The multi-buys from superstore infuriate me as a single person. I don’t have the space or need for multiple products and shouldn’t have to pay more for a single item!
This is my pet peeve as well because I think they are just pushing for sales records at the expense of those on lower budgets. My argument is if they can sell 3 bags of chips for $1 each, why can’t they sell one for $1 instead of $1.49+ . It creates a false sense of savings for those that can afford to take advantage of those deals at the expense of those that can’t. It is a terrible marketing scheme but creates bigger sales records. To me it seems unethical.
You’re reinforcing how crucial it is to price shop and know your prices. So many people don’t do this and throw money out the window. Thank you for advocating what should be taught as basic budgeting in public schools in Nova Scotia and everywhere in Canada. You rock!
Thank you, Leslie. It really is crucial to KNOW YOUR PRICES. I mean, start with your top 10 items. Just know those prices. Then, consistently expand your knowledge.
Well sort of . I price shop as much as possible but I live in the country and only go to the city once a month . So the gas cost alone mitigates any benefit from price shopping .
@diannefitzmaurice9813 When you go to town is there just one store? Or when you get to town is there the possibility to get the best prices at each store?
Back in the 70s/80s there was a guy who would compare grocery store prices for about 30 common items at (I think) Safeway, IGA(back then), Superstore, Woodwards (when it existed) and publish the items in a the paper weekly. It helped my mom to determine where deals were located, and especially because she relied on coupons back then. I miss that service, so it was cool to see your video doing something similar
Wow! I live in Ontario (lovely to see a Canadian comparison!). I was shocked that Superstore was more expensive than Sobeys! I am also glad you compared the same brands in each store. I have heard so many people afraid to shop at Dollararama because it is a different brand than the grocery stores. Thank you!
I really appreciate the time and expensive to do this for us. Thank you so much! It makes my job easier, now I can shop at Dollarama and not worry about if I be losing money or not!!
Thanks. When I do something like this I have my list of items and when I head out for my regular grocery shopping, I complete the search and videos/photos very quickly. Like a little side quest at each location. Then at my leisure, I can process the footage and pictures and create the content.
Hi Melanie, thank you for all your research on prices here in Nova Scotia. You have taught me so much and I am now aware and am trying to shop the sales and clearance items in the grocery stores. Everyone should watch this channel and advise your loved ones to pay attention and save money. 😊❤🎉
Thank you for doing these price comparisons with the different stores. Here on the West Coast of Canada it's so ridiculous the cost of living is the worst out here. So many people don't have the time to do comparison shopping as the infrastructure here doesn't permit many shoppers to do this. So many folks moved to the suburbs and beyond years back, and now it almost doesn't make a difference, the cost of living is way too much here. People are exhausted after spending hours in congested rush hour traffic and they just get their shopping done and over with wherever and whenever they can. That was a wonderful presentation, thank you Melanie.
Just stumbled across your channel. First, you’re Canadian…yay! Second, you’re on the east coast…double yay!! And third, I’m thankful you took the time to do this and share!!!
@lucywaugh196 I'm going to include a couple links to some others you might find interesting. Both include Giant Tiger. ua-cam.com/video/LxX_R9T6HX8/v-deo.htmlsi=9HVY2D3-bBdo08Dv ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=tNSamxzFAJUr4RZf
Hi. I just found your channel and have subscribed. Finally some Canadian content I can look forward to. Thanks for doing what you do! God bless 🙏🏻 Watching from Saskatchewan.💖
Hi, born and raised in N.S. until I was 20 but have been in BC for 45 years... I try to get back home every year or two. For many years I was incensed how much my peeps in NS were being ripped off for milk and dairy items by more than $2 a gallon. I do the majority of shopping in my family and know my prices. I really enjoyed your comparisons and look forward to more!
This was awesome. Great experience to watch definitely awesome comparison. It goes to show that you need to shop several stores to get the best prices. This was awesome.I love this video
The quality of making things yourself is far better than anything you can get from a box or bottle. You can taylor the recipes to your liking. Even better to get started growing your own food maybe get a few chickens and make your own fresh pasta. Home made iced tea is super easy and cheap you can reduce the sugar and add things like spearmint which is an easy to grow herb or whatever you like. Great video.
Sorry but my urban apt. building isn't zoned for chickens nor does it provide tenants with garden plots, a spot to BBQ or even a lawn chair. Most _affordable_ (?) apts are so small there's no room to store large bags or sacks of anything and forget about space for a freezer :/
Yes except for the time and energy it takes to do all that ! Got to draw the line somewhere and our winters end up costing more for those chickens and eggs as well . Having your own garden -- well by the time you get someone to till it and pay for the pricey seeds not to mention the onslought of 5' high weeds makes it untenable and more costly than the farmers market . So it is about a balance . and besides I am too old for doing it all myself now just for myself .
@diannefitzmaurice9813 Having a friend with some unused land is the best thing ever....My friend agreeded to expand his small garden in his back yard......there arena handfull of us working together....we now have rabbits, an ever expanding garden (5' x 16' raised beds) and 10 3'x30' in ground beds.....yes it is a huge amount of work but the yeilds will only get larger over the next 5 years....we grew more than we can handle. There are hundreds of peppers that are going to feed the chickens and tons of greens to feed the rabbits and compost pile....start with even container gardening...people need to work together to grow food for each other......get it going.
@@milomilo55 I certainly understand spacing. We live in 650 square feet. We container gardened this year. Definitely learned what worked and what we wouldn't waste time on next year. We got enough cucumbers to make mustard pickles. Very exciting!
Dollarama I also substandard quality, I think! I bought Irish Spring Soap at Dollarama…it as not the same as the Irish Spring we usually buy…looked the same..packaged the same..but the product was NOT the same! And I have found that with many items…different quality..substandard quality..same packaging high.
Yeah, my experience is that a lot of products at Dollarama are inferior. Less fresh, expired, something's wrong with it. Last time I bought mac and cheese there, it was a month expired!
@@adventuresingroceryland Hi Melanie, thanks for the heads up. I'm watching the new video for the 2nd time. I'm amazed. No wonder Gaelen Weston is so wealthy. Thank you so much for doing this - now I will be able to cut my grocery bill by 40% or more ;-)
Thanks Melanie! I find it useful to do some homework checking prices, before shopping. Sobeys has Viola, Superstore has a good search engine on their main page and Walmart does as well for pricing but is there anything for Dollarama? Also wanted to mention that these days regular shelf prices change so drastically even week to week at times, it just makes the whole idea of finding best deals so complicated. They can't be counted on from one week to the next. Anyway I'll keep trying!
I use those online platforms to check prices as well. Nothing that I am aware of for Dollarama. I try to eyeball as much as I can when I'm in there. Although prices seem to fluctuate in big box depending on urban or rural location, I find Dollarama consistent no matter location.
I think dollarama does or did (few years ago)....but it was wildly inaccurate with what items I could find at my nearest locations and was mostly there to showcase seasonal or bulk purchases like american Dollar trees search. It seems to me, since the pandemic, that in a lot of grocery stores (including Dollarama) the prices on the shelves (or even online sometimes) don't keep up with the prices in the individual store's system. Im a fan of carrying a little notebook with me while shopping and jotting down the price of every item as I grab it, so I can either confidently dispute it at the register or have the price of my common purchases on hand for budgeting.
Ontario here. My local plaza has a relatively small "big box" grocery store as well as a $Store. About two years ago I started each trip at Dollarama and finished at Metro. As the bulk of my shopping was NOT at Dollarama the savings per trip was insignificant, but I kept at it. At some point during that time, it was worth going for the savings in cereal alone!! No extra gas expense, no extra traffic/parking headaches -- just great value for a few more steps!
Thank you so much Melanie for this very informative video. I live in Cape Breton Island, NS. I work with our schools and alot of our families struggle with money for food allocation. Thank you again, Sylvia MacDonald xo
Thank you! and as I live in Wilmot, you shopped at the exact same stores that I use. Very interesting. I do get my bread (Country Harvest) from Giant Tiger because they are $2.75 or $3.00 a loaf and they have a bigger selection of kinds, e.g. Ancient Grains, 14 Grains, Everything etc. So important to shop around and price check.
I live in BC, and I always check prices, but there are certain things I need that I can only get at certain stores. I have to go to 3 different stores just to be able to get everything I need. I hate shopping, so having to do that is very frustrating
I enjoyed this. When I first went down to comment I saw somebody had pushed something about it's that's all the c*** you're going to buy and eat and whatever whatever and then it disappeared so I'm assuming you deleted. I guess they were not too swift in realizing that you had to pick items that would be at all of the stores to do the comparison. You did a great job.
@stephanieinglett8569 I never delete comments, even bad ones. They must have re-thought it. Yes. I started with more items and the list got whittled down. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's supposed to be eye opening. The moral of the story, shop around and buy your items where they are the cheapest! Thanks for watching.
@maritimegirl3612 I did a comparison a couple weeks ago that included Giant Tiger. You may find it interesting. ua-cam.com/video/dYtH2cwhwCk/v-deo.htmlsi=9pYYUd3jFK3P0M4l
Here is a newer video, including Giant Tiger. It focuses on cleaning supplies and household items. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Would have liked to have seen No Frills on your list of stores. I was missing same when they did the price comparison shopping on market place. Great job anyhow!
I think there is only one No Frills store in Nova Scotia unfortunately . We are so lucky in Ontario to have No Frills and Food Basic stores . The Maritimes are unfortunately paying outrageous prices for groceries . I spend 6 months in each province every yr . It’s sad for young families
@@kathryndockrey1477 Baking Soda store brand at Walmart, cheaper ($1.27) compared to Arm & Hammer Dollarama $1.75. And white cake mix I actually think might have been mispriced at Walmart ($1.97 or 3 for $6) compared to Dollarama $2.
I had to pause the video on the hot chocolate. We used to buy these for stocking stuffers at Sobeys . I thought one box had 8 sachets. Now it’s 7. I would have to buy 2 boxes now instead of 1. Shrinkflation strikes again. What a huge difference between Sobeys and the Dollarama on that item.
Good job, Melanie! I saw a news item where the grams of things might be different on different items so you also have to look at the price per gram. Did you notice any differences in package sizes other than the apple sauce? The price per cup is lower on the apple sauce at Dollarama but not sure about grams on things. I’m curious if there’s any difference other than Nestea. I’ll be getting my rice at Dollarama!
@tenthousanddaysofgratitude Fruit Roll Ups - same product/same size Harvest Crunch - same product same size Hot Chocolate - same product, Walmart didn't have any fancy flavours, so the picture I took of the non fancy ones had 3 more packets (but that would be the same if non fancy options were chosen at the other stores) Baking Soda - Sobeys/Superstore/Dollarama same product and size (500g) but Walmart was store brand and slightly smaller (454g) Hellmans Mayo - same product and size Kraft salad dressing - same product and size Cake Mix - same product and size Fast n Fancy rice - same product and size White rice - different brands but the same size Pasta Sauce - Same product and size Tuna - different brands, Superstore/Sobeys/Walmart same size 170g and Dollarama 130g Chef Boyardee - same product and size Wraps - different products but same size/quantity Nestea - same product and size at Sobeys/Walmart/Dollarama (not carried at Superstore) So most items are the exact same product and/or different brand but the same size.
@@adventuresingroceryland that’s excellent! I saw an old news item on cbc I think, where they were not the same size. I will be looking at my Dollarama for food, more. I already buy a lot of things there, so will look at food items too!
@WaiferThyme Thanks for watching. I'm occasionally in the Bayers Lake area. I like that Costco, Walmart, Superstore, Giant Tiger, Dollarama, and Bulk Barn are all together in a cluster. Makes store hopping very easy!
Groceries in the dollar style stores are priced very different in Australia compared to Canada. I've found that the Australian dollar store groceries are cheaper per package but are much smaller in volume, thus making their unit price by Kilo or litre much more expensive. Quite a few years ago, the Australian government introduced laws so that supermarkets had to list the unit price on the sales tag on the store shelf, to make comparisons easier. You can also find unit prices on apps and websites.
@vegemitegirl1971 It's definitely easier to compare when there is unit prices. Check out this other Dollarama comparison video where I did a unit comparison. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=hDX2VWecCnWrlf5O
I hope if you do another one that you will include Giant Tiger . I find I go there first and get most of my groceries and then go to the bigger ones if they don’t have what I am looking for . Dollar store are the greatest .
@markliebrock6246 This was focused on Dollarama, so limited to non-perishables. You might find this comparison I did a couple weeks ago interesting. ua-cam.com/video/LxX_R9T6HX8/v-deo.htmlsi=Y43YZjB5pRQOVxCS
Here is a comparison on cleaning supplies. I found it even more dramatic than the food video. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Wow. What a price difference! Like you say, it’s important to shop at various stores (if in close proximity to each other). Thanks for another great video. Have a super evening!
Thanks for the comparison. But it seems like every item you got at Sobeys were on sale. I wonder if they would fare as well if you bought them at regular price.
@604Jimmy No store would fare as well if the items were all regular price. I encourage price comparisons and shopping your regular items where you get the best price. Depending on the week, that could be at different locations.
All Grocery shops here in Australia do a Unit Price per 100 grams to make it easier to understand unit prices. We do have similar discount stores but often you get a bulk buy price too.
This is a per unit price comparison I completed on cleaning supplies and household items. You might find it interesting. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
@@adventuresingroceryland Interesting - it's all 100ml for liquids here. But often you look at bulk items you might see the smaller bottles cheaper. Listerine is great example - 1 litre or 500ml & I have bought 2 x 500ml & saved big dollars. I just refill the 1 litre bottle & it's no different.
My problem having worked with elderly folk for eight years and now being older myself is vegetables and fruits. I would like to buy lettuce, celery etc. if I do I throw out half. I’ve tried to get local grocers to cut the iceberg and celery in smaller portions for singles and older folk as well. I’ve even pointed out a $3.00 iceberg lettuce can be split into 2X $2.00. Also while shopping with and for these older folk we noticed the single serving soups were on the upper shelf’s out of reach and often sight of seniors. Greed period.
@susanyeadon6657 I'm an advocate for opportunities to share food. I wish there were local cooperatives where people could make arrangements to share items.
@@adventuresingroceryland Yes it's almost an essential, especially for senior couples or singles unless they want to eat a single type of food for an entire week. While I was caretaking 2 apt bldgs (retired last yr). I had several older single tenants that I'd shop for when I did my own weekly shop. Did that for a few years (started during Covid) and it worked well. We'd split up the bags of potatoes, apples, oranges, carrots, celery, etc. and I'd buy family-sized pkgs of ground beef, boxes of chicken legs, etc so we'd each have a little of a variety of things and less worries about things going bad.
Hi Melanie 👋😊 I got a KILLER deal 2 weeks ago: 5 boxes of Harvest Crunch granola, on for .50 cents a box!!! Short dated, not expired. Did I clear the shelf? You bet!😂 Took the last 5. 😉 Really enjoy your channel here in BC. Watch prices people! 😊
Our Dollarama prices are similar but superstore prices are higher. The cereal is double the price of Dollarama everywhere. I’ve started picking up what I can at Dollarama
Hey Anna. Here is an individual comparison breakdown but different products! Very eye opening. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Hi. Great comparison shopping. I know my prices and always comparison shop. I think the multi buys are ridiculous. I stopped shopping at Loblaws because of it. I find Costco beats everyone on overall shopping prices. Your Dollarama offers way more affordable products them ours up here in Eastern Ontario. Thanks for a great video. Enjoy your week.
@@Daleemichaud There are some everyday items I enjoy from Costco. I still find that you need to know your prices. For meat, I find grocery store sale prices beat Costco every time.
To start with; Dollarama apparently treats Eastern Canada better than Western Canada, as we can’t get half of those items in Alberta Dollarama Stores! Good to know!!! 😡 Sobey’s is easily one of the most expensive grocery chains in Canada, along with all Loblaws and Metro grocery chains. No wonder Walmart has become everyone’s go-to. I know people who wouldn’t have been caught dead in a Walmart five years ago, that are now going to Walmart before their Costco trip! Also think about discount green grocers that are a zoo to sift through, but have some good deals. With our influx of new citizens, many discount and bargain groceries are popping up everywhere!
@@adventuresingroceryland DollarTree in the States even has coolers of groceries. And their craft department takes up an entire section of the store. It’s so cool.
I was looking for a hardware item at dollarama and started compare pricing on grocery items in the store, I ended up buying some groceries as it was cheaper than other grocery stores. Think I'll be shopping there more often.
I got the big casa mendosa wraps 10pk for $2.50 last month. They had just come out of the freezer, and I was going to freeze them again so I only bought 4. I think I should have got more.
I love wraps and flat breads and most keep pretty well in the freezer. I stock up too whenever I find them on sale. Quesadillas are my go-to whenever I'm too tired to really cook lol.
Not dollarama but we hada bid score today. Local shop in Bridgewater sells Miscut Chicken. Sent Hubby in and he came out with a 2Kg meat bird for 7.00. It had one leg cut off badly but all parts were there. So- Cut down the back to make half a chicken to roast for dinner. Other half made up 3 pieces for freezer and some bones and flesh for a broth. Half chicken (big) will be 2 meals for 2, 1.5 meals for 2 from the extra in the freezer , plus a big pot of broth. Not bad for $7,00, You can probably get some miscuts in the Valley from Eden Valley.
No. I didnt really feel the need. The majority of the items (8) were identical, 2 items were different brands but same size, leaving only 4 items with slight differences...see below. @@adventuresingrocerylandthank you for the detailed explanation. I am always shocked when people just look at the price of items and don’t look at the quantity involved
as a single person who lives alone i find it extremely hard to find good deals. the "deals" i see are for families with kids, and i get that, but i hate wasting food. For example Walmart had a great deal on a 10LB bag of potatoes for $1.89 last week, now I'm never going to eat 10LB myself in a week, the 5LB bag was $4.49, but still I'm not eating 5LB a week, so i end up buying two 1.5Lbs bag of potatoes for the week, with each 1.5LB bag costing $3.49/ea. and this goes with lots of other deals as well, i could save a lot more money and have more food in the house, but come day 7 i would be throwing out all the perishables, its such a waste, so i have to spend more to accommodate my lifestyle.
OK. I specifically looked for this in the next comparison I completed on cleaning supplies. There were several items that were smaller. The big eye opener was that the price point was so much smaller that even with smaller quantities, the per unit price at Dollarama was still cheaper. You might like this video. I did a per unit comparison after each item. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Dollarama has and always will be the more affordable option. However the PR behind them is that their products are either stale or past BB Dates. Which is not true at all. Some small dollar store chains like great canadian dollar store do indeed sell old stock. Dollarama sells direct from select manufacturers and their products are the exact same as anywhere else.
I have always price compared. I am fortunate that I live within 7minutes of all these stores including Costco, Giant Tiger, a great produce store and a liquidation center that has some good food bargains ie kraft Pizza Mix $5. All that is required is a flyer and a bit of time for the lineups.
I appreciate the effort you put into this comparison for two reasons: the pricing differences and how that difference can put people on the fast track to becoming type two diabetic. Eating inexpensively may be the best option based on budget, but everyone has to consider their health budget as well. Sugar and starch are carbohydrates and too much of these is dangerous. Would you be willing to do a comparison the same as in this example, but based of low carb items? Even if you don't want to entertain low carb diets, many do, and if you don't already know about carbohydrates and the effect on us, maybe you have another topic to research. Then there is ultra processed food...
I find all price comparisons interesting. This just happened to be with Dollarama as one of the stores, which limits the options. You might find this comparison from several weeks ago interesting. Eggs, yogurt, sausages, cheese, butter, pickles, flour, bread, frozen peas, macaroni noodles. I'll share the link. The comparisons hopefully provoke consumer thought on shopping around for the items they purchase regularly. Knowing prices and what are good deals is key to maximizing any budget. Why pay $10 for something when the store next door sells that item for $5. ua-cam.com/video/LxX_R9T6HX8/v-deo.htmlsi=cANAFuYYPPng4PhD
But everything is a carb ... unless it's a fat or a protein...including whole grains, fresh veggies, legumes etc. and carbs are where we get our fibre, our energy and many/most of our vitamins and micronutrients from so they're not, as a category, bad. The processing of foods ...all categories ..and excesses in any category is what lead to problems. Dietetics, food science and/or therapeutic nutrition aren't topics that can be learned in a week, or even a year, but I'd agree that researching human physiology and food science is never a bad thing.
Here is a different style of Dollarama comparison that doesn't touch on foods. Household Items and cleaners. Just as shocking. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Hi .😊..Edmontonian here..with regard to the difference in the products at the Dollarama..I shop at just 3 or 4 of the many Dollaramas in Edmonton and find that neither one of them carry the same brands of products, and usually have to go to hunt at a different Dollarama for certain items one or the other hasn't got..but regardless still enjoy the trip to get out and shop..😊
Some of those prices were sale prices at Sobeys and Superstore compared with regular price at Dollarama. Should show a comparison of not sale price totals and it REALLY drives the point home. Sobeys and Superstore regular prices are out of control. I only buy their loss leaders there now.
I shop the sales/price match and stock up so I never have to pay full price for an y thing. I can even beat the price for some of those Dollarama items, not that I use most. And what, iced tea crystals??? It's tea and sugar. Maybe some lemon juice 🍋 I am never without these basics. $5 for iced tea crystals isn't in my budget.
@Js20639 Yes. 170g vs 130g net weight or 120g vs 91g drained weight. Here is a different video comparing cleaning and household supplies. I break down the per gram/ml price after each set of items.
@LB20278 And yet, even with some Sobeys and Superstore items on sale, Walmart and Dollarama came out cheaper. I encourage store hopping. No matter the store, shop where your item is cheapest.

@@nealmacdonald8191Unfortunately, the one great value item in the comparison was because Walmart did jot carry the Arm & Hammer baking soda. I didn't choose it instead of Arm & Hammer, Arm & Hammer wasn't available.
I am also very aware that very small tight budgets cannot necessarily purchase the best value. Sometimes you just need to purchase the smaller size because the price point is what you can afford to allicate to that item, out of your budget.
Hi Nadine. Check out this comparison. I did compare sizes and added per unit comparison at the end of each item. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
Why didn't you have No Frills in on the list? That pricing doesn't always work, for example in our local mall, The Lancaster Mall in Saint John, NB, the anchor store is a Loblaw's No Frills, there is also a Dollarama and a non Supercenter Walmart. Because No Frills is the anchor store, they can dictate to Dollarama and Walmart what prices the can charge on the same items with No Frills being lower. To get better deals you'd have to travel other stand alone store and not have different chain store in the same mall or plaza. And as far as Saint John goes, the prices are higher than Moncton because all of the 4 stores she looked have their distribution warehouses in Moncton, so there is an added transportation fee to the rest of the province.
Store hopping? How much gas would you burn and time wasted to save a few cents. Make up your shopping list, then check the flyers and on-line for the best bargains. The only time I do store hopping is if they are situated on my direct route and I would pass them anyway.
@louwassenaar3774 In my location, I drive past all stores on my way to and from work. They are all very close together, some in the same parking lot! No extra gas. For me personally, the time is always worth it. The goal is to encourage price comparisons. Consumers can easily know the prices of their common purchases and discover where these items are the best buys. 😍
Yes, but in the big box stores, you gave to buy 3 or 4 of an item, to get a price reduction....I don't want or need 3 or 4...this is how the big stores force us to spend....if I want 1 item it costs me more!!!!
Check out this comparison video. Really seems to highlight those multiple buys in Walmart and Superstore. Not every item but almost. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
I wouldn't buy syrup there though, pancake syrup or whatever they call it, looks like pancake syrup. It's not made with sugar, it's sucralose, which is terrible for gut biome, kills off about half of it, and gut biome is an important part of the immune system. It's cheap, yeah, which is why I got fooled into buying one but then when I got home and was able to read the ingredients with a magnifying glass I found it was sucralose, or at least largely sucralose, can't really remember if there was some sugar but I don't think so, anyway I poured it down the sink, stuff is poison. Their jams are real sugar though, I buy them, about $2.50 instead of about $5.00 or more at Superstore.
@Chaz-x1i Hmm. Do you mean the sugar free Steeves? I think that is marketed specifically to consumers who need to be sugar free. I know that Sobeys and Superstore carry the same brand.
@@adventuresingrocerylandYeah I think that's it. I guess I didn't notice the "sugar free" on the label. I would advise diabetics or whatever to just not use syrup at all rather than use sucralose syrup. People can choose to use it if they want, of course, I just don't personally want to use it, after reading about the effects on biome. But the dollar store does have many good food products at reasonable prices, I like the breadsticks and the canned mandarin oranges, good for mixing with yogurt. BTW, have you noticed how pricey paper towel is now at Superstore? It's crazy how high the price is, the cheapest brand was $8 something for a 3 roll pack.
Your Dollarama has way more food products than any dollarama I’ve been to in my area of Ontario. I don’t think I can get even a quarter of the items you featured. Wonder why stores out east have better selection? 🤷♀️
It's good to hear you calling, 'Uncle Ben's' rice by its old name. I hope you are calling, 'Pearl Milling Company''s pan cake batter and syrup by the name, 'Aunt Jemima'. I stopped buying it when they participated in this foolishness. I will give Dollarama a wee look here in Ontario. Thank you.
@@adventuresingroceryland No, not at all. It's good on you to keep calling it by the original name. I can't stand it when 'woke' companies do these sorts of things. Aunt Jemima had the most beautiful complexion and Uncle Ben was a hunk...maybe...if you are a woman (I wouldn't know). 😁
Well in my books in Mb Walmart wins, because I don't buy processed foods and stick to the basics .But you cannot get the basics at our Dollarama - basics being eggs milk bread butter coffee cocoa meat veg and fruit . So why don't you try it again with real food and not junk food. We just cannot afford prepackaged junk stuff anymore for the prices and our health !

Hey Dianne. Here is another comparison you might find interesting. No food. This one focused on household items and cleaning supplies. ua-cam.com/video/NqfTUfmPyRY/v-deo.htmlsi=Du0jWTx69zOAXBx_
@ValC-vn5vl That's very interesting to me. I always suspected everything was more expensive in NS. Sorry to hear the groceries are more. Food prices are just crazy.
Why is Walmart charging you $6 for 3 white cake mixes when the regular price is only $1.97? If you want to save money, be sure to also check prices to be sure the math is correct
I guess they just had a price change. It used to be 3/$5 or $1.97 each. That increased to 3/$6 so I figure very shortly that single item price will increase as well.
Always check the prices at Walmart. They try to scam you in many ways. Quite often the 3 for whatever price does not ring up and you have to go to customer service to get it rectified after checking your bill. You will also find they will put a case of something similar on the shelf with the sale items so you think you are getting 3 of the same type, but you are paying full price for all 3 items. And also, many times the sale price listed on the shelf is not the price that is charged at checkout. Really watch your prices and check your receipts at Walmart because they will scam you on a number of items each time you shop there.
@@adventuresingroceryland Well, it's my preference to have cashiers not laid off and replaced with self-checkouts. So when you come across an item they are trying to scam you on, do you call over one of the six loss prevention people who are watching for shoplifting at the self-checkouts and have them correct it? You know, the ones who could be running registers instead and have no need for self-checkouts. And the money spent on self-checkout machines could be better spent upgrading the antiquated Point of Sale equipment used by Walmart at the cashier lanes so you can properly monitor your purchases as they are scanned in. We must also realize that whatever Walmart or other retailers say, even IF self-checkouts saved money, the savings would not be passed on to you, it would go straight to dividends for shareholders.
@@adventuresingroceryland the no name at the grocery store are still better for your money I eat a lot of tuna dollar store cans you can just get two sandwiches no name can get 3 and half good sandwiches or 4 thin ones
@jongibbons730 Ha. I guess they used to be 3/$5 or $1.97each. They just had a price increase to 3/$6 so I imagine the single price will increase very shortly.
The multi-buys from superstore infuriate me as a single person. I don’t have the space or need for multiple products and shouldn’t have to pay more for a single item!
@@RomanCastevet666 I agree!
@@RomanCastevet666 Same as multi-buys from Walmart. I also find them so disappointing.
I feel the exact same way. I try to use Superstore as little as I can. I wish someone would open a No Frills in my area.
@@deewhite0612 OH my gosh! Me too!

@adventuresingroceryland I agree mel. Great to see comparisons
@diannefitzmaurice9813
Having a friend with some unused land is the best thing ever....My friend agreeded to expand his small garden in his back yard......there arena handfull of us working together....we now have rabbits, an ever expanding garden (5' x 16' raised beds) and 10 3'x30' in ground beds.....yes it is a huge amount of work but the yeilds will only get larger over the next 5 years....we grew more than we can handle.

@@VeginMatt That is very, very clever!

Fruit Roll Ups - same product/same size
Harvest Crunch - same product/same size

White rice - different brands but the same size
Wraps - different brands but the same size
Hot Chocolate - same product, Walmart didn't have any fancy flavours, so the picture of the non fancy option had 3 more packets (but that would be the same if non fancy options were chosen at the other stores)
Baking Soda - Sobeys/Superstore/Dollarama same product and size (500g) but Walmart was store brand and slightly smaller (454g)
Tuna - different brands, Superstore/Sobeys/Walmart same size 170g and Dollarama 130g

@@adventuresingrocerylandthank you for the detailed explanation. I am always shocked when people just look at the price of items and don’t look at the quantity involved
@christinewarnaar-bates3494 For the purposes of this experiment, I purposely tried to find the exact same items. That just made everything easier!
as a single person who lives alone i find it extremely hard to find good deals. the "deals" i see are for families with kids, and i get that, but i hate wasting food.
Do you really find potatoes go bad in a week? I find potatoes last for so long. Especially if stored in a cool dark place.
I find that I do well for produce at my local market in Chinatown or Koreatown.

Yes. I talk about this ALL THE TIME! It is the perception that they are old or stale that has lingered for 10 years!

Yes. They all are getting super expensive.

@@AcidFlash123 I tend to use self check out so I can monitor the prices that scan during the checkout process. It's my preference.
