Anyone who doesn’t have hearing loss - and I’m someone who has hearing loss - probably doesn’t understand how frustrating it is. Thanks to Mr. Simon for sharing his experience.
Life is way wiser than we are...just look at the intricacies required for the functioning of the human mind and body not to mention Creation itself. When life presents us with something we don't like or want, in reality, it's offering us an opportunity to change our direction for our BENEFIT which few people seem to realize at the moment but often understand in retrospect. Don't know why Paul's not taking the hint...it's time to focus on more important aspects of his life as he nears its end (at least here in the physical realm). I truly appreciate his musical contributions but perhaps it's time to focus on resolution of internal issues or some type of world or community service work. Consider the possible opportunities. 💞
I admire what he is doing- coming to terms with the changes that happen with aging - and working with what he has . I know that I will play my guitar and sing as long as I am able and will continue to write songs as long as the inspiration is there.
God love ya Paul Simon. I've listened to you for most of my life. Its hard to see your favorite icons becoming old and having issues. I admire his tenacity to continue to perform his art. Much love Paul. ❤
Such a national treasure and perhaps the most gifted singer and songwriter in American pop history. And don't forget that he has always been an absolutely phenomenal guitar player. His lyrics are stunning, evoking various emotions as nobody else can. Perhaps my favorite lyric of all time from him comes from the song America. "Cathy, I'm lost, I said... though I knew she was sleeping." The whole song is about searching for (and not finding) direction, and you can just feel the sense of loneliness in that line.
I really feel for him. I woke up three years ago and was deaf in one ear--it happened overnight. Bi-Cross hearing aids haven't helped much. I've got 100% in the good ear, but the bad one is operating at 20%. Unless you go through this, you don't understand how depressing/frustrating this can be.
Thank you for all the wonderful songs, the joy and the knowledge your music and special spirit have given me, given so many people. The 3 monitor thing seems to work well! 🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶🌟👍
You are amazing Paul , you must know you are loved by so many. Miss you and your incredible talent. Can't wait " Lord willing" to hear you again. However, we still have you, thats a blessing as well. Ca calling!
Have loved his music from the beginning and will always love him as a musician and singer. His music is the definition of beautifully expressive poetry!🥰🥰🥰. Thank you so much, Paul, for sharing your wonderfully brilliant gifts!
@@MalEvansUSA You were there. You know exactly why he did everything he did. So good that God placed you in judgement over your fellow human beings. You know every heart and are wise enough to be judge and jury.
I really appreciate him being so open about it. Hearing is really a challenging one when it starts to go, especially from those of us who built our lives around hearing with music or other auditory work. Very courageous and he’s thinking of the bigger picture, he thinks about others in the same struggle if he’s doing an interview like this. Thank you, Paul Simon.
I have hearing loss and use technology for hearing loss. I only play mostly with a guitar in a quiet room while recording. It is a wonderful feeling to accomplish and complete a song without interference.
I can both appreciate and relate to Paul’s disappointment as an aging musician having his health impact his ability to do what he enjoys and loves. I am seventy five and have played guitar for over forty years, and I have developed severe osteoarthritis in both of my hands. I can no longer form chords with my left hand and I very much miss the pleasure I derived from playing my instruments. In looking at my situation I researched my potential alternatives to giving up playing guitar altogether and discovered that I could try playing slide guitar. I did find that I have had some success with playing slide, and like Paul as he ages if life gives you lemons make lemonade.
People don't understand how devastating about hearing loss. I was born with hearing loss, love music, but as I get older, I get scared . How will I become?
...always been one of my favorite guitarists ( yes, along with tuck andress, stevie ray, chet, g.e. smith, john hammond, willie, etc. ) because of his wide ranging rhythms ,finger picks & hard scrubbing, always percussive !
If I could take only one album to a deserted island with me it would be Simon & Garfunkel’s greatest hits. And I was a teenager in the 80’s loving VanHalen and Whitesnake and so on! ☺️ Love Simon’s solo stuff, too. He’s a legendary genius of course. ❤️
It's crazy that he mentioned Matisse, as I immediately thought of him as this interview began; thinking of how an artist loses the ability to use his "tools" and what options are available to them. Matisse was unable to hold a paint brush later in life so he figured out how to hold/use a pair of scissors and cut out his visions in paper-creating some very memorable art. Let's hope Simon can "cut out" some new-cool art.
Saw Paul Simon on his farewell tour when he came to Orlando. It was astounding! Always the gifted artist, arranger and director as he was since the very beginning of his career.
Suddenly noticing real age in his voice. Sad to hear him talking about his depression with the losses. The longer we live, the more we have to leave behind. Aging isn't for cowards.
I stupidly exposed myself to loud amps and cranked up the headphones a bit too much in my youth, and now as I head toward my 7th decade I've got some hearing issues too. I'd advise young people to protect your ears to the extent you can.
Andrija Puharich and Pat Flanagan developed transdermal hearing technology for electrostimulation of hearing, which improved hearing in subjects with sensorineural hearing loss. For something like tinnitus, which Huey Lewis suffers from, neurotology is the sub-specialty which treats that condition.
The man is over 80‘s years old. Old age sucks but thats the natural path of live. Everybody who has aged 75 years of age can thank the stars in heaven to get this old. He looks and talks a lot better than his friend Artie who looks and sounds like a refugee from the Walking Dead show.
Honesty to yourself is tough & important. We were at a Stephen Stills show a few years back and it was really bad. It was sad and we felt bad for him. Still hearing this I have to say sorry you should stop.
Someone please tell Paul about ‘earlens’. I’ve had them for about a year and for me they were life changing. Orders of magnitude better than conventional hearing aids.
I had some hearing loss in one ear in my 20s. No one cared. Would have been nice to have work supervisors, or any family member give me direction. Diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease in 2016 at age 50. And still not told then Lyme disease can cause it. I read about it later that it IS a symptom of Lyme. I had many, many other odd symptoms that I just lived with clear back to grade school, high school and my family members ignored. Lyme affects every part of your body. It's like having termites in your house for 50 years and having no idea. There are some alternative regenerative doctors out there trying red-light therapy, laser, PRP, stem cells you name it to regain hearing. Look outside the box "conventional" medicine and there's a big promising world.
Did you get a cochlear implant? Or are you wearing hearing aids? Are you using the Roger Assistive listening device? It really helps you hear distinctive sounds, speech .. when the room acoustics are terrible.
Hearing is not covered by Medicare, as you mentioned, but insurance which is supplemental to Medicare might, depending upon availability where you live. For example, in at least California, Colorado, and Washington state the company Kaiser Insurance has "Senior Advantage" which covers some hearing issues and for some it has no monthly cost. (I'm no expert at all, just someone who knows someone covered by Senior Advantage for hearing aids and tests.)
Music: When your ability to still play/perform is THE MOST important thing to get true value out of your life, instead of moving on. Sad or inspiring, depending on your point of view I guess.
I question Paul’s true personality v. his interview personality. I remember in the last 1980s or early 1990s when he tried to write a Broadway musical-“Capeman.” It closed in previews. And I remember someone associated with the production was anonymously quotes in The New York Times saying, “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person…”. They were being sarcastic, if the tone did not come through here. I’ll admit, there are plenty of Broadway musicals where the music is not that great, but if you listen to the songs from “Capeman” you want to scream, “Have you ever seen a Broadway musical?” Some of the songs are more appropriate for some album entitled “I’m Trying to Drive You to Suicide.”
Surprised he's not using in-ears if his comment on using speakers and a wedge is correct. Perhaps his situation is different that makes in-ears not possible.
Sounds like he had a Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and waited too long to take steroids. This type of hearing loss is unrelated to loud noise exposure or old age.
