  • Huey Lewis and the News are in the mood to celebrate, joking about their age as they prepare for the release of what is almost certainly their last album, titled "Weather." At 69, Lewis, who has performed in bands for most of his life, had no intention of slowing down, but his diagnosis of Meniere's Disease - a hearing disorder which has affected his voice - has made the decision for him. John Blackstone reports.

Meniers is a strange disease. It is often accompanied w debilitating vertigo. Often times there are fake noises that the ear is always hearing, like crunching leaves. So he doesn't have typical deafness. It often sounds like trying to hear through a broken speaker. So even if there is no actual hearing loss, the other sounds drown out what he can hear. But there are days, weeks...that the noises subside. Those are the days that he should take full advantage of, and go out and listen to everything he usually misses. Cutting the audio nerve is a potential cure for the maddening noise, but it will guarantee true deafness and may not eliminate the noise. People have become suicidal when it is really bad.

I've had Meniere's for over 25 years. It took me out of work and into early retirement. It's a very debilitating condition. I've lost a great deal of my hearing. The ringing is constant. The vertigo is episodic. It can fluctuate from mild to severe. Each day is different and you can never tell. There is no warning before an episode. Some days are so bad I'm spinning out of control and vomiting... can't even get out of bed. Thank goodness it's lessened somewhat over time. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I know what you go through Huey!

I'm sorry for what you're going through and I understand. I have tinnitus ringing all the time, but what's worse is that I have lymphedema which swells up your body because the lymphatic system isn't working. It's terribly painful and can lead to cellulitis and death. When we were younger, we never imagined having these problems, did we? Things we never heard of before a diagnosis runs our everyday lives now.

I really wish Huey had talked more about Meniere's Disease and if he has had the violent episodes of extreme dizziness, nausea, and balance issues along with the partial deafness that those of us who have developed this awful disease have. I was also hoping he would share what his doctors have prescribed for him to take and do to help him with this disease since we know he can afford the best possible doctors. I am hoping something develops that will help him so he can sing again.

Being blunt: there have ALWAYS been ways to fudge this. In the 1960s, the Wrecking Crew did almost ALL the instruments on any recording. I'm still insulted Karen Carpenter didn't INSIST on being their drummer. I LIKE her better than I liked Hal Blaine's playing. He SOUNDS like a studio guy who doesn't GAF.
She'd still be ALIVE now if they let her drum. Nobody can SEE how fat you are or think you are behind a gigantic Ludwig kit. At the end of her life, at all of about 32, she looked like she was 60.
She used syrup of Ipecac repeatedly and it ATE her heart muscles.
Oh, lots of splicing of tape, btw. I don't know WHAT they did live. Lip-synch, I imagine. Or mix it VERY heavily to the pre-recorded track, over the live one. Madonna couldn't get 3 seconds of on-tune singing without major splice work. I know people who were there. But they said she got better.

My sister and I grew up on Huey Lewis and the News. Now turning 50 this year I experienced something similar. I had a concussion from a freak accident, which caused bi-lateral tinnitus, ear pain, hearing loss, and occasional headaches. For now, 8 months into recovery nothing has improved. My doctor told me this was my reality for the rest of my life. Initially, it about drove me insane from discomfort; later causing depression knowing there was no known cure. I'm not a professional musician, but I play piano, write music, and love music in general; therefore constantly exploring every genre. Sadly, the tone of music often hurts my ears and sometimes I can't hear it completely from loss and the high pitch of the tinnitus (which btw sounds like the sound a bright light bulb or fluorescent makes...I often refer to it as the sound of silence) covers over what I might hear. I am also starting to lose my eye sight due to idiopathic block of both retinas. I sound like a mess. LOL But I can sympathize with him and empathize. Nothing is ever really the same. It's like losing a limb; only no one sees that you lost it. I send him hope and acceptance; and some more hope. He's still a cool dude to me and his music is etched into my memories. Thank you.
