Actually he's Korean American so his first language was violin.

Such a quiet, humble, and articulate MONSTER of a player..🤘
i have to be honest though: it's NOT "opinion" that those basses / guitars have a pickguard that scientifically reminds of a TOILET SEAT. That's not opinion! It's an oval in the middle! Come on!!!

@@dumpygoodness4086Ahahahah!! It really reminds of a toilet seat... But I think it looks pretty good, specially in a black bass.

All the jokes about John never speaking are getting pretty old yet people keep telling them. He's definitely the most quiet and reserved member of DT but that doesn't mean he's some emotionless drone. There's a ton of personality in his playing and in his performance on stage, he just expresses himself in a much subtler way than the rest of the band does. And honestly, he seems very comfortable in this interview, like alot more than he normally does. I'm really happy that for once he doesn't seem miserable doing interviews like he used to.
He is not a emotionless drone?!!
I thought he is?
How did you figure that out?
He typically hates speaking because he feels limited by having 2 vocal folds instead of 6 strings, that's all.
He was always quite, reserved, respctful, soft spoken, and a thinker.

JM: No, the other guys pretty much just cover up my sound.
Myung & Mangini should at least co-produce the albums so 1) we can hear the bass and 2) the drums have some dynamic range instead of being compressed all to hell.
@@diegomorales8616 XD
I think the bigger reason he gets lost in the mix is his tone kind of sucks these days. It isnt bright enough and sounds way too farty on the low notes to cut through. On its own it sounds...okay. but typically to be heard in a mix your isolated sound needs to be a lot brighter than sounds ideal.
@@diegomorales8616 Drum n Bass with Mangini and Myung? Hell yeah!
@Toxic Potato facts.
My hero in terms of bass, a quiet and super professional man, passionate about music, super polite and who influences millions of bass players around the world, with his creativity, efficiency and good musical taste. I am very grateful to be living in the same reality that Mr. Myung is in.
I don't play bass. But I watch this because I like listening to John talking. He may not talk much but definitely not a silent type person. He looks very passionate and enjoy talking about bass. And lastly his playing and tone is as ferocious as any metal bassist out there.
plus his voice is super smooth and calming
Love his tone here!
He is the silent man
I think to put it bluntly he is the best metal bassist out there and the rest are striving to achieve this level of proficiency.
The tone when it’s not in the mix is brutal, yet when you add in everything else it sits so nice
John Myung - a true bass hero all these years. At first glance, he is so modest, but everything changes when he goes to play on stage.
Respect!👍
Because of John Myung, gotta hit LIKE immediately before watching the video!
So here we have a lot of expensive gear John uses to get that signature "barely audible in the mix" tone. Cheers!
It's much more audible in the album Distance Over Time, though.

John Myung never talked this much in his entire life so far. What a feat.
Kudos to the animation editor! You did a great job with John Myung.
Never heard him speak more than a few words. But then this.... it changed my life forever !!
Great rig rundown. I think Myung's tone took several unfortunate turns since their first albums (I personally think his Spector setup in the studio for Images and Words sounded 100 times better than his current tone). It is great nonetheless to know what he is using now a days and also to hear him playing the actual instruments. Thanks Kris and Thomann team ;)
A proper criticism.
Yeah, pretty sure you won't get any disagreement that Images and Words was the best DT has sounded, for all the musicians.
@@RickReasonnz Except for the drums lmao
Agreed. It sounds like he almost trying to get that Spector "growl", and it's just distorted. Just go back to Spector, or get the Tone Pump installed on the Bongo.
My wish to see sir John Myung to play a Dingwall bass. 😁
Me too. I think for the stuff he plays the dingwall are better suited
I really loved this series about the rig of DT members, especially with the technicians behind all that. We always praise the musicians, but it's essential to recognize all those guys that studied hard and really have tons of knowledge to helps a lot the quality of the sound.
I always feel so privileged to hear John Myung talk. ^___________^
That Myung mask they put on the actor was very well made!
I think we can all agree we’ve been waiting for a rig rundown from John Myung.
I normally just focus on the Guitar work and the vocals but when I actually tried to listen to the Bass on some Dream Theater songs I realized that John Myung is a beast. Especially on his little solo on metropolis.
I think he’s best bass tones was on the falling into infinity album! Also miss his tung and Yamaha basses
I agree...very pure and monstrous piano-like tone.

Why isn't this on spotify yet?
Awesome bass playing,I like it
He plays very heavily with his right hand!
Pity there was no detailed overview on the HH configuration as the corresponding Warwick basses (eg the Corvette $$) have switchable humbucker coil positions.
I saw the setup the other year in the UK and he was running a Demeter Poweramp on a dummy load for the overdriven sound so I wonder why he has changed? What role do the ABMs play?
How does having the compressor at the front end affect nuanced playing or is it just for smoothing out peaks rather than make up gain?
John is the only reason I play bass, I can only dream of becoming a god like he is
Did you bring an offering? You can’t come into the presence of a GOD like John empty handed...
In a time where you can find out anything about anything online, it's amazing that as a DT fan for almost 20 years I still know next to nothing about JM and am still learning about him with this video lol.
Exciting stuff 😳
Interviewer: This is the only bass you're playing?
Myung: I have a few other ones.
- shows the same bass with a different devil pact -
I think his old Yamaha’s from back in the day looked better and his tone was a bit less muddy then personally. But he’s a helluva player!
You're the best, John!
I wish I had a tenth of the talent John has in his pinky. Such an amazing musician and gentleman.
I'm a simple man, whenever I see John Myung I hit the like button.

I'd actually forgotten his voice, i've heard Adam02 in my head for years

Many people complaining and criticize the tone but if you all didn't know the new album pretty much has muddy guitar riffs and basslines. The new Guitar pickups John released are muddy compared to his old illuminators. The album DOT itself was meant to sound distorted.
I always wondered why he went away from Yamaha. The RBX 775 line he played i thought sounded better.
Images and words blew my mind and in all the 20 years since its release it still gets me in the feels...
You know what, its really nice to hear him speak

He's using this shape when he goes for groceries
But is he a race car driver?
Playing cobalt strings right now as well on my 7 string guitar. Balls to the walls sound. Highly recommend.
I had the Cobalt Slinkys on one of my StingRay 5 bassed and loved the meat they gave to the tone. What I didn't love was the (relative) short time they kept their tone. So I switched back to Elixir Nickel, who keep the tone as long as they brake.
But on my old 1964's Fender Precision I play EB Cobalt Flats. This is a different ballgame. Beeing flatwound they don't allow sweat and dirt to dampen the high end over time, so they will keep their tone much longer. They are quite brilliant for flats, they add some meat to the tone, have a good tension and feel, and I am on the way to get me another set of them for my MiM Precision 50's Classic. My Vychodil P5 allready has a set on. I like the tone a lot.
Tony Nguyen I didn’t dig them in guitar or bass. The sound is as advertised, but I found they went dead very fast. On a guitar it’s not as big of a deal because strings are often changed frequently but on bass I couldn’t justify the cost-to-life ratio.
Obviously I’m a fan . The music “speaks for itself “ when you see them live ! A combination of accelerating and falling with some flying in there as well ! It will make you shudder! Probably the most incredible thing you will witness for the some of £80 .
Look how happy this dude is just being in front of Myung!! Thats special to even me . I effen love myung!!!! Im the biggest myung fanboy I can promise u guys that

Great bassist but his amp always sounds SO muddy. I’d love to hear him play his parts through a clean sound.
Listen to his master tracks from Falling Into Infinity. You're welcome.
@@benbond3433 fii is actually the only dt album with a decent bass sound , I like his playing but his tone.......not
@@frk75 His tone went from AMAZING on FII, to absolute garbage on SFAM. I saw the latter live, Feb of 2000...best show EVER, but worst bass tone ever. JM's tone was so overly processed, it sounded like an electronic mess. Luckily, visual-wise, I managed to get right up to the barrier in front of him for the whole show...he was maybe 15 feet away. Like Jason Newsted watching Cliff Burton live, my jaw was on the floor while watching JM fly effortlessly through the songs.
I thought it was cool when I was singing along, and James pointed and smiled at me with a wink. My buddies and I met all of them earlier in the day at a record store meet-n-greet. Portnoy was a little rude, stuffing his face with food, but maybe he was in a pinch to eat, who knows. They were all generally nice, with the nicest being James and Jordan. JM's handshake is STRONG, btw (not surprisingly).
Petrucci terms.
I guess it depends what you're listening on. That's one of the downers of life as a recording musician. You know what it sounds like in the studio and on your personal system when you check a mix before giving the ok, but once it's out there in the world it is subject to the device and environment that people listen on / in. I rarely buy music these days but I did buy A Dramatic Turn of Events on CD. There is a lot of great music on it and great performances. The bass sounds great to me. It growls when it needs to. It's smooth when it needs to be. I saw the band at a place in NJ called The Birch Hill back around 1995. I remember his bass sounding quite strong and punchy there too. I listen now in an older F150 that I got recently and those stereos are always great. Great detail on the whole mix .... so hearing JM's bass is easy. My previous truck, a Sierra had an aftermarket stereo. Not as great as the F150 stereos, but the disc and bass still sounded really good in that. However, when I bought the F150, the previous owner had the bass and treble maxxed out! I thought I was going to need new speakers for sure, .... BUT NOOO! It just needed to be adjusted to some kind of sanity! That's another thing; how people have their audio devices set.
I am recording some new instrumental stuff that I hope to have done by winter. I am not really musically active these days, but it's hard to walk away from and getting great bass recordings can be a challenge. I am a guitarist, so while my guitar gear is nice, my bass gear is very small and basic. There are a lot of options to get good bass sounds, but to a lot of us, getting the bass right is one of the biggest mix and mastering challenges. I was really surprised to see Jerry here! He's an old friend who I have not seen since around 1990! Glad to see that he's still out there living the life! This Is The Life he belongs to!!
I love how he is such an aggressive bass player with a HUGE sound and he has a very soft speaking voice.
Myung right hand is playing soo insanely amazing
Wow...Myung uses high action, who would’ve known?
It makes sense for the times when he’s just laying it out underneath everyone else but man...that’s gotta get crazy for some of those really fast unison runs.
And he isn't using a pick like other fast Playing metal bassist. 🙆♂️

4:12 hhhhhhhhhhh LOVE IT, I LOVE THIS MAN
High action metal squad, represent
Raise them strings up, boi
I was going to answer "low action rules" but I'm actually afraid you'll flick me on the nose and I'll explode into giblets
how high the action is?
Low action is a bullshit. Look what action have John Patittuci, Janek Gwizdala, Pino Palladino, Nathan East, Steve Swallow, Carol Kaye, etc.... They can't have low action because thy will get fretbuzz. None of them have one. Most of music needs nice round tone without buzz. Look at double bass players. They must work on instrument to get great tone and intonation. Same with bass guitar. I can't stand listening bass players which are crazy about "low action". For most music low action is when you can play with your amount of attack and articulation without having fretbuzz. Period. Most bass players set it by the feel. I set my basses by feel. I don't know if my action is low, high or whatever. It works for me because I can get wide range of articulation and get great sound without fretbuzz. Don't be too much crazy about that guys. Look at both John's or Mike. They PLAY not think about action or sth like that. They set it and forget it. They focus on music not about so unimportant details.
@@jbaranowski1990 I appreciate your point of view, but you really can't make such comparisons, almost claiming "high action" as the common aspect every successful and famous popular music bassist have in common. action depends of every single bass player's playstyle and tone they look for. fret buzz is a completely other thing that only comes around when a bass' action isn't setup correctly, or when the player develops a bad technique.
@@xRyuzakii I didn't Jai. You make such a comparison. Those are just examples. It's not a zero-one thing and please read it with that approach thank you.

Holy @#$%!!!!
Myung speaking??!!😱😱
Although I have a huge respect for him , I never understood why he likes this kind of tone. It's like Lemmy's tone who was practically doing the rhythm guitar in Motorhead and not the bass virtuoso..
Insight99999
It’s about how it interacts with the band. Distorted, scooped bass supports heavy guitars and exists nicely with a punchy kick drum. When you’re solo, it’s not the greatest sound but it serves the group. It took me quite a few years to understand that with my guitar sounds. It’s been kind of the “modern metal bass” sound going back to the early 90s. The first place I remember hearing that kind of tone and going “oh wow...that’s different...” was on metallica’s black album
@@manifestgtr Thanks for the feedback. I partially agree because his sound was much cleaner in the early 90s. ("Learning to live "for instance etc) The sound is more like this since he plays Music Man's Bongo. But it's not the instrument itself because when we listen how Dave LaRue uses it also in prog, it's clearly a matter of effects choice. But I agree for the "distorted" sound that fits with the heavier metal parts
The reason I love Jelly Jam so much is that you can hear him playing so much more than on Dream Theater records. Such an original n innovative artist but so under appreciated.
I love that album too. Some bass lines are audible but you can hear almost everything with ear plugs.

Wow, I never realised that he uses that much distortion on his tone. I always thought he's more of a clean bass tone player.
I guess that it depends on the song but distortion ... up to a point really brings out bass definition in a mix and what often sounds good in a mix is less impressive isolated. Overall, he and Jerry really seem to know what they are doing.

Great work on this. Your interview was a bit cleaner/smoother than the other Thomann crew handling the synths and drums - guessing you must have studied English a bit more and may have spent a bit more time in an English/American culture.
