@@kyurei4478 Very important concept to realise, but offence is 100% taken, never given. If you are offended by most things you need to do a bit of self-reflection before becoming reactive
@dirkdeklerk325 Dark humor is an important concept to realize that disproves this one. Offence can totally be given and that's even why that will be considered funny to some. If you're never offended by anything you equally need to do some self-reflection before labeling others of having no humor.
Years ago this Aussie was having a meal at a pub in Buckinghamshire and the portly (ex-RAF) chef joined us at our table for a chin wag. Rowan Atkinson has been pro the right of comedians to offend since *long* before the modern "woke" culture. Back in the day, Rowan and other comedians had to fight against "heresy" laws. First for the right to offend christianity (70s and 80s) and then the right to offend islam (00s). Atkinson is just being consistent on a decades long stance he has had on the right of comedians to offend. "Woke" is just another religion to him.
Woke is a facist racist nazi narsisist cult of idiot bullies. Woke are some of the most stupid and least tolerant people in existence, and still claim they are tolerant... When I was little, my brother called me ugly. I went crying to my dad. Instead of scolding my brother for saying something mean, he turned to me, and in a strict voice said, “Get a thicker skin.” One of the best lessons of my life.
I'm not a dad, but I'd probably say "do YOU think you're ugly?" "well no" "then don't let it bother you. he's just trying to make you mad. let it roll off."
Granted, I am seventy years old. But, for god-sake, whatever happened to, "Sticks and stones may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me?" When I was growing up, that's what all adults told kids who were whining about "Somebody said something mean." That, and "Don't have such a thin skin." Western society at large has become so pussified, it makes me puke.
because we have, in these past 70 years, in fact discovered that constant exposure to certain (groups of) words actually DOES have lasting effects, and we might have to mind what we say to people a bit more.
@@TheJH1015 With all due respect, I fail to see the logic in your argument. What you just said is more or less stating the obvious, of course hate speech can have lasting effects on people, this does not mean that the solution is incriminating the right to free speech. I am American and European (Danish to be specific), legally connected to both countries. I have seen firsthand what being too hyper progressive does to people (Denmark), and what freedom to do hate speech without consequences (some places in USA) does to people. One makes the population too sensitive that they take offense from almost everything, the other allows people to commit genuine hate speech without consequences. The difference between hate speech and the First Amendment (The right to free speech, practice of religion, etc) is that the First Amendment doesn't justify hate speech, nowhere in it does it say racism or blind hate is allowed. So what you're interpreting as the result of free speech, is in reality the result of old racism that the world has become too progressive to forget and move on from. Ordinary people don't care about ethinicity, about pronouns, about sexual orientation, they care about living comfortable lives and going about their business. They will look at people from those groups and treat them like normal ordinary people until they give them a reason not to, which is precisely what woke culture, or what some people call the Woke Virus, has done to the world. The easiest way to move forward from racism, from hate speech, is to simply stop talking about it and making it the primary topic of many conversations. This is not to say groups who genuinely do commit hate speech for no reason should not be punished, they should because it is malicious use of their God-given right, but it should not incriminate or hinder the right to free speech nor the right to free expression for everyone else.
Mr. Bean is very wise indeed. Yes, the only way to address the things that offend is to _address the things that offend us_ . Not to hide from them, or to try to hide them from ourselves and others. But to talk about them, and why they offend us. Or why we should challenge them. We shouldn't be recalling and stopping publication of Dr. Seuss books, we should be discussing why the few examples of caricature are offensive, and how to address them. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
The bit starting at 3:24 is one of the best advocates of free speech *ever.* Truly. Which is very much in jeopardy today, in most countries, unfortunately. What's frightening is that the speech was made about 11 years ago... And no progess has yet been made.
Well, as a Frenchman, If I have thought an Englishman would have taken the defense against wokisme censorship i'd not believe it but it is what it is. Sir Rowan Atkinson, I consider you the new Churchill of our time against censorship. Keep going!
This is why we need comedians ... deep , witty insights on or just over the edge of "moral". Sometimes it might offend even me but it keeps us on our toes and it puts things in perspective. Cancelling someone just because someone disagrees or gets offended by something someone said in a certain setting is utterly ridicules and a sign of sheepish behavior .. just follow the masses so your opinions don't stand out. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING could and should be a topic of discussion and jokes. Getting insulted and having feelings, SO WHAT? It's up to you how you react to insults, sarcasm or criticism that is sure to come on your path in life.
I do think some topics go a little too far though. Like recent news and deaths, jokes about those come over as insensitive especially if it's all around the people mourning victims or being shocked still by big events. Like those topics should be handled with care. And not every claimed dark joke is actually dark humor. Sometimes it's just someone judging a minority. Like the guy that made a retard joke that included genocide. Like that was too far in my opinion. That's not dark humor anymore that's signaling someone doesn't have a right to live in your opinion. And one of the rules of free speech is still that your content can not inspire hate against any kind of minority. Which that joke did and the guy did need to apologize for it and do community service with a bunch of people that are mentally handicapped. But like regular humor is fine even dark humor or humor regarding discrimination. Just make sure the jokes themselves don't entirely denounce someone else's experience but that you laugh at the ridiculousness of why someone gets discriminated against or why a discriminatory mindset can lead to hilarious situations. I don't mind those at all. They put in perspective how absurd social rules are while bringing attention to heavy topics.
@@junrobin9335 If you think it is too far, you have right to ridicule that opinion and the person too. You have that right too. The problem of people today is they take stupid words too seriously - they actually give power to them this way - instead of ignoring or ridiculing them, they consider them relevant. We need to learn to distinguish between rubbish and valuable speech first of all and approach them accordingly. I think the problem of this era is that many people, not guided by natural selection of ability to publish ideas (worked before with official media but collapsed with introduction of social media), are confused and do not distinguish between natural authority (people who know what actually makes sense, and there is also good reason to believe them) and random guy with no expertise. Also, people are so confused now they often cannot distinguish between humor and a speech intended to be serious.
@@eltwarg6388 I am saying that freedom of speech has a limit on it. Aka, don't spread hate. There have been comedians who have caused bad people to get bad ideas. Hell they got cited as inspiration. And when you got die hard people telling you to off yourself cause they got the idea from a joke. The joke itself clearly didn't land and caused societal problems instead of bringing them to light and ridiculing how stupid they are. It is still punishable to incite violence against other people. I agree that most humor isn't that. But the fact I've seen a few cases of it go incredibly south. Clearly the guy didn't mean to inspire the guy to off his special needs child, that is still what that joke inspired the guy to do so. Comedy isn't just a mindless amount of words that become so silly you laugh at it. It's pointed critique on society made more palatable in the form of a joke. If the joke inspires others to cause harm it's not a joke anymore.
@@junrobin9335 I think you overestimate that kind of inspiration. We all should shut up because some guy can understand it wrong? We should rather not drive cars because of 1000s of deaths on roads daily then. Any psychopath dare to call some joke reason for his action will be reason for us to limit freedom of speach? Do you really believe he would not get that inspiration somewhere else sooner or later? I can see this as a problem if we talk about a system of manipulation, like a sect or a violence spreading organization, but random joke?! No, I have to disagree.
@@eltwarg6388 Clearly shows you''ve been privileged enough to never be the target of a joke ending in more than one case of unneeded violence. And again freedom of speech literally states that you have all the freedom you want as long as it does not infringe on the freedom of someone else. This is specifically defined as not spreading ideas of violence. Telling a crowd to put the mentally ill in the german showers is pretty much equal to inciting violence, especially if it succeeds in it's upset. He may have meant it as a joke, but that is still a consequence of his words. And like you said so eloquently before, you have to deal with the consequences of your words. In this case it's court cases, a fine and community service with the people he said in a joke should die. Comedy is the art of language not the art of mindless spouting offensive stuff and standing by for validation. You still need an actual punch line and a valid criticism on society. His joke had neither of those.
I've been on a Mister Bean binge for the past week. Atkinson is a genius, absolutely one of the funniest men of all time. That he is as intelligent and well spoken as he is on top of his comedic talent is mind blowing. He is a national treasure, a crown jewel if you will, that dazzles the entire world.
Totally agree with Mr. Atkinson. With the exception of some special cases that should be treated as such, it would be a benefit for humans to step away from the hyper-sensitivity promoted by the so-called "progressive" (or "liberal") and embrace the idea of developing immunity. Hyper-sensitivity makes us much more vulnerable; immunity makes us stronger.
What are the special cases that should be treated as such? Is not the core of the discussed problem in defining the set of special cases zero, too narrow for some or too wide for others?
I'm from the time when everyone was entitled to their opinion... I still believe this to be right. Sir Rowan bringing this into the conversation is like a balm of common sense which is so very needed in today's world. Things have become silly and centered on the ridiculous. That what makes no sense is allowed and sense in censored. How crazy. We need to turn back to tolerance and embracing each other's differences. The truth is we are all different. So just respect that and get on with life.
He´s absolutely right about that. In my contry a man got a "visit" by the police because he shared a meme about Robert Habeck. Its like we were in the DDR again
For a comedian in a comedic setting he is right. I work in a correctional center where bullying is rife and suicide kills many times more officers than inmates do. Very many time. The bullying is always cowardly dressed as humour, calling officers mah nigga, escribing female officers generically as vaginas, physically forcing a female officer face in close to theirs and speaking obscenities into her face. It is all dressed as humour and jokes so that they can blame the victim. I am in NSW Australia and in over two hundred years inmates have killed 10 officers mostly during escape attempts, our suicide rate is probably about once per month. I enjoyed Rowan's police joke when it was first aired and tv series such as love thy neighbour. Context is everything, change the context and the joke becomes the insult.
Did you know that he got demonized for saying publicly that electric cars were fine but that there was nothing green about them? He holds a Master's degree in Electrical engineering.
Rowan does not specifically destroy woke culture. This is at best a crude interpretation of his words. He sounds very much like the voice of reason to me.
I wholeheartedly agree with Rowan Atkinson, and often wonder what today’s ‘woke’ brigade would make of Alf Garnet. This was brilliant clever comedy. We brits have long had a reputation for being good at laughing at ourselves and rather than now suppress this as we’re now expected to do, we should be allowed to teach others to adopt the same approach. Then no one would be able to claim offence. I’m appalled at the emergence of what has been labelled “The thought police” in the media reports of their visits to peoples homes. It is obvious from the reports that they are not comfortable doing what they’re doing but are compelled from the highest authority. Very frustrating and stressful for the individual officers. What started out as a dictat of good intent has quickly degenerated into a serious threat to free speech, and I’m reminded of what takes place in Russia and other countries. I never thought we would see this in Britain. To quote the French philosopher Voltaire “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” This has served humans well for a long time and I’m appalled that we’re now threatened with punishment for following its message.
I think the perspective here is that if you ‘allow’ words to hurt you they will. Don’t let them be discerning question and then decide if there is truth in it That is intelligence it is also self protective
Most people don't know this about Rowan, but he is a very intelligent man. His IQ is in the upper 170's. This video definitely shows that side of him and I love it! ❤️
If I’m offended by something or someone I will either, talk about it, disengage from that idea or someone, confront if possible and discuss or just walk away. You can’t live in a world with billions of people and expect to agree with even a million. We are not obliged to listen to ideas we do not like. We are creating a highly triggered society incapable of tolerating competing thoughts.
I'm 31 years old and I believe in racial comedy. Like Archie Bunker or Richard Pryor and Carol Burnett. People need to see that comedy. Watch Blazing Saddles because it's funny.
There's no way Blazing Saddles would be made today. I went to the theatre twice to see the original and laughed my butt off both times. I've seen it since on the telly and they took out all the funny parts. It's a mere shadow of the movie it once was.
The sad part of all this is the realisation that our society is in such dire straits, that stating the obvious makes one some sort of revolutionary. What a pathetic world we have become!
I fully agree with him. People can find literally anything offensive, and I think it's ludicrous to bow to every single claim of someone being offended. Sure, there are limits to everything, but I believe that in the majority of cases those limits are still miles and miles away. I don't think this issue has anything to do with 'woke' culture specifically, though. They're easy to make fun of, yeah, but the 'anti-woke' people are often just as ridiculous in what offends them. Whether it's out of wokeness or just pearl-clutching, it all comes down to people calling for censorship and punishment of trivialities, and I think the moment society bends to those demands, everyone will be worse off for it.
I have always enjoyed this mans comedy genius throughout the years. Now Mr. Atkinson stands up to the world as a guardian for free speak, as well as common sense. This video should be required to be televised each and every month. My belief is that few would bother to listen, as it seems to me that even fewer individuals are concerned that we are loosing our freedoms of critical thinking, and freedom to express ourselves.
A man with many skills. Not least his racing career. I remember him racing: In the UK GT Turbo Cup under the number 50. A Renault 5 GT Turbo. In a short time, the fastest hot hatch.
You are Great Rowan!! I think that we need more comediants that can shake the "correct politics" which generally not quite correct"". I enjoy very much his , he is true, ingenious and dangerous as an arrow.
If you don't own the head the words came from, you will never know the true intent that person had in mind when uttering them. You may have a good idea about what? But you'll never know the the whole truth of it. Secondly it is the other head that takers offense. It is their responsibility because it was their judgement call to make it so. Be careful about what you think, you might just be wrong? AND it gives insights into your mind. And the type of person YOU ARE! 😵💫
SIR Rowan Atkinson is a global treasure and I love absolutely everything he has ever done or been in. Listen to this man for he is a font of humility, hilarity and humbleness. :P
Nasty clickbait title and thumbnail. This speech (a very good one i must add) is over 10 years old, it has nothing to do with woke, its about freedom of speech.
Well said. People are way too sensitive these days. I got into trouble even for laughing because I found it amusing when i overheard a conversation and was told that the person got offended and they want me to stay away from this person - so ridiculous!
As nonbinary person, i think you can say anything. But also respect if someone says that "hey i would like if you don't say this to me", and im talking about face to face converstations. Boundries are okey to make, but cancel culture is just weird.

He is right. If we are afraid of what people say, shutting them up does not complete the argument. Only by engaging with those arguments can we truly start to enable an argument we believe is better. And being offended does not mean we are right. Nor does being offended cost us life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness. It just means we are challenged as we should be, every time we voice an opinion.
This is such an insightful and well put together video. EXCEPT THE TITLE. Nobody on the far left, who is considered woke, is going to see this title and go: HMMM I WANNA WATCH THAT. No they are going to look away and they need to see this video the most.

@9:22 The strongest weapon against gun violence isn't gun control, but more guns! Everyone is for "free speech" but few of those people seem to be for self defense so I figured I'd turn the phrase and piss everyone off.
I like u tried to argue but the point u raise doesn't match what he is saying. He is talking free speech and not about mechanical weapons both of them are two different things and must be handled different. With free speech many people misunderstand that it means u can spread hate speech and don't get punished no it's not first ammendment doesn't allow free speech to spread hate or give violent speech regarding racism, targeting ethinic groups or such sorts. (I know it's rather a complex issue to sort it out) But what he u are saying is mechanical weapons that can instantly decide people's lives!! Guns in my personally opinion for a long time in USA has caused more unwanted deaths then protect people...and one might as well have to look at result in the broader perspective to understand if something has been useful or has harmed human lives more. His methodology although is debatable but that is one of the thing he is asking for bring in more objective debates rather than punishing people directly just bcs one is offended by it
@@anonymous891 I didn't properly enumerate the relationship between the 1st amendment (free speech) and the 2nd amendment (the right to keep and bare arms). You can't have one without the other. Witness Brittan right now where the government is arresting people for non-violent posts online. Further, please look up some firearms usage stats in the United States. Firearms are used legally far more often to defend people, than to take lives illegally...the numbers aren't even close. So yes, civilian ownership of guns is a net positive in maintaining lives and freedom in the United States.
Im Liberal i dont believe in this shit many of us dont. Its the Authoritarians who have taken over and made things woke. They tried controlling issues on the right side and now they moved over to ourside and have been hiding behind our progessive ideas and made them regressive.
100%. The issue with trying to outlaw offense is that it doesn't fix the issue, it just moves the issue behind closed doors. Prohibition did not decrease the use of alcohol, it just hid it, and allowed it to empower criminals. When "haters" are free to express their views and openly confronted by the majority, they are known, and their victims see the support around them. When you try to make hate a crime, it still circulates, in dark echo chambers, until it explodes, often with deadly consequences.
Banning anything never solved anything, but particularly banning words-speech. That is totalitarian behaviour and it won't work or make anything better, just worse.
There are some comedians that I find awful because of the way they constantly pick negatively on certain groups including myself, old, fat, and at times doddery. But I love my life. If those comedians want to pick on me then that is their right as Rowan says. My incredibly intelligent parents taught me that openly responding to those who taunt you is giving them what they want. They want you to be upset. Don’t give them that power and satisfaction of thinking that they have affected you. No one can hurt you emotionally unless you allow them to. If you are insulted, it is your choice to view what is said is insulting or not. Take a wider view, if this person thinks it is funny to insult others then maybe they should be pitied. Move on in your own life.
I love mr Atkinson and agree with all he says. Just something that I want to point out as having being there at the time, the guy didn’t get arrested for calling a police horse gay. I see it come up often and with most stories there is a lot more too it but I guess no one is really interested in the truth when the story is so bizarre

An older speech of Rowan Atkinson, but it can´t be repeated enough. My greatest respect for you, Sir Rowan Atkinson!
There is one thing I was taught as a kid: "Put yourself in the other person's shoes before you act." It's a kind of empathy that I think is something that should be more apparent these days, but alas, the opposite is the case.
In the old video of Sir Rowan's free speech lecture, the sign above his head reading: Feel Free To Insult Me, always makes me smile. That's because I'd love to see someone trying to do so. :)
The input from the person behind the scenes, parroting what Atkinson said almost verbatim, was invaluable. It’s like I was watching a video and reading the comments at the same time.

But just because something may be funny doesn't mean it's tolerable.
Because something is offensive, the offence is in the eyes of the offended
@gabrielv.4358 You don't need to be the target of the offence to be offended tho, because all eyes can see it's offensive.

"Woke" is just another religion to him.

because we have, in these past 70 years, in fact discovered that constant exposure to certain (groups of) words actually DOES have lasting effects, and we might have to mind what we say to people a bit more.
Bullying, be it verbal or physical, is still incredibly common and fuck all has been done about it. If that makes you feel better.
What a REAL gentleman he is!

An amazing man. Have had the pleasure of watching Rowan from the start of his career and can just watch him again & again. Well spoken Sir 👏🏼
Rowan can't sound more based, really. Love the man, and his comedy.
Racism and antisemitism should always be unacceptable
@@eltwarg6388 I'd want to know as well. I don't think we'll ever get an answer...
It's a nice video. My only problem is, why do we hear a summary of what the guy said right after we listen to him say it? :D
I respect not only his humour and talent but also his strong principle and willingness to speak up honestly
This kind of true intellectuality is almost lost to the previous generations. His words are a soothing balm in a world of woke madness. ❤❤❤❤❤
Agree 100% freedom of speech 😸
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
That saying really has turned out to be wrong!
I agree. Just ignore, LOL!
I think the perspective here is that if you ‘allow’ words to hurt you they will. Don’t let them be discerning question and then decide if there is truth in it

If I’m offended by something or someone I will either, talk about it, disengage from that idea or someone, confront if possible and discuss or just walk away. You can’t live in a world with billions of people and expect to agree with even a million. We are not obliged to listen to ideas we do not like. There's no way Blazing Saddles would be made today. I went to the theatre twice to see the original and laughed my butt off both times. I've seen it since on the telly and they took out all the funny parts. It's a mere shadow of the movie it once was.
As a former citizen of GDR I experienced an officially limited speech.
So I agree 100% to R.Atkinson.
Indeed. It's remarkable how the people trying to "be offended" forget where this sort of censorship can lead.
1000% in agreement with Mr. Atkinson!

Ironiclly that's America's approach to guns.

Mindful and simultaneously fascinating
The most brilliant speech on free speech !

I am not a fan of Rowan Atkinson's comedic style, That is just my taste. He is 100% correct in everything he says, He has my full support and respect on these issues.
Loved his work for decades 😂❤
An older speech of Rowan Atkinson, but it can´t be repeated enough. When I was a child and I watched Mr. Bean, I couldn´t imagine that one day we would have to fight for free speech and even less that Mr. Bean would be one of the bravest fighters in this war.
My greatest respect for you, Sir Rowan Atkinson!
There is one thing I was taught as a kid: "Put yourself in the other person's shoes before you act."
It's a kind of empathy that I think is something that should be more apparent these days, but alas, the opposite is the case.
I love this man! I have since I was a young man and I will continue to do so as long as he stands his ground and keeps his moral standard, something we all need to stand behind! Mr. Atkinson is a hero and everyone should recognize this!
