitely will be doing an EV at some point, but with the weight of this thing, I'd probably get something lighter instead. Thanks for the comment as always!

      @@randomn6473 That thing weighs around 6000lbs, right? That's well within the range of those e-motors. Especially mating it up with the existing transmission.
      Fork-lift motors are really beefy.
      Would be a nice project to go with for tinkering and such. Now granted, that's not necessarily the "best" option to go with, for sure. Just a really good DIY project, plus all the views you'd get for u/l'n the project videos ;)

    You bought all the nasty that 50 buck could get you. But that's still a solid looking van! I am vary excited to see what you do with it, and how much it costs. I would really like to know how much getting the new drivetrain costed you if you can include that at some point in the videos. But most interesting in the present to me the blowout of this van.. and seeing how much mud can you push out of the van with a pressure sprayer.. that will be most satisfying!

    • @randomn6473
      @randomn6473  2 роки тому

      I'll tell you that it wasn't cheap! But it's still much cheaper than buying a new van. With the drive train essentially being brand new at this point, I think it's worth every penny. The engine was $2,700, the tranny rebuild was $750, the new wheels were $1,400, and the misc. was at least $1,000. But compare that to even a used step van at $15,000+, I think it's worth it! I like the EMP resistance of the old vehicles as well as a "just in case." Thanks for the comment!

    • @baloneyjusticecheezedog
      @baloneyjusticecheezedog 2 роки тому

       @Randomn oh wow... I'm really surprised that it was that much for the motor. You got a vary good price for such a big motor. 2700 seemed like a steal. I was going to ask why not while your replacing all the old stuff, why not go with a new Cummins 3.9 bt, or a new Chevy crate engine... but 2700 a way better price. Was there ever a point you though about getting a different motor, or do you have experience with international Gas motors that makes you particular to them?
      I ask this because I don't have much experience with motors, if it was me looking at the engine bay, I would want to replace the motor that has something with a fallowing like a Chevy vortex or ford powerstroke to be able to tap into the community's help pages and figure out what is wrong with it when it goes pair shaped, or just find solutions for things I don't like after I get it running. There is alot of things I will not buy just cause I am worried about who will help me when something breaks and I have to figure out why it won't work.
      Once again, it seems like you got a vary good price so far to get a running step van. I can feel that thing is going to be really awesome when you are done.
