Paul’s interviews are really good, early songs like “Flowers Never Bend” and “For Emily……..” sound as beautiful as ever, and he’s always on a quest to learn more, like he said about playing guitar, “It’s a universe!” The real deal.
I love it when he says: "I am a good guitar-player, but..." It's not a brag, or even a humble brag; it's a statement of fact which leads to the point he is about to make.
What an outstanding interview. I always had Paul as the number one guy I wanted to hear Howard interview, with trepidation that they wouldn't jive. So glad this exists.
What a treat. Paul Simon's most recent release, Seven Psalms, prominently features his acoustic guitar. It is as if he went back to his musical roots and combined them with decades of experience. The songwriting is very sophisticated, and a delight for fan's of Paul's guitar playing.
His playing is what got me playing the guitar. I learned fingerpicking also playing his songs. Though, the Travis picking method I actually learned from Dust in the Wind... lol.
Me too, back in the 70s. The Boxer...one of my absolute favorites. Still in my performing lineups, and I've always said, if I ever get a boxer, I'd name him Paul Simon!
He's very right about the guitar. I also get uncomfortable or bothered if I go more than a day without picking it up. Although I feel like I need to do legato and alternate picking exercises every day to keep my chops and finger constitution up to par. It is an endless love with no final destination.
Simon is an inspiration!! Writing great songs for almost 70 years!!! I sing “ St Judy’s Comet “ to my grandkids when they stay overnight! When I would hear he had a new album, I didn’t have to hear it. I knew there would be great music on it! God bless him!!
I too picked up the guitar at Bar-Mitzvah age. My early teachers always told me that I had a natural knack with fingerstyle. Always loved Paul's playing.
How I understand Paul 'bout the need of playing guitar every day. I am just a 70 years old amateur guitar player and every morning after my breakfast I have to pick the guitar and try to write something even if the words don't come easily. God bless Paul.❤
Always loved Paul's music, and guitar playing, and appreciate his skills. But he did learn A LOT when he came to England, and hung around with the English Folk artists of that time, Bert Jansch etc, and he took a lot from their styles and added it to his own.
I have always admired Paul as an acoustic guitarist. I don't think I'd be writing folk songs today if it wasn't for Simon and Garfunkel. Maybe they didn't get along, but they recorded incredible music together.
I was introduced to Travis picking from Lindsay Buckingham, both in Fleetwood Mac and solo. I had been listening to the style in Simon's work and not really realizing it for year before though!
Lindsey is another underrated guitar player, that term gets tossed around too often but in some cases it actually fits,he incorporates Banjo and Travis picking which are similar but not the same.
Love hearing the guitar fingerpicking story from Paul. Howard asks some great questions. Couple of great fingerpicking acoustic players are Michael Johnson and Martin Simpson!

This was by far the best Stern interview in years.
This was so moving. Playing the guitar is like speaking or maybe even breathing to Paul. So much knowledge is given here. Love it
Thanks million Mr.Stern...❤
Paul’s interviews are really good, early songs like “Flowers Never Bend” and “For Emily……..” sound as beautiful as ever, and he’s always on a quest to learn more, like he said about playing guitar, “It’s a universe!” The real deal.
Thank you Paul Simon for your music and Graceland in particular! You saved me in times I felt scared. You are a legend.
That's who I learned fingerpicking from. He was a real hero to me. America and The Boxer are still two of my favorite songs ever.
I love it when he says: "I am a good guitar-player, but..." It's not a brag, or even a humble brag; it's a statement of fact which leads to the point he is about to make.
That was beautiful. It's great to see his love for playing is still strong.
Paul Simon is a global treasure 😀🎸🎶❤️
“The guitar is like a universe” was a beautiful thing to say
His Martin was simply gorgeous.

What an outstanding interview. I always had Paul as the number one guy I wanted to hear Howard interview, with trepidation that they wouldn't jive. So glad this exists.
A national treasure. I had the incredible honor of shaking his hands once after a Paul McCartney concert at MSG in 1989.
His hands-plural? Did you shake both of them?
Love the new thing he played at the end, those are beautiful chords.

Most direct, succinct explanation of the Travis pick that I've ever heard. A distillation to the essence of what it is.
I learned fingerpicking in the 80s playing his songs. Still play them today. Timeless masterpieces.

I too picked up the guitar at Bar-Mitzvah age. My early teachers always told me that I had a natural knack with fingerstyle. Always loved Paul's playing.
Very interesting! Paul Simon has just broadened my horizons! Thanks Mr. Simon!
while i listened to the entire interview i wasn't as captivated as i am watching it .. nice job
Yup. That's all there is to it. Infinite possibilities from one technique. Love it.
Amazing talent. Love the demonstration and the artist.💐
Thanks Paul. Been following you since Graceland when I was 12
When he talks about comfort, that really hit home for me. I feel uncomfortable without my guitar. It's a very special feeling.
It all goes back to Travis picking… such a guitar magician.
...at 81! tooo good...cheers Paul.
Paul Simon's unique guitar playing is always music to my ears--like Ray Manzarek's keyboards still are.
So true!
Magical musical genius, so lucky to have him❤
Everything about this was magic.

Paul Simon 72’ album is a total masterpiece. Some of his best deep cuts
I have a lot of love for this

One of the Greatest Singer Songwriters EVER !
Always loved Paul's music, and guitar playing, and appreciate his skills.
But he did learn A LOT when he came to England, and hung around with the English Folk artists of that time, Bert Jansch etc, and he took a lot from their styles and added it to his own.
In particular Bert’s version of Davy Graham’s Anji
Criminally underrated guitar player.
Explain why...
Underrated?!? Paul Simon?!? What???
Nobody underrates Paul Simon, nobody.
I know what you mean, but Paul Simon is anything but underrated.

Great musical sense & inspiration, thanks brother, God Bless !!!
Love hearing the guitar fingerpicking story from Paul. Howard asks some great questions. Couple of great fingerpicking acoustic players are Michael Johnson and Martin Simpson!
Check out Doyle Dykes some time. Chet Atkins once said Doyle is the best fingerstyle player out there at that time. He's incredible.
Best is Tommy Emmanuel by a longggg way.
Paul Simon is unrivaled
Howard’s youtube posts have the best commercials
Very instructive ! Thanks
Paul Simon stood on the shoulders of roots music giants and became the giant on whose shoulders so many modern musicians can stand.
Loved those few seconds of "The Boxer" improv. Sweet.
Paul's guitar is very beautiful and fun to play.
Great stuff
An American treasure
It is great to know that PS is still motivated and inspired by the guitar.

Just got into fingerstyle and the boxer was the second song I learned. I haven’t been this addicted to a hobby in a long time!
