I am a contractor with fed-ex and run 5 of these plus 3 sprinter vans, but nothing beats the room, cargo capacity and reliability of a step-van, especially with a cummins and allison trans. You got a VERY good deal! They are easy to work on and to flip! Not to mention, they are pretty desirable for their multi-functionality! I bought two of mine for over 9k!
Are you familiar with the 06 MT - 45 with the Mercedes Benz Diesel?
Damn engine is worth more then what you paid for the entire truck. Good buy.
Thank you!

@James Wayne He literally said it
I worked at fed ex from 1999 to 2021 it has a replacement odometer. So it has a few more miles on it but sounds like it runs great nice find
Randy, you definitely scored on this one! Super duper awesome! Here's a bit of information on it. As you probably know, this one's got the 5.9 liter, 24 valve Cummins ISB diesel engine with 185 HP and 420 foot pounds of torque at 1600 RPM, coupled to the Allison 1000 6 speed automatic. 6th gear is like overdrive in a regular automatic transmission. Although when you drive it, it might feel like it shifts 7 times, the torque converter locks up when in 2nd gear. So here's how it goes: 1st, 2nd, lockup while in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. Although some of the earlier models have the AT545 Allison (4 speed), this one has the Allison 1000, found in the diesel GMC/Chevy 2500 Sierra with the Duramax diesel engine. Hope this helps! Definitely keep it around, you'll be able to make some awesome content with it! Perhaps turn it into a house in the back and use it for road trips? I'm sure if you go that route, it'll be awesome!
Wow. Helpful if needed advice you would be first call
@@mikegreenawalt4726 Incredible buy!!! I would love to find one of these. I am in Pennsylvania and i will have to start looking for one of these. I would love to put the Cummins in an F250 with an 18" lift and 44" Ground Hawgs....
DO you know the MPG on this rig? Was thinking of using one of these for a camper van
I like that you shout out the local businesses you use without expecting anything in return. That kind of consideration comes back around over time.
I love to see good hard working people succeed!

Randy there’s a battery cutoff button right below the ac controls when u get done driving it push the button and it’ll cut off the power so there’s no type of draw
That is excellent advice! Thanks!
I work at UPS and they have extremely similar trucks, I doubt they want you opening the back door with the bulkhead door open (the one that lets you get in from the cab. Try shutting that door and then using the watch on the back door. (Don't shut both again obviously, but with you in the back, you can easily open the bulkhead again from inside.) The design of the truck is for one person to operate as fast as humanly possible, while remaining secure. PS. Our trucks definitely start with the cab doors open, we do it all the time. Also very much enjoyed the video, I also think the engine/back sound is way too loud even without the bumper back there xD
I forgot about that. This is true with the newer trucks we have. They won't even start if the bulkhead door is open.
I love how Randy gets just as excited for a FedEx truck as he does the Hellcat :)
I don't think he was this crazy over Christine :-D

This would make an awesome mini motor home conversion!
It sure would!
Me and the Misses were looking at these wanting to make a motor home conversion and travel the country, As Randy said these things go for 15 to 20 Grand and that's no exaggeration. But they are perfect for the job.

@@AutoAuctionRebuilds What are you planning on doing with this old FedEx truck
These trucks were notorious for having new clusters installed, also FYI the doors have sensors on them so in order for you to start the truck all doors usually have to be closed.. You can disable this by disconnecting the negative wire on sensors.. They can be very finicky. Also there's a reset button under the start/stop pad, many times you have to hit that battery reset.. Trust me drove this exact truck for many years..
We bought two Fed ex ground step vans to use for service vehicles. They work awesome. Bought one for 3500 and one for 5000. Both high mileage but excellent service records. Still going strong after 5 years.
Where do U search for these trucks at?
Where did you purchase?
I literally bought my step-van today and it's practically this same one! Gotta tell you, after my nine hour drive home this video is really easing my mind!! Haha I'm only 13 mins in and already you've put me at ease about things I assumed were big red flags like the bounciness and noisiness, (it's my first diesel) so thank you!! Haha I can tell I'll be watching many of your videos 😁👍
Randy I am so disappointed that you missed the opportunity to let us know if the important window works?!? Lmao!!!
That counter is for the loaders in the morning to keep a proper stop count for delivery stops
Thank you for explaining what that is.
Dynamat for noise. Spe ch ial scan toool for diagnostic methods. Uses software to pair wristband with lock. Make a great camper van a feddie
What I was thinking too. There is a vanlife guy here on UA-cam who lives in one.
Randy, you could get her wrapped. No more dinky little AAR stickers on your car windows, get some giant AAR logos on the side of that beast. Promote your channel while you move house, or drive to do Copart walkarounds, etc. Have fun with it!
This brings back some memories, I used to drive for FedEx in lower Hoboken. Most days I got a sprinter, but more then once I had to take one of these big boys. They were almost fun to drive, something about tapping that key and hearing the diesel come to life.
Well, I know a little about this kinda thing being a trucker of 16 years. I would just eliminate the wristband thing altogether. Not sure if you noticed but, there is a keyhole on that back door with a rod going right to that lock. As long as you have the key, should be no issue getting the door open. Would also lube generously the door and lock mechanisms especially after sitting in such a dusty environment. As you know, any vehicle electronics are no fan of dust and dirt. Almost ever semi have driven, the fan is run by air but, pretty sure this one is run by a temp sensor and electric. Might want to check online for a service manual for these trucks. Not sure if any of this info helps but, good luck with this truck, it's cool and can be very useful as a shop truck. Yeah, an AAR shop truck. Might be worth it's weight for you.
Yep. Ex Fedex myself. I've got years of driving these in my past. Ditch the wristband thingy, But these were great tucks. The Fedex designation was W700. As in 700 cubic foot capacity.
I laughed my head off when Randy said I love the most stupidest vehicles 😂🤣😂🤣
A True Eneegnair Right there LOL spell is on pp
I had the Cummings in my pusher motorhome and my Dodge dually, what a great engine, we also have them on our irrigation pumps for our blueberries overhead irrigation, we have 12 separate 16inch deep wells that pump massive amounts of water for freeze protection in early spring! They run like champs and run for days and weeks at the time when needed
I had an old Chev step van years ago. Only a 10ft box, 350 ci Chev V-8 with carb. Automatic tranny. Worked out of it all over the North East US. I worked craft shows, street fairs, festivals, etc. Lived in it almost every week end for years. Loved it. Have motor homes now, retired.
With the truck off and the key in the on position, hold the check engine switch up and count the flashes that the check engine light makes. 4 dashes pause, 5 dashes pause 6 dashes is 456. That’s the fault code. Then google box the code.
@autoauctionrebuilds where are you Randy lol.
Randy, those cars are amazing! Once I bought a 1992 Ford E350 Ambulance with the 7.3l powerstroke Diesel and I simply loved it. I converted in a Motor Home and drove it around traveling and it was the best car I ever had. Believe. Best regars. Love you content.
1992 7.3 was the non turbo IDI engine, not the powerstroke
This came out before the Dex smog control system became mandatory, that alone makes this one more valuable. The Regen system they require now is nothing but a headache, even more so as they age.
PS. The idle up and down toggle is for setting the idle up to at least 1000 RPM when Idling, you should have a cruise control that you turn on first, it's not good on a diesel engine to let it idle without setting the idle speed (RPM) up first.
Yeh was thinking the same thing. All the buses I've ever driven, yes u have to engage cruise control first. Some are 1 push, some are 3 pushed if cruise control on, then hold idle accel until rpms rise.
Randy, you need to go in with this guy and Santas wkshop on a Ranger for next years ranger danger. You got the trailer and now the main tow vehicle. Put some bunks, a stove & porta potty, tools and have a major Blast! You could go get wrecks and other auction stuff from all around the country with that.
We have a truck that still has that bracelet it’s a pretty neat thing, especially unlocking the doors from the outside
Takes me back to driving for UPS. They are loud, noisy and clunky trucks......... but they are fun to drive. Mine was a 5 speed Spicer manual trans though. It's definately interesting rolling around with the doors open.
Back when I worked for Budweiser, I got one of the first diesel beer trucks in our company. 6 wheel, Extended frame 12 bay body. Fun to drive. Then, a couple of years later, I got the first tractor/trailer beer truck in our company. I loved driving that BIG RIG !! It helps to date the Bosses Daughter. She would ride with me on my routes. Maybe, that's why I got the good trucks. Couldn't let his daughter ride out of style~~~.
I can feel the excitement driving that cummins 👌😎the engine sounds great how runs the speeds, Good buy Randy👍 take care and thanks for upload more cool videos✌
Awesome buy, Randy! You have a mobile parts truck now!! With your new house being closer to AAR, this should help you a ton!
I am so grateful to now know I am not the only person who brakes for squirrels.
Thank you for sharing this great sounding truck...at least while it was it was sitting still.
I’m a amazon delivery driver , I drive the stepvan like this one. It’s rough but it’s fun to drive.
If you contact your local Cummins distributor, you can often get a parts list for the engine if you can get the engine serial number. The adapter for reading the engine SHOULD be an inline adapter, an old one. Probably an inline 5 and will need a computer with a serial port or a USB to serial adapter. They do have reading tools but the old ones are hard to get. (I worked for Cummins until Feb of this year. I worked in IT but I worked with the techs and troubleshooting their computers they used to troubleshoot.)
Are all the Cummings engines rebuild able or are the rebuilds more common on boat engines??
What about the fed ex trucks .Where can you get parts?
Look at the sticker above the odometer. It says Odometer changed at 86340.
Probably 863,40x
W700 Freightliner/Utilimaster . Definitely a former FedEx Express van, the slot on the passenger side at the rear is for people to drop off overnight letters. Should be a bar code inside cargo area back by the wheel well so the driver could scan those letters under a drop box stop.
Full service
Randy you got a great deal on the Freight Liner. You will enjoy it also bring some content to the channel. The detail you had done on your truck is awesome. I enjoyed watching the video. 😀👍🇨🇦
My best friend turned that same model in his RV. Took windows out an old Travco motorhome and installed them in it. Glad the BRAKES worked!
When those vans are loaded with boxes and packages they absorb a lot of the sound Randy, there just a big tin box with a motor in them . They make great campers when you convert them too. Love it Randy! 😎👍P.S you could convert the roll up to barn style doors.
How do you convert to bard doors? Very hard to find info on these trucks.
I love how Randy is still somewhat of a kid at heart. It makes the videos wholesome.
I worked for FedEx for years driving these. My truck was bigger than this one tho but headphones are your best friend in these cuz the rattles will give you a migraine. But I loved driving them with the doors open music blasting in the summer time.
It sounds good with that Cummins Diesel! It sounds great, seriously! Wowser, what a deal on getting it at a Super cheap price and it has an excellent body and engine that sounds like it's only a few years old! Good job Cap'n!
You have to get the OBD reader that they use for motorhome and semi trucks, it's a special diesel OBD reader!
that OBD port is a HD-OBD port. the equipment to read it is quite costly. I think it would be cheaper to have a truck shop read the code. Also, the fan is controlled by the ECM. ( i drive a school bus and they have the same OBD port and fan setup)
I lucked onto three of the OBD adapters for these trucks at a surplus auction a few years ago in a lot of stuff I paid a whopping ten bucks for. They sold used on eBay for $600 a shot. Yeah I did good that day.
He needs a J-Pro diagnostics computer
I know this because i work in the truck shop for Travel Centers of America
This truck is actually in much better condition visually and how it sounds / drives than 96% of our trucks out on the road right now for our contractor. Most struggle to start or shift and just bang through gears and yes they do ride hard.... But I love them.
Randy you know your a good driver when you use your mirrors to back up a big unit I drive a city bus 40ft long an a reverse and park it with ease using only mirrors, it make backing up a car child's play bro
yea , i second the mileage as , I saw on the news last year or late 2019 that fedEx was selling there trucks and the company that was buying them was turning back the odometer when then could and would replace with new ones. it was a big thing few years ago. good luck.
I saw that a reseller dealer was suing FedEx and the company selling them he found out because the computer showed the actual mileage. The dealer sold a number of them but some of the people came back on him over the turned back mileage.
That is the ultimate everything truck. Great find Randy!
Thanks man!

I would turn this truck into a homebuilt motorhome. Have a custom heavy duty rear bumper with a hitch installed.
My friend had a used Fed Ex truck like yours he fixed it up real nice as a work/moving truck he made his money back in six months of helping people move.
Great video Randy that would be awesome to own.It has so much potential in my younger days I bought a old carpet van went to the junk yard and bought 8 seats to haul my buddies around I loved that van.
That fan might use an electric clutch to engage/disengage. If nothing else, get a big aftermarket electric fan and mount it out front. Last thing you want is to overheat that motor/transmission.
That set up was one of the best I ever drove during my delivery years
I used to drive for FEDEX GROUND in Texas and drove that same model truck all day long 5 days a week for a few years. They were built to do a job and that is all. You should turn it into an RV.
also diagnostics are/can be done through a laptop and a connector. the actual Cummins hd-obd is expensive.
the idle switches on the left of the instrument panel are for diagnostics and are sometimes not powered without the laptop.
The air filter/breather is all one unit. unstrap the clamps and either take a air hose and blow it out or simply replace the whole thing.
the gauge port you saw is a non-issue. it is what the assembly line uses on initial set-up ant the truck will have them everywhere.
any filter attachet to the engine is a engine filter. the white filter could actually be a fuel filter, that or a water/coolant filter. the oil filter are usually large in size. some fuel filters even have a drain valve on them. trans filters especially on Allison's are just like the cars and are in the transmission pan or at least attached to the trans. check the fan hub for any wobble (bad hub) or any wires connected. that should tell you if it is computer driven. the fan hub will run in lock-up sometimes and other times not
Also they have a remote like a car but different buttons for side dr, back dr, and bulk head door
Bruh it’s 1:53 AM HERE AND Watching this 👌🏽
Daaang!! I appreciate that support!!
Believe it or not but when loaded it actually helps with the sound.
I'm remember back when my dad used to work for Wise and or Frito Lay he drove step vans like that, and sometimes I would ride with him on the weekends.
I Actually own a 2003 Frieghtliner mt45 (formerly operated out of FedEx Home Delivery) and that Cummins engine on mines is BEYOND BADASS.
There is an adapter that changes it from the heavy truck to OBD2 as all the trucks at work has them to use a gps tracker
I drive one of these for a uniform company and the old diesels are the best. Wide open throttle all day lol 😂
Cummins engines are the best known engines and Allison gears are the best and this is a steel of a deal now we are going to witness new contents may be build it to a camper it is going to be amazing congrats Randy
You should put that Freightliner to use! Use that Big ol’ van to move some of your stuff into your new home when it’s finished being built!

That might just be the most fun I ever had watching an AAR video :D Loved the excitement
It was probably sold as true mileage unknown. Due to its age, the mileage requirement is exempt. Also, FedEx drivers are required to only drive with the doors closed. UPS drivers are required to keep them open.
They arent required to drive with the doors open
You needed that van to move when you move into your new home it will come in handy.
Agreed!
You also have a on off valve to the heater under the hood on the hot water line or it would be really hot in the cab in summer. Hope the a/c works. The black things under the back break lights are the back up beep beep beepers.
The top"clamp" lets you remove the air filter cover.
The other filter is in fact the engine oil filter. The transmission filter I think is inside the transmission oil pan.
Never worked on a Freightliner, but have seen the combination engine/transmission combo before.
Penske has those diagnostic tools you need. Maybe you have a friend that might work there or check with the service manger. They might run a diagnostic for you for a fee. Even maybe call freightliner and ask.

@AutoAuctionRebuilds With the Allison transmission, they need a special filter you can only get from an approved Allison dealer/service center(usually a commercial truck dealer) and it's recommended to change the filter when you change the transmission fluid. As far as coolant goes, there are certain kinds for medium/heavy duty commercial trucks- some require a special additive, some don't(I think it's called pre-charge)- some require a certain kind/color due to the formulation of it.. You can not use regular car antifreeze in commercial trucks- Power steering fluid and brake fluid are usually normal car fluid(dot3 or 4 brake fluid, and regular power steering fluid). The Engine increase/decrease switches are usually for a "high idle" function to warm it up faster in the cold temperatures.. cruise control has to be on(if equipped) and you hold the increase button until the idle comes up, usually to around 1000-1500RPM, and hitting the brakes, or turning off cruise control will disengage the high idle.. as far as the air filter goes, you should be able to flip the clamp and slide the cover off and expose the cartridge to replace it. a simple call to a freightliner dealership with your VIN handy would verify/answer all your questions pertaining to fluids/maintenance.. This is all stuff I've learned from owning a 26 ft box truck(06 Freightliner M2 equipped with a CAT C7 with an Allison 2100RDS) so it may differ a little bit from your truck, but it should be similar. Hope it helps.
Dan, I know the this cummins with only 181,000 miles still has a lot left on it, but, I'm curious about the Allison transmission. This particular 6 speed....on this truck......how many miles can you put on it while still feeling secure about it ? Thanking you in advance, if you could give me a rough mileage estimate.
@@davemetz7368 Not sure exactly which transmission was in that truck.. I think it was a 5 spd since it was a lighter duty application.. but either way, with an allison, I'd say you can expect at least 375-400k miles out of it if not more before any major service is needed.. depending on maintenance and whatnot of course. I bought my truck with 90k miles on it and it has over 460k miles on it and the only thing ever done to the transmission was regular fluid and filter changes
@@danlenox1430 thank you for your response Dan.
Used to work for Allison Transmissions for 23 years. Worked on a million of those vans. Most of them had the Mercedes diesel in it.
Also, on the newer ones(2000 and up) they used those wristbands to open the rear door and also to start the engine.
Were the Mercedes any good?
@@razor3003 No, they were junk. You couldn't rebuild them they didn't have sleeved cylinders, and the fuel system was convoluted and overly complicated. It didn't take much to lose its prime and you'd pay hell to get it to start again, cracking HP fuel lines lose one at a time to bleed air out. The EGR valves would go bad all the time, and the coolers. Expensive parts. But DDC didn't make a small engine so we basically bowered this one to fill a gap. A 5.9 cummins would have been far superior. Even a Duramax(which wouldn't fit probably) would have been better.
@@mikeworkman3593 good to know. I'll hold out for an pre-def Cummins.
@@anotherm2722 Yeah I work for the county transit authority now, buses, vans, trams, trolleys, etc. All the buses, trolleys and trams have cummins, the vans are all ford's.
Nothing but issues with egr/def/aftertreatment (epa10 and up) cummins.
But the trans are pre egr 5.9l. They have given us zero issues. And they are 2014s, but they are custom trams, so they have bits and pieces of everything, like dana 60 ford axles and brakes, but the 5.9s are pre egr which means they were made like before 2002 or 2004(cant remember thw year for cummins, Detroit diesels starts egr in 2002.) so they don't have any of thst crap.
You have to worry about egr coolers failing and your engine getting full of coolant when it's not running, from the egr cooler leaking and running into the open exhaust valves.
On the hybrids it'll straight up shear the input shaft if any coolant is on a piston, since they don't have starters the drive unit motors start the engine at full 600 rpm instantly, there's no hydrostatic lock up like with a starter. It's full start and something is breaking lol.
I can see that truck made into a walk thru tool box on wheels. Definitely sounds pretty awesome for the price ya paid. You may need to see if there's any info on that RFID wristband getting charged or a way to replace them. I actually like that whole RFID lock system for vehicles. That filter may be your oil filter because Allison likes to shove the oil filter for the Trans UNDER the vehicle, but getting your hands on a Freightliner service manual might do you good for saying for sure.
Thissssss is the best video of the year here and the most entertaining Oscar and Golden Globe AND Emmy Nominee video ever
LOL Thanks man! Glad you liked it!

That has the infamous digital replacement odometer from that story a while back about FedEx supposedly misrepresenting actual miles deliberately, but you stole that thing so it really doesn't matter. One of the guys affected was a dealer that ended up having to buy back a bunch of trucks he sold after the new owners plugged into them and saw actual milage, keep that in mind when you resell it, but at that price point I can't see anyone complaining.
*Edit, I just got to the part of video where you touched on that a little bit, I didn't watch long enough before commenting I guess 😂
Plus I've seen a story where FedEx was replacing odometers, before sold at auction. Illegal in all states obviously.
@@DieselSgrass allegedly they replaced the odometers when the old ones failed (for whatever reason) , but made no effort to correct the milage on the replacements, and didn't disclose the milage was inaccurate when they sold them, but they laid the blame on a third party company that handles thier sales.
@@jacobemerson8015 thank you, that's what it was. I pictured the 3rd party thing but didn't recall how exactly they were involved.
Randy, the Strattec RFID wristband does not have a battery inside. The pad on the dashboard works like this, with the wristband RFID module on your right wrist, lay your arm down on the pad and press the green button to start. You're not supposed to have to use the actual ignition key. Same with the doors, it's supposed to give you a red light, clunk, and then just pull the door to open. That is, if it's working properly.
Best video of yours of the year! Very well done, sir.
Cool step van! If I were you I would figure out how to get rid of the FedEx electronic nannies. How frustrating! Since this will probably go to someone who doesn’t have a delivery service, the system isn’t necessary. It sounds like a great running vehicle! If I bought it I would turn it into a nice travel van with a comfortable interior. Maybe put some air bags on the rear to make the ride more comfortable? Put a full kitchen with comfortable seating and a bed with a bathroom. Knock some holes in the side and put some nice tinted windows. Add a metal roof with A/C on top. Give it a nice paint job or wrap it and you’ve got yourself a nice R/V!
I agree, make it into an RV, people do that with old busses a lot and I think this would be better economy than that
This was an awesome episode 😂🤘🏽🔥
Hey Randy, check the odometer when the speedo reads speed while stopped. Actual mileage may not be “true” if the odometer counts up mileage when the speedo reads speed when not in motion. You might actually have a lower mileage vehicle then what it reads on the odometer!! Let me know when you check this out!
You might need to replace some fuses in that control panel for the electromagnetic locks or they might have batteries that need replaced. The watch/wrist band might need to be charged or batteries replaced. You might also call or lookup the company that makes the devices and locks.
You can probably replace the battery in the wrist access. Probably a CR2032
Take off the wrist band and look at the back, might be a battery cover there
No battery to replace I got program cards to reprogram wrist bands
RFID!!!. No battery. Same technology in your debit card...
Austin is a good dude.
on the air filter you undo the bottom clamp you pointed at and undo the snap band clamp, the entire shiny item is the air filter, the fan will not kick on till above or about 210 degrees, the filter you pointed at under the alternator is the engine oil filter, the transmission filters are internal, and sometimes they have a spin on external filter mounted on the frame, you need cummins insite or another cummins compliant program to ready med/heavy duty engines.
Randy the check engine light/button should have a bulb in it when you rock the switch it should give you blink codes so check the bulb and the connector are there first may save you buying code reader adapter.
We saved a squirrel! That needs to be on a shirt 🤣
Not sure if it’s a nation wide sale but my international dealer had group 31 batteries for $61 this month
Well damn!!! LOL

Welcome to the diesel world, big batteries. :) This was funny, entertaining.
Is the mileage going up also as it sets? I see the trip is going up. Also, I would just disconnect that watch strap door mechanism.
