@@getsumcashYou're wrong... Have you read the books at least? He killed the king because he knew that the king wanted to blow up the kingdom thinking he'd turn into a dragon. Thus Jamie killed the king and he couldn't tell Ned Stark since Ned Stark doesn't care and only believes in duty and thus he couldn't reveal that he killed him due to such circumstances and took the downfall, essentially loosing what he wished for and that is being remembered by the people as an honest, honorable knight. He then realized he has nothing good written about him in the book about kings guard except for him killing a king. When he loses his hand that ties him to that and losing favor with his sister, he completely abandons his old self and tries to do as much good for the people to be remembered as someone good.

Just for the sake of Cersei, their favorite character, they simply love Cersei. A character nobody likes, unlike Joffrey or Ramsay who were amazing villains and people loved to hate. She is boring, badly acted, because Lena Headey simply wasn't capable of portraying the Cersei of the books: beautiful, beloved because of her looks, but batshit crazy, arrogant beyond belief. Not stupid per say, because all Lannisters are smart, but completely uneducated so acting dumb all the time.... instead we got a robot. Let me say it, which one of the writers is banging Lena???? I can't explain it any other way

I think that khaleesi has changed her mind because missandei's death, the death of her dragon, and the "claim" of Jon for being a Targaryen.
She goes crazy, that is unexpected, and we all know how does this in every end-season.
This is game of thrones, is not a regular tv show, if daenerys was going to take the throne so easily, it will be a highly expected ending.

thats my problem with it mostly was the plot armor for arya were i feel no fear for her character as a dragon is actively burning all around her and for one of the first times in the show i have no sense she could die she became a generic action hero

Arya went from being an A character to a central in literally 3 episodes, while characters like Danny and Jon, who have been the viewers center focus for 7 seasons have become what? B characters? Hell, jon straight up really does look like an extra or just some random character that was added this season in some episodes. They've decided out of nowhere that Arya would be the pivotal character to EVERY big plot in s8, while 7 seasons told us otherwise

The pacing of this season is my main critique. I actually can envision Dany becoming crazed with grief and rage at the loss of all her advisors and loved ones. But can you do that in basically an episode and a half? I doubt it
This is my same issue with the season. And because it was rushed, to me, *spoilers* the deaths of Jorah and Missandei (especially hers) were nothing but events to ~catalyze~ Dany's road to derangement, making their deaths almost seem cheap. Even Aerys's descent to madness took time. I wasn't expecting much but I was still disappointed.

Same! I don't have an issue with ending being the way it is but there was zero buildup! There should've been at least another episode between this one and the one before to show her descent to madness. Like that's 20 min of screentime so we can know what she's going through.

It was poetic justice. In the end, it all came crashing down on Cersei, and also Jaime for his one flaw; his unfiltered love for Cersei. Nothing was going to fix who Jaime is/was inside. It isn't like Jaime went and massacred innocent people, he didn't turn evil, but returned to his toxic relationship. In the end he was redeemed by the good he did in the later seasons. All my opinion though.
Danerys was the queen who didn't agree to conduct fighting pits, even if they were meant for peace and harmony because she thought it was cruel culture. From that character to character which killed most innocent people, only next to thanos in just an episode. Wtf man? At least thanos had some logic to kill people.
She risked everything to save innocents in episode 3, then suddenly decided to butcher innocents in episode 5.
I could understand if she had accidentally killed a bunch of civilians whilst trying to get to Cersei. But to target all those vulnerable men, women and children? I don't buy it at all. Even her own soldiers could have been victims, since she was burning everything without paying much attention.
Yeahhhhh right, she didn't just make her way till westeros by burning people alive who rejected to follow her or bend the knee. She was Mother Teresa the entire show. 😒 Stop complaining, she has always been an impulsive psychopath who was kept under control by her advisor's.

Absolutely. Although I think she was a bad leader from day one, her character arch was just totally destroyed by being so illogical. Her demon should've more been when her fantasy of being queen came face to face with her idealism and she had to choose either to become queen with blood on her hands or walk away from it all.

For one, it would have being very predictable, because he was the one character that spent the episode prior to the battle against the Night King making amends with EVERYONE he ever met in his life. Had it happened that day, I would have groaned a little saying "Really?" would be involved.
But then, again, given how his character assass... ahem, I mean, given how his death actually went? Yep, totally agree, it would have bem REALLY a lot better if he died that day.
If there is a thing this show is teaching us, it is that "subverting expectations" doesn't really amount to anything if done just for the sake of it.

This is the difference between CHARACTER-DRIVEN stories vs STORY-DRIVEN stories. GOT began as an unpredictable character-driven thing that remained unpredictable as long as it stayed character driven. Last season, we were very suddenly jolted into a story-driven tale that can't wait for its characters to fit the plot. It's jarring, to say the least. It's mildly insulting to the viewer's intelligence. I'm annoyed but still watching.
That's the best analysis I've heard of the situation. Although I must say...I think the characters were already falling apart, but some characters like Jon and Jaime and Bron where still good but even their characters where ruined. What a huge letdown of a series... gonna go down in history as biggest bust of a show in this generation of tv
So basically.., the plot is decent but the characters are shit, and since the characters are shit the plot falls apart too, but if it was the other way around it wouldn't work because characters matter more than plot?.
The problem is that GRRM's story was growing way too big and complex to the point where he can't figure out how to finish things or how to get to his desired ending for various plot points and character arcs without doing exactly what you said the show has done. It's a major problem that gardener style writers end up facing, their characters feel great but the plot tends to unravel towards the end leading to a weak ending while architect style plot driven stories may not have characters that are as fully realised but the plot is more tightly focused and characters actually fit the plot even if they aren't as well developed.
Of course a story that decides to do both ends up being a hot mess, like you said, but I still think that the fact that GRRM hasn't completed any more ASOIAF books in the last 10 years is a major clue to him having run into the problem I mentioned above.
Sums up the issues quite nicely. And that’s precisely what made Breaking Bad the masterpiece that it is; it stayed character driven all the way to the end. It’s a shame that GoT devolved into a plot driven story. Ah well, at least the acting, cinematography, and set-pieces are great.
I felt they rushed it too soon, there was room for another season.
I feel like we’re watching bad fan fic at this point.

True. Although, in all honesty, at least fanfiction writers have the decency of including a disclaimer/warning advising readers if the fanfic's shows OOC (out of character) storylines. HBO didn't do such thing... 🙈🙊🙉
The Northern arc will be completely different, willing to bet a lot on it. In King's Landing, well... yeah, she probably goes in blazing. Will she be a villain in the books because of this? Not necessarily. Even if she goes mad... there are very few hints now, it will be done with a lot more subtlety. Damn D&D. I hope this destroys their careers but it won't

I’m guessing Stannis suddenly deciding to kill Sheeren makes so much sense now, it was foreshadowing how they would destroy other character arcs in the future
I think he's another example of what GRRM intended clashing with D&D wanting to rush the show with their preferred vision. Stannis capturing Winterfell then being besieged later by the Walkers and facing the choice of sacrificing his Nissa Nissa (Shireen) or having humanity destroyed by the Walkers is a fitting scenario and challenge for Stannis. Does he choose Duty over Love or Honour, Stannis is the one character who just might choose Duty over the one thing he loves most in the world, the clash between choosing to kill an innocent child who he is actually attached to and choosing to doom all of humanity is actually compelling when in the hands of a character like Stannis who actually takes Duty seriously rather than just pretending to do so.

I believe season 8 is lacking just as much as the next guy, but Jaime never killed the mad king to save the innocents. Ned Stark hints at this in season one when he basically accuses Jaime of only killing the mad king when his power started to threaten the Lannister‘s

Trevor Loomis I’m pretty sure he did, at least from what I remember. The bath scene with Brienne he tells her about him killing the Mad King and says something like “If your precious Renly told you to kill your own father and stand by while thousands of innocents die, would you have kept your oath then?” The point was that everyone, including Ned, didn’t know this and thought he just killed the mad king because he wanted the Lannister’s to rule, when in actuality, he did it to save the city. But the way season 8 is going, im surprised they didn’t rewrite this lol.

The dumbest thing is she has been a bad person from day one...they did ruin her character development , but if you remember her character from the first few seasons she was an egomaniac obsessed with power and being queen at all costs and her social justice stuff was always self referential to be some messiah figure, even if the results where bad she wanted to feel like she was saving people by becoming queen and stirring the pot....but she wasnt all bad ofcourse and was human, but her egocentric idealism was a recipe for disaster which I couldn't wait to see. An earnest dreamer who caused more trouble than good, even with 'good' intentions. Her character arch to evil wasnt supposed to be becoming possessed out of nowhere...terrible execution
Jon Snow was the better person and leader from day one. He was about realism and being guided by a code, not some divine right to throne by any means and free some slaves on the way to feel good
Arcos211 the books have forshadowed danys madness much better than the show did. Starting with her sack of Astapor which was super graphic and violent in the books compared to the show. Dany will go mad in the books it’ll simply be done more gradually and better

While I don't know if it was the same in the book, but in S1 Jaime told his father that it was when the mad king threatened to kill Tywin was when he made the decision to stab him in the back. So it was more out of protecting his family than anything else.

Jon started as a cardboard paladin, he still is a cardboard paladin. The most boring character in the show. In the books he is at least a bit arrogant, have some resentments about being a bastard, etc.. (and he can warg on his wolf at night, very rad stuff). The show had some glimpses of this deeper personality in the very beginning, but it was super short. So, the character remains the same boring paladin who is all about honor and shit. I can take that from Sean motherfucking Bean because the guy is a great actor and he was a dumb paladin for just 1 season. But this kind of stereotype for 8 goddamn seasons? Give me a break... Jon should remain dead. In fact, if GRRM resurrects him in the winds of winter book, I will drop it right there. I am sick and tired of this trope, goddamn martyrs are being used by religions and old legends since forever, literally thousands of years of repetition.

From my perspective I understood that she judged that the only way to prevent the damage done through the Varys' letters of continual insurrection against her, not to mention the North supporting Jon, would be leaving everyone too terrified to oppose Daenerys. It makes total sense in the mentality of the Middle Ages and I believe it still does nowadays. Tywin Lannister himself completely annihilated the house of the Lord of Castamere and his people so that everyone would fear the Lannister house. The message is clear: Oppose me and I will not only destroy you but all your people.

Its not that most people have a problem with Daenerys' turn as the "mad queen", who kills the innocent indiscriminately. It is that the turn was unearned and too abrupt. You don't ever see the gradual erosion of either her sanity or her moral code. It is a narrative non sequitur. It simply does not logically follow that if Daenerys shows no mercy to villainous rulers, slavers, soldiers, and their acolytes, then therefore it is only small step to extend her penchant for violence to the deliberate targeting and slaughter of noncombatant men, women, and children. There is vast chasm between those two behaviors that the writers never bridged. It would be like Batman, after a few tragedies in one issue of a comic book, going from simply killing criminals, to in the next issue of the comic book beating up the women and children who happened to live in the same neighborhood as the criminal. No comic book reader would buy it, just as the vast majority of critical viewers did not buy Daenerys' transformation.
I disagree. We've seen hints that she lost care for people even in S7. When it comes to the Throne she would take it no matter the cost. In S7 after the destruction of the Greyjoys fleet via Euron, she was seriously contemplating going and torching King's Landing. Daenerys always had some ruthlessness and coldness and slowly as seasons went by it stopped being towards criminals and more towards innocents.
One other thing, we could always see a similarity between characters and their beasts (like the stsrks and their direwolves) at least in my opinion (not 100% similarity but just some). Drogon burned that baby, a symbol of pure innocence and Dany couldnt control him. Now she burns innocents and the closest to her couldnt stop her. Whereas we've seen scenes of direwolves saving (with Sam) or helping out and not so much biting or harming innocents. Although i admit this thought process is a stretch.
Point being, the closer Dany got to the Throne the more ruthless she got. And u could see before she decided to burn the city she just is filled with anger about what the former King Bobby and Queen Cersei did in attempts to murder her. These mad targareryn inbred bastards can never control their anger anyway.
This isnt in response to you, but i find it funny that Jeff mentions Grey Worm killing innocents (wasnt it Lannister soldiers tho?) like that should be any surprise. These castrated killers are the coldest in the realm, their initation involves infanticide and that says enough (plus they killed Ms Sunday so i could see why hes so filled with anger)

And if you actually watch Episode 4, you'll see that a LOT of those scorpion bolts missed without a hell of a lot of effort to maneuver around them from Dany and Drogon. With the element of surprise, they could aim without her already firing on them. Without that element, they couldn't.

I really don't get why they stuck to the whole "13 episodes in the last two seasons" thing. After the rush job that was season 7 and the year break, you'd think they'd have the common sense to go back to 10 episodes. Then again, D&D have lacked common sense for a long time.
Why would you want more of this terrible writing? Even with only these six episodes they could have justified the characters actions better, but they chose to write the story like this! Time is not the issue, it's the writing.
